Attachments in Mail show as a Plugin Icon

We have just installed 10.5.6 on our Intel iMac at work and when we receive or attach anything to a message (pdf's or images) it shows up as a blue plugin icon, When the message is sent the person who receives the message can see the the attachment ok.
Anyone any ideas on why this is happening and what we can do to correct it?
Regards
Adrian

The problem has been sorted the plugins within the Mail app where in a folder called Plugins Disabled we moved them back to the plugins folder and everything worked fine.

When I open the Mail program and the email has an attachment the attachment shows up as squares with question marks.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

  • Attachments no longer show as icons in emails

    10.6.4 iMac, MacMail
When I selected an attachment it used to always appear as an icon at wherever my cursor was in the email. Now it suddenly appears at the end of the message (which is nice) but is displayed all over the email so I have to right-click and select "display as an icon" every time. At first the first attachment would be an icon but if there was a second it was displayed there - now ANY attachment shows up all over the email. How to stop it?

Okay, well, as I said, for me, anything that can be rendered in one page, is, and if it is multi-page, isn't. Multiple single-pages all render. Toss in one or more multi-page, in any order, into the mix, and all the singles render in-line, in the order that they occurred in the group of attachments, and all the multi-pages show up as file icons, in the order that they occurred in the group of attachments. At least that's how it is on multiple machines to which I have access.
Bad news for you, I bet Apple regards this as a "feature," not a bug. Because they already know what you want and need.
Perhaps some smart person could weigh in here and advise as to whether there is some obscure setting that could be changed by modifying com.apple.mail.plist or by using some hidden features revealer program like an Onyx.
My only suggested work-around would be to zip it (them) before you attach (one or more files highlighted/selected > right-click > compress).
And if you are talking about sending, there is no guarantee as to how the receiver's email program will treat the attachments, anyways. Even though rendered in-line on your end (or not), the receiver may only get a pile of file icons (or may render in-line) (of course, MacMail users will render in-line just like you).

  • Dashboard widgets showing missing plugin icons

A couple of my Dashboard widgets - notably Flight Tracker and Unit Converter - appear with the missing plugin icons and do not work. How do I fix this?

Don, this can happen if you accidently overwrote these widgets (which should have been pre-installed with your machine) with PowerPC versions from an older Mac. Did you use migration assistant to transfer your files over to your new machine (and if so, could you have accidently copied over these widgets)?
Unfortunately, the only solution is to 1) reinstall OS X or 2) use Pacifist to extract the widgets from your OS X install disks.

  • Attachments in Mail

Attachments in Mail.   Why do picture files go into message as open files and text messages as icons?

Sorry this does not seem to work.  I use OS 10.8.2  on an iMac.  Right click on desktop's small icon does not show VIEW AS ICON.  View Menu at top of page shows view as icon but greyed out. After loading full image into page, size can be reduced by selecting SMALL in top RH box, but this moves any text to bottom of page.
One suggestion in Apple Support says Ctrl 1 should do the same as your right click but this did not work either.
I have no trouble with icons for text files as attachments.  These behave as expected.

  • Pdf files as attachments in Mail

Sometimes pdf attachments in mail are saved as a pdf file with icon other times the document is visible and fills the whole page - How can I ensure only the pdf file is attaced and not the open document - seems to be there is no reason as to why this is ?
Using Blackbook + Leopard latest updates

Don't understand the reply above; I assume it's for another thread.
Not to worry: Mail will show you the pdf if it can but when you send it the file will be attached. If the other person's mail reader can view attachments inline then it will and there's nothing you do about that.

  • PowerPoint Attachments in Mail do not Open

I have a new Intel Dual Core iMac. I receive a lot of attachments in mail, all of which I have no problems opening except for one: PowerPoint. When I click on a PowerPoint attachment, Mail tells me that it doesn't know which application should open it. When I drag the attachment from Mail to the PowerPoint 2004 icon on the dock, it opens just fine. I do not have this problem on my PowerBook. The get info on the PowerPoint attachment does indicate that PowerPoint 2004 is the default app.
    Any Ideas?

The only thing that I could think of would be to change the open with to something else. Then change it back and set to open all as default. I had this happen before and that fixed it for me.

  • Remove attachments in Mail

"Remove attachments" in Mail (Lion) is disabled and I cant remove the files from the emails I have sent. it worked fine before I switched to Lion and kept my Mail folder in Libary small. Anybody else having this problem?

Just tried it out a little bit more: The problem is related only to mails sent from Mail.app 5.0 in Lion. Mails sent through the mobile me web interface for example behave normally after being synced back to Mail.app. Attachments can be removed from those mails within Mail.app.
Another thing I noticed: The mails that do have the problem do not show the paper-clip symbol in the list of mails on the left side. The paper-clip should appear next to the addressee's name. The mail preview on the right, however, correctly shows that the mail has an attachment and it can be opnened by clicking. I also created a smart mailbox to show only mails that do have an attachment and are in the sent folder: Only the mails sent before installing lion are listed (attachements can be removed) – all lately sent mails are nout found: Obviously something makes Mail.app "forget" that there is an attachment when sending mails in Lion, thus graying out the command to remove the attachment from the specific mail.
Regarding file types of the unremovable attachments there doesn't seem to be a pattern. I have the problem with both word documents and PDF files. The number of attachments neither seems to make a difference.
Temporary solution: Do not send mails with attachments you want to potentially remove later on from within Mail.app in Lion at the moment. Instead, use an iOS device or your mail provider's web interface for sending those mails. Apple, please fix it!

  • Remove attachments in Mail fails

Since I first installed Yosemite, I am no longer able to remove attachments in Mail. I use a POP account to download my email from a Microsoft Exchange Server and store the mail with attachment(s) on my iMac. The email plus attachments(s) are now physically in a folder - not the Inbox - on the hard disk of my iMac. They are no longer on the server. I drag (or save) the attachment (no problem) to the desktop or an OS X folder. But now when I try "Remove Attachments" within Mail to discard the attachment, leaving only the email text, the menu choice Messages->Remove Attachments is grey not black and thus unavailable. What is going on? Why does this no longer work? I also have tried dragging the file to one of my iCloud email folder - not the Inbox - but that does not work either. This used to work under Mavericks but no longer. But it should be there because the menu choice still exists. I get this behavior on my iMac at work and also on my iMac at home. Both iMacs are running OS X 10.10.1.
Many thanks to anyone who can help solve this problem.

  • Misbehaving Attachments in Mail

When I attach a document in Mail (usually a PDF) it sometimes shows up as a icon with a PDF symbol and other times it actually opens up the document in the mail message (this also happens with JPEGs).
This drives me crazy because I apparently have no control as to how it is going to act. Sometimes when I am attaching several documents some will show as Icons and others will open themselves in the message with no rhyme or reason. I have tried several methods of attaching; drag and drop, via the attachment option at the top of the message, dragging and dropping several at once (some open up and some do not).
In the end I do not want ANYTHING I attach to show up as anything but an Icon, no open pictures, no open documents. This is not a new problem it has been happening over all editions of OSX, Panther, Tiger, Leopard.
What am I doing wrong, or must I abandon Mail and get something like Eudora?

In general, Mail will display a PDF as a preview if it is one page, or as an icon if it is more than one page. This has absolutely no effect on how the attachment is sent, or on how it is displayed in the recipient's email program. The attachment is not really "opened" in the sense that it would be if you double-clicked on the icon in the Finder. It is simply displayed as a preview. It acts like a giant icon. If you want to see a normal icon, Control-Click/Right-Click on the preview and select "View as Icon". Again, this has no effect on what the recipient sees. That is under the control of his software, and there is nothing you can do about it.

Are the PDF files showing with the PDF icon or other icons in your local disk?
Please start Outlook in sate mode and test again. To do this, press Windows key + R to open the Run command, type

Mail shows in the doc, but when clicked or doubled clicked does not open on the desktop, HELP !

    Try restarting your Mac.
Open Termimal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal)Try entering this command: killall Dock, and then hit enter
Try dragging the Mail icon out of the dock, then let it disappear in a puff of smoke. Then from Applications/Mail try dragging the Mail icon back into the dock, and see if it works.
Does Mail open otherwise? Like if you try opening it from your Applications folder?if it doesn't:
Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
if that doesn't work: reinstall Mavericks over your current installation.
