Attachments will not open in Treo

Using Adobe standard 8.1 and MS Office 07. When I open a PDF file and send it to someone on their treo phone using the email button, it will not open. They get a message "Cannot view attachment". Here's the rub. If I open outlook and manually attach the file and send it, there's no problem. This takes a longer amount of time and I'm sending dozens of emails out a day, so it's definately more than just a small inconvenience. The second part of this is that another workstation that has the exact same setup (purchased and sat up the same time as this one was) is not having the problem. We've compared settings page by page for both Acrobat and MS Outlook and both are identicle. I'm pulling my hair out on this one... Can anyone offer a suggestion?

This is a property of the e-mail client and I have avoided Outlook like a plague for years (particularly every since Bill Gates was saying something about security and Outlook was one of the major culprits). There should be an option that says to encode ALL attachments as MIME or such. If you leave it up to Outlook, it may interpret the PDF as ASCII because the first few characters are ASCII. I faintly remember this was a problem with Outlook a few years back. It might also be something that would be corrected with an update to Outlook if it was indeed a "bug" in Outlook. Since I am not an Outlook user, I am only suggesting that it may be the likely problem.
Sorry I can't help more on a fix.

Running Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron. Email attachments will not open on any emails, they will open in IE. In the past it would only happen on once in a while but then it would just be a gray box where a pic would be. Now no attachments will open.

Check the image exceptions: Tools > Options > Content: Load Images: Exceptions - See [[Options window - Content panel]]
A way to see which images are blocked is to click the favicon (''Site Identification'' icon) on the left side of the location bar and click the "More Information" button.
This will open the Security tab of the ''Page Info'' window (also accessible via Tools > Page Info).
Go to the ''Media'' tab of that Page Info window.
Select the first image and scroll down though the list with the Down arrow.
If an image is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box ''Block Images from...'' then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

  • Attachments will not open with Adobe Reader

Just yesterday, email attachments sent in PDF form will no longer open.  The window will open, display no content then immediately closes.  Ive tried every tutorial available through the Adobe website.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

    What is your operating system?
    What is your Reader version?
    What is your email client?
Does this also happen when you open an existing local PDF?

  • Word attachments will not open

Whenever I receive Mail attachments that are Word Docs, I get the same error when I try to open them:
"Sorry, this document cannot be viewed."
The document may be password protected or an error occured while reading it.
Happens no matter who the attachment comes from (even tried sending to myself using .mac email, and tried opening the attachment in the inbox AND in the sent messages folder.
I get a LOT of these each day and really need to get this solved.
    Thanks!

Not sure. I open Word docs all the time and don't think I have had one that hasn't opened yet no matter what machine it was written on or mailed from. It's possible that the attachment reader is using iPhone's Safari to view the document. Have you tried:
    • Home>Settings>Safari>Clear Cache
    • Hold the Home and Wake/Sleep button for 10 seconds to reset the phone
You tried this with .mac, is that the mail service you normally receive from? And I assume that the file opens fine in .Mac mail in desktop Safari?

  • When forwarding email with Firefox (default browser)the pictures in the email (not attachments) will not open , only shows boxes with a red x on top at the receiver, but when sending with IE, the pictures open, this happens only recently since a week ago.

I forward a message with pictures in it with Firefox, the receiver can not see any pictures, only boxes with a red x, but can read the message.
But when I forward the same message with pictures with IE,
the receiver can see the pictures and read the message too.

When going to a website the picture was small - tried changing the Zoom size , tried Zoom Reset - the text did change size but the layout distorts - found under View - Zoom - Zoom Text Only was checked --- Removed this check mark and the website returned to normal size and Zoom worked normally again. I am 99.9999% sure I did NOT check this myself and there is no one else on the computer to cause it. Maybe this will help.

Install the free Adobe Reader and you'll be able to open with it.

  • TS1506 I have a problem opening some email attachments. They will not open in the mail application on an IPad Air

I recently upgraded from an iPad 1 to an Air. One of its main uses is to avoid printing volumes of papers for meetings, so the abilty to open attachments with mail is pretty important.
There are some attachments that will not open in the mail application on an iPad Air. Some in the same format do (docx). They do open in Mail on my MacBook, and iPad1, or if I go to webmail on any device including a Blackberry, so it is not a file corruption problem.  The problem persists on different networks. Other emails from the same sender do work. It seems to be specifically related to IOS 7 or the Mail app. Quickview won't work, nor will opening with a range of Apps which report a file error.
There was an historical problem with Apple garbling pdf files, but this is a new one on me.
All this is a shame because it is opening emails in attachments that was one of my main reasons for buying an Air.
Does anyone know of the cause? A solution?

    What about a work-around?
Ios 7.1 etc. has a problem with communicating with exchange.  There are lots of reports of problems with pdf files.

As per suggestions I have added the .Doc extension to JPEG s and atached to the bottom of the message.
Does any one have any further ideas I can try?
    Thanks.
    Sandy

Do not change the extension to .doc - and stop listening to advice from whatever source you got that idea from.  Changing the extension to .doc will make the recieving machine think the file is a Microsoft Word document...  and it isn't, so Word won't be able to open it.  The extension needs to be .jpeg or .jpg if the file is a JPEG.
As to opening attachments, make sure you have Edit -> Attachments -> Always Send Windows-Friendly Attachments checked.  You may still have problems with recipients who are using Outlook, though.  Outlook is broken when it comes to understanding HTML e-mail messages, and Mail likes to send HTML messages.  (In fact, recent changes to Mail will make your message HTML, regardless of whether you have specified it to be plain text, in certain situations.)
If you find that you are unable to send to people using Outlook, and you aren't willing to ask them to switch to a non-broken mail client just for you, then you could try something like setting up a Picasa or Dropbox account and uploading your photos there.

My TextEdit will not open email attachments ending docx. How can I remedy this?

No, TextEdit cannot read those. You will need to convert them to .doc files first:
Mac users using Word 2004 who receive a Word 2008 for Mac, (or Word 2007 for Windows) document, will not be able to read this without having the Open XML Converter installed, which can be downloaded from Microsoft.
    Go to this page:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx
and click on the right under Most Popular, 'Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.0.2'
This opens a window at the bottom of the page. Scroll that to the bottom and click on English.dmg, and it will download for you as a disk image, which can be installed in the usual way.
After installation you can open and read .xml formatted Word 2008 documents in Word 2004.
Update: This link  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976831  takes you to a newer version 1.1.3 (released Nov 10, 2009).

Suddenly my imac will not open e-mail attachments.  It scans for viruses.  When I hit "continue", nothing happens.

The problem most likely is the antivirus application. My recommendation would be following the developers instructions, uninstall the application. Most antivirus applications tend to create more problems than they solve. The best thing you can do for your system is to run Software Update frequently and let Apple's security handle any issues. I'd also strongly recommend you carefully read Thomas Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
