Attempt to burn failed - 4450 error

I see at least two other people have encountered this error. I put a new CD in and attempt to burn some purchased songs to it. The process starts, looks like it's working on the first song, and then I get a message that iTunes is cancelling the burn and the error:
"The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred. 4450."
When I check the CD, all the tracks are list as 1KB .cda files which is, of course, enough to make the CD useless.
I found a KB article at one point that suggested updating my CD drivers. I checked but there were no newer ones that what I have installed already. Has anyone solved this problem in any other way? My CD drive is listed as LG CD-RW 8080B when I look in device manager. I also just updated to the latest version of iTunes.
Compaq Presario - Pentium III   Windows XP Pro

I'm having exactly the same problem. Get the message after it burns the 1st song. I've run the latest Itunes updates, tried to reinstall it, same problem. Gone through 10 blanks now, very frustrated, never had the trouble before. I've tried Maxell & TDK discs. Moved burn speed way down, still no deal. No updates are available for my driver either. Here is my diagnostic. I keep seeing others with this problem, but no real solutions yet, argh.

  • Burn failed/ unknown error/ (1771)?

I just attempted to make a copy of the contents in my smart playlist, so as to have a copy of all my music in case during upgrading to iTunes 6 anything happens. Im using DVD's to make Data discs and the first one burnt fine and then it told me to put in another DVD which I did, but then I got this 1771 error. I have tryed numerous times since to burn the songs that didnt make it onto the first disc, but keep getting the same error. I have tryed 3 brands of DVD's but I dont think that is the problem, as I have used the same brand for at least a year now. Please help!

I am having problems creating a data DVD. At first I thought it was the type of DVD's I was using (DVD+R's); so I went out this weekend and purchased DVD-R's. The type of DVD's must not have been the problems since I kept getting the same error message (The attempt to burn failed. Error 1771). I know my DVD burner works because I created a movie in another program and burned it to a DVD. I'm convinced the problem lies with itunes but don't know how to fix it. I have itunes version 6.01 installed on my computer. I read the discussion string below find myself a bit confused. Can anyone please help?

  • Burn failed (unknow error 261)

I tried to make a copy of a playlist on cd-rw. I got this message 'burn failed. unknown error 261'. Can anyone help me fix this problem?

Does the name of the playlist have any punctation in it? & or ? or @ signs? Try removing them and trying the CD burn again.

  • CD Burn Fail. Error 4280

The attempt to burn a disk failed. An unknown error occured. 4280
How do I fix this? What does it mean? Diagnostics is able to read and report the drive and error. (Mashita UJ840D)

Maybe I did figure it out afterall - I tried removing a couple tracks from my playlist - ones I had burned to disc earlier - and the burn went through without a hitch.
Apparently now you can burn an iTune only once - unless you pay the extra 30 cents or so per song - for unlimited burn rights.

  • Attempt to burn cd = unknown error 4450

Using fairly new laptop and have been previously able to burn cds from iTunes, but now it cancels writing of first song and tells me "unknown error 4450".
Is this an iTunes error, or my computer? I did the diagnostic test and it showed no problems, and I can import songs from written cds. What can I do?
    Thanks in advance for help/suggestions.

  • Burning Fail, Unknown Error 4550

    Hi,
I've wasted about 4 CDs today trying to back up my iTunes purchases I have never had this problem burning before, I have tried memorex discs and Philips CD/R. The disc begins to burn, saves the track information (title, length etc) then I get a message saying the burn has failed and it will take a few minutes to stop the process.
    Any idea what's going on?

+I have tried memorex discs and Philips CD/R.+
After wasting a bunch of brand-name discs like you did years ago, I decided to quit iTunes for burning any backups. Esepcially after I tried to test my backup strategy, and none of the iTunes discs would restore properly.
Thank goodness I backed up my important files like normal. Through Windows Exploder.

  • "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly"

    Hello everyone,
I have suddenly developed a problem when trying to burn a CD. I get the "Checking playlist" and "Initializing" messages, and then Writing...(the name of the first track)", but about 20 seconds later, just when seems as if it will start burning, the CD is ejected and I get the following message: ""The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry."
I have browsed the forums here and it seems that many other people have had similar problems. I am running a Powerbook G4, OS X version 10.2.8, iTunes 6.0.5.
I have used several different brands of media, and many slower burning speeds, but nothing helps.
I can still listen to CD's with my computer, just not burn anything.
My computer is about 5 years old. Do you think that this problem is suddenly occurring simply because my optical drive needs to be replaced?
Also, another issue, possibly related, but maybe not, is that, after my burn failed for the first time, I put in a completely different CD to see if it would play. It did, but instead of listing the correct tracks on the CD, it showed the tracks of the previous playlist that had the failed burn.
For example, I imported the tracks from one CD into my Library, then moved them to a playlist. When I tried to burn the contents of that playlist to a CD, I received the "attempt to burn failed" message that I previously described.
Then, I inserted a completely different disc, but iTunes read it as having the same contents of the playlist that had failed to burn, but when I clicked on the track titles, they played from the new CD that I'd inserted, not the failed playlist. So although the titles indicated that I was working with the failed playlist, the media that played was from the new CD.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Sarah

I'm having a similar problem. In my case, the problem started about two months ago. I regularly update software. Currently I'm at 10.4.10 and iTunes 7.3.2(6).
In my case, I'm trying to backup recent iTunes purchases. I'm unable to burn CDs with the original combo drive (CD) or my internal NEC burner (DVDs). I get a series of coasters. Occasionally .Mac Backup fails as well. Toast 7 works fine. Even stranger, I can burn 1 DVD successfully with an external Pioneer DVD burner (4x) USB 2 using iTunes. (I have a belkin USB 2 card) Multiple DVDs fail. I recently switched to this PowerMac from an iBook and several preference files were copied with my home directory during the transition. The external drive was used with the iBook, but not on this system before which may lend to the preferences file as a possibility.
However, I find it odd that my external drive works and both internal drives are failing. I was suspecting the IDE controller on the logic board, except that Toast works. This logic board is not as old as the computer. It was a replacement in 2005 when an after market ATI card fried and took it and the power supply out. At first I suspected a hardware problem and replaced the IDE cable which looked warn. The NEC drive is about two years old and the combo drive is the original. They are on the same controller.
In my case it is certainly possible the drives or controller are starting to fail. I wonder if anyone else might have an external cd/dvd drive they could test that are having the problem.

  • Optical Drive Burn Fails Error 4200

I have a new optical DVD writer (also burns cds, etc.) and if I use Nero software to burn .mp3 files or .acc files no problem. But when I try to burn a cd from within iTunes (mp4) it says burn failed - unknown error 4200.
I have removed and reinstalled iTunes, have updated the firmware on the new drive, have tried burning at a slower rate. I have spoken with both iTunes and the manufacturer with no resolution. It is a Samsung SATA optical drive.
    Anyone got ideas?
    Thanks

    Thank you for your help!
At one point in the last few days i did run out of disk space on one drive, but i think i had 5Gig free on the short drive when i was trying it earlier, and i have upped that to 30.
My spindled HP DV-16Xs worked on the drive i had before pretty darn well.. I've tried a bunch of unlabeled ones, i've also tried burning at 1x, and i went out and bought some jewel cased verbatim dvd-r 16Xs, same problem.
I will take one more shot at finding the best media using that website, get some 8Xs if i can find them, before hauling it into apple.
without the dvd burner it's hard to backup very well, I was planning to get a external hard drive next month.

    try this...
This is how I managed to fix the problem...and I hope this helps others in the similar situation.
I tried with another program..latest version of Nero, and this was also stopping at the 'initialising' stage. I was now lost! I thought the last resort is to give Evesham (My PC manufacturer) a buzz. They were very helpfull. Basically go into 'Control Panel', 'System', and click on the Hardware tab, then 'Device Manager'. Uninstall everything in the DVD/CDRom Drives. Then uninstall everything under the catagory IDE ATA/Atapi disk controllers. This is where my problem was, as I only had one IDE channel here. You should have 4 or 5! Reboot your machine, and everything will automatically re-load. I tried burning using Nero and it worked. Then the big test was iTunes. It worked 1st time!
I asked why the IDE channels have dissappearred, and he said sometimes uninstalling Programmes occasionally removes them.
I hope this will help others who are having problems to burn stuff on iTunes.

  • The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4450)

Since I upgraded to iTunes 7.5, I can no longer burn CDs using this or any other burn app. It progresses 25-40% and then returns a 4450 error. I have tried slowing the burn rate down and the error still comes into play after a couple of songs. The diagnotics from Apple and Dell state the drive is working fine.

I get the same message but the number is 4000. Ever since I upgraded to iTunes 7.5 I have been unable to burn CDs. Do you have a solution yet?

  • The attempt to burn a disk failed. An unknown error occurred (4000).

Whenever I try to burn a CD from iTunes, the burning process starts and continues for about two minutes, cancels automatically and then displays the following statement: "The attempt to burn a disk failed. An unknown error occurred (4000)."
Several Apple technicians have tried but been unable to assist me. They have pointed me to articles at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93360 and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93286 but none of the suggested solutions solve the problem.
    1. I have the most recent version of iTunes (6.0.1).
    2. All of the songs that I am trying to burn are authorized. For example, they include the Complete U2 Collection, which I recently downloaded from the iTunes Music Store.
    3. I am not trying to burn a CD with the same Playlist more than seven times.
    4. My CD burner works perfectly fine using other CD burning software, such as Windows Media Player or Roxio Easy Media Creator. However, these programs are not compatible with any of the many pieces of music that I have purchased and downloaded from the iTunes Music Store.
My hardware configuration is as follows:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
    HP Pavilion 061 PJ467AA-ABA M1180N
    iTunes 6.0.1.3

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can restore my ability to burn CDs from iTunes? Thank you very much!

I am having the same problem. I get an error 4450 - unknown. I have purchased several songs but it appears I will not be able to burn them to CD.
