Attempt to install UpdateConnection on new Ultra 20 fails

I have a new Ultra 20 and when I try to install the update manager, I get a failure (see transcript below). I'm stuck.
Also, with this Sun Ultra 20 I purhcased a three-year support contract. However, nobody at Sun can find my support contract number and I can't sign up for SunSolve without one. How does one get past this barrier?

You may be able to determine the process that is running by grepping the output of ps for "updatemanager" and kill it with kill or some similar means. Obviously "xkill" or it's ilk will also kill it, but none of this would meet my standard for "graceful".
As for determining what is the problem... one thing to try is starting Update Manager from the command line with /usr/bin/updatemanager -debug and capturing that output.
Similarly running smpatch analyze from the command line may reveal some useful infromation, as Update Manager uses smpatch under the hood.
Finally you can get some useful registration information from ccr
/usr/lib/cc-ccr/bin/ccr
Using the option to get the cns.assetid parameter will indicate if the registration process stored an assetid for your system, and may help check for backend errors as well...

  • Installing Aperture on new iMac fails.

New iMac of late 2012 bought yesterday.Have an iMac of late 2007.
After transferring programs and documents I started Aperture and was requested to give serialnumber anew. The serial number for Aperture 2.0 was invalid and so was the number of Aperture 3, as an upgrade number. What's wrong?

So you have the original serial number for Aperture 2 and the upgrade serial number for Aperture 3?
Pro apps like Aperture are really meant to be installed on a new machine via the media it came on, they don;t do well being copied over.
If you  are positive the serial numbers you have are valid and are being entered correctly and you can't get a hold of a DVD reader to install off your media you can try downloading from here Aperture 3.1 Trial

  • Why does every attempt at installing CC Desktop App (update) fail?

I have been with Adobe Creative Cloud for a few months but lately when CC says an update for the desktop app is ready for download it will nearly finish installing but always end in this dialog:  "We've encountered the following issues:  Creative Cloud desktop failed to install" or this one, "Administrator privileges are required to continue with the installation."

If you remove the cloud desktop app altogether do updates show in the individual programmes as that seems to use adobe update manager?
If adobe are going to insist on an internet connection then they have to get their back end system to be reliable. They can't claim it is our internet connections that are the issue when it is *only* their software that is problematic to upgrade. Everyone else's loads fine and updates fine. No fuss, no drama. Properly written installations allow admin authentication from a user account and work via firewalls. Even with the firewall off CC won't update the desktop version so I have uninstalled it completely and won't be reinstalling it until a proper version is released that works reliably.

  • "Installer failed to initialize" when attempting to install Lookout 5.0 in Windows 7 Windows XP Mode

I have a new, clean, Windows 7 Professional tower (has newest Windows updates). When attempting to install Lookout 5.0 in the Windows XP Mode I get an error window indicating "the installer has failed to initialize". The only option is to click OK and the installation stops.
    Any ideas what I'm missing?

Is anyone running Lookout 5.0 with a Windows 7 machine in Windows XP Mode? Any installation problems? Any running problems?

  • Failed attempts to install 10.5.8 - a fix?

Just tonight, I downloaded and attempted to install the new system update, 10.5.8. However, when install was about half way done with the progress bar, the install just stopped. It froze for nearly half an hour.
Fearing a crash was imminent, I force-quit and restarted the system. But when I finally got my start screen, I saw a series of lines in computer gibberish, and the screen grayed . Then, I get this message:
"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button.
But when I restart, I get the same screen. When I try to restart from my install disk (which always seemed to work), I can't seem to get past the opening, grayed out screen.
How can I recover from a failed install and bring my iMac to what it was like before this snafu? Thanks!

You will have to reinstall OS X. You most likely installed the update on an already dysfunctional system. You may be able to do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Attempting retail install CS6, but failed installation occurs every attempt on Win7x64

First off, appologies for this post, I'm a bit flustered.
New Win7x64 computer and an attempt to install retail CS6 have failed. I now get the following error message upon each install attempt:  "Installer failed to initialize.  File not found.  Please download Adobe Support Advisor to detect the problem".  I did, and with some internet issues I finally sent in a report.  I tried the Cleaner tool several times, no help.  I attempted to remove a registry entry as described in a "bootstrapper error" fix, but that particular "InProgress Key" does not exist.
I even attempted to download and install a trial of CS6, but upon attempting to install I yet again recieved the same error message.
    What is my next move?
As with anyone else with an issue, I just want to intstall CS6 and be on my way.  I also own retail LR3 and Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 (plug-in), but I will not attempt to install those UNTILL I can resolve the CS6 install issue.  I need all 3 of these programs, now.
Once again, thank you for any assistance that can be provided.
    Jason

I solved my issue with a work around that I can live with, but I still have questions about why my CS6 disk would not install originally.
Okay, I decided to create a new Admin User account and shut down AV.  In the new Amin user account I loaded the CS6 disk, I was returned with a":you must restart" error.  I did.  Re-loaded CS6, I got the installer, I got the ueula, I got the product key page, I finally got into the authorized product screen, then when trying to log in my log in stalled for 15 minutes.  Just a gray screen with no other options but to shut the install down with Task Manager.  I did, and waited for the program to end on it's own, and NOT selecting the End Now option.  I started the process again, got the the sign in and I stalled again.  The third time finally got me conected, and I was then able to instal CS6x64 on my New Admin User account.
Once finished, I checked the program, good.  I then shut down and restarted, but logged onto my original Admin user account.  CS6x64 is there and fully functional, and plug in Silver Efex Pro 2 was added no problem.
So I am pleased I got the install working and I can fully use the program as intended, I still have questions about the issues that would not allow me to install normally.
Thank you all for looking, and thank you Curt for your responces.  I think I will still call Adobe and run this by them.
Install Error Not resolved, but worked around.

Attempt to install Mountain Lion has highlighted need for internal disk repair. Even after "repair" ML still says disk is damaged. Attempt to restore from Time Machine back-up failed - cannot 'see' internal HD to restore to. Help! Has attempt to install ML caused these problems or just highlighted existing need to Repair Disk? Even so, why can back-up from Time Machine not see the internal drive to restore to?

Csound1, William & Sig .... thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I fear you are right - I'll need a new disk. I'm booked in at the Apple Genius Bar in Bordeaux, France on Wed ... quite a challenge as my French isn't great! The current internal disk is 500gb, does anyone know whether I can upgrade my 21.5" iMac (circa Oct-2009 vintage) to a larger size internal disk, 1Tb or even 2Tb? I already have one external 2Tb drive and another one on order (I have masses of media stored and more planned as I've just taken up photography). Seems a bit of a pain managing with only 500gb internal storage. OR, can you advise me on how I can store all my photos on my new 2Tb external drive - I can't seem to figure out how to set the path for iPhoto to see them (I can't even figure out where they are stored right now!). Same with iTunes, how do I set the default storage to the external drive (I moved everything manually and then imported them all from the new drive - it worked but seemed very convoluted). Any advice on how to manage multiple drives gratefully received. And thanks again for previous replies.

My old PC died but the hard drive is still functional and accessible using a USB extraction device. I purchased a new PC and downloaded the latest iTunes but attempts to transfer the iTunes folder with songs from the old hard drive to my new computer failed. Only 20 of approx 300 songs transferred. All other non music file transfers (WORD, EXCEL, etc) from the old hard drive to the new computer were successful. Is this a file type issue? Any thoughts??  THANKS!

Can you describe what “the operation is failing” means?  What is happening and how is it different than what you expect?
Also, what product are you trying to update manually, and do you have a link to the page of instructions, so we know what your attempting to do?

When Creative Cloud updated a few days ago (Win7) it reported I had no installed apps.
In Lightroom I keep getting messages that a new version is available. Installed it from CC and it installed without error, CC shows I installed it, but it simply fails to run.
How do I get CC to find apps installed under the previous version?
And how do I get Lightroom CC to run?
    Peter

I still don't know how to get CC to find that I have Photoshop CC installed, but running Creative Cloud, going to Preferences and signing out, then signing in again got Lightroom CC to work.
Since Photoshop CC is still working despite apparently not being installed things are now OK, at least for the moment. But I'm not feeling at all happy with Adobe.
