Attempt to restore HD fails

My OS X 10.4 Server (800 MHz G4, 1GB RAM) recently experienced HD problems that necessitated replacing the drive. I used Disk Utility to restore the drive to an external firewire drive, and successfully rebooted from the firewire drive - it's not fast, but it does work.
After replacing the failing drive, I restored from the external drive to the new internal drive, selected the new drive in the Startup Disk panel in System Preferences, and rebooted. Everything worked as expected until I attempted to login; the spinner comes up after clicking the login button and never stops. I've let it run over two hours, and it's still spinning. I get the same behavior for all accounts, including the Admin and root accounts. Luckily, rebooting to the external drive works just fine (using the option-key at startup boot disk selection).
Any suggestions on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.
Also, please let me know if this request more properly belongs in another forum.
Thanks in advance.

  • IPod Restore Immediately Fails - Disk I/O Problem

    Hello all,
My Mini started displaying the folder/! icon Saturday and I've been trying to fix it ever since. Additional symptoms:
    - When I connect to my Mac, I immediately get an "unrecognized disk" alert from the Finder
    - "disk2: I/O error" appears in system.log as soon as I connect
    - Attempts to "Restore" immediately fail and the following is written to system.log:
Jul 4 15:04:23 myMac UpdaterTool[1838]: Updater Tool starting
    Jul 4 15:04:24 myMac UpdaterTool[1838]: opening O_RDWR

    Jul 4 15:04:24 myMac UpdaterTool[1838]: error 5 reading 10 bytes from device /dev/rdisk2 at 20480
    - Disk Utility reports that the Mini has 2 TB of capacity!
    - I've gone into the diagnostics menu on the Mini and DISK R/W fails, but DISK SCAN returns with a PASS immediately.
So - I'm guessing this is a disk problem. Can anybody provide me with a remedy that's cheaper than buying a new Nano? Thanks very much for your time.

    Hi DJDe
Can you feel a 'clicking' while holding the iPod in your hand? If so, you're definitely experiencing drive issues. If it still under warranty, you may be able to get a replacement if you visit your local genius bar.
As for a less expensive alternative to buying a new Nano, you can always 'recycle' your mini and get a 10% discount towards that purchase:

I'm still attempting to restore it, but the process goes as follows
    - Extracting software.
    - Waiting for iphone.
    - Preparing iphone software for restore.
    - Verifying iphone software.
    - Restoring iPhone software.
It is at this point where it begins to load approxiamtely 10% and then freezes. I have had the handset connected 7 hours with no progress and this is my third attempt since Friday. Please help.

Attempt to install Mountain Lion has highlighted need for internal disk repair. Even after "repair" ML still says disk is damaged. Attempt to restore from Time Machine back-up failed - cannot 'see' internal HD to restore to. Help! Has attempt to install ML caused these problems or just highlighted existing need to Repair Disk? Even so, why can back-up from Time Machine not see the internal drive to restore to?

Csound1, William & Sig .... thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I fear you are right - I'll need a new disk. I'm booked in at the Apple Genius Bar in Bordeaux, France on Wed ... quite a challenge as my French isn't great! The current internal disk is 500gb, does anyone know whether I can upgrade my 21.5" iMac (circa Oct-2009 vintage) to a larger size internal disk, 1Tb or even 2Tb? I already have one external 2Tb drive and another one on order (I have masses of media stored and more planned as I've just taken up photography). Seems a bit of a pain managing with only 500gb internal storage. OR, can you advise me on how I can store all my photos on my new 2Tb external drive - I can't seem to figure out how to set the path for iPhoto to see them (I can't even figure out where they are stored right now!). Same with iTunes, how do I set the default storage to the external drive (I moved everything manually and then imported them all from the new drive - it worked but seemed very convoluted). Any advice on how to manage multiple drives gratefully received. And thanks again for previous replies.

    Has iOS8 destroyed my phone?

    Hi vijay294,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you received a restore error while attempting to update to iOS 8 and now you see the Connect to iTunes graphic on your display. In this situation, I would recommend using recovery mode to restore your iPhone. Please use the instructions located in the attached article to complete this process.

  • System image restore process failed - WSE2012

I need some help. My system drive failed and I'm forced to attempt a recovery using the server backup located on my backup volume. Using a bootable USB stick, I successfully boot in to the installation media, navigate to the repair screen, and select System
Restore. The software attempts to find a suitable backup, which it does and recommends the backup dated 2/5/2013 (about a week ago). I click NEXT, select the EXCLUDE drives to exclude those drives that are part of my storage pool (I've also not selected anything
    to exclude. Here's my selection:
    Disk 4 - USB STICK w/Install Media
Disk 5 - NEW REPLACEMENT DRIVE (fresh)
    Disk 6 - Storage Space
    Disk 7 - Storage Space
It reports that Disk 3 is automatically excluded because it contains the backup. So far all this seems in order.
I proceed to click NEXT to get to the final recovery options page. In addition to the server name and date of the backup, I'm presented with the following:
    \\?\Volume{824f6b2f-3b3a-11e2-93ed-806e6f6e6963}, C:
Upon clicking FINISH and receiving the warning that all drives will be reformatted and partitioned, I'm presented with a dialog box in about 5 seconds that states the following:
    The system image restore failed
An error occurred while performing the recovery operation. Details (link)
Clicking the link presents me with another dialog box that shows various options for ensuring the drive is connected (which it is, Disk 5) and it asks that all USB drives are removed. However, if you remove the installation media, you can't continue anyway.
    Here are my questions:
What on in the name of Microsoft is going on here -- has anyone run into this problem before? According to the instructions, this should be super easy. I've reviewed the following: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj593197.aspx
Should I disconnect the Storage Space drives all together, leaving the new system drive, the backup drive and the USB stick and try again?
Should I install a new copy of Windows Server (with storage drives unplugged) and then attempt to restore.
If the backup was corrupt, wouldn't I get a different error message?
What other options can I try?
I've already made a simple volume on the NEW drive as I read elsewhere that solved someone with a Windows 7 recovery that sounded the same. This did not work for me. I've tried to remove the USB drive, and then process complains and says it can't find the
    path to the install media.
My server is headless and DVD-less, so USB is the only way I'm going to get this to install. I've also already tried moving my USB stick into just about every USB port available.
Finally, this is a Gigabyte  UEFI motherboard.
Someone smarter than me please step up and show me the light! I can't believe the restore process is failing like this.

A brief update since my last post. I've left all the drives plugged in and decided to replace the bootable USB stick method with the tried-and-true external USB DVD drive. Upon boot, I again attempted the recovery option outlined before. However, this time,
    I receive the following message:
Windows cannot restore a system image to a computer that has a different firmware. The system image was created on a computer using BIOS and this computer is using EFI.
I don't believe this is true, but to test the error, I proceeded to configure my BIOS for legacy BIOS support and turned OFF all UEFI support. I again booted to the system and proceeded to attempt the recovery option outlined before. This time, it appeared
to start working, but then resulted in the same exact error message I reported previously just a short 30 seconds later. I attribute this problem to the slower speed of the USB DVD drive.
I reconfigured my system again for UEFI and installed a fresh copy of the WSE2012. This seemed to go without any trouble. Once in the new instance of WSE2012, I attempted to recover from the original backup. At this time, I can only attempt to replace folders
and files and not the entire drive. Needless to say, the process did not complete correctly and I have a half baked of new and my original drive, complete with Dashboard plugins that don't work. The next thing I'm going to try is to install fresh again and
from within WSE2012 attempt to restore from the image again. However, I doubtful that the result will be positive. Stay tuned, more to come.

    Hi all,

  • Factory restore error message - "Product Restore %s failed to restore your system"

While doing a factory restore I am getting the error message - "Product Restore %s failed to restore your system".
Not sure what it means ... I am on a Lenovo 3000 N100. I've been having not so much battery won't charge as battery won't stay charged problems.
When starting up with the battery in ... the battery seems to bedrawing so much from the adapter the N100 shuts down.
While shutdown the battery seems to draw from the cmos battery.
When I power up again the cmos battery is drained ... the bios clock has to be reset.
A few times like this and I took the battery out and just ran on the adapter.
Taking the battery out didn't stop the n100 from timing out(read turning off). What did stop it
is going into the memory panel when its off and power is diconnected and shorting the Cmos battery.
Then when powered up it goes straight into loading the recovery package and actually
gets to the point where it is ready to format the disk before it gives me the message - "Product Restore % failed to restore your system".
Last night I actually got it to factory restore ... but then like a complete idiot I put the battery
back in thinking the restoration would have resolved the charging problem ... it didn't.
I know ... I know ... I'm a couple of months too late for a new battery ... but if anybodies got any ideas
how to get around this ""Product Restore %s failed to restore your system"" so I can get back
    to windows I'd appreciate it.

I've had a similar problem when attempting a restore to factory settings on my Lenovo 3000 N200, running Windows XP.  I resolved it by leaving the battery plugged in, but by disconnecting the AC power adapter. Then when the restore was up and running I then plugged in the adapter so the laptop wouldn't run out of power before completing the restore.

  • Restoring AppSet: Fail

We have Set up a Test single server with upgraded SQL 2008 and have loaded BPC 7.0 Sp05 on the server.  We are now trying to Restore the AppSet but it fails in Step 3 After it completes the first thre substeps of Webfolder, FileDB, SQL Database, the last substep says OLAP database:  Fail.
We are using a backup from the old server.  This is an upgrade from OutlookSoft 4.2 to BPC 7.0.
    Any suggestions?

If this is an attempt to Restore a copy of a version 7 backup, please go back to the original appset and re-process all dimensions and applications, removing any un-used dimensions from the set. Version 7 restore processes re-build the OLAP structures and should there be any unprocessed or failed dimensions prior to the backup, the restore will not work. If this is a backup of a version 4 appset, you will not be able to directly restore the appset into a version 7 installation.  Rather you will need to contact SAP or a certified partner to migrate the appset to version 7.
    Hope this helps.

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Basic troubleshooting is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the issue continues, contact the carrier to troubleshoot the network connectivity issues.

A SQL Profile was run beginning at 12/18/2014 11:11.
A SQL exception can be found at 11:20:03 with the error:
The database principal owns a database role and cannot be dropped.
The issue has to do with the SQL statement just prior to the exception:
    declare @p4 int
    set @p4=NULL
    declare @p5 int
    set @p5=NULL
    exec sp_executesql N'declare @db_user_name sysname
    select @db_user_name = name from dbo.sysusers where sid = SUSER_SID(@user_name) and hasdbaccess = 1
    if (@db_user_name is null)
    begin
    if exists(select * from dbo.sysusers where name = @user_name)
    exec @revoke_result = sp_revokedbaccess @user_name
    exec @grant_result = sp_grantdbaccess @user_name, @db_user_name output
    end',N'@user_name nvarchar(128),@revoke_result int output,@grant_result int output',@user_name=N'----\sp2013uatfarmacct',@revoke_result=@p4 output,@grant_result=@p5 output
    select @p4, @p5
I highlighted the row in red causing the issue. For some reason SharePoint during the Search Restore process try’s to delete the user “------\sp2013uatfarmacct” from the database Search_Service_Application_DB_60bb9889222841aa94f59aed71349a6b
And re-add them again.  But the reason for the failure is because the user “------\sp2013uatfarmacct” is the owner of the database role “SPSearchDBAdmin”, so it cant.
I checked all other Service databases that contain the role SPSearchDBAdmin and they all correctly have the owner as dbo
    NOT ------\sp2013uatfarmacct.
Further checking the SQL trace log a SQL batch is executed at 12/18/2014 11:19:59.790 that states the following:
    -- Drop existing role members
    IF  EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.database_principals WHERE name = N'SPSearchDBAdmin' AND type = 'R')
    Begin
        DECLARE @RoleMemberName sysname
        DECLARE Member_Cursor CURSOR FOR
        SELECT [name]
        FROM sys.database_principals
        WHERE
            principal_id IN
                SELECT member_principal_id
                from sys.database_role_members
                where role_principal_id in (
                select principal_id
                FROM sys.database_principals where [name] = N'SPSearchDBAdmin'  AND type = 'R' ))
        OPEN Member_Cursor;
        FETCH NEXT FROM Member_Cursor
        into @RoleMemberName
        WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
        BEGIN
            exec sp_droprolemember @rolename=N'SPSearchDBAdmin', @membername= @RoleMemberName
            FETCH NEXT FROM Member_Cursor
            into @RoleMemberName
        END;
        CLOSE Member_Cursor;
        DEALLOCATE Member_Cursor;
    End
    -- Drop/Create role
    IF  EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.database_principals WHERE name = N'SPSearchDBAdmin' AND type = 'R')
    DROP ROLE [SPSearchDBAdmin]
    CREATE ROLE [SPSearchDBAdmin]
I highlighted the statement in red that is eventually causing the SP restore to fail. For some unknown reason to me when this statement is executed the new ROLE SPSearchDBAdmin owner is -----\sp2013uatfarmacct
    instead of dbo.
As a test I executed via SQL Management Studio “CREATE ROLE [SPSearchDBAdmin]” and it correctly created the owner as dbo.
So the problem and my question is why when the SP Search Service is restored is the ROLE SPSearchDBAdmin owner being set to “-----\ sp2013uatfarmacct”, which in turn seems to be causing the restore failure?

    Hi!
I believe it is trying to delete a user who owns the schema of the database. You can try changing the schema owner to some other user like "dbo", and then drop the first user.
Below are a few links that can help you with much more details.

  • Discoverer Desktop (4)- Receiving error Attempt to Open Workbook Failed

    Hi,
The reason for this error is multiple people are opening same workbook. This has never been a problem before as the user would receive message: "Open Workbook as Read Only..."
Now they only get the message: "Attempt to Open Workbook Failed."
We have tested here and have determined it is not a generell issue because we have the problem only on two workstations.
I check the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER for diffenerence between the workstations but without any success.
There is no file access problem
    Any idea?
    Thx
    Arnd

    Hi all,
We are having exactly the same problem. I've come to the point that there's a problem between Discoverer Desktop 4i and XP SP3.
    The scenario we have is:
    a) If an user with SP2 creates a workbook and saves it into the network shared folder,
a.1) It can be opened by users with SP2 as many times as the want. They just receive the "Open Workbook as Read Only" warning message.
a.2) Users with SP3 can open it only if the workbook is not open by any other user. After that all users receive the "Attempt to Open..." error message.
a.3) If a user with SP3 makes any change to the workbook and saves it, it doesn't matter which SP version you have, the file becomes "corrupt" and only one user can open it at the same time.
    b) If an user with SP3 creates a workbook and saves it into the network shared folder it can only be opened by one user at the same time
I've also made tests and the same error occurs if the .dis file is located in a local directory (c:\My Documents for example). I can not open it twice in my computer in two different discoverer desktop instances, and I have SP3, while another user with SP2 can.
Any ideas? Our Discoverer Desktop version is 4.1.48.06.00
    Regards.

I tried updating my iPod, and ever since it has not worked at all. If I hold in the lock & home button, it will tell me to plug it into iTunes. Once I do that, it says it will restore but every time, restoring it fails. My iPod is not working at all, and I really have no idea what to do. It is just a black screen, and occasionally the white apple will appear as if it were turning on, but it won't turn on. I just need some suggestions on what to do!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
