Attempting to Boot From, no configuration file found
I started digging out some of these older desktops and the first one has me stumped.
HP d3225 Minitower XP Pro
When I insert usb I get this message: No default or usb configuration directory found. Can someone advise please?
Thanks in advance!!
Does this happen only when the USB devices are inserted and is the PC booted or are you trying to boot from USB?

[SOLVED] Attempting to boot from USB key in UEFI mode
I am attempting to boot from a USB Key in UEFI mode to dual boot windows 8 and arch linux. I'm unsuccessful in getting the USB key to boot in UEFI mode.
I am following the guide on page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … _Interface due to the fact that I am receiving error " No loader found. Configuration files in /loader/entries/*.conf are needed."
I am attempting to use the archiso media and have created refind.conf according to https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/31894#comment102233 in (USB)/EFI/boot/refind.conf
However, I'm stuck on the initial step from the wiki: Install refind-efi pkg. In the usb's filesystem, overwrite the file EFI/boot/bootx64.efi with /usr/lib/refind/refind_x64.efi.
My question is: How do I install the refind-efi package onto the USB key using an arch linux host machine and the USB plugged into the machine.

This is my thought, too. The "memory map has changed" message sounds like the firmware is messing with the way memory is laid out in the middle of the boot process. A firmware update, if available, is likely to be the best way to deal with this problem. If not, trying Fedora's patched GRUB Legacy and GRUB 2 are also worth doing; it's conceivable that one of them includes a workaround for the problem.
2. In your first posting you mention Windows 8 on this machine. Is W8 starting in uefi mode?
This is important, but if the disk uses GPT partitioning, then Windows is starting in EFI mode.
3. If W8 is starting in uefi mode, are you sure that secure boot is disabled?
It is; if it weren't, neither rEFInd nor ELILO could start -- or even if they were configured to start in Secure Boot mode, ELILO doesn't launch its kernels in a way that respects Secure Boot, so the ELILO failure can't be caused by Secure Boot. Also, when launched with Secure Boot active, rEFInd returns a clear error message about a security violation and then returns to its main menu; it doesn't hang the computer.
One possible workaround occurs to me if all else fails: Have rEFInd launch a BIOS version of GRUB. The setup procedure, in outline, is as follows:
Create a BIOS Boot Partition on the disk.
Install the BIOS version of GRUB 2.
Configure rEFInd to include a scan for BIOS-mode boot loaders by uncommenting the "scanfor" line in refind.conf and adding "hdbios" to it.
Thereafter, you'll see a new "generic" icon, which should launch GRUB, which should launch Linux in BIOS mode, even though Windows launches in EFI mode. This will work on most modern UEFI-based computers with a single hard disk, but things get trickier with multiple disks and with some UEFI implementations that lack the necessary firmware features. If a future firmware update fixes the problem, or if a future kernel's EFI stub loader includes a workaround, the EFI-mode booting will become an option once again. -
"Template import error: No VM configure file found" on brand new setup
Previously, I posted Console does not launch OVM 3.1.1, Win7x32 Firefox15/IE8 - Empty .jnlp file which was about VM Console not launching. Since this is a new installation, and it seemed to be a unique problem, I scratched the whole installation and started again from scratch. Everything, including the NFS file server, was re-installed from scratch CD OS installation.
The process is pretty straightforward once you're used to it, and in less than three hours I was ready again to import my first template (a template I had imported before). But now, I submit the the request, and almost immediately the process aborts. (You can see in the information below, that 1 second passes between the Import request (06:32:36) and the failure.)
Thing is, it takes about three minutes, even locally on the web server, to get an index of that large file (tar tzf), and at completion, the vm config file is listed.
Am I misreading the error? My web searches for enlightenment found only one good hit on this error, and in that case it appeared to be an "out of space" issue. In this case, though, I'm importing a 5GB tarfile into a 390GB, otherwise-empty file system, so I don't think that is the issue. The failure in ovs-agent.log is below. What other information may I provide to get to the bottom of this? (Thanks for any guidance/help, of course!)

I'd say the template is corrupt or you only have a partial template.
I did notice the call to the template is based on the short name of the host. Can you confirm the VM manager can access the http path via short name? -
Unable to Initialize Volume Manager from a Configuration File
I'd like to reattach a D1000 to a rebuilt system. The array contains a raid 5 partition that was built with Solaris Volume Manager (Solaris 9). Since it is the same system all controller/target/slice ids have not changed. I was able to restore the Volume Manager configuration files (/etc/lvm) from a tape backup and followed the instructions provided in the Solaris Volume Manager Administration Guide: How to Initialize Solaris Volume Manager from a Configuration File <http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/816-4519/6manoju60?a=view>.
All of the state database replicas for this partition are contained on the disks within the array so I began by creating new database replicas on a local disk.
I then copied the /etc/md.cf file to /etc/md.tab
# more /etc/lvm/md.tab
# metadevice configuration file
# do not hand edit
d0 -r c1t10d0s0 c1t11d0s0 c1t12d0s0 c1t8d0s0 c1t9d0s0 c2t10d0s0 c2t11d0s0 c2t12d0s0 c2t8d0s0 c2t9d0s0 -k -i 32b -h hsp000
hsp000 c1t13d0s0 c2t13d0s0
I then tested the syntax of the md.tab file (this output is actually from my secomd attempt).
# /sbin/metainit -n -a
d0: RAID is setup
metainit: <hostname>: /etc/lvm/md.tab line 4: hsp000: hotspare pool is already setup
Not seeing any problems I then attempted to recreate the d0 volume, but it fails with the error below:
# /sbin/metainit -a
metainit: <hostname>: /etc/lvm/md.tab line 3: d0: devices were not RAIDed previously or are specified in the wrong order
metainit: <hostname>: /etc/lvm/md.tab line 4: hsp000: hotspare pool is already setup
Any suggestions on how to reinitialize this volume would be appreciated.

[SOLVED] boot failure: No inittab file found
Hi,
While trying to upgrade my system according to the recent /usr/bin intervention, I managed to get into an unbootable state:
INIT: No inittab file found
Enter runlevel:
This is because, stupidly, I'd simply removed initscripts. (I thought I'd properly completed the systemd and all previous migrations, considering my system up to date, and figured initscripts was an obsolete remnant.)
pacman -Qqo /bin /sbin /usr/sbin | pacman -Qm -
returned
grub 0.97-21
grub 0.97-21
consolekit 0.4.6-4
initscripts 2012.10.1-1
So I (again, stupidly) removed consolekit and initscripts and upgraded GRUB (by installing grub-bios and following the guide). I then proceeded to upgrade as described in the intervention notice.
This, of course, resulted in the following error on rebooting:
INIT: No inittab file found
Enter runlevel:
I've since spent hours trying to repair the system with a live system (booting arch off a thumb drive) and arch-chroot - but
I don't know what I should install to make things work again
I haven't managed to figure out how to install packages while offline (despite reading through the guide)
Any assistance would be immensely appreciated!

Hi
I have to install a new version on a AP and i just downloaded a .tar file from Cisco.
My question is, can i boot directly from that tar file?
I never tryied this and before doing something wrong i want to be sure it will work. I read somewhere that maybe i have to uncompress the file firt but the AP seems it doesn't have this option.
Any help will be great, thanksWhat files do you have in your flash memory? Can you list them on here.
Is the AP still accessible over the network?
Did you load the .tar file directly onto the AP?
If so then it will not boot with this file. a .tar file is the Cisco equivalent of a ZIP file. Before you can use it you need to "unzip" it. The problem is that the AP doesn't have enough memory to hold the .tar file and the unzipped files. Your best bet may be to copy the .bin file from one of your other access points onto this AP to get it to boot, then use the command in my original post. I've used this command on 130 AP1200s without a single problem. -
Recovering Data from an odb file found on a Dell X51 mobile device.
I have had a db get over written that wasn't getting backed up and now all I have to recover from is an Ora 10g LIte R2 odb file recovered from a Dell Axim X51. I am wondering what is the best way to recover this data from the odb file.
Thank you.If you have all your odb files + conscli.odb + polite.txt files recovered, you could try to sync the databases from another device. just install oracle lite on some other device, copy all the *.odb + polite.txt into \orace directory on the device and setup odbc.txt file according to your databases (you can use odbc.txt from the crashed device if you also restored it). Then you can try to sync the device - the modified data should be send to server.
If you wasn't able to restore the conscli.odb file, you'll probably have to write some custom application which will export the data you need... -
The installer didn't find the hard drive at first, but disk utility was able to find it. So I repaired the disk, and permissions, then quit utility.
The installer was then able to locate the hard drive so I went ahead and reinstalled leopard in hopes that I could use the computer.
However, half way through my reinstall, it froze. So I tried booting it back up from the disc, yet now neither the installer or the disk utility can locate my hard drive.
Is there anything I can do at this point other than buying a new hard drive? Its starting to sound like a failed hard drive. If disk utility can't find the internal hard drive, it probably dead.

Creating threads based on information read from a configuration file
Hi. I'm writing a program where I need to use threading. I've done some threading in my past, but I'm no expert. What I need to do is create a number of threads dependant on how many are requested
So I have a conf file where:
SomeValue = String1, String2, String3, String4
I read those values and right now I stick them in an Array. So in this case I have four slots in the array filled.
How can I declare a simple unique thread for each of them?
I've searched the forums and found a few references to this, but I'm not able to make it work. I'm still googling for answers now. If anyone understands what I'm attempting and can help I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
JamesThanks for the reply. I'm looking at the tutorials, but I'm having some trouble understanding. It's been quite a while since I played with threads and I can't find the code I did them in to refresh my memory. I have a small application in one class with several funtions like:
public class MyProgram {
public void funtion1() {
does something
public void function2() {
does something
public MyProgram(String args[]) {
calls functions;
public static void main(String[] arguments)
MyProgram instance = new MyProgram(arguments);
} Where do I implement runnable in a case like this?
Do I get rid of public static void main somehow?
Does MyRunnable need to be a seperate class?
Back to the tutorials....
Thanks,
James -

read those default values from a file? I guess the point is that I want
to be able to store different control settings for different users with
one VI. Maybe possibly use the File I/O VI's to load up default control
values that way. Is it possible?
Thanks,

After trying many various ways of storing configuration data, the way I use
the most is to set up a "configuration global", a global that consists of
basically a single cluster into which I place anything about the application
that I want to configure and store. I usually include the application's path,
DASQ settings, a
nd user preferences. You can then read/write this cluster
anytime during your test session. You can provide user access to specific
portions of the global through a tabbed dialog box and allow multiple records
in your config file which can be accessed at any time. -
I was in the midst of a Firefox session w/two windows open. Nothing special about the sites. No fancy javascripts or anything. When I closed the second window and opened the "History, Show all History" pull-down, the Library screen had no data in it.
I looked for the Bookmarks.html file in my profile and it is missing. I tried renaming an old .bak file from a couple years ago and I can open it as a file and see the text of it displayed but Firefox will not recognize it as and open it as the Backups file.
Following the directions already posted - using "History, Show all History" then the "Import and Backup, Restore" process - allows Firefox to see all the backups, but trying to restore from any of them yields the "Unable to process the backup file" error message.
I have re-started my machine from a cold start - twice now.The file that stores bookmarks is probably damaged, for details on how to fix that see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_process_the_backup_file_-_Firefox

Macbook Pro issues, Randomly logs me out, takes several attempts to boot from sleep
Hi there,
I bought my macbook pro (2013, I5) about 9 months ago. Recently I've been having issues where start-ups will take several attempts before I can finally load my desktop. Coming out of sleep, oftne times I can't move my mouse or type into the password box, the screen will then go dark, I hit escape to bring the login screen back up but once again I can't do a thing. This will happen a few times until I can finally get in.
In the last week as well, I've had a few occurences where I'll be in the middle of typing out a word document, and I'll get logged out for no reason. Luckily I can recover my work but it's stilla nuisance.
The system diagnostics report for the last such event is below.

I have taken it into the genius bar for all this, and the laptop cleared all their tests, so I have no idea what to do. Any help is appreciated!BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps? -
Mid 2006 Macbook Pro won't boot (from HD or optical)
My mid 2006 Macbook Pro will not boot from the hard disk, or from the internal DVD. I am currently running the latest version of Lion (10.7).
I tried searching the forums and found a similar issue here:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1687899?start=0&tstart=0
But that was with a Mac Mini. And it doesn't look like the OP issue was ever resolved. I am having the exact same problem.
When attempting a normal boot from the internal HD of the Macbook Pro. It will make the happy chime of a successful POST. It will display the Apple logo. And that's as far as she gets.
No spinning wheel, no error image, no nothing. Eventually the system will start spinning up the fans as if it were under load (this was after about a half hour of just letting it sit there).
Doing a verbose boot, it never went past this:
com.apple.driver.Apple.IntelCPUPowerManagement
Photo of verbose boot:
Here's what I've tried.
1. Bought a brand new battery (as the current one was at death's door)
2. Zapped PRAM (Apple + Option + P + R)
3. Reset SMC according to these directions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US
4. Attempted to boot to my original Tiger (10.4) install DVD, only to stop at this point during a verbose boot (Apple V):
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components; use only one style

5. I am able to put her in Target Disk Mode (hold T at boot). Then with a firewire cable I can connect it to my wife's Macbook 13" and I am able to run disk utility on it! Disk Utility did find and repair errors, however, it still refuses to boot.
6. I attempted to boot from my wife's Macbook 13" in Target Disk Mode. I put her machine in Target disk mode. Connected the firewire cable. Powered on my 15" MBP while holding the option key. Then I selected her drive as the boot disk... however it still refuses to boot even from a known working HD.
7. Finally, I swapped around RAM DIMMs with no change in behavior.
Help! I know she's an older gal (Laptop is 6 years old now) but I'm not exactly flush with cash and would rather not give up on her just yet.My Mac started freezing (colored pinwheel) every time I tried using any application (i.e. Safari, iPhoto). After restarting for the 2nd time, it would no longer boot - makes start up sound but gets stuck on gray screen w/ apple icon. I tried resetting PRAM also - did nothing. I decided to reinstall OS; problem now is my HD is nowhere to be found! I am a tech dummy so this is way beyond my comprehension...I'm not seeing my HD from the Disk Utility either???
Side question...I backed up my files (mostly pics JPEG and videos) on DVD (had to compress to save). Why can't I open files on PC? -
Cloned volume gets stuck at boot "Waiting for Network File System"
I've used "Carbon Copy Cloner" many times with success and no problems (v 2.3 , default settings, make destination bootable) as I migrated to larger drives or make backups in advance of a major OS upgrade.
Last time I was successful, I was at OS 10.3.5. I use 3rd drive to boot my Mac, then clone the one non-boot drive to the other. I do the disk repairs & permission repairs as the normal course of this process, before & after. I am now at 10.3.9. I am do this clone in prep to go to 10.4 so I have a good back in the event of later problems.
When I attempt to boot from the newly cloned partition, it goes fine on the boot process until it hangs at the "Waiting for Network File System" step and never gets past there. I've never had this happen before. I retired all the steps, even ran "Diskwarrier", but no change.
I am not trying to run from a remote or network drive, just a 2nd drive in my
G4 from which I have previously been able to boot (until this last clone attempt that is).
I googled the symptoms ""Waiting for Network File System"", found it to be common, but no real answers. Is this one of those annoying UNIX things? Any ideas how to fix / turn-off whatever is hanging the boot up? Thanks in advance!Hi Kool,
So there seems to be a "speed-bump" around 10.3.9. No wonder I have had the same results with a different tint. I went to Drive Genius to clone this one. Results with that were interesting.
If I did a [Device] clone, it would take and show at start with 'option' key... and work just like my internal with 3 accounts on it... login and proceed like it was internal. If I did a [Volume] clone, it would not show up at start with the 'option' key... I'd have to boot it from System Preferences > Start-up Drive. Once booted, it had no login screen so all the files were accessible. I took the clone of this 3 account PB and tried it on an iBook. Had to boot from System Preferences too, also, all the account were accessible from that machine... implying that anyone who had that drive could get past/into my files that would be secure on my computer, but not on the clone. If I took the [Device] clone and booted from the ibook at start with the option key, it would not get past the login screen... altho the mouse worked and I could click on the name, that was as far as it got, Froze.
So, I have figured, for safety, a [Device] clone is it, as long as the original computer lives. The safety features for login seem to be hardwired in the chip that the clone was made from (The iBook had 2 accounts but not my 3). If safety is not an issue, the [Volume] clone is fine... like moving to a newer OS on the same computer. It would seem from your experimentations that the situations with this 10.3.9 is just a hick-up and is solved in 10.4.3 with CCC v3...
Thanks for your info... I am thinking of going to Tiger, but I am so fond of this Panther...
