Attempting To Bring Logic Pro Home..
Hello forum. First time posting so I help you can help with kindness.
For the record, I have used the search function and will continue to do s0, but I'd like to have some recent opinions on purchasing a new Macbook Pro with Logic 7. I currently use Logic at work although I'm still getting pretty used to Logic let alone the Environment itself.
I attempted to build a Macbook in the Apple store, and my cost came to about ohhh...$5000 with a monitor included. I already own a G5, but I need a laptop for use when I am in Pennsylvania. Is it possible to easily install your own ram into a macbook pro? I'd rather purchase for newegg since the ram from Apple seems to be on the extremely expensive side. I'd rather not run into system incompatibilities u know?
Also what's the opinion on using a Seagate 300 gig 7200rpm external drive for recording audio? Any issues?
Any other suggestions you'd might want to add before I take the plunge? I know I just missed the 7.2 update so I'm considering just waiting for L8, and installing Live on the Macbook for now. I'd value any thoughts and opinions on the subject.
Welcome to the forum!
Seagate... seagate... seagate... that's ringing bells... do a Logic forum search for "Seagate" within the last month or so. I think someone reported a serious problem with those drives. Could be wrong tho...
I can't tell you which RAM is reliable or not, but I'm sure people will chime in with good suggestions. But there is an Apple Store line that goes something like, "well, if you run into a problem with your computer and 3rd party RAM is installed, it might void your warranty". I had a salesman try to pull this on me at my local Apple store when I brought my G5 in with a hardware problem. I said to him that the instruction manual shows you how to install RAM, and it doesn't specify anything about voiding warranties or only using Apple RAM... He had no choice but to back down and honor the warranty.
There are plenty of 3rd party RAM manufacturers out there who make perfectly reliable RAM. Apple doesn't manufacture its own RAM; they get it from a "third party" too!
Food for thought.

Logic Pro Home based studio on 10K budget
Continuation of discusson from:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=436969&tstart=15
I will sumarize in the next message.I think anyone would love to have this setup, but I can't resist a few comments:
I think an appropriate setup, without buying any
truly cheap stuff, would be more like $6000.
Example:
- Mac mini CoreDuo, 2G RAM, keyboard, mouse $1160
- 20" Dell Monitor $500
- external hard drive $200
- Focusrite Saffire $400
- monitors $900 (lots of good choices)
- Rode NTK $500
- cables, etc $200
- Logic Pro $900
- MIDI keyboard $500 (Fatar)
- some more software, samples $900
For the price of a Mini, 2G of RAM, and a $500 monitor, you can get a 17" iMac with 2G of RAM. (I went to the store with my heart set on a mini and walked out with the iMac for this reason.)
There's no need for an external hard drive right off the bat. They are only getting cheaper and bigger while you wait.
Few people need more than two simultaneous inputs, and fewer still need more than two outputs. For $400, the Saffire looks like a pretty awesome deal. I think I'd feel a little cramped with this setup though. I'm thinking some day you may want to have a buddy or two over with his guitar for a little jam; you'd be wishing you had some more mics. For just a little more you can get a Mackie Onyx 1220 with four mic pres and four stereo inputs, all of them running simultaneously.
I would also recommend getting a dynamic (an SM58 is as good as any) and a pair of good cheap condensers for X-Y recording, in addition to your main mic. One really expensive mic isn't as good as four or five decent ones.
(Don't forget that your mac will have a pair of 24/192 input, and the mini also has a S/PDIF input.)
If you are going to spend money for a nice keyboard controller, forget buying a controller. I would put the extra money into a cheap digital piano like a Roland RD-300 or a Yamaha P-series. Dedicated MIDI controllers have poor keyboard actions, and the RD will absolutely blow away the audio quality of the piano in EXS24 while using zero of your CPU. Plus, you have a real zero-latency piano in your studio for when you just want to play.
I think 1200 for monitors as budhalite suggested is a little over the top, but I'll admit that I am saving up for a pair of HR824's right now. I don't like the events as much.
And finally, something I discovered when I set up my first studio, almost nobody ever correctly estimates how much they need to spend on wire. In a small pro studio or a moderately large home studio, wire and patchbays can add up to more than the computer.
When you get your dream studio set up, you will find that all sorts of things you never thought of will become weakest links. Soundproofing, room size, computer fan noise, the guy nextdoor with the CB hobby. There will always be something to spend that next pension check on. -
'You can't open the application "Logic Pro X" because someone else is using it.'
Hello.
I have two user accounts on my MacBook and if I attempt to open Logic Pro X in ‘user 2’ while it is already open in ‘user 1’, I get ‘You can’t open the application “Logic Pro X” because someone else is using it.’
Now I know I can simply quit Logic in ‘user 2’ but this shouldn’t be happening should it? Any ideas anyone? Thanks.Really? I wouldn't have expected that. Well, I may be wrong then and basing my assertion on a much older Mac OS (10.5?), since I haven't used multiple open user accounts for years.
However, seeing the wording of the message it is quite obvious that this is by design.
I think it is better to have as few programs as possible open anyway, just so Logic can use all available CPU and RAM resources optimally. Maybe if you have 16 GB or more that is not so important anymore. -
Not able to buy Logic Pro X from Mac App store HELP
Okay so this has been an on going issue for the past few days, I feel like I've learned everything in garageband and I am ready to move onto Logic, but once I attempt to purchase it off of the Mac App Store, I get a pop up saying "your purchase could not be completed" and then it gives the iTunes support link, I click ok and then I get another pop up stating, "we could not complete your request; there was an error in the App Store. Please try again later.(null)" now when I initially attempted to purchase Logic Pro X I received the pop up saying that my credit card had been declined but I had just entered in my card number incorrectly is that what caused all of this? and how can I resolve this issue because I am dying to try out Logic. thank you.
Click here and ask the iTunes Store staff for assistance.

Unable to purchase logic pro x?
I keep attempting to buy Logic Pro X on my Mac App Store and it will not let me.
It keeps giving me the error: "We cannot complete your request. There was an error in the Mac App Store."
I am able to download other applications. My Macbook Pro is brand new, 15', Retina Display. I have more than enough money on my credit card. I have tried resubmitting my payment info, changing my Apple ID and password, signing in and out, rebooting, and a million combinations of all those. This is the third day this has been going on and it is infuriating. I paid ample amounts of cash for this computer and all the features that come with it, and a glitch like this occurs? What gives, Apple?I think you have become very confused about 64/32bit stuff..
Simply put; (well as simply as is possible... in layman's terms )
OS X Lion or Mountain Lion runs in 64bit on 64bit hardware architecture. Modern Macs all have 64bit architecture
Logic Pro 9 could run in both 32bit or 64bit mode in Lion or Mountain Lion. The benefit of running Logic Pro in 64bit mode was it could access the Mac's memory above the 4GB 32bit addressing limit. Running any app (including Logic Pro 9) in 32bit mode... limited it's use of memory to 4GB as a maximum... so if you had 16GB of RAM installed most of it was never used by a 32bit app.
Again the fact your OS X is running in 64bit is neither here nor there in regards to the apps themseves.. as both 32bit and 64bit apps could run in a 64bit OS. However older 32bit OS's could not run 64bit applications.
Logic Pro X only runs in 64bit mode... and requires a 64bit OS such as Mountain Lion.
Hope this helps... -
M-Audio Fast Track USB interface not compatible with Logic Pro X and Yosemite
Hello All!
I've been trying to simply record some guitar and vocal tracks onto the latest version of Logic Pro X. It worked before I downloaded the update of Yosemite, however now, I can't find a solution to my problem. I've tried everything! Installed new drivers onto the M-Audio and even tried to search for a later update of Yosemite. I have read a few things online about how Yosemite doesn't accept 3rd party drivers. So any USB plugged in to the macbook/mac that isn't mac based it doesn't accept.
Please can someone help me solve his issue!
Thankyou!
FelixI know many, many of us who are running things just fine.
I have to be really honest with you Ben and say... Where are you getting that idea from because it simply isn't so.....
I have a quite large client list of Logic users from all over the world... and of those that have attempted to use Logic Pro X and Yosemite together... over 80% have had to revert back to a previous configuration because of performance and/or stability related issues...
I personally, have on test here at the studios... 7 different Macs ranging from 2010 Mac Mini i7 Servers to 2011 32GB 3.4Ghz iMacs.. to a maxed out 2013 i7 MBP to a top of the line 2014 Mac Pro and all have demonstrated issues regarding performance and stability with LPX and 10.10.x using a variety of different Audio/Midi interfaces, all of which have supposedly 10.10 compatible drivers... and all of which have no such issues running LPX under Mavericks...
Just a quick scan across the various forums.. indicates that very few people are successfully running LPX under Yosemite without performance problems.... so that's why I am asking where you are seeing 'many many people" because I am just not seeing that myself...
Cheers..

I recently had to wipe my MacBook and reinstall. When attempting to install Logic Pro, I am getting an error stating that the installation failed because there is no software found. The DVD is fine. What do i do now?
Retry, it worked for me!

MBP as centerpiece of Logic Pro 7 home studio?
Hello All.
I am VERY close to placing an order for my first Mac and right now its neck and neck between the MacBook Pro and the 20-inch Intel iMac.
My main purpose for the Mac is to be a dedicated computer for serious hobbyist music creation with Logic Pro 7, Garageband & various plugins, web surfing, management of an iTunes Library over 12000 songs and occasional iLife usage. I currently use Cubase, Reason and various VST's on my PC. My songs consist mainly of sofwtare instruments, a few breakbeat loops or beats that I create myself. Eventually, I will add those programs and VST's to the Mac when the universal binary versions of them come out.
I've been debating this for weeks now and I'm seriously torn between the MBP and the IMac; both have their good and bad points. For the MBP, I love the idea of portability and not being stuck at a desk when I'm working on my tracks. This would be especially handy when my wife starts bugging me to use the Dell PC that currently sits on said desk or when my 20-month son gets too rowdy and chases me out of the room. I don't travel much nor do any professional recording or touring, but I must admit the ability to even just play around or surf the web from another room in the house is appealing which is why I'm considering it.
On the other hand, I'm definately not rich and I'd be paying a serious premium for that portability. Plus when you add laptop accessories, the price gets up there rather quick. Alternatively, I could get an Intel iMac with the same configuration, Logic Pro 7 and the 7.2 Crossgrade for about the same price of the MBP and accessories WITHOUT Logic Pro 7. Furthermore, I've gotten used to the 21" CRT we use for our Dell PC and I'm wondering if the 15.4" screen of the MBP would wear on me after awhile. I could get the iMac with all the same specs with that big beautiful display, but it would obviously take up more space and I'll lose the portability.
1) Anyway, have any of you ever used a laptop (like the PowerBook G4, for example) as the centerpiece of your home studio? How did that work out? Is that something that you'd recommend or would I be better off with an iMac desktop?
2) Also, should I be concerned with the heat that laptops like the MBP and PowerBowk put out? I was gonna have the 100GB 7200RPM drive installed in the MBP so I wonder if drive noise could be a factor here as well?
3) Lastly and on a side note, regardless of whether or not I get the MBP or the iMac, I'd be using my Edirol PCR-50 MIDI USB Keyboard Controller to control the software instruments and plug-ins. If I simply plugged this into the computer via USB, would I experience any latency issues with Core Audio/Core MIDI of OS X? Or is a MIDI absolutely necessary? Does OS X allow you change the latency settings?
Thanks in advance for your input.
Mac OS X (10.4.4)Hello
i used to have a Soundcraft 24/8/2 mixboard, a MPC 2000XL, an EMU e6400, a MicroModular, a Nord Lead, three DBX266XL compressors, a TC M-One, a Lexicon MPX100, a Sherman Filterbank ...
i've sold everything except the nordlead and bought a powerbook G4 1.5 ghz with Logic Express 7.
i've never been as productive as now. I used to be forced to compose in front of the same stupid wall. now i can make music anywhere. i bought some good headphones, plug them directly to the powerbook soundcard and make music most of the time on the sofa next to my girlfriend while she watches tv.
i have a super small usb midi keyboard (m-audio o2) which i plug when i need to enter notes. sometimes i even enter notes using the CapsLock keyboard integrated in logic so i don't even need my usb keyboard.
when i've finished my track i go to my office and plug my firewire soundcard (Echo Audiofire 8, lots of inputs / outputs, useful to plug guitar / bass / mic and eventually a friend's computer) and check the mix on my monitors.
i'll never go back to a desktop computer again. i'm not a pro working for any kind of business, i'm just a musician making my demo. my mixes sounds as good as or better than when i had all this audio hardware.
i have two sessions in os X, one internet, one audio. i surf the web heavily, no virus, no ********. sometimes i even load safari while boucing a track in logic, professionals will tell you it's baaaaaaad, i don't care.
so :
1) i recommend having a laptop and good headphones (100$ minimum) if you're just making music for pleasure. pro need big G5, we don't.
2) i don't have problem with heat. when it's on my thigs it can get very hot which is not recommended. you must let the heat get out.but i didn't have any problem
3) no midi latency problem at all, wether it is pure midi or usb.
Lastly : i think the MacBook Pro is too expensive. a powerbook G4 is too old for big sessions. wait for the MacBook (the iBook successor), which is supposed to be intel 1.67 ghz solo core 13"3 inch screen, a little more than 1000$, and may be released on April 1st (apple aniversary)
i'm currently waiting for my copy of Logic Pro 7.2 to arrive, and i'll get a MacBook as soon its released
(be careful there are near to 0 plugins out on intel macs yet be sure you will only use logic plugins)
cheers

Logic Pro 7.0.1(840) crashes when attempting to bounce
Hi, folks.
I've seen this problem posted in this forum before, but it doesn't appear that anyone's come up with an answer yet, and the rest of the interwebnets is nearly silent on the issue as well.
I'm attempting to bounce my final mix down to stereo .aiff. When I either click the Bounce button at the master fader or choose Bounce from the file menu, I get a brief "beach ball" and then Logic crashes. This is before any Bounce dialog box comes up, so I have no opportunity to choose Realtime vs. Offline Bounce (unless there is another place to do this in the application).
I have repaired permissions as suggested by other posts to no effect.
Does anyone have any insight into this problem? I thought it might be a filename issue similar to the one I was having when exporting from Garageband but I made sure to give the project a Unix-friendly name.
I'll paste what seem like relevant excerpts from the crash log below. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello, good day, my question is, buy Logic Express, but then put logic pro 9 in the same price, I can not buy logic studio, and let me know if I buy now logic pro, I can buy separately after jams that bring logic studio. thanks
José, if you buy and download Logic Pro in App Store now, the best option would be to buy an upgrade to Logic Studio. I don't think Jam Packs are available any more in Apple Store, besides it will be more expensive buying them one by one than upgrading to Studio.
hi I am attempting to use a Zed R-16 with Logic Pro 9, how can I setup a bounce for output 17-18 this is where the mixer sums (the audio outputs on the zed come through 17-18)
I would like to be able to quickly bounce down my mixes, through the Zed outputs.Pancenter...
Yes... but I have come across some setups that came with a native SL (and even one Lion!) installation.. that somehow had a corrupted or older Prokit installed for some unknown reason... and given it's a quick fix to try.. I thought I'd mention it..
I frankly don't think it is entirely a Prokit issue itself, but it wouldn't do any harm to try and install v7 just in case it is part of the problem...
+1 on the UAD stuff....
Also, at the time it crashed... according to the logs...the OP was running Ableton Live at the same time, presumably rewired with Logic... so add all that together with UAD plugins... and that's quite a load on the system...
Finally in thread 32 there is a weird exception msg relating to the Trash2 plugin.. that I haven't seen before...

Logic Pro 9.1.5 on OS X SL. When attempt to "save as," Logic crashes
When I attempt to "save as," screen dims monentarily and logic crashes. Report states "unknown firewire device." I downloaded and reinstalled latest updates for RME Fireface 800 driver. Have also reinstalled Logic. Same results. Can anyone offer help or suggestions? Thanks, TJ
I was seeing the same problem... I'm a new Logic user, switching from DP, and so it was a minty fresh install of Logic Pro 9.1.7 under ML.
It turned out to be a third party graphics driver that was screwing up some internal process: specifically, the dirver for AirDisplay, an iOS app that lets you use an iPad as a portable monitor. When I removed the driver, the problem cleared up instantly, and I have done 9 hour sessions in Logic since then without a single hiccup.
If you're running a third party driver, remove it, repair permissions and see if the problem clears up. -
Attempt to access files shuts down logic pro
Hi,
I'm trying to open a file with logic Pro That used to open but now when i try to open it, it shuts down logic instantly!
The file is on a firewire drive but there are other files on that drive that give me no problems!
I copied the file to my system drive and simply tried to open the file and it seemed to freeze my mac finder and cleared my desk top for a moment only the file still did not open. Only a finder window showing my drives.
In the file are some audio file and the logic song that they are associated with.
Does anyone know what this could be ??...
Thanks!Due to the current unavailability of clairvoyants and mind-readers in the forum, we respectfully request you supply sensible, complete details.

if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).

How to transfer logic pro from home mac to mac laptop?
does not work with migration assistant
Hi
If you purchsed Logic Pro from the Appstore, simply download it again. It will be listed under the 'Purchases' button in the AppStore application
If you have the original 'Studio' installer dvd's, re-install from those, and download the necessary software updates

Logic pro 9 crashes when I try to do... anything
Hi folks,
I'm running logic pro 9.1.8 on a mid 2010 iMac with Yosemite 10.10.2.
When I open up logic, on it's own or by selecting a project it loads up as normal, but then if I try to play the track or select the Logic Pro or Help drop-down menus at the top, an unexpected error occurs and it crashes out.
I had my machine at work for a while, and had it hooked up to a Behringer x32 which was acting as an audio interface as well as a control surface - that's the last time it worked. Now that it's home and not currently hooked up to anything, it's crashing - could that be a factor?
Any ideas? I'm about ready to upgrade to Logic Pro X in the near future, but am worried that the problem will persist even then! Also, I'm not quite finished yet.
For the boffins, here's the crash report:
