I had the same problem. And to think I actually HESITATED at installing the update. Oh wait... this happened AFTER the update. Funny how often that happens, eh? But I digress...
Anyway, I had two errors- initially the iPod stated my music library was somewhere else, and did I want to sync to that library. When I said yes, it reverted then to the "attempting to copy to disk"error. Further, iTunes showed that my iPod on the iTunes was EMPTY. However, my actual iPod hadn't lost any data. Confused yet? So am I.
*Last ditch effort- I went back in, and updated all my permissions, did a permission repair and then a permission verify.
    * Also did a disk verify on the iPod to make sure it wasn't sick.
*I also drug a new song into my library.
*Changed from the USB plugin to the firewire. (Although I did this earlier in the day, and hadn't seen a noticeble change)
    * Opened the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. (should have done that a few hours ago)
When my first pop up asked about did I want to sync to the mystery persons library, I said yes. (At the worst, I have all my music and could reimport all 30G of it, if necessary.) And immediately, the sync began, and began appropriately. However, it IS re-syncing every single song I had on the iPod to begin with.
I suspect something nasty happened in the iTunes update, ever since the intel thing happened, the updates have been a bit sketchy. I really like Apple products, but I've gone through 3 iPods due to software meltdowns, and it's a bit frustrating.
    Good luck!

    help!!

Max. path length is 255 characters, or perhaps there are some non-displaying characters hidden there. Try dropping a song you want to add to iTunes into the Automatically to iTunes folder to see if that works any better.

Right click the filename that won't download and selsct 'Get Info'. Look at the file path, does it have a //?// in it? That is a problem with Amazon downloads that prevent iTunes from finding the file. Use 'Add Folder' to add the album to your library and try syncing it again

This problem does seem pretty random, affecting just a small number of tracks. Apparently it is due to some file corruption or something... Anyway, this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2654317?start=15&tstart=0 has a couple of solutions spelled out. Basically the same thing that a-monk-at-large suggested above. (Delete and redownload the offending tracks.)

  • Im trying to put music on my iPod, but it keeps saying "iPod cannot be synced unknown error occurred". Whats wrong?

I tried to put music on my ipod and it keeps saying "cannot sync ipod unknown error occured" whats wrong??

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • Ipod cannot be synced unknown error occured (-48)

    _Help needed please!_
I've just got a new laptop, downloaded the latest version of itunes on it, connected my ipod to it (old click wheel version 20GB) and this error message keeps popping up:
*'The ipod "ipods name" cannot be synced. An unknown error occured. (-48)'*
I've never had a problem with my ipod or itunes before, but now this error keeps occuring and it won't let me add any music to my ipod or remove any music from my ipod.
I preferably don't want to restore my ipod because i don't have all the music on it on my new laptop, so I'd lose a lot. I gather syncing the ipod will match what's in the itunes library to the actual ipod? I don't want to do this anyway as I have nothing in my itunes library & i don't want the music that is on my ipod removed, so i'm very confused....
*Anyone have any ideas of what i should do?????*

Your iPod will mimic your iTunes so if there is no music in the library it will wipe the other music that you have on there off so if you don't want to lose the music its probably not a good idea to connect it
    as for the error
the same thing happened to mine for a while when i first got my ipod it would sync 250 songs or so and then come up with the same thing.

What is going on with this alert message " Attempting to copy to the disk " Ipod" failed the disk could not be read from or written to." I down loaded a song from Itunes and all of the sudden I get this message and Itunes went crazy, it wouldn't eject my Ipod, I took it to apple and they restored my Ipod saying it was fine, then I get home and I can't put alot of songs in my library back on it, itunes keeps repeating that message. I had no problem putting them on before. I have uninstalled both Itunes and Ipod updater numerous times to no avail HELP!

  • Solved "Attempting to copy to disk "ipod" failed. Could not be read from or

Finally found a solution that worked for me when getting this error message on an 2nd Gen. iPod Nano.
There is a lot of discussion on this topic with no real answers coming back other than to read this article/topic. So, I wanted to share a solution that worked on mine.
The background: Computer running Windows XP Pro. Up-to-date iTunes and iPod software. I downloaded several CDs into iTunes and synced with no problem. I made a few purchases from iTunes Store and would get to one song that when I tried to sync, the following error message appeared; "Attempting to copy to the disk "ipod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." When I deleted the song, then I could sync without receiving the error message, but the purchased song would not be included. I restored my iPod, my iTunes was up-to-date, ran chk dsk, emailed support, searched the forums, followed instructions, re-downloaded the problem song from iTunes Store, BUT as long as that problem song was included, I could not sync without getting the error message.
The solution (this worked in my situation): After doing all of the above and not getting rid of this problem, I set the iPod to manually manage my music and synced the iPod (without the problem song, which was already deleted from iTunes). When I deleted the song from the iTunes library, I would always click the button to keep the song in the files instead of sending it to trash. I then went into the iTunes music folder where my songs were kept and opened the file for the problem song. I dragged the song back into my purchases folder in iTunes. From the purchases folder, I dragged the song over to my iPod in iTunes. Then synced. The problem song synced without any problems and the error message did not appear. Thinking that something was still not right, I went back and clicked on the button to NOT manually manage my music and then re-synced. Same good result. No error message. The problem song sings along just fine now with no more error message.
I haven't tried to download another song just yet, so this may not hold, but at least this worked and resolved this problem song. There may be some other factors through all of the work that I did above in trying to resolve this problem that contributed, but it wasn't until I set the iPod to manually manage the music and brought back in the problem song that the error message disappeared. Hopefully this might help. It worked for me so I'm happy now.

I see you've stumbled upon the catch-all article for this incredibly generic error message. Note the phrasing of it: "DISK cannot be READ FROM or written to." Notice that the error doesn't specifically state that it's the iPod disk that cannot be read or written. I used to get this error all the time when I had my library stored on a remote server. The issue being that my machine couldn't access my songs fast enough to copy them to the iPod w/o timing out, and so the disk, in this case my file server, could not be read from. Since you mentioned previously that you're having some anomalies with your library, I would say concentrate on correcting that, rather than worrying that your iPod is kaput.

  • Attempting to copy the disk "IPOD" failed. Disk could not be read from or written to?

    So.....
I own a 5th genereation Ipod Nano. On a windows PC.
On my iTunes all my music and playlists exist. On my actual Ipod it only shows 3/4 of my music (for some reason it wont sync the rest). It also shows zero playlists on my Ipod. I now cant sync new music onto the device, despite it showing up on my library. Also I've noticed that for some reason the artwork is messed up e.g. the artwork for Aerosmith is now showing up when a Thin Lizzy song plays :S
I have tried restoring to to factory setting but got the same error message!
Please please please can somebody help me fix it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you worked through the suggestions in this Apple support document yet?

  • Could not copy song to Ipod Touch due to unknown error (-50)

I just received a new third generation Ipod Touch as a gift and installed the latest iTunes directly from Apple's website onto my computer (Windows 7 32-bit). I added my music folder to the library and imported an m3u playlist to iTunes. Then I connected my iTouch, followed the instructions to set it up, and then I wanted to sync my songs to my iTouch. I only wanted to sync the songs on my "Favorites" playlist that I imported, so under the Music sync settings, I selected the option to only sync selected songs, playlists, etc. and selected the Favorites playlist.
Then I attempted to sync the songs, but only a few songs would sync before an error popped up saying that it could not copy a specific song to the device due to an unknown error (-50). This error sometimes repeats for multiple songs and then the syncing stops. Each time I try to sync it again, it might sync a few more songs, but will always be interrupted by the error, after which it stops syncing. These songs are MP3 files. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes.
This is extremely frustrating and I don't know what to do. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

I've managed to fix the problem and discovered the reason for it. When I dragged the playlist to the iTouch section in my iTunes (instead of pressing the "Sync" button) to sync the playlist to my device, it synced everything except for the handful of songs that were giving me errors. Then the error messages it displayed were more helpful in indicating what the problem was. They could not locate the song in the playlist on my computer because I had changed the MP3 tags a long time ago, sometime after I added them to the playlist, and it never updated. (Note: the playlist I was syncing was originally made in Zune player and then I saved it as m3u format) Hope this helps someone with a similar problem in the future.

  • I am getting this error: "There was a problem downloading i0S 3.3.3 Software Update for an iPod touch". An unknown error occurred (8288)."

I have a first gen iPod running on 2.2.1 that will not upate to 3.3.1. after purchasing the update from Apple. How do I get a refund or, if possible actually get it to update?  I'd like to be able to use some new apps like Netflix and Facebook, but most apps now require newer at least 3.3.1.

    - Try uninstalling iTunes version 10.5 and instlaling 10.4. You will have to Google to find it.
