Attempting to copy to the disk "My shortname's iPod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to.

I get this error since i want to upgrade my music in my ipod 5th gen.
I have done the 5 R's. I cannot believe my iPod gor ruined when i only listen to music when i go to sleep.
Please can someone who has gotten this same error explain what they did to remove it? What will i have to do to get this fixed. I bought the ipod on Dec. 15 2005, i cant believe it went broke...
My 3rd gen ipod never broke up ever....

I think one of the 5 R's is restore so I won't mention it.
You can try to use Disk utility. It's standard software with the Mac OS and should be in Applications under utilities.
plug in your ipod make sure it shows up. Go to Disk utility. choose your ipod from your source list. choose to verify disk. It should be able to see if anything is wrong with the disk. If it says the disk needs to be repaired you can repair.
you can also try to run the system's checker in the ipod.
press th menu+middle button then the middle+back buttons. I think. But I've never tried to do that so I don't know how it works.
good luck

"attempting to copy to the disk C:\ failed. the file name was invalid or too long." This was the message that I keep getting after trying to "add folder to library" of multiple tracks from an external hard drive. it only happens after a certain period of time.. i get about half of my tracks added before this message pops up. when i first got my i pod it worked fine. but after i hooked up my i pod several times without having that external drive on... the i pod took over that drive letter that my external drive used to use. so.. when i turned on my external drive, it was given a new letter.. then i tunes would not recognize those 1500 tracks that came from my external drive (explanation points listed next to tracks). so.. I deleted all of those files manually, then tried to add folder to library again from the new letter coordinating to my external hd. I kept getting that message above. after that i deleted all files associated with i tunes.. and uninstalled i tunes.. then did a reinstall.. did i tunes update from site... and tried to just add the set of tracks from that external hd... still same **** error. only now.. after i say ok to error... i tunes continues for like 2 seconds.. then has to shut down... ****!!! can anyone help me with this... anyone?

just to update my problem... I finally figured out that i had to disable the "copy to my itunes folder from my library option. just so you know. apparently i tunes cant handle the large transfer to itunes and also at the same time copy it to your itunes folder... " Attempting to copy to the disk " ipod " failed. The disk could be read from or written to. "
I tried removing the files i just added but it didnt help. I tried restoring the ipod but it doesnt help. I know its not hardware problem. How do I find out what files are messing up my ipod.
It works fine with everyhting but music. Also it will start syncing then randomly give me this message, i got up to 500 songs (that play fine, but then it stops and gives me this bs. i hvae 3000 + more that wont sync. Can someone please help me before i smash this thing?

Eh, there could be an issue with one of the audio files it is trying to sync over. Best bet is to do a fresh restore on the iPod and then follow the steps in the following article to see if it addresses your issue. (and yes, I know it's not the exact error you're receiving, but try it)

  • HELP "Attempting to copy to the disk JODI'S IPOD failed. The disk could..."

I am receiving this message when attempting to synch. "Attempting to copy to the disk JODI'S IPOD failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." It appears that it synchs some of the songs but hangs up on certain songs. Once I determine the "corrupt" song, I deselect it in Itunes and try synching again. It will synch some more until it comes across another song it doesn't care for. I found 4 songs out of 130 that were problematic. This makes for a very painstaking process. Any help would be appreciated.

You're not the only one. I use a Mac, and I have come across this same problem. I wonder how it determines which ones it wants to sync and which ones it doesn't.

    help?

The quickest way to correct this error USUALLY is to restore your iPod. Make sure you have all your Music and stuff on your PC for a restore will wipe clean your iPod and then use iTunes to transfer everything back to the iPod off your PC. follow the link below on ways to correct this and links to info about "Restoring" your iPod

I get the error above when I am trying to transfer videos to my ipod that I have purchased from the Itunes music store. 4 of the videos I purchased worked and the other 4 would not transfer. I am not sure how to fix it. I have already restored my ipod once and that did not correct the problem.
Any suggestions on what I should do next?

  • All music gone from iTunes and when trying to put it back, "Attempting to copy to the disk Macintosh HD failed. The disk could not be read or written to."

    Hello,
I have a portable 500gb HD and I use it to put music and other stuff.
Earlier, out of the blue, all of my music from iTunes disappeared, and I tried to put it back by dragging my folder "music" from the external HD to iTunes, but the message "Attempting to copy to the disk Macintosh HD failed. The disk could not be read or written to." appears and nothing happens. Only 40 albums (the same ones every time) go into iTunes before the message appear.
I tried restarting the computer and nothing happened.

This sounds more like a hardware issue, possibly a failing drive if you had mysteriously vanishing files and there are problems writing to your drive..  You could get better support on a forum for your Mac model or at lest one for your operating system version.  Have you verified the disk with Disk Utility to see what it reports?

  • Attempting to copy to the disk failed. An unknown error occurrred (-51).

I apologize if this issue has been addressed before, but I’m pretty well at the end of my rope here. As mentioned in the title, the message is:
“Attempting to copy to the disk failed. An unknown error occurred (-51)”
I have tried resetting my 20G iPod, as well as re-downloading and running the iTunes and iPod installer. If I delete something off of my iPod, unplug it, and then plug it back in again, the song name is there again, but this time it has an exclamation point next to it and it won’t play the song. It plays the rest of the music fine through the computer and through my stereo (I was having some problems with it skipping to the next song in the middle of a song, but I reset it and haven’t had the problem since). I don’t want to have to restore the iPod for the simple fact that I didn’t take the time to backup all my music. That would be a pain. Also, something else I’ve noticed is that I can actually hear its hard drive now kicking in and out when it’s really quiet and plugged into the computer. I hope that I just never noticed that before.
Without having to restore, is there anything else that I haven’t tried? HELP!!

  • Attempting to copy to the disk 'IPOD NAME' failed. An unknown error occurre

Hi I keep getting an error when I sync my Ipod.
"Attempting to copy to the disk 'IPOD NAME' failed. An unknown error occurred (-69)."
I have a 20 GB click wheel Ipod. And nothing is working to fix it. Restoring, etc.

I don't know if you've found a fix for your problem or what exactly could be causing it, but I'm wrestling with the same issue myself.
Some say it's happens when your files are corrupted.

  • Help - Attempting to copy to the disk "J" failed. An unknown error occured

pls help I get the above error Attempting to copy to the disk "J" failed. An unknown error occured (-69) when I connect my ipod nano 8GB Gen 3 and try to synch. Ive got the latest Itunes software, Ive done the 5 r's, Ive tried a different USB cable. I can't think of anything else left to try, when I d/c on my computer it doesn't bring up my ipod but under device manager its there, says its working properly

This is the same thing that just happened to me. My error message reads as follows: "Attempting to copy to the disk "C's IP" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to". I've reset and restored. It still will not add the last 3 songs that I have purchased from Itunes. I have completely read the manual and can't find anything that deals with this problem. I have only had my ipod for 10 months. I hope someone can help with this.

    Hello there, Wyrzezbiator.
The following Knowledge Base article offers some great steps for the very issue you're describing:
Resolve specific iTunes update and restore errors

    Configure your security software
Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006, 9807, or 9844. Sometimes as a result of this issue, a device might stop responding during the restore process.
Check your security software and settings, which can block ports and prevent connection to Apple servers during update and restore.
