Attempting to Install Mountain Lion on Corrupted HDD, Keeps Going Back to OS X Utilities
My HDD got corrupted (still works, as it can be seen on the Disk Utility), so I'm attempting to reinstall Mountain Lion via a USB. I have the stick all set to go, following the instructions to the teeth on this websites,but, to my avail, whenever I attempt to boot from the USB I get taken back to OS X Utilities as part of the recovery thing.
That's completely normal. You have burnt the Mountain Lion installer onto a USB drive, so it's normal that you see the "OS X Utilities" window after starting from this USB drive.
As your hard disk is damaged, start from the USB drive and open Disk Utility. Then, choose "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar and repair the disk. If it can't be repaired, you can't reinstall Mountain Lion, so you need a new hard drive

You may have a folder named Backups.backupdb at the root level of your startup disk. You cannot find it with Spotlight. Just navigate to your startup disk (usually named "Macintosh HD") and drag Backups.backupdb to the Trash.
Is your startup disk partitioned? If so this may be applicable:

The current internal disk is 500gb, does anyone know whether I can upgrade my 21.5" iMac (circa Oct-2009 vintage) to a larger size internal disk, 1Tb or even 2Tb? I already have one external 2Tb drive and another one on order (I have masses of media stored and more planned as I've just taken up photography). Seems a bit of a pain managing with only 500gb internal storage. OR, can you advise me on how I can store all my photos on my new 2Tb external drive - I can't seem to figure out how to set the path for iPhoto to see them (I can't even figure out where they are stored right now!). Same with iTunes, how do I set the default storage to the external drive (I moved everything manually and then imported them all from the new drive - it worked but seemed very convoluted). Any advice on how to manage multiple drives gratefully received. And thanks again for previous replies.

Standard problem in ML.. apple do not seem to want to recognise.
Reboot the TC .. if that fails restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. router/TC... clients.. with 2min gap.
There are other suggestions like changing the password.. all they do is the same as reboot.

Here is another way to get a useful utility in ML.. rather than toyland version.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
2. Download and install unpkg.

Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool. -

Installing Mountain Lion on new HDD
Help! I just got a new HDD for my macbook pro 15 in mid 2009. Got a WD 750 GB 5400rpm. I'm trying to install mountain lion but it won't let me. I formated the new HDD and partitioned correctly. Can someone give me a solution to install Mountain Lion on my new HDD? I've tried LionDiskMaker, bootable usb drive, and nothings seems to work. I also tried to install Snow Leopard Intall DVD and the DVD that came with my laptop when they get spit out! Help! Thanks!

-Rebooted from Mountain Lion bootable USB
-Repeated the process.
-Try to install Mountain Lion
-Won't Install.

Read HERE and HERE from Western Digital's own forum regarding the Blue Editions on Macbooks.
In any event, I had my own issues with the Blue Edition in my late 08 Macbook.....Took hours of trying to make it work and no go. Went with Seagate instead.....
Try to see if you can get it up and running but don't waste hours if you can't get it to go......If you can replace it with the Scorpio Black or something else - then go for it......
Trying to save you a lot of fraustration.....Try it for a while and if it's still a no go - replace the drive.

Motion 5 crashes after installing Mountain lion OS
I installed Mountain Lion OS a couple of days back and Motion 5 is crashing with the following error message.
There was a problem connecting to the server “hn365Server”. The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
I don't have any problems with my internet connections and not sure what could be the problem. I'm in the middle of an urgent project and need to get motion up and running soon. Pls helpYour processor is alright however the specs on your machine are lackluster. It has a slow drive and not enough ram. Your first problem is that with that little ram the computer will use the drive for paging. Since the drive is 5400 (the slowest hard drives in the world) your going to be waiting.. a lot. Up your ram and upgrade to a 7200 rpm hard drive youll be happy. If you really want a gem system upgrade to 8gb ram and get a swift SSD drive.
Its a technology problem, not an OS problem. Newer OS's have extra features that capitalize on modern tech.. 5400rpm tech are like.. 90s tech... Cant believe they were selling those right up to 2011 or whenever.. criminal... -
Time machine question when installing Mountain Lion
I have a 2010 iMac running OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
I am preparing to install Mountain Lion, and can't find any instruction about what to do
with my Time Machine which is on an external hard drive.
Do I eject it before I install Mountain Lion and then just plug it back in afterwards?

Numbers does not open with the main user after installing mountain lion. It works flawlessly when I use the second account on my mac. What got corrupted in the admin-account, something in the user-library? How can I fix it? I´m kinda desperate... (the same happens with the other iWork-Apps!)
Looking forward to hearing from somebody with a littlemore expertise than me, Chrisyou can remove preferences files by navigating to the Preferences folder for your user as follows:
0) Quit ALL iWork apps (Keynote, Pages and Numbers)
1) from the Finder select the menu item "Go > Go To Folder…". This will bring up a dialog:
2) enter the path "~/Library/Preferences" (no double quotes)
3) find the files:
com.apple.iWork.Keynote.plist
com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
and move these to the trash. I would NOT empty until later.
4) restart Numbers -
I recently attempted to re-install Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro late 2012 model and the internet recovery is failing. I have absolutely no clue what to do here. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
- Currently if I boot it up there is a flashing folder icon with a question mark in it. I am assuming this means there is no OS because I wiped the SSD and tried to reinstall Mountain Lion
- When I hold Command+R, it prompts me to Choose Network... the problem with this is the wifi constantly is disconnecting. The Retina 2012 does not have an ethernet port so i have considered buying the attachment then returning when done.

Best.There is nothing to do if you don't have a reliable Internet connection unless you have a copy of the Mountain Lion installer application from when you first installed it.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
How do I use Disk Utility to help install Mountain Lion after many failed attempts?
I tried to install Mountain Lion from an App onto my MacBook.
First it said that my disk was damaged to i tried to repair it.
Didn't work.
Then it said I didn't have enough room to install Mountain Lion.
Then I tried to restore Lion.
Didn't work.
Then someone suggested I reset my PRAM.
Tried that, and now I am stuck.
I can't restore any of my backups from timeline.
I can't reinstall OSX because my drive is now locked.
And I don't know how to use Disk Utility to solve this problem!
Any suggestions welcome... I'm in way deeper than I understand and feel like anything I do is making this worse!I gather that your computer is in a less than satisfactory state, so the process below will basically start you from scratch, but you shouldn't lose anything.
Okay, can you inspect the Time Machine Backups with the Finder? About two or so folders down you should start seeing your system files. Assuming all your files are present.
Important^
You probably have an installation disk that came with your macBook. Boot from that CD and install from the CD.
Run the verify disk utilites and repair utilities if necessary.
You may want to erase your disk from the CD's disk utility. This will erase your Hard Drive (make sure you do not erase your backups, as that would be very bad).
Once the installation is complete, run all system updates. Either look through your backup and find the Mountain lion installation app, or download it from the app store again.
Run the ML installtion app.
Once everything is up and running, move all files and folders you want from your TM backups and you should be good to go. -

1) Make a boot clone first!!!

(Otherwise the installer will write-lock the disk preventing repair.)
Mountain Lion Aborted Installation—Claimed Hard Disk Failed, Couldn't be Repaired, and Should be Replaced
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro. Installation of Mountain Lion aborted claiming the hard disk could not be repaired by Disk Utility, should be backed up immediately, and replaced. It didn't make sense that the drive was booting up the computer for installation, but needed replacing. I removed the drive, put it in an external enclosure, and backed up the drive using a working Mac Mini, and Carbon Copy Cloner.
Hard Disk Was Write-Locked—Not Failing
Booting in Single User mode (hold command and S keys down while bootup is proceeding). I then typed in the fsck command given after Single User bootup. It informed me the drive was write-locked and read only. Now things were starting to make sense. Disk Utility couldn't repair the drive because it was write-locked! Maybe it could have been unlocked by the "chflags nouchg /Volumes/volume" or "chflags noschg /Volumes/volume" commands (http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20031017061722471), but I didn't try it. Unlocking the drive is really worht a try because it could save hours of coppying through a slow USB interface.
I formatted my laptop drive after copying it to another large external drive. Then I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone Snow Leopard from my Mac Mini to my freshly formatted original laptop drive. I unsellected the "Users" folder so I would only get the operating system—saving lots of hours copying data I don't need. Then I put the drive back in my laptop, and it booted with Snow Leopard. Checked the volume with Disk Utility and was informed the drive is fine. I removed the drive and connected it externally to my Mac Mini and ran fsck_hsf a few times in the terminal, which showed problems were found and fixed.
sudo fsck_hfs -fy /dev/rdisk1s2

More Trouble Migraiting My Applications and Directory
I expect to use up more time changing my computer name, migrating applications and rsyncing my User Directory. I will post how I achieve this.
I Hope People Avoid Trouble and Problems are Solved
I hope everyone will avoid trouble by making boot clone of their whole disk before attempting an install of ML and repairing their disk with Disk Utility and fsck before ML installer prevents it with a write-lock. Please see the first section.
I hope this solves other peoples problems with 'unreparable' disks. I believe this proves disks are repairable when ML says otherwise.

I recommend you copy your drive as soon as possible. I really don't think the drive is bad, but you may have to format it and copy back to it. Hopefully not. Clone or backup the drive before trying this recipe. Any time you have errors on a drive, back it up. A failing drive has lmited life. However, I don't think these drives are really failing, but that is my opinion and I break a lot of things.
Let's try this recepie for you:
Start in Single User Mode. Power on while holding the Command + S keys.
At the prompt, type "fsck_hfs -fy" or "fsck -fy" and hit return.
Do it again.
Enter the command "reboot".

Installed Mountain Lion, Won't Complete Boot
I downloaded and installed mountain lion yesterday and after the reboot from the install, it just goes through the first apple logo with the spinning icon, then the apple without the spinning icon, then shuts off and reboots. I'm posting this from safe mode on my mid-2011 MB Pro 13 inch. Everything in safe mode is extremely laggy(graphics-wise). Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any advice on how to get my computer back up and running?

I have read lots of threads with regard to this issue so i am really hoping that apple can sort this out because it worked ok before installing os x mountain lion. I was actually thinking of getting a macbook air but to be honest the whole os x mountain lion issue has left a very very bad taste in my mouth and thinking of totally binning everything apple that i have because i can't see apple fixing this issue....................................... -
I am having to many crashes on my Mountain Lion (upgraded from Snow Leopard) and want to reinstall Mountain Lion and see if this doesn't work. My Mac crashed about once or twice a week and most recently this caused my Outlook for Mac to be corrupted. Tied to rebuild DB but it is not working.

How to install Mountain Lion on my macbook pro MB990LL/A 2009?
Hi,
I have a big problem here.. I saw on internet that many people have installed on they're macbook pro MB990LL/A an OS like Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion. This weekend, I've tried to install Snow Leopard, and when I've inserted the disc in my macbook, it said that the operating system was not supported by my computer.
I don't kow how to do, but I would like to install Mountain Lion or at least Snow leopard on it and I know that it's possible so if someone can help me with this, that would be great!!
Right now, i'm on leopard 10.5.8Confirm that you booted from the Snow Leopard Install DVD and that it is the retail version that you purchased directly from Apple.
If that does not work:
Boot your MacBook Pro normally, then download and install the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo update. Then, shut down and attempt to install Snow Leopard again.
