Attempting to move iPhoto to external HD.

I get an error stating 'file already exists with that name'  Threre are no other files on the HD?  Help!

Yes, my EHD is formatted for MacOS Extended.
The triggering of the message is after I have pasted the folder into the EHD and the copy process begins.  About 56 MB into the process the message appears that states the folder already exists.  The foldedr that exists is the iPhoto Library folder.
Same issue when I created the folder on the EHD.
I ended up making an appointment with the local Genius Bar.  The encountered the same issue, so the fix was to copy only the Original and the Modified folders.  That seemed to work fine.  The only issue was I think we should have also copied the Recovered file.  There was a lot of discussion around the definition the the Recovered file and what actually is deposited within.  Original and Modified make perfect sense and are self-explanatory. Recovered is not intuitive, at least I have back-ups (just in case I need one).
Thanks for your input.

  • Attempting to move iTunes to external HD...

    Hi,
I just watched several videos on youtube detailing how to move my library to an external HD. I dragged my entire library (80+ GBs) to the external HD. Worked. However, the next step was to 'choose library' and the library files are faded and unclickable. Stupidly, I chose the 'create library' feature out of frustration so now I have a blank iTunes. My music is safe both on my macbook's HD and external HD so I didn't delete content. What do I do? I've attached a screenshot of how my itunes folder in the external HD looks like... iTunes 10.5.2

If your movie files are all in the same folder, you can click on one of the missing files in itunes,
then locate, then select the external drive's folder,  locate your file and select it.
Itunes will then ask if you want to use this folder to locate other missing file.
Another method that I would suggest.
Recreate the video library (Music stays intact)
In iTunes, select movies (under Library Column),
then select all the video files (Command-A), then delete them all.
Then in iTunes, click on File & Add to Library,  select the folder
on the external drive and your files will be reimported.
Most of your tags will be preserved.
If you are uncertain of this method, do this.
Delete one movie and reimport it from the new folder.
How does it look....  If you are happy, then use this method.

  • Cannot move iPhoto between external drives ?

    Hi,
I have been having problems getting my WD 500 GB to mount to desktop. I have bought a new WD 2 TB drive. Recently the 500GB drive did mount and I can see my iPhoto library. I have tried to drag and drop to the 2TB drive and also copy and paste but after copying 198 GB of 252 GB library I get an error message as folllows :
If you cant see image it reads ' You cannot copy "iphoto library" to the destination because its name is the same as the name of an item on the destination , except for soem characters"'
I have tried this numerous times but do not want to reboot and loose the 500GB disc again. Also I was able to drag and drop a copy of another file to teh 2TB disc and I have currently opened iPhoto and I am copying the 'originals' folder to the 2TB drive. Will see soon if that works.
Any help appreciated as I need to secure my library and get it off teh 500GB drive.
    Regards

    Mac OSX 10.5.....

If the copy fills the drive so you have less than about 3-5 GB available I'd forego that because it could severely cripple an already struggling hard drive.
What you might try is to create a folder on the EHD and name it iPhoto Library 2.  Then open your library on the boot drive with the finder like this:
and then start dragging the various components (files and folders) over to the other library.  This may get your library copied to the EHD or let you narrow it down to the file that's causing the problem.
If you are able to copy all of the contents to the folder on the EHD it should convert to an iPhoto library when you launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select it to open.

So, I have just about had it. For nine days now,  I have valiantly tried to move my library to an external drive. At first, I attempted to move it to my 2TB Time capsule. iTunes didn't like its new home though and moved home without telling me. So then there were two libraries. I meshed them back together reluctantly and iTunes in a silent revolt, absolutely refused to use its own 'Keep Library Organized' criteria and may as well have thrown my music against the wall. Seriously, my 5 year old nephew has his computer files better managed. Then I bought a 3TB Time Capsule and you may ask yourself why??? Well, iTunes doubled in size- although when I ran apps that are designed to find duplicate iTunes files, it deleted the music I actually bought from iTunes. So then I watched as iTunes got it back. How you ask; I run a MacBook Air, iMac and Mac mini in my house - as soon as one powered up it hit the net like a sailor on leave and re-downloaded it all without abandon. I tried to keep the libraries separate, no success there. I tried to keep them unified; iTunes response was to ask me if I wanted to join iTunes Match every time I logged on to my computer and on any computer - my iTunes match song number has been as high as 24,367 and as low as 11,112. And I can't simply refuse iTunes. No one refuses iTunes. Refusal to allow iTunes Match to run through all 24000 songs again was to revoke my rights to the songs that were once part of my library. If I took a long time to decide or was visibly impatient while iTunes did its little 3 hour scan it would arbitrarily decide that music I bought from iTunes was ineligible for iTunes Match. How could that possibly be??? I am missing music, or at least iTunes tells me so by showing me that lovely exclamation point. I have tried backing up my computer to do a full system restore and start all over. Time Capsule claims I have 979 GB of data and takes its sweet time to even back up one gig (about 18 minutes) even though I can transfer files to my Time Capsule at about 1 GB every 40 seconds. I guess though performing back-ups are somewhat like government jobs; it will get done, when it gets done. The back up requirement of 979 GB is surprising though, my Mac claims that I currently occupy just about 25% of my 2TB drive. The discrepancy, who knows, but I think the solution lies somewhere in iTunes. But maybe iPhoto. But that is for another time.

After admittedly only a quick read the one thing you don't say is how you are trying to make this move.  Most people with moving library issues do it the wrong way.  Plenty of web sites tell you how to do it the wrong way.
If the iTunes application is started before the drive with the library is fully mounted and awake iTunes will revert back to the internal drive.

  • How do I move iPhoto pics to external HD to free up hard drive space, then how to back up external HD

I currently have 2 iPhoto Libraries on my 2010 MacBook Pro.  Photo count is in tens of thousands, and hard drive needs them to go away so it can work faster.  Nervous about moving photos to external HD.  I currently back up entire computer to 1 external HD via Time Machine.  Just purchased another bigger external HD for purpose of moving iPhoto libraries to it.
However, Genius Bar told me to drag and drop folders to folders I create on new HD and NOT move iPhoto Library file itself because those were only "copies" of the images.  If I want to keep the real images, I should move folder by folder and group by year.
I'm just totally confused.  I still want to be able to use iPhoto to organize and edit my photos.  I THINK I can do that by moving the entire iPhoto library folder from my Pictures folder to the external and then launching iPhoto by holding down Option key.  But, how do I back up the back up?

Genius bar is not very genius in this case.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Backing Up.
Remember a back up is a copy on another disk (at least). So, you'll need one disk to hold your Library and another to back that up to. You can use Time Machine if you want to. Chronosync or SuperDuper are also excellent alternatives.

  • If I Move iPhoto Library to External Drive Does It Keep Organized?

    Can anyone tell me:
In iPhoto 09 8.2.1 if I take the time to organize, edit, "faces" "events" etc...and I move iPhoto to an External Harddrive, a Western Digital "My Book"...Does moved library stay edited, organized face tagged, etc?
    Thanks

See this document how to format a drive for photo libraries: (it explains it for aperture, but it is done the same way for iPhoto)
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
Also if I do format the drive how will that effect what is already on there (not just photos but documents, etc)?
I thought you were buying a new drive to use with iPhoto.   If there are already documents on the drive, you need to copy them temporarily somewhere else. Reformatting will erase a drive completely.
Disk Utility (it is in the "Utilities" folder in "Applications")  will show you, if your drive needs formatting.
The left pane shows your disks and disk partitions, and the right pane lets you do useful things, like reformatting and repairing your drive.
If you select the drive in the left panel, you see the formatting in the footer of the panel.
    Is your drive correctly formatted?

  • How can I save the images and movies on a  external Disk from iphoto program, to protect the images when problems occur in the laptop,

How can I save the images and movies on a  external Disk from iphoto program, to protect the images when problems occur in the laptop,

    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
If you want to back up the Photos only:
Export them using the File -> Export command.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.

  • How do you move iPhoto to an external hard drive?

I want to move iPhoto and possibly iTunes to an external hard drive to free up space on my MacBook Pro. How do you do this?

Copy /Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library to your external drive. Delete the one on your internal drive. Now create an alias to the iPhoto Library's new location and put the alias in the original location. Be sure the alias is named "iPhoto Library".

  • How do I move Iphoto from macbook to external drive

Can I move Iphoto from my Macbook to an external drive?

    Greetings,
If by "move iPhoto" you mean move your library of images, yes you can.
Go to Your User (little house) > Pictures > iPhoto Library.
Drag the library to your external drive.
-- NOTE: Before you move your iPhoto Library to your external drive make sure:
Its not being used for TimeMachine
    The drive is Mac formated.
    Cheers.

  • HT4946 cannot find itunes backup on my PC (win xp). want to move over to external hard drive to restore from backup bc PC not enough space

i just restored my ipad2 to iOS 6.1.3 yesterday. i have been trying to restore from backup, but i keep getting error messages from itunes (running latest version of itunes) that says there is not enough space to save the backup on the computer. i have tried clearing up as much space on my PC (windows xp), but there is still not enough room. and ive tried disk cleanup on my computer and resetting the ipad and running it through recovery mode (as some articles sugggested it would help with restoring after failed attempts). i read on another question in the apple support discussions that someone just moved his whole backup folder into his external harddrive and then he was able to restore from backup.
the backup is definitely saved on my computer (itunes confirms that), and the backup folder is supposed to be here  \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\, but im still not finding it with that file path. i get as far as "username" and then i dont see "application data" and so on. but when i try searching that file path in google chrome, i find it and i see it, but its strange that i cant find it in the "docs and settings" folder in my C drive.
please help! i just want to be able to move the backup folder to my external to restore from backup. thank you in advance!!

Thank you! I was able to find it. Im sorry, i have a few follow up questions. Does the iTunes have to be running from my external as well to do the restore from backup? And if so, how do I move iTunes to external and run it from there? Also, I just copied over the "backup" folder (last part of that file path to my external, is that enough, or did I have to copy it starting from the beginning (docs and settings and so forth)? Lastly, when I select restore from backup in iTunes, would it automatically know that it's the copy on my external to restore backup from? Or do I have to delete or do something with the original file path in my computer?
    Thank you!

  • How do I move iPhoto albums off of my computer?

I have made some albums in iPhoto that I want to move to an external hard drive. Just the albums, not the whole LIBRARY. However, I cant drag them or do anything with them. I tried copying and pasting the pictures into a new folder on my hard drive. It works, but doesnt keep them in order. PLEASE HELP!

The Finder's default sorting option is alphanumerical and that's why you're not getting the same order as you had in iPhoto.   If you want to have the photos in that specific order outside of iPhoto you will have to sequentially rename the photos inside iPhoto via Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to Text with a sequential number added at the end of the file name:
and then export them to a folder outside of iPhoto with the titles as the new file names.

  • Disk full attempting to move files from PC to Mac

I've just bought a brand new Macbook Air. I'm attempting to move photos, music and some documents from my old acer onto the macbook. However when i've tried to do this, i've found that the disk is full. This disk is the macinstosh HD disk, though there is another disk shown aswell.
Any help on how I can transfer the rest of my stuff on would be great as I know there should be enough space on this machine to hold the smallish amount of stuff i'm putting onto it.
    Thanks

I'm not moving everything from the acer but i reckon theres about 50 GB of stuff.
Well the MBA came with 500GB of storage, of which i've used next to none.
Although when I look in disk utility, I can see what appear to be two disks. One is called APPLE SSD SD0128F Media and the other is Macintosh HD. Combined they only have 240 GB of storage. Completely baffled about how to view where things are stored, as i'd normally just go to "my computer"
I'm using an external HDD to move the data.
    Thanks

  • Finder freezes when trying to move files to external hard drive

Whenever I try to move files from internal hard drive to my external finder freezes it. I have over 5 TBs of free space on my external, so I know it's not a space issue. This happens no matter the size of the file. It starts the copy and then will freeze before it finishes. If I try to force quit and select relaunch it acts like it is relaunching but my icons never re-appear and the command bar at the top never returns. So I end up having to hard boot.
I just reinstalled the 10.5.8 combo update and verified both hard disks, if any repairs came up I repaired and then did the same with disk permissions....it's still freezing on me. I am frustrated because there are some files I'd really like to move to my external raid hard drive but I'm not able to.
The freezing happens if I'm trying to transfer files from a disc or an additional external HD. My internal HD is only so big and the external Raid drive is for my capture scratch on Final Cut Pro and I'm even having issues capturing to that drive. Everything wants to be on my internal HD and that doesn't work for me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sean Dale1 wrote:
Do you get any error messages and if so what are they? Do you have any problems copying files off the problem drive back to your Mac or do the freezes only occur when copying to the external?
No I don't get any error messages, the finder just freezes and when I try to relaunch finder it doesn't relaunch properly..all icons are missing and I'm not able to access the the task bar to properly shut down so I have to hard boot.
It happens only when trying to save files to the external, whether through drag and drop or within programs. I am able to access files on the external and copy files from there to my internal without problems.
Have you tried attaching this drive to another Mac and if so do you get the same issues?
I don't have another Mac to attach the drive to.
How is this RAID attached, SCSI, FireWire, SATA or what? How was the RAID created, Disk Utility or third party software and have you verified the integrity of the RAID?
The RAID is attached via SCSI. In an attempt to solve this finder issue I re-installed the drivers to the most current drivers available and in doing so updated any firmware....and there was no change. I was not the one who set up the RAID so I don't know how it was created. It's an Enhance UltraStore R16 and I've been using it without issues since January 2007 and this freezing thing has been intermittent for a few months now but now it's constant and annoying. I've verified the disk through disk utility but I don't have any software to check the integrity otherwise. Do you have any recommendations as to what software I could use to do this?
