Attempting to open a doc

Attempting to open a document but it only shows the first page and won't scroll down to the other pages. The docs are opened via a university proxy(the blackboard network). I am thinking it has to be a plug in or missing app problem but I have no ides what. Its weird that it shows the first page and a third but will not scroll down. Help!

If the documents and text are in a frame in the browser, try the two finger scroll to get to the second and third pages of the document. Just use a light touch when you scroll. That may work for you.

  • Computer thinks AW text docs are presentations.  Can't open WP docs.

I just updated to Snow Leopard. No good deed goes unpunished. Now I can't open any Apple WP documents. The system thinks they are presentations. Specifically, message says. e.g. "[doc name].cwk not a presentation." I need to open these documents. I haven't yet tried AW database or spreadsheet docs. Thanks for any help.

Looks like you have iWork installed, and your Mac is attempting to open the file using Keynote.
If you do have AppleWorks installed as well, right-click on one of the files and choose Get Info. In the Get Info window, go to Open With... and choose AppleWorks from the pop-up menu. Click Change All.
Close the Info window and double click the file's icon.
If you have not installed Rosetta, OS X will prompt you to do so. You will need your Snow Leopard disk to do this. Insert, then follow the prompts.
If you do NOT have AppleWorks installed, you have a number of choices to make depending on which type of document you need to open, and what software you already have installed.
AppleWorks WP, SS and PR documents can be opened with Pages, Numbers and Keynote respectively.
For AppleWorks DR and PT documents, you will need third party software, such as EazyDraw.
AppleWorks DB documents can be opened only by AppleWorks.
For DB documents you will have to install AppleWorks (and Rosetta) as recommended in a previous post,
For DR and PT documents, you will need to install AppleWorks (and Rosetta), or a third party application.
If you do NOT install Appleworks, and do have iWork installed, choose a file (with the .cwk extension), Get info, and set it to open with Pages, Numbers or Kewynote, depending which type of file you are most likely to be opening (WP, SS or PR), then click Change All.
You will then be able to open your most common type of AW file by double clicking. Other types will continue to give the "This is not a XXXX file" message, but can be openied by right clicking on the file and choosing Open with... then choosing the appropriate iWork application.

Are you saying your System.out.println statements didn't print anything?
Those examples I gave were not intended to open the file. They're debugging tools to help you determine the JVM's notion of current directory.
You do realize that when you say "abc.doc", without specifying a full path, that whatever path you do provide, whether a partial path or just a file name, is relative to some notion of "current directory," don't you?

  • Unable to Open Word Docs Unless the Word Application is Open

    Hello All,
I recently switched from PC to Mac. I installed Office and when I attempt to open a Word Document I get the following message, "The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code 10660)"
I am able to open any Word document when Word is open.
Is this normal? On the PC all I needed to do was open a Word Doc and the Application opened automatically.
    Thanks,

Select a Word document in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, select Word under Open With, click on Change All, and confirm your action.

  • InDesign CS5 - Crash upon Opening CS2 docs

I've just upgraded to Windows 7 OS, and have installed the Adobe CS5 creative suite.  (Upgraded from CS2)

Anyone else having this problem?  I've tried opening the doc with two different PCs (both running CS5), but the same thing happens.

    Corinne,
I used to work for Adobe in Seattle, so had some pretty good contacts on the InDesign team and sent them a message on Facebook.  Most of their suggestions were/are what have already been covered here in this thread.  So what I finally did was open up a Tech Support call.  I'm too lazy to re-install CS4 on my machine to try and get my files to work.  On the tech support call, the technician opened up an Adobe Connect Session so he could see my desktop and see what was happening.  I tried opening one of the CS4 files that was broken and got the dreaded "InDesign CS5 has Stopped Working" with the only option being to close the program.
After that, the tech asked me to upload the file so he could work on it on his end.
When he tried to open it, he got the same thing and his determination was that something (likely a font or some 3rd party plug-in) was corrupted.
Here's what he did and how he fixed it:
Open file in CS5 - CRASH
Open file in CS4 - Works
Try to export file as .idml file in CS4 - CRASH
Try to change formatting, etc in CS4 - CRASH
At this point since I'm not running any 3rd Party plug-ins, he determined that it was a corrupted font (Pristina) that was causing the issue.
He copied all the elements over to a new ID CS5 file without any formatting using Times New Roman as the only font in the file
Resave and upload back to me
The new file opens just fine in CS5
SO if you're having a similar issue, you may want to open the file in CS2 and try copying sections of the document into a new document and saving that out.  The tech said that they always use Times New Roman as the font to test with . . .
This is not the most elegant solution, but it DOES keep all your information and while my documents were all less than 25 pages, I was happy to just reformat without having to go back and recreate them from scratch.  He said that for some reason CS4 was not seeing the corruption, but CS5 caught it immediately upon opening.  I'm hoping the ID team is listening to this and figures out a solution for opening corrupted files.  I've emailed my contacts there and told them I'd be happy to give them files to test with.  No reply as of yet.
If you're interested, call Tech Support, the guys on the other end are fabulous!!!  I even called back two days later with another file that was doing the same thing and happened to get the same tech.  He knew exactly what to do and in less than 30 minutes was back up and running!
    Hope this helps!

  • "Error 7 occurred at Invoke Node..." when attempting to open .vi for editing

I am attempting to open a vi for editing, and instead the vi is attempting to execute.  I get the error:
"Error 7 occurred at Invoke Node in BuildTargetBuildSpecification.vi->BuildXFS.vi"
Possible reason(s):   LabVIEW:  File not found. The file might have been moved or deleted, or the file path might be incorrectly formatted for the operating system. For example, use \ as path separators on Windows, : on Mac OS, and / on Linux. Verify that the path is correct using the command prompt or file explorer.
    Method Name: Project: Open
When I close the Error Message dialog, Labview terminates.

    Hi R.Jay,
Error 7 generally occurs when trying to create an executable when there is an extra instance of a top-level vi.  You may need to remove the file as a support file (but leave it as the top level vi).
Are you trying to run an executable that has already been created?  Unless you have already built an executable, it should not automatically run when opened.  Also, was it built in a previous version of LabVIEW?  Sometimes this error can be seen when you upgrade to a newer version without compiling.

  • When I attempt to open a PDF file I saved from a website, I get the message "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." Is there any way to correct this problem?

When I attempt to open a PDF file I saved from a website using Safari, I get the message "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." When I save the same PDF file using FireFox it opens up immediately. Is there any way to correct this problem with Safari?

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Adobe Bridge CS3 is crashing everytime it attempts to open.

I am running a MacBook Pro with 10.9.4.  Today when I attempted to open Bridge CS3, it crashed. No error. Just crash. Repeatedly.  I have deleted all Adobe and reinstalled, but Bridge continues to crash. I have used the "shift/option" menu to reset prefs, etc, and it still crashes. I downloaded a supposed patch for Bridge & installed it even though my APP store didn't want me to, and Bridge continues to crash.
I'm a photographer and depend on Bridge as my photo browser.
Any other ideas for me to try?

Well, I don't know what just happened to the gremlins, but get this:
On a whim, I held down only the shift key while attempting once again to open Bridge. And it OPENED without crashing.
I was afraid to let up on the key...but I did and Bridge did not crash. I browsed a couple of photo folders, closed Bridge....reopened it WITHOUT the shift key & it opened. I've now tried that several times and it's not crashing. And while I'm glad it's working, I'm not holding my breath that it will continue to work.  WEIRD.
I'm going to re-start the macbook pro and see what happens.

  • When I attempt to open firefox an error message appears telling me that firefox is already running, but I can't find it running. How do I do so or in any case close the already running Firefox process?

When I attempt to open Firefox instead of Firefox opening, an error message appears saying "Firefox is already running but isn't responding. To open another window please close the existing Firefox process or restart the system.", but I can't find that process of Firefox in order to kill it, and after restarting the system there is still the problem. I have found an emergency fix to at least get online, and that is to use"Firefox_Profile_Manager" in the start menu's "run" start menu, but the
Firefox that then opens is that one doesn't carry over what I had in my bookmarks but starts bookmarks anew.

Sounds like it is hanging when you exit and later try to restart Firefox.

  • Numbers freezes when I attempt to open a file from the iCloud

    Hello,
My Numbers app for my iMac freezes when I attempt to open a spreadsheet file from the iCloud.  These same files open fine on my iPad, and I make sure to close Numbers on my iPad before I attempt to open the file on my iMac, but it makes no difference.  The app freezes, and I have to manually force stop the Numbers process.  Any help would be appreciated.

How do I get the dock to recognize the latest numbers version I have.
Go to the Applications folder, find Numbers 3 and drag it to the dock. It will then look like the lower icon here (the one with the 4 columns).
Another way is, if Numbers 3 is already open, to right-click the icon in the Dock and choose 'Keep in Dock' under 'Options':
You can drag the icon with the three columns off the Dock if you don't want to open Numbers 2 from the Dock.

How can I access files from a flash drive that were previously saved using a Windows computer? When I attempt to open the file on MacBook Pro, it is asking to "convert file to"; none of the options I choose work. I also have Microsoft Office (with Word) installed on the Mac as well.

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

All Office applications will also try to open a temporary work file in the same location as the source file. This implies the source file directory also needs to be writable for this temporary file. Since the default HFS+ driver provides only read-only access, such temporary files will fail to open, and will cause the application to fail.
As a test copy the file you want to edit, say an Excel spreadsheet from the OSX file system to the C: drive on the Windows side and try to open it. If you look in this directory, you should see two files, the source and a temporary file. You may have to force the temporary file to be opened on a read-write file system, by manipulating the folder for temporary files.

  • If Firefox is set as the default browser, and any application attempts to open a new window, this fails and I get the error "Firefox is already running..."

Here is what I am running:
Microsoft Windows 7, Service Pack 1, Fully updated to 4/10/2012
Fresh Install of Firefox 11. No add-ons enabled as a result of troubleshooting.
I am a user with administrator rights
    UAS is disabled.
To begin, this has been going on Since Firefox 10 or so. A few months now.
I am able to open Firefox. My add-ons worked (ABP, Flashblock, ABP Element Hiding Helper, IETAB2, Downthemall, Greasemonkey, 4chan extension) had no problems. Firefox is set and has been set for the last two years as my default web browser.
However Since approximately Firefox 10 or so, maybe before that, If I have a Firefox session open, and any other application attempts to open a session in a new window, I get the Firefox is already running, but not responding error."
I attempted to follow troubleshooting advice already posted (look for parent.lock files left behind [none present], multiple sessionstore.js files [none present], create a new user profile, attempted to clear out the "read-only" permission in windows 7, however as soon as it is cleared, the read only permission returns.)
As a last resort, I deleted the Firefox folder, the %APPDATA%/Mozilla directory in its entirety, then utilized CCleaner to remove any and all references to Firefox in the windows registry, then did a full re-install, no extensions installed right now.
I checked preferences and have the option "open new windows in a new tab" checked off. The problem persists regardless if this option is checked on or off. This problem persists in or out of safe mode, even with the brand new install.
    Test Cases:
    All cases:
Firefox is selected as the default browser for windows 7
Case 1: Open a firefox session. Utilize any other program that attempts to open a link to their website in a new browser window or new browser session. Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 2: Open a firefox session. Right click on Firefox on the task bar. Select "open in new window". Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 3: Open a firefox session. Select the Firefox Menu > New tab > New Window. A new window will actually open.
This is the only method of opening a new window in the same browser session or profile that actually works on my system. Attempting to open a browser session from the task bar "open new window dialog" or opening a new window while a current window/session is running will not open firefox in a new window or a new tab in the current session. The "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" error will occur every time.

Cor-el's suggestion resolved my problem. Apparently the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable was set to 1 on my system variables. I never made it, and really have no idea how it got there, but deleting this variable and restarting firefox has resolved the issue. Thanks Cor-el!
    Marking case: Solved
Solution: Verify the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable is NOT set to 1. This can be achieved by simply deleting this variable.
