Attendance worksheet that allows for grading

Hi,
I'm a HS teacher, and I'd like to set up an attendance worksheet that would allow me to keep tabs on students' classroom participation--for instance, something that I could mark each kid A or 0 (Absent), and then (assuming they are present) either a 1, 2, or 3 for their degree of participation in the class.  The idea would be that at the end, I could tally each kid's score and come up with a good idea of how to grade them on the "class participation" portion of their overall grade.  So, for instance, if there were 20 days of class in a particular block of lessons, someone who got a "3" each day would have the maximum score of 60, whereas someone who got a 2 each day would have only a 40.
Ideally, there might even be another table that converted that fraction (16/20) into a percentage rate, since usually the number of days in a given block is not as nicely "round-able" as 20.
I've looked at Roger's attendance worksheet (referenced in some other links on this discussion board), but that seems to be set up as a simpler "present/absent" binary option.
I should say, finally, that I'm an English/History teacher and decidedly not a "technie," so if you can put any response in relatively simple language, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

HI Kristin,
I read your question earlier, and started to work on a table to answer it, but got interrupted by dinner and some chores.
While you've answered your own question, I think this might be of interest.
The paired rows are identical, with the exception of number of absences. There are two calculation of the percent score for each student, and two calculations of the average score (in the range 0 to 3). Explanations below.
Adam is the 'perfect' student—always there, and always engaged in the class. In the first eight days, he's scored 3 every day. His score is three out of three, or 100%, no matter how you calculate it.
Bobbi is just as perfect, but missed one class (due to a medical appointment, as it turns out). A straightforward calculation of her points shows 21 for the first eight days, 88% of what she could have earned if she'd been in class on all eight days (as shown in column AD). 'But,' she might say, I couldn't be here that day for a good reason. I shouldn't be penalized for that. Column AE considers only the days where the student is present (ie. where the score is greater than the zero assigned for 'Absent,' and Bobbi was 100% on those days.
Calvin and Dave are pretty good students—average one day, superior the next. Dave was away a couple of days. Including those days in his calculations drops his percent score from 83 to 63, ignoring them keeps his percentage at 83, the same as Calvin's.
Gerri and Henry's rows introduce a new category—an excused absence, like the one due to Bobbi's medical appointment. In terms of 'bums in the seats', both have the same attendance (and both participate equally well on the days both are there). On the days they were absent, Gerri was playing hookey so she could go shopping; Henry was playing hockey with the school team, and permission to be absent had been asked for and granted before the team left for the tournament. Using a text code (e) for the excused absence, and a numerical one (0) for the unexcused makes the formula in AD ignore the excused absences, but include the unexcused ones in its calculations.
The final pair shows the case of a pair of students who entered the class several days after the rest. The days before they arrived, marked with text entries ( - ) are ignored by the formulas.
The last two columns do similar caculations to those in AD and AE, but show the results as a decimal value out of 3.
Any of the four formulas in these columns will provide you with a readable and useable result; the choice of wich to use is up to you as the teacher, and the choice depends on how you and your school want to treat absences in terms of their affecting calculated grades.
Formulas for each column are listed below.
AA2: =COUNTIF(B2:Z2,0)
Note that this counts only the absences marked with a zero. (see row 9, Henry)
To count excused absences, marked with "e", you'll need this version, placed in a different column:
Aa2: =COUNTIF(B11:Z11,"e")
For a single count including both types of absence, you could use this (see row11,  John):
AA2: =COUNTIF(B11:Z11,0)+COUNTIF(B11:Z11,"e")
AB2: =COUNTIF(B2:Z2,">0")
This counts the number of days the student was present (marked with 1, 2, or 3).
AC2: =SUM(B2:Z2)
Sums the number of points earned to date.
AD2: =SUM(B2:Z2)/(3*COUNT(B2:Z2))
AE2: =SUM(B2:Z2)/(3*COUNTIF(B2:Z2,">0"))
Calculates the fraction points earned/points available, as described for the various cases above. Cells are formatted to display this value as a percentage.
AF2: =AVERAGE(B2:Z2)
AG2: =AVERAGEIF(B2:Z2,">0")
Calculates the average points per day, using 'all days' or 'days attended' as above.
Interesting exercise. Took me back to working out a similar sheet in AppleWorks (or more likely, ClarisWorks) for my own classroom several years ago.
Regards,
Barry

  • Looking for an iPad(iPad/Mac) app that allows for playlists to migrate to iPad

I am specifially and exclusively looking for recommendations for an iPad(iPad/Mac) app that allows for my playlists to be migrated to iPad intact and playable.
iTunes -> Podcast/Music/Videos does not support mixed (music/video/podcast) playlits or video playlist at all. The app(s) should be able to easily create these playlist on the Mac (and manage content) much like iTunes (10).
On the phone with tech support today and they agree this is missing functionality from Apple. They suggested I reach out on to other users that may have a thrid party solution.

Requires each device/user have an unique Apple ID(verifiable email address):
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-friends/id466122094?mt=8
Otherwise you can use Find My Phone, but requires logging in for each separate user. Find My Friends(built by Apple) will show everyone's location on one device.

  • Wiki or Other Software that Allows for Collaborative review of PDFs

Here is what I am trying to do. I have hundreds of thousands of pages in PDF format that I am in the process of OCRing and creating a full text index. Given the volume of documents, I am going to have a large team going through these documents and adding comments (either on the documents themselves, or on an associated page).
Does anyone out there know of any good programs for this task?

My understanding of capture is that it takes the file from the scanner. I only have the PDFs, not the originals. Further, given that the OCRing is basically already done, what I need now is a good program for collaborative review and commenting on these documents. Given the volume of comments, the lack of margin space, and the fact that many of the commenters do not have anything more than Acrobat reader, I think a web program that allows for a traditional wiki experience, linked to the PDFs would be ideal.

Have you tried resetting your iPad? You will not lose any data. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

I'm pretty sure you should keep Boot Camp 2.1, Scorpio.
I'm not sure about the driver only or complete reinstall question though.
Probably the best place for an answer to this would be over in the BootCamp "Installation and Storage" forum at http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237 where the "specialists" in this sort of matter hang out.
Post a link to this thread over there as well, so that people will know what has already been suggested.

  • I mistakenly deleted the files that allowed for the restore last session tab on homepage; how to reinstall?

I was cleaning up desktop and deleted a firefox file that I didn't recognize....it ended up being the one that allows for opening up the previous session

I have no idea how/why it was on desktop....and I emptied the recycle bin already! I was just trying to get organized a bit and clean up clutter...but I did use that feature almost daily, as it helped me to just close up the computer in the evening without worrying about getting to all the work the next day, as I would now immediately remember what I was doing!

  • Document scanning software that allows for custom search fields, attaching a thumbnail to the scanned document file, and works with any scanner?

I am a professional photographer, with years of paper model releases. I would like to find a document scanning software that works with my exisiting flatbed scanner (Canon MP250) that I can customize the seach fields for (ie. name, agency, job, etc.) and also attach a thumbnail image to as a job reference. I would like the document to be searchable as well. I've looked at a few different document scanning software companies, but I haven't found one that allows me to attach a jpeg file to a scanned PDF. Does anyone know if software like this exists?

You can't do better than to use VueScan:

  • Is there an app that allows for content to be arranged within an interface similar to the App Store's interface?

I have tried a number of applications for arranging media. The ones I am looking to use at work however, we like to have using feeds from sites like flickr. We have Flipboard, which looks great, and usually works pretty great too, but there are errors and lame things about it. This app arranges images based on upload date, which you have to change manually through flickr to make images display in the correct format which is a pain, and images still will become out of alignment in landscape vs. portrait mode.
I was wondering if there was a media app out there that is arranged similar to the app store? I think this would make for a really slick interface to have. Being able to have heading images and sections along with panning sections lower on the page that allow you to scroll content and click to access a larger view.
Has anyone found really great media displaying apps? Any that happen to be similar to the app store layout? Really, any apps you have found for displaying content would be a great help.
    Thanks!

Not that I know of, and having seen a picture of it

Doesn't look all that great, you lose so much of the picture quality just to see a desktop?
Better to have a 1/8 th page window floating on top of other windows instead.

  • Are there any free APPS that allow for chang/embellish  the folder icon

    tired of blue folders.
there must be some kind of app that can change its appearance or change color or whatever.
can one change the text font of indiv folders?
wouldnt one expect this from OS X4.6
im shocked it has to be the same old blue folder

    Hi, Glenn.
You can assign any icon you want to a file or folder: see "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Changing the icon of a file or folder.”.
You can find nice sets of icons (what you need for step 1) at sites like Icon Factory or ResExcellence.
Some folks really like the inexpensive shareware application FolderBrander for customizing folders. There's a free trial period and it seems very reasonably priced for what it does.
The freeware application TinkerTool will allow you to change some of the default fonts used in Tiger.
When looking for new applications, I recommend searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings can be helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff.
    Good luck!

  • A Pebble app that allows for voting up/down as well as advancing the track (no prev in radio mode)

Pebble is touting that with the release of their new "Pebble App Store", happening soon out now, Pandora will have an app that runs on the Pebble allowing you to vote a track up/down as well as advance to the next song.  As I subscribe to Spotify and not Pandora, I would LOVE to see this same kind of app coming from Spotify.  Currently, the Pebble can control your music, but only through the "now playing" system on a given smartphone.  Personally, I have an iPhone 5 and while it works flawlessly to play/pause and advance tracks, having the voting up/down functionality in an actual Spotify app would be amazing.
EDIT: The app store is open, but Pandora have not released their app for some reason.  Perhaps they are waiting for the official release of the Steel (I know the promo units had it pre-loaded for reviewers).  I think it would be very interesting if Spotify were to beat them to it!  There are several other apps from major companies, like Yelp and Foursquare, so this isn't just a niche market.  Other companies are realizing the potential, and I'd be really excited if Spotify did, too!
The attached image is from a review on tomsguide.com showing Pandora's Pebble app as it will look while controlling the smartphone it is linked to.  I think it's a very clean and simple interface that could easily be replicated by Spotify.  The two services, while streaming radio, are very similar.  For those of us using Pebble I think it may be tempting to switch without this feature, which is the main reason I have brought this to the ideas forum.

Already created a new idea, but as this already exists, I'll add my UI ideas here too :)
    My idea:
Multiple UIs, accessible via a long press of the middle button. There you can choose the screen:
    Playback screen:
    - up and down will skip tracks while holding them will search in track.
    - middle is play/pause
On Volume screen up and down will adjust volume instead of back/forward.
    Rating screen:
    - Up and down will rate the track while listening to Radio, if listening to playlist they will toggle shuffle/loop
    - middle will (un)star the current track.
    Playlist selector
    - Browse through your playlists and tracks
    - middle button to open playlist/play selected track, hold to get options: play next, play radio based on selection, hide (which will hide the selector and go back to last used screen); back navigation with back button.

  • Will a software update be released that allows for apps, or should I just buy a Touch?

I have the 7th Gen Nano and it's awesome.  But I got it as a gift, and I was wondering if there was any development on releasing a software update that would allow some apps.  True that the screen isn't exactly optimized for gaming or reading, but there are some practical apps that would be useful on the Nano.  I'm just curious.

You should buy an iPod touch. The iPod touch and nano are completely different architectures.

  • How do I create an installer for my project that allows for variable data entry like a server unc path?

    Hello All,
I have a questions and a few hours of scouring the internet hasn't brought me much closer to an answer.
Here's what I want to do. I have created a visual c# wpf application. I want to have an installer that during install time will have a text box or something where I can enter a server path as a string. Basically my application needs to know where to look
for a server unc path \\server\somesharedfolder that it will be accessing primarily for its work. Secondly, how do I reference said information from within my code.
I have come across application/user scoped settings, which appears to be what I'm looking for. However I can't find a way to have the installer prompt for a value "Server Path:" __________ that I could type into during installation. So far it appears
the only way would be to edit the config.deploy file before running the installer, which isn't a big deal but you'd think there'd be an easy way to take in variables during install.
EDIT: Apparently I can't edit the config.deploy file as I get an error message about the hash not matching.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hello,
The forums I found confusing, didn't know the best place to put this question so I put it here.
I have found the answer over at stackoverflow and will detail here for anyone who may stumble across the same problem.
The problem is ClickOnce seemingly doesn't support this feature. Installshield LE either doesn't or does but its incredibly too complicated if all you need is one variable passed to the registry during installation. And it seems the words used for googling
this particular problem will never lead you to the solution.
So here's how to do it (we will be first adding the Visual Studio Installer Add-on to restore original installer project functionality):
    1) Inside of visual studio 2013 go to Tools -> Extensions and Updates
    2) On the left-hand side click on Online -> Visual Studio Gallery
    3) In the upper-right search box search for "Visual Studio Installer"
    4) Download the extension labeled "Microsoft Visual Studio Installer Projects"
    5) Install, then open a new project under Templates -> Other Project Templates -> Visual Studio Installer -> Setup Project
    6) Now for the gold. In the solution explorer there are icons in a bar just below its title bar, highlight till you see "User Interface Setup" and open it.
    7) Now you can right click on Start, Progress, End etc any Category heading and hit Add Dialog.
    8) From here for my purposes, I used TextBoxes A
    9) Once you add it, click on it and observe its properties window. You will see Label, Property, and Value. Make a note of the property name as it will be used to store the data directly into the registry. *Note: there appears to be no way to perform data
validation using the built in textbox dialogs, users can enter whatever they want and move on.
    10) Go to the registry editor on the same icon bar under solution explorer.
    11) Specify your registry folder, make a new value (I used string) and name it whatever you like. In the value section enter the property label formatted as such   [EDITA1]   depending on your value.
    12) Now when you run the installer for your project, it will take data into that field and place it into the registry provided it has access to that key with the permissions you run the program under.

  • Help! Looking for an iPad app that allows for efficiently filling in PDF forms we create. Know of any?

I created a quote form for our sales guys to use in the field and we would like them to be able to have the capability to fill it in on their ipads. Is there an app that will let us do the following:
    Fill in a pripriotary form
    Click to next field
Force character limits so the text does wrap and print poorly
Edit text after moving on to another field
    Printable
    Send by email
If an app like this doesn't existion, how much would it cost to commisison someone to create it?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Ah. I'm surprised, but there we go.
    Have a look here ...

(courtesy of googling 'OSX free multitrack recording software')
Didn't have time to do more than skim, but 'Ardour' looked promising. Protools is the only one I've used, the full product is one of the industry standards, but the free 'lite' version listed here seems to be limited to 2 in/out as well.
Referring to your original post, I'd think trying to write or 'script' something would be a nightmare ... synchronisation of streams within something like Applescript would be a major issue, quite apart from anything else.
