here's the idea...
your new laptop only when user presses screen's lid-release it opens itself unassisted via internal motor!!
let me know what you think!

My HP Envy 17 is totally useless.  I have tried updating the bios along with new ATI driver.  This is my first HP machine and will be my last; I have had this thing for 6 month and constantly has problems.  How did this machine get through HP's QA/QC groups?
The video driver stops and crashes and if I turn the ATI's power management off, the machine goes to blue screen after 4 to 6 hours.  I cannot use this, I must have a stable machine to software develop on and this is not the machine to have -- it is not good for any computer related activity.
What is HP doing about this issue?  This seems to be common with this Machine.

  • My personal laundry list for the N8.

Notably, the bugs I have experienced thus far are:
    1. Inability for Wi-Fi to connect in Offline mode if you have previously gone to Offline mode and said No when activating an app that requires data connection.
    2. When you turn on the phone without a SIM card, then hit the Call button, it will stay in an infinite loop in the Dialer screen.  It'll ask you to please insert a sim card, followed by either OK or Cancel.  So after you insert the SIM card, you hit OK, then it repeats the question.  If you hit Cancel, it repeats the question.  You can't get out of this infinite cycle other than turning the N8 off.
    3. After a hard reset of your phone, the Ovi Social app is missing the widget for the home screen.  Yes, you can go to the Nokia Messaging OTA site to get the update, but after 2 hard resets, the installation of the update gives me a "Unable to install" error.  Which is a joke, because after the first hard reset it worked wonderfully.  And it never worked for me subsequently.
    4. Even after defining a WLAN destination, if you don't have a SIM card, you can't configure any mail other Mail for Exchange.  Yes, the new Mail app tries to use mail routed through Nokia, but at least give me the option to create mailboxes using old traditional direct IMAP or POP3.
    5. With my N95 and N97, as soon as I turn on my car (equipped with Nokia CK-100), I automatically get connected to BT HFP and A2DP profiles.  The car kit will tell me, "Phone connected."  A second later, "Player connected."  With the N8, the car kit will only connect to just the phone automatically.  For the player to connect while the car is on, I have to open up the music player and play a music, which will force N8 to make the A2DP connection.  So when that happens, you hear a 1.5 second message saying, "Player connected" followed by music that is already 2 to 3 seconds into the song.  I thought it was perhaps the Car Kit getting full with the list of paired devices (memory is for 8 pairings), but clearing the list doesn't help.  I thought it was the Car Kit firmware, so I upgraded it to 4.401, no luck.  Then when I tried my old N97 and N95, it worked as expected!  But not the N8.
    6. Sometimes after a hard reset, even when I respond with selecting my country/city and entering my time, the phone will start with the UK time zone instead.  The UTC time is correct, but for the wrong time zone.  Why does it do that?!?
    7. 60% of the time when I turn on the phone (even when it was Normal mode during the previous shut down), I do not get the classic Nokia tone when the iconic handshake video plays.  This is your brand recognition!  Something so valuable that it's impossible to put a dollar value on it.  And you botch that up?!?
    List of the reduced functionalities:
    1. In previous generations of Mail app, if an email contains what appears to be a phone number, Symbian will make it clickable so that you can call the number.  Not so with Mail app in S^3.
    2. In previous versions of Messaging app, if I receive a SMS, I can either click on the call button (no longer exists in the N8) or Options > Call to call the sender of the SMS automatically.  Now, with S^3, the Call option is no longer in Options.  Makes it really hard to call the SMS sender back while you're driving.
    3. In the previous generations of Mail app, I can call up the Listen option when I'm either in a Mailbox or have the email open, and it will read the email.  Now, this functionality only exists on the Messaging app, not Mail app.
    4. If you open up the Message Reader app, it will be able to playback all your SMS, MMS, Mail mailbox's messages.  Great, right?  But in order to listen to an email, you must first go through all the SMS messages first before it will play back any emails.  So if you have 20 SMSs, you have to click on the FFw button 20 times before you get to listen to your email.  Truly a brilliant design, whoever came up with that.
    5. In the previous Symbian web browsers, when I hit the Back button, I can either go back/forward using the left/right gestures, and selecting a page by tapping the page.  I also have the option of hitting the left or right arrows right above the soft keys and hitting Select (left soft key) or Cancel/Stop (right soft key).  In the N8, everything but the Select key is there.  Now it's replaced by a blank?!?  If you want to force me to use gestures and taps, then at least do me a favor and remove the left/right arrows on the screen.  (Surprisingly, if I invoke the web browser using the YouTube "app", the Select soft key appears during back/forward navigation.  Hmmm...)
    List of improvement suggestions:
    1. Whenever you're in a screen that has a tiny left/right arrow (such as reading an SMS message, or looking at your Messaging Inbox, allow me to swipe left or right to go to the previous/next message or folder.  This functionality already exists in the Calendar app.  So why stop there?  Not only that, but extend it to Settings menu!  Why should gestures be limited to up and down, except for the Calendar application that allows left/right?
    2. Allow landscape dialer, like the N97.
    3. Uhm, what happened to the Converter application?  It has been a staple of all Nokia phones, and suddenly it's missing from the flagship phone?  Nokia's comeback phone?!?
    4. A much simpler VPN application?  Look at what Apple did in just a little over a year.  A simple process of logging into Cisco VPN.  What's Nokia's way, after having VPN solution for years and years?  Still a mess.
    5. Previously, connectivity settings were easier to get to with the N91, N95 and N97.  Now, I have A) Menu > Options > Settings > Connectivity > Wi-Fi, and B) Menu > Options > Settings > Connectivity > Settings > Switch to Wi-Fi?  I can work around it as a power user.  What about those people who make up the biggest market share of iPhone users who are not technologically savvy?  And do you see the irony with Settings buried within Settings menu?
    6. Port all functionalities of PC Suite to Ovi Suite, and fix all the bugs in Ovi Suite.  The latest 3.0.0.271 still has bugs and missing functionalities.  Open back up the dual code development pipelines (PC Suite and Ovi Suite) to the N8 until all core functionalites are successfully brought over to Ovi Suite.

Status update after installing PR 1.1 version 013.016 for product code 059DV2 on 2011.02.20, plus new bug reports after testing and using PR 1.1 extensively for 44 days.  I thought I needed to put in this status update before installing PR 1.2, which became available on 2011.04.03 for my market.
    1. Inability for Wi-Fi to connect in Offline mode if you have previously gone to Offline mode and said No when activating an app that requires data connection.  Status as of PR 1.1:  Semi-fixed.  After installing PR 1.1, when you're in Offline mode and you use an App that required Internet connection and subsequently say No when asked if you want to allow WiFi in Offline mode, it will still prompt you later on.  But this is semi-fixed because sometimes, when the N8 is in Offline mode and you try to access an app that needs Internet connection, the question "Allow Wi-Fi connections during this offline period?" doesn't even bother to prompt you, other than "Conn. Unavailable" in the upper left corner of the screen.  What da?!?
Status as of PR 1.1:  Fixed.
Status as of PR 1.1:  Unknown.  Have not tried to do a hard reset, but now that Social is on 1.3, I'm sure the installer file now includes the widget.  But I also heard that the latest beta version of 1.3 (as of this writing) may require an uninstallation of older versions of Social first, otherwise it may fail.  Other reports indicate Social no longer works after the update.  Follow the discussion in betalabs.nokia.com for the Social 1.3 app.
    4. Even after defining a WLAN destination, if you don't have a SIM card, you can't configure any mail other Mail for Exchange.  Yes, the new Mail app tries to use mail routed through Nokia, but at least give me the option to create mailboxes using old traditional direct IMAP or POP3.  Status as of PR 1.1:  Still unfixed.  No SIM card, no ability to define a new mailbox other than Mail for Exchange.  You absolutely must have SIM card.  Why?!?
Status as of PR 1.1:  Still broken.  I won't be able to test this out with PR 1.2, since I ripped out Nokia CK-100 and installed CK-600.  I've never used the N97 with CK-600, so I don't know if the A2DP connection is automatic or not, but with N8 PR 1.1 and either CK-100 or CK-600, the A2DP connection is still NOT automatic.
    6. Sometimes after a hard reset, even when I respond with selecting my country/city and entering my time, the phone will start with the UK time zone instead.  The UTC time is correct, but for the wrong time zone.  Why does it do that?!?  Status as of PR 1.1:  Unknown.  I've only done 1 hard reset since upgrading to PR 1.1, and it didn't misbehave.  But during PR 1.0, the behavior wasn't constant, but half the time.
    7. 60% of the time when I turn on the phone (even when it was Normal mode during the previous shut down), I do not get the classic Nokia tone when the iconic handshake video plays.  This is your brand recognition!  Something so valuable that it's impossible to put a dollar value on it.  And you botch that up?!?  Status as of PR 1.1:  Still a problem.  Now, it seems like 90% of the time when I turn on the N8, the Nokia tone doesn't play during the hand shake.
    8. [New bug in PR 1.1] Light time-out:  I never had a problem with this in N8 PR 1.0, but only started noticing this in PR 1.1.  When you have a browser up and running, and you leave the N8 alone, like no movement or screen activity such as leaving it on a table, the screen doesn't black out after the allotted time setting in Settings > Phone > Display > Light time-out.  It will go dim, but the screensaver never kicks in.  This happens 75% of the time, and is quite annoying.  This behavior seems to manifest itself when you're in an app that requires Internet connection, such as the browser or email application.
    9. [New bug in PR 1.1 or possibly in PR 1.0 as well] Apps dependent on operator even on unlocked and unsubsidized Nokia phones:  I am not sure if this is a new problem with PR 1.1 or existed in PR 1.0, but it appears that some apps like Social, Email and Ovi Maps are dependent on operator permissions, even if the device is unsubsidized and purchased unlocked.  I don't know if this is a problem with PR 1.0 because when I traveled from 2011.02.25 to 2011.03.10, I already upgraded my N8 to PR 1.1.  But basically, after I popped in a pre-paid SIM card at another country, starting Social and trying to log in will tell me something along the lines of checking with the operator and then telling me I cannot use Social.  (I traveled to China.)  But I could kind of work around it by exiting, then tapping the Social widget.  Sometimes hitting refresh will somehow allow me to get Facebook updates in China, and sometimes it will tell me Service Unavailable.  Likewise with Ovi Maps.  When I was back home in the USA, I had many other online services, like Time Out, Lonely Planet, Trip Advisor, etc.  But once I popped in a Chinese SIM card and go online with the operator (3G or Edge), all my online services disappeared, and replaced with Chinese services which was totally useless as my USA N8 cannot render Chinese characters.  Mind you, I did not connect to 3G or Edge for a few days, so during those few days when I was just using WiFi, I was still able to look up things in English in Trip Advisor, such as nearby restaurants or hotels.  But as soon as I connected online via SIM operator network, features started disappearing.  Same with email behavior.  No SIM inserted, can't configure new email mailboxes.  No SIM card, Social displays "Service is not available" even if I have WiFi AP connected.  The important question here is, why are unlocked and unsubsidized S^3 phones even checking with the operator if I can run whatever services?
    List of the reduced functionalities:
    1. In previous generations of Mail app, if an email contains what appears to be a phone number, Symbian will make it clickable so that you can call the number.  Not so with Mail app in S^3.  Status as of PR 1.1:  Still a problem.
Status as of PR 1.1:  Still a problem.
    3. In the previous generations of Mail app, I can call up the Listen option when I'm either in a Mailbox or have the email open, and it will read the email.  Now, this functionality only exists on the Messaging app, not Mail app.  Status as of PR 1.1:  Still a problem.
Status as of PR 1.1:  Still a problem.
Hmmm...)  Status as of PR 1.1:  Still a problem.
    6. [New reduction of functionality in PR 1.1] This is truly a new one for Nokia - Breathing Light Notification:  In the N8 PR 1.1, when you go to Settings > Phone > Notification lights > Notification light > Events notified, you can now enable/disable 2 events:  "Missed call" and "New message".  But in PR 1.0, you had a third choice:  "New email".  Uhm...  **bleep**?!?  Why would Nokia remove a notification event type?!?  Is the business justification that nobody cared enough about the breathing light that having some extra lines of code for notification of new emails would be a waste of precious firmware C:\ drive space?!?
    7. No ability to specify which drive to use for Mailbox repository:  In the previous iterations of Symbian, I could tell the mailbox which drive to use, the C:\ drive or the mass storage or even the memory card.  Now, that flexibility is gone.  Why is this a problem?  Recently, I was sending a bunch of emails with big attachments, and suddenly, I was notified that C: drive was running out of memory!  What do you know?  The Sent mail is stored in C:\ drive!  That's real smart, considering real estate in C:\ drive is already little to begin with.
Status as of PR 1.1:  Nokia is still ignoring me on this one.
    2. Allow landscape dialer, like the N97.  Status as of PR 1.1:  Added!  Kudos!
    3. Uhm, what happened to the Converter application?  It has been a staple of all Nokia phones, and suddenly it's missing from the flagship phone?  Nokia's comeback phone?!?  Status as of PR 1.1:  Nokia is still ignoring me on this one.

Nokia, I hope this thread captures your attention within the developers and management.  Thank you.

  • Will iTunes ever Enhance the Synchronization Process?

This is more of iTunes suggestion and if anyone knows how to not use hot patch or third party workarounds to accomlish what I would like to see, great.
I have long stuggled with the time consuming aspect of Syncing with iTunes.  If I add one new Contact in Outlook, I really don't want to sync Music, Photos, Browser Bookmarks, Calendar etc every single time. It's very slow and time consuming for such small updates. To be truly user freindly and considerate, it would be nice to Sync (if desired) any one aspect without the entire process as Options to the full Sync. I am not against Syncing everything, but when it makes sense to do so.
iTunes also only lists IE and Safari for syncing bookmarks.  I realize Apple and Microsoft are two dominat players for certain products but in the browser market share (desktops NOT mobile), Microsoft has been falling for years (~54%) and Safari  is barely a trace at ~5%.  So why is Firefox ~20% and Chrome ~19% not options? Bias perhaps. Desktop computing is far from dead and PC's  ~92% which I use for my business and MAC ~7%.
I LOVE my iPhone, the iPad and Apple for these products which seem to constanly update, but iTunes remains basically unfriendly.

Hi I just tried to add Outlook to my iPhone and every thing went haywire. I love this phone for many other reasons but to sync, download, or any software transfer is time consuming, usually does not work. iTunes just needs more attention from its developers, and/or sponsers

  • No audio on windows 8.1 mid-2012 MBP

I was able to install windows 8.1 pro on my mid-2012 Macbook Pro with relative ease and everything works fine... except a complete lack of audio. I have read in several forums to uninstall various audio devices and drivers, and I've tried downloading multiple versions of the Boot Camp system support drivers, but no matter what I do, nothing changes.
I paid for Windows almost a month ago and I've been wrestling with these issues on Boot Camp and these things ever since, this program needs more attention from the developers.
    Any advice would be greatly

Hi, it seems that You install windows in EFI mode, this problem is EFI related.
If windows is the only system on Your macbook, You must insert 64bit win8 dvd or USB flash and boot with Alt pressed.
You will see Dvd /Windows/ and Dvd /EFI/.Choose Dvd /Windows/ and install as usual, then use correct bootcamp drivers /version 5.1/, and it will be ok.

  • Podcasts post with height="" break some browsers

OK, I was pulling my hair out on this one. Podcasts posted to user blogs with PP2 were appearing fine on Safari. But some users were reporting they couldn't see the podcasts at all. I finally traced it to an empty height attribute in the IMG tag. Yes, some podcasts are being posted with thumbnails that have height attributes set to "", as in height="". This is not a problem with Safari, and generally not a problem with other browsers...except the big one, Internet Explorer for Windows.
A google search later, and I found this...
    http://www.lattimore.id.au/2007/05/21/internet-explorer-img-element-empty-width- height-attribute-error/
Apparently, IE interprets an empty height attribute as a zero. So in IE, the podcast thumbnails are forced to render zero pixels high. No wonder they didn't show up.
What I can't figure out is why this is happening. I'm not doing anything exotic here, just feeding video files to Podcast Producer 2 in a fairly simple workflow. Has anyone dissected the process enough to know where in the process the height attributes for the PNG thumbnails are inserted into the html generated?
And does anyone know the best way to get the attention of the developers of PP2 (and the Wiki Server)? This seems to me to belong in the category of "high priority bug" and I'd like to get it looked at before it bites others.

Let me post an update on what I've found out so far. The height attribute in the IMG tag is often empty when the file uploaded to PP2 is below a certain resolution (such as 320 x 240). But even when the height attribute is not empty, neither the height nor the width values match the actual values of the video.
The effect of an empty height tag is bad enough, as this breaks IE for Windows. But having inaccurate height and width tags breaks playback on IE, Firefox and even Safari for Windows. This appears to be an effect of referencing the video location as the value to an ALT attribute in the image tag.
To illustrate, consider the html generated by PP2/Wiki Server when a podcast created from a file of 640x480 original resolution is posted to a user blog...
    <br class="" /><br class="" /><img src="http://servername:8171/2009-09-25/SANY0001-posterimage.png" height="360" width="480.0" role="button" alt="http://servername:8171/2009-09-25/SANY0001.m4v" class="aligncenter posterimg" tabindex="0" />
The resulting page displays fine on a Mac. On a windows machine, the thumbnail appears as a 480x360 image, but when you click on it to begin playback, the video doesn't play. Instead, you just hear the audio, and the only thing you see is the controller bar.
This stumped me for the longest time. I thought it had to be something related to the Quicktime plugin for windows, especially since I noticed this behavior with IE, Firefox and Safari on Windows. I took a few videos of this strange behavior and posted it to my MobileMe Gallery (http://gallery.me.com/pthompsen#100334).
What I've discovered is that if you remove these height and width attributes entirely, the videos playback fine on Windows. It seems that Quicktime on a Mac can scale down a video to match smaller width and height attributes, but the Quicktime Plugin for Windows can't. Or won't.
Now if only I can find a quick way to change the html of the almost 500 videos I've got posted on the server now. Sed as su, perhaps, but one wrong move...

  • Method GUI_DOWNLOAD not creating CRLF at end-of-each-line of output

Hello SDN Community,  has anyone experienced CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=> GUI_DOWNLOAD not putting the CRLF at end of exported lines?  This can be seen when you view the output file in notepad (the file contents wrap) or an editor with hex view enabled  (0A0D).
I have tried running an ABAP that runs this method and on some people's laptop's the file wraps and on others the file is formatted (as would be expected) as per the CRLF's.
My understanding is that the GUI_DOWNLOAD method should provide the CRLF's.   And on my laptop (running Vista and SAP ECC 6.0 back-end) it wraps the output because there are no CRLF's in the file.
    Your experiences would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Dean Atteberry.

Thank you, Alejandro, for your comments.  I am using two systems - on one it works and on the other it does not.
The one that works is an SAP ECC 6.0 where the CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES class has a Last Change date of 03.07.2006.
The one do not work is SAP ECC 6.0 where the CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES class has a Last Change date of 07/08/2009.
If I look at the code in GET_PLATFORM, it is verry different between the two systems.
On the one that works, it executes following code and platformID has value of '5'.  This later used to assign the correct value for CRLF variable which is used to concatenate to end of records  (value is '0A0D').
    ELSE.
    *     SAP GUI for Windows
          IF ACTIVEX IS NOT INITIAL.
    * returns Windows Platform
    * VER_PLATFORM_WIN32s             0
    * VER_PLATFORM_WIN32_WINDOWS      1       (Win95/98)

                QUEUE_ONLY = ' '
              IMPORTING
                RESULT     = platformID
              EXCEPTIONS
                OTHERS     = 1.
            IF SY-SUBRC <> 0.
              RAISE CNTL_ERROR.
            ENDIF.
On the one that does not work, it executes following code.  In the debugger, when control comes back from CL_GUI_CFW=>FLUSH call, I can see the PLATFORMID variable change to '15'.  This is moved to M_PLATFORM and ultimately is used later in a case statement to assign the appropriate value to CRLF variable.
HOWEVER, THERE IS NO "WHEN 15" statement in the CASE statement - IT ONLY GOES UP TO '14'.   Because of this, no value is assigned to the CRLF variable and when subsequently this variable is concatenated to the output line, there is no CRLF (0A0D) at the end of the line.  Because the CRLF variable is blank.  [see coding snippets at end-of-note]
Is there an better place than General ABAP forum to discuss this?  Possibly this item might benefit from the attention of SAP developers?
Following are code snippets illustrating findings from debugging...
This shows the FLUSH statement that causes '15' to appear in the PLATFORMID variable.
    IF bPLATFORMEX = ABAP_TRUE.
            CALL METHOD HANDLE->CALL_METHOD

  • Turning into a Dinosaur

There was a time when Apple Computers and Software just worked. It was great to have a Mac because everything ran smoothly without ever running into any problems.
It seems to me like Apple is becoming to big, slow (not enough employees) or whatever since more and more problems are appearing since they grow again.
Maybe its time for them to fall again. I nearly hope so. Maybe this would raise the quality of their products again.
Why do I complain? And why in the iTunes Forum?
Well, first thing, Audio CDs inserted into a Mac sometimes show up in the playlist columns, sometimes not. This problem for me exists since upgrading to Leopard and since then there have been a few updates to iTunes, Leopard and QuickTime.
But the problem still is not fixed!!!
Second, burning CDs with songs from more than one album fails everytime. It even renders the CD drive unusable until you restart the computer. I noticed this problem quite some time ago. I have also seen that other people are having the same problem. But.
    It doesn't get fixed!!!
Third, maybe you know the turbo.264 encoder usb stick from Elgato. If you export movies to AppleTV they are displayed correctly when playing them in Front Row and, since the last QuickTime update, in QuickTime Player too (wow, they fixed this, hurray) but playing them in iTunes the movies are displayed distorted (wrong aspect ratio).
Elgato told me I will have to wait for an iTunes update that fixes this issue as they cannot fix this because it's Apples bug not theirs. Three iTunes updates have past.
    It didn't get fixed!!!
And one a little bit off topic. Since Leopard users are experiencing problems with their WiFi connections having to turn AirPort off and on again to get the Mac see and hook on to their networks. This is especially annoying when your computer is hooked up to a TV. I don't want to turn on the TV everytime I want to something on this computer that can be done with Screen Sharing.
However this problem exists for very long now.
    IT JUST DOESN'T GET FIXED!!!
For loyal customers you have to be loyal TO your customers. Otherwise they will sooner or later leave Apple as the company with ONCE the most loyal customers.

It looks like we all have developed "work arounds". This might be ok for a picture every now and then, but obviously is not an efficient way to go if lots of photos are involved. It also does not "solve" the interface problem that appears to exist between Adobe and our Apple programs. Does anyone know how this situation is brought to the attention of Apple developers so that they can take positive action (with Adobe if necessary) to get a real fix? Do we just hope they read our discussion board(s) or is there action that we are suppose to take to bring it to their attention? It would be a shame if all the discussion just ended here.

  • Image map areas not dynamic

I have created a complexer version of the imageMenu, http://www.phatfusion.net/imagemenu/, which allows the active shapes to be any shape, not only rectangular, see http://jrvproducts.nl/ . This works great in all browser except safari, not in windows, neither on Mac.
The menu works with a single transparent overlay image which has image map areas (see source if you like. The map start at line 37). These areas are updates onDomReady and also when the menu is in motion by calculating the coordinates and setting the 'coords' attribute of every area. Setting this attribute doesn't seem to work in safari. I believe safari 3.0 on windows did do it onDomready, but not after page load. Now, in 3.1, the 'coords' aren't even being set onDomready anymore.
To see the 'coords' updating in action, see http://www.saulmade.nl/forum/slideMenu/ . Here I enabled the 'draw areas' option I've built for testing purposes. (It's actually drawing the shapes on canvas, but used the same coordinates as by which the areas are updated)
This looks to me like a bug, but perhaps anyone has a better explanation?
Can I submit issues to Apple?

darn, no-one seems to know an answer
To get this a bit further, or at least under the attention of the developers, *is there any way I can submit issues to Apple?*

  • Hardware Accelerated Video Texture?

Considering how few folks are actually posting their questions here, I would hope this would be answered.
My question is regarding Hardware Accelerated Video Textures in Proscenium. Seeing how this API is being brought out by Adobe themselves and they have the ability to provide access to this feature, I'm curious why something like this has not been done?
The folks over at Away3D have detailed that they have also requested this support from Adobe but have not have any response from Adobe on this. This is pretty sad considering these guys actually develop this entire API on their own time with no financial support from Adobe.
Now that both Flash Player and AIR have been kicked in the teeth by the HTML5 / Javascript tidal wave, one would think Adobe would be paying attention to the developers who are still doing all they can with their technologies.
Hardware Accelerated Video Textures (H.264) in Proscenium (for web and mobile deployment) would be a great way to say to folks like me that you are still listening to the people using your tools.

Despite there being only a hand full of comments on the entire Proscenium board, it would appear that the Proscenium team doesn't have time to answer them.
In regards to this particular subject (that being hardware accelerated video textures) I don't think this is going to happen. I've personally spent the last year speaking to every person I could think of at Adobe, Away3D and even folks on the Proscenium team. The bottom line is that to do this Adobe must facilitate this capability. Away3D and other API providers cannot overcome the current obstacles to realize this feature. This all begins with Adobe providing access to these capabilities to the other API developers (Away3D).
When Proscenium first came on the scene, I immediately contacted the Proscenium team requesting this feature. I thought since Proscenium itself was being developed at Adobe, this features could be developed (at least as an experiment) more quickly. Alas no. I've gone so far as to contact several Adobe Evangelists telling them that the Away3D team would like access to this feature. Again, no. Just silence.
So, if want to create truly hardware accelerated video textures using a 3D API, forget it. (especially for mobile). Isn't going to happen. This is particularly true for iOS, where native H.264 support isn't supported on AIR.

  • Bad video thumbnails in iPhoto

    Hi gang,
When I take video on my camera, I use Image Capture to get stuff off of my camera. If I have a video that's flipped 90 degrees, I use Quicktime (Movie Properities) to flip it upright. However, when import videos that I've flipped, the thumbnails get messed up (see screenshot here: http://www.gdbdp.com/temp/bad_thumbnails.jpg). Any ideas what I can do to fix this / keep it from happening?
    Thanks
    Dan P.

    Dan:
I get the same phenomenon with iPhoto 7 (08). I don't know if there's anything you can do as you probably have the latest version installed, etc. Definitely a bug in the thumbnail rendering. You can report it to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html but since iPhoto 8 (09) is out it won't get any attention from the developers. This does not happen with iPhoto 8.
I did think of a possible workaround.
1 - import your movie into iPhoto without rotating.
2 - once in iPhoto rotate the movie and save back to its location in the Originals folder.
You'll have to live with an incorrect thumbnail (it can't be rotate) but it will be intact.
You might make a test library and try it out on one movie before working on your primary library.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Missing features on QT X

Unhappy newbie. Many thousands of Mac users across the nation depend on Quicktime, Real, and Windows Media to playback "legacy files" as well as files that remain in widespread use, especially midi files. From what I have read, these are no longer accessible unless you revert back to QT 7 (which I have reinstalled).
In regard to midi, those of us that compose and send midi files depend on our general audience to have a media reader that reads these. The public will not download a pay reader just to listen to one song or so. For example, three decades of player-piano rolls have been transcribed for midi, and these archives (and similar archives for 20th century instrumental music) will no longer be as accessible, not to mention a lot of the modern instrumental track music (such as Garage Band) that utilize midi protocol to trigger built-in instrumental sounds. And what about the Pro Version that allowed midi editing? Will it, too, soon be in limbo so that we can't tailor our midi playback? And what will be the fate of the exception sound samples utilized by the QT interface?
Real and Windows Media Players have retained midi playback in their latest versions because they understand its importance. But what was Apple thinking? Was it too difficult or not enough time to retain these codecs in QT X? Are they going to be re-inserted in a future version after QT 7 is phased out? There is considerable concern about this that is being expressed beyond this forum. My question: Where is the best place to bring this concern, and the magnitude of this "mistake," to the attention of QT developers (short of writing directly to Steve!)

QuickTime X doesn't handle some of the "legacy" formats but you can always use QuickTime Player 7.6.3 (Snow Leopard DVD / Optional Installs package) to "play" MIDI files.
QuickTime Player Pro version 6 was (is) the last version to offer "editing" (changing musical instruments) with MIDI files.

  • Irritating UI "bugs" when renaming and deleting images

I have been using iPhoto for a couple of years now, and there are some minor glitches in the UI that simply frustrates the **** out of me in the new '08 version. Perhaps it's due to "wrong" usage, so please tell me if I can avoid them:
Firstly, I'm often viewing and comparing my images in fullscreen when cleaning up a large batch of vacation photos, but when I apple+backspc. to delete an image, it jumps to the start of the Event instead of showing me the image before/after the one I deleted - WHY!? This is only in fullscreen view - if I space-view it goes to the next picture as expected?
Secondly, there is apparently no shortcut for renaming an image, when viewing the thumbnails in an event or album. Numeric enter doesn't work (as ie. in iTunes), neither does (Windows) F2 or anything I could think of at least. Is there a shortcut that I just missed - please tell me!
This could seem rather minor, but my library counts 5800+ images, and I spend literally days in this program when I'm sorting new Events, so if these issues could be addressed either by an update or if I just need to know some little trick, I would be a much happier customer.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
when I apple+backspc. to delete an image, it jumps to the start of the Event
Yes, that's a bug that's been reported before. Report it at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html as the more reports the more likely it will come to the attention of the developers.
As far as renaming or titling in the thumbnail mode, you have to first click on the title so the title field is activated. Then you can enter any title you'd like.
You can also batch title files by using the Photos->Batch Change->Title menu option. This will rename them all the same or add a sequential number to the end of the title.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. • Potential bug in CS4 on Windows 7 Ultimate X64

    Hi there,
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate (64-Bit) and noticed that when I am creating a new site, the directory specified for the Website root and the Images root is shortened by one folder-level. For example, if the website path and image path I selected I via the Explorer was something like this, respectively:
    Website Root:
    C:\Workspace\Website Projects\My Cool Website
    Images Root:
    C:\Workspace\Website Projects\My Cool Website\images
The paths in the actual Dreamweaver Site configuration window would be:
    Website Root:
    C:\Workspace\Website Projects\
    Images Root:
    C:\Workspace\Website Projects\My Cool Website\
I'm not sure if it's a Dreamweaver Problem, an O.S problem, or a my PC's problem, but I thought I'd bring it to the attention of the developers, and, hopefully, have someone who is on the same setup as myself report if they too have this issue.
    Cheers,
    Nathaniel

This is a known issue. See http://forums.adobe.com/thread/478327.

  • Missing locales: UTF8 for X11

    Hello everyone
I have been trying to get Vietnamese input under X11 working for over two years now. My system keyboard layouts only partly work: I can use the normal keys, but the dead keys only create a space, not the added accent required. Since my language is largely composed of vowels with added accents, this disabled Vietnamese input completely.
I think one of my problems might be a lack of locale. /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale has two Vietnamese locales, neither of them UTF8. I've tried setting the legacy TCVN one in xterm_script and xterm_script.sh, but that doesn't help. It's a UTF8 locale I need, anyway. en_US.UTF-8 doesn't work for Vietnamese.
I don't know where to look for additional locales. Any advice you can offer would be very welcome. I've really been held back in testing our free-software translations, not to mention using the software itself, by this inability to input my language in X11.

Thankyou both for your replies. I'll answer them in order:
First I want to clarify the situation in native
    MacOSX apps (e.g. Safari).
If I select US key layout from the Input Menu, then
option-` (and four more similar combinations)
act as dead-keys. In Safari (TextEdit, etc.), I get è
(e grave) by hitting option-` and then
    e.
Yes. The same thing happens with the Australian English keyboard.
When I select Vietnamese key layout, then the
following twelve keys act as dead keys:
They're not dead keys. They simply input different characters from the English layout.
    a e i o u y [ ] 1 2 3 4 (character printed
    on the key-tops)
If I hit one of them, they produce the following
    characters (Vietnamese vowels?)
    a e i o u y ư ơ ă â ê ô (character they
    actually produce)
    Correct.
and await the next key. If I hit one of the
number keys 5-9 here, then I can add an accent to
those vowels. For example, in order to input è
(e grave), I must hit e and then 5, NOT
5 and then e. On your Mac, if you want
to input è into Safari, do you hit 5e or
    e5?
I'm using a different layout. The default Vietnamese layout for OSX originally was a decomposed Unicode layout, which caused me a lot of problems. So I installed additional precomposed layouts. My current layout is TCVN: the only difference is that for that layout, you hit the dead key before the vowel, not after. However, I have also tried the default layout with X11, with the same results. I don't know if the default layout has been changed to precomposed Unicode yet, but I'm used to the TCVN one now, so I stick with that.
If you open Keyboard Viewer from the Input
Menu (if it is not in your Input Menu, then you can
add it via International System Preferences), the
dead keys will be indicated by orange color. It will
be interesting to keep Keyboard Viewer open when you
    type.
Now let's see the situation in X11.
(I assume you have enabled "Use the system keyboard
layout" in the Preferences of X11)
    Yes.
In my Mac, if US key layout is selected and the
locale is set to en_US.UTF-8, I can enter è
just as in Safari (by hitting option-` then
e), at least in xterm (It seems that luit must
be turned off by 'xterm +lc' (see xterm man page for
the option +lc)). xev tells that the keysym sent by
    option-` is 'dead_grave'.
If Vietnamese layout is selected, then no dead keys
are available. This is not a surprise, because no
keySyms like “dead_e” are defined in X11 and so the
key e can't act as a dead key. If I hit
    e then 5, I just get e` (e and a stand
    alone `).
Ah. It's a lack of definition in X11. That's really useful to know.
In your post, the keysym sent by the number key 5 is
    just a space:
    state 0x0, keycode 31 (keysym 0x20, space),
    same_screen YES,
In my mac, it is a simple grave:
    state 0x0, keycode 31 (keysym 0x60, grave),
    same_screen YES,
I don't know where this difference comes from. I'm
using a third party keyborad but it is recognized as
a US keyboard by the OS.
Yes, interesting. X11 may read the order of input slightly differently with different layouts.
Anyway, neither my Mac nor your Mac can't input è
    into X11.
    Yes.
I'm not sure whether there is a simple option (or
trick) which enables dead keys in X11 with Vietnamese
key layout. But as the last resort you can modify
keymap by yourself. For example, please create a file
'mykeymap' (or whatever name you like) and put the
    following line to it
    keycode 31 = dead_grave percent 5 percent
This will mean modifying it for all four dead keys. I will try that.
    and run xmodmap as
    $ xmodmap mykeymap
Then you can use the number key 5 as a dead key; you
may input è by hitting 5 and then e.
If you manually modify the keymap, then you should
disable "Use the system keyboard layout" in the
Preferences of X11; otherwise the keymap will be
overwritten by the system when you switch the key
    layout.
    OK.
I guess you can add four more lines to mykeymap so
that number keys 5-9 act as dead keys. You may find
    the necessary keysym names in
    /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose. The
current keymap can be listed by
    $ xmodmap -pke
Thankyou. I will try all that, then report back. Certainly it seems that the international features of X11 need work. Vietnamese is one of the languages/input methods which comes with OSX, so it's not exactly uncommon or esoteric to Apple. However, they don't enable it in Appleglot, either, and I've had an open bug on that for years now.
    Jun then said:
It seems that luit must be turned off by 'xterm +lc'
Maybe I was wrong. You don't need +lc.
    Tom added:
I notice that copy/paste from TextEdit works, so it's not a font problem. I >suppose that a custom keyboard that created all the required characters via >a single keypress would work ok, but that is not very practical, right?
No, since there are 72 vowels in total, and we use all the rest of the Roman alphabet except F, W and Z. It would have to be a very large keyboard! The dead-key system makes it all manageable on a standard keyboard.
Are you sure that your X11 has access to a font which contains all the >precomposed Vietnamese characters? I don't think you can rely on the OS X >fonts for this, but there may have to be a font in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts >or someplace similar.
After you first commented on this, I put all the Dejavu and URWVN fonts into that location. Dejavu is the best of the current free-software pan-Unicode fonts in displaying Vietnamese, due to keen attention by their developers to my feedback. URWVN is a package of GPL fonts designed for Vietnamese. After putting them in that location, I restarted X11, even restarted the Mac, but no change in my problem. I think the fonts are accessible, but X11 can't recognize the keypresses calling those characters.
You have said more than once (or the msg keeps being tacked on to the end of the thread):
Perhaps this fellow would know how to port this program to Darwin?
