ATTN: Question for Graphic designers using new 24" aluminum imac

I am about ready to replace my 2001 G4 867 Quicksilver. Are you happy with the screen and overall build quality? I mainly use photoshop, indesign and illustrator in that order.
The Mac pro is now too expensive an option for my budget. I read a lot about screen discolorations but would like some feedback from pro users who have adopted this machine.

Well I'm a graphic designer and student. Recently purchased a 20" aluminium iMac, fantastic piece of kit, and despite being smaller compared to the 24", the resolution is still really high and there is lots of workspace. Many seem to recommend the 24" though and part of me wishes I had got a larger screen instead, but the 20" size is actually better than fine.
The only problem is, since release last year, all the latest iMacs are having display issues. I didn't know anything about this before purchasing my iMac and expected a higher quality from Apple. They all seem to have gradient issues where the bottom half of the screen is abnormallly brighter in the 20", the left side is brighter in the 24", and also some reported yellowing in the corners. Apparently, more people have reported problems with the 20" than the 24" though.
If you look through these forums, you will struggle to find one person who actually has an iMac without this issue.
Unfortunately, for graphic design use (eg Photoshop, Indesign, etc), the iMac's current state is useless. I am writing this on my current iMac and it is impossible to see a full solid colour across the screen at any angle, no good for design use!
Not sure what I'm doing with mine yet, refund or get Apple to fix it...

do any graphic designers use this display?
hows the color matching?
whats your experience with it?
thank you

got my dual LED and mac pro setup a few days ago and have been doing a lot of work in photoshop and a little in final cut and colour.
For me personally, the gloss is not an issue and I don't understand why some 'professionals' claim they cannot use glossy screens, just light your room properly and its no problem at all. As far as colour reproduction goes, the screens seem amazing to me. I am not a 'true' professional- ie have not worked with correctly color calibrated screens for 25+ years etc as some people bashing these displays seemingly have, but for graphic and web design the display is perfect for me. What I think a lot of people forget when they argue about how important it is for a screen to be colour accurate for design work is that every single screen is different, some completely different to others - so although it is important to be able to view 'true' colours, on the majority of users screens the graphics won't be reproduced how they looked on the designers screen. Thats my experience with web design at least.. Hope this was of some help.

• I think to bye imac for graphic design use purpose. kindly guide me. Is iMac best for me ?

i think to bye imac for graphic design use purpose. kindly guide me. Is iMac best for me ?

Hello artistsagar,
The word best is always subjective. It is all a question of your needs, your working practice, your available space; I could go on.
A Mac (probably a 27"one) may well be perfect. Good size screen, easily understood basic functions and a huge number of recommended programs. Just Google Mac graphic design to see what is available.

• New 20" aluminum imac - small dvd's

Will the new 20" Aluminum iMac's play the small DVD's that you use in the camcorders? I don't want to stick it in and never get it out.

No. Slot-loading drives can not use them, nor other odd-shaped discs. Getting the disc out would be the least of your troubles, as damage to the drive may occur.
According to the iMac's User Guide (page 50): "Use only a standard-size disc."
If you must use them get a tray-loading external drive.

• Looking for test demo of new 21/27 iMac in-house in Carmel, IN

Hi all.
I am looking for someone that might be willing to let my parents see and use their 21"/27" iMac at there house for a little while. They absolutely DETEST the new glossy screens, at least how they look when they are the store. But their house isn't a white box with dozen of light sources producing massive amounts of glare. So short of buying one and returning it, and all the hassle thereof, I thought there might be a kind soul out their willing to help.
They desperately need a new computer (iMac G5 with possibily failing drive), and an iMac would be a perfect choice if it wasn't for the glossy screen. If they can't live with that, then it'll have to be a Mini + third-party monitor.
They live in Carmel, IN. Please email me back if your willing so we could arrange a meet.
-doug

I see what you're saying. You want the computer at your house to see how it works in the environment. That's a pretty tall order. But you might do as Dave suggests and go to Keystone At The Crossing and talk with the people there. They may be able to hook you up with a loaner or something.
My iMac sits facing west and there's window that's approx. 6'x12' behind me and 99% (okay I made that percentage up) I don't see any glare whatsoever. 100% it's not a bother (that one I didn't make up). I would assume as you did that the Apple Store is about as bad as it could get for a glossy screen. Bright, lots of white.

• Any print graphic designers using a MacBook?

My 15" Powerbook 800 is so painfully slow now, and the battery connection stinks- it always shuts off if not plugged in (replaced the battery 3 times, and Apple no longer sells the original battery). So I think it's time for a replacement- but I don't want a laptop this large again- too much to travel with! So seems my choices now are the 13MacBook or 15MacBook Pro. I mainly use InDesign, Illustrator, and a little of Photoshop (CS2). Wondering if there are other designers out these with working experience of the new laptops. I know that adobe is not yet Universal. If I maxed out the Macbooks RAM would it perform well with CS2? As I understand it, that graphics card is really more important for 3D graphics, gaming, etc- none of which I do...
In any case, I dont think I can wait another year to purchase (when CS3 comes out), this laptop isn't going to make it that long!
thanks for any advise!

I know it seems this question has been answered, but I get such conflicting answers from all sources (here it seems MacBook is the answer vs. in the Mac store MacBookPro is only answer vs. from my "resident experts" MacBookPro is it!), that I'm going to ask it again for clarity...Question: I'm a graphic designer (print design) and use my computer primarily with the Adobe software and just a little of the imovie editing for home movies. No 3D graphics or gaming. My ideal purchase would be to buy the MacBook AND use the extra $1000 I would have spent on the MacBookPro to buy a nice monitor and keyboard setup for at home...giving me portability for my freelance design business, but a nice setup and great screen for my desktop setup. HOWEVER...if I lose significant speed or ability in those Adobe software packages (right now, I have an Illustrator file that's 60MB...tradeshow display graphics) that takes almost 10 minutes to open, save, etc. so it's a real pain) by choosing the MacBook I would definitely purchase the MacBookPro and forego the monitor and home setup. What do you all think? I understand very little about the interior workings of my Macs...I just use them, love them, and know how to run my programs on them, but when the discussion becomes technical I tend to lose the thread, but I'll do my best to keep up. P.S. I know Adobe hasn't released the CS3 stuff that will make the big difference in how those programs run, but still...which computer will they run best on when that gets released? And is it SO MUCH different that it's worth $1000 extra and no big monitor at home?

• Now can't get back to my first question for you! Hate new Firefox - how to revert?

Well, I just asked a question about bookmarks - they are lost after updating Firefox. Now can't even find them anywhere. My computer switched to Yahoo! and I want to use original Yahoo. Strongly dislike new toolbar - where is print, etc.? I can't get back to a link for my original question now, so please answer all of this here.
I really just want plain old Yahoo.
I want things like print on my toolbar.
I need my bookmarks back.
Thank-you. I need step-by-step directions; please don't just tell me to look at the Yahoo! site because I have and can't figure out how to get this stuff.

Previous versions are available here: http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/
You may also wish to back up your profile for safekeeping prior to rolling back: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles
If you roll back, you will want to change your update regime to make sure you won't automatically update against your wishes.

• What is the best desktop for graphic designers

I'm looking into buying a new computer, and I was wondering if anyone had any preference over which iMac model would be better to use as a graphic designer.
Thanks!

My personal preference is for the 27 inch screen models.
You can still install cheaper third party RAM into these iMacs.
Load up this model with the max. RAM 16 GBs.
Get the model with the fastest CPU you can afford.
If you still use CD/DVD optical media, you will have to budget for an external optical drive, also.
They are no longer built into the iMac.
Also, think about installing a faster VRAM chip if you consider the slower 27 inch model with only 512 MB of VRAM.
As far as storage, the verdict is still out on the Fusion drive, but it would make boot up and, generally, make the iMac feel faster.
I Would probably opt the larger 3 TB standard 7200 rpm hard drive, but that's just me.
Whatever you decide, you need to budget to get 3- year extended AppleCare on these iMac.
They are not as reliable as they used be and there have always been problems with them.
Havimg three years of free warranty replacement and repair is going to go a long way toward the longevity of these iMac models.
If budget is an issue, you can look at the 21 inch screen models, but I am not recommending them.
These models have no upgradeability at all any longer. They are a glued up, closed up, sealed appliance, now.
The specs are lesser, there are no option for a faster VRAM chip, and the hard drives choices for these models are the much slower 5400 rpm notebook style hard drives.
If you have to purchase one of these 21 in screen models, you can't skimp on components if you want to have this model iMac for any long term. You would need to order one with the complete 16 GBs of Apple's own RAM installed up front. Order the optional fastest CPU available for this model which is the 3.1 Ghz CPU. This is must in my opinion. And replace and order the 1 TB fusion drive to replace part of the 5400 rpm drive equation.
And, again, budget and purchase the 3- year extended AppleCare. You will, eventually, need to use this.
Good Luck on your decision!

• Licensing question for AD enterprise with new SQL Server

Hi!
We have Server 2008 R2 STD where our AD is located and it has enough User CAL's. Additionally we have Terminal server with TS licenses.
Now we're purchasing a Server 2012 where we plan to install SQL Server 2012 STD where we will install our third party program and this program is going to be used through Terminal server.
Now the question is do I only need SQL CAL's or will I have to get both SQL CAL's AND User CAL's for the new server? I'm thinking AD servers User CAL's is enough for the whole enterprise, but I'm not 100% sure and need help with this!
Thanks!

Licensing questions should be directed to trained Microsoft licensing specialists instead of a technical forum.
www.microsoft.com/licensing.
That said, SQL CALs and operating system CALs are sold separately. Talk with the vendor from whom you are purchasing your licenses. They should be able to help you sort out the CAL questions.

• System configuration question for HD editing on new system.

I've been editing in premiere for close to 9 years but have stuck mostly to DV video. I recently bought Production Premium and wanted to jump into editing HD. Here is the system I installed the Production Premium CS4 on; (I will use Premiere, AE, and PhotoShop the most)
Processor: Intel Core i7 960 CPU
CPU Speed: 3.2Ghz
CPU Cores: 4
CPU Threads: 8
L3 Cache size: 8MB
Memory: DDR3-1333 (PC3 10666) 6GB Triple Channel (I will upgrade to 24GB once the price on the 4gig chips drops)
Motherboard: Intel x58 Chipset South Bridge: ICH10R Socket 1366
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD4890 1GB (Is this OK?)
OS Drive: Capacity: 1TB WD(Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit)
Speed: 7,200 RPM
Video Drive: 2 1TB Seagate Drives in raid 0 (mobo raid)
Speed:7,200 RPM
Buffer mem: 32mb
Additional Information: 24x DVDRW Double Layer, 700-watt power supply
I have two IDE 120gig WD drives I was thinking of putting in a raid 0 for the scratch. Would this be advisable? Would the IDE configuration be quick enough for this purpose? How much space should I dedicate to scratch (do I really need the full 240gigs)?
I will buy two more 1TB Seagate Drives for more video storage. would running all 4 of the seagate 1TB drives in raid 0 be beneficial for HD editing? or should I just create a separate raid configuration for those two additional drives?
(I will backup to a network drive(s) so I want the system itself to be built for speed [without getting obscenely expensive])
What is your opinion on addition hardware such as the matrox cards for help with HD editing? (I used the RT2000 with the DV editing and it was an "adventure" to say the least to get that one working right.)
Thanks,
-Tom T.

For some general information about RAID configurations, look here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/525263?tstart=0
As long as you can stuff 2 IDE drives in your case, go ahead and use those in a raid0 for a fixed pagefile of 8 - 12 GB and set your scratch to this raid. If you want to use this array for temporary storage of downloads, etc. no problem.
The two additional disks would be used best if you create either a 4 disk raid5 to have at least some redundancy or as spearate disks. One for projects, the other one for exports and your current raid0 for media. I would not advise a 4 disk raid0 because of the chance of disk failure.
I would not use anything Matrox, better to invest that in a good raid controller, so you will profit from the performance gain with all applications, or by increasing memory.

• What size MacBook Pro is best for graphic designers?

I am entering an Emerging Media/graphic design program that requires a MacBook Pro to do my work on. Am I ok to get the 15" or do I need the 17"?

I will only add 1 thing to John Hammer1
While I canot tell you what you *must* do, I can tell you that *I would* do if 15 in was the only option based on size/weight and graphic design was the use.
I would order from Apple to get the upgrade to hi-res (1680x1050). While you can connect external display for easier working with pictures, you will not always have the external display.
Anti-glare is your call competely. It helps in open-air condiitions with direct sunlight. But some say image clarity is sacrificed in favor of dffusing the glare from the screen -- I am not sure my eyes would see the difference, but I am old and blind and do not care as much about it. But I truly have only rumor and innuendo on this subject.
As John Hammer1 said, analyze any "I woud do <this>" advice objectively and do not care about hurting feelings.

• I have a question for people who use cocoppa?

If you use cocoppa I have a question. I see that there are icons on the app for camera, photos, music & messages on cocoppa. Like the actually iPods apps that you didn't download & were on there when you got it. But when you get to the part where it wants to know what app you want to use it for & you search one of those 4 I can't find it. Can you just not get the icons for the iPods default apps or am I doing something wrong? If you've used the app & figured it out let me know how please

Like how do you get the cute app short cuts the the iPods default apps?

• Question for graphic artists about PDF Portfolios...

I'm finding it difficult to get a graphic portfolio PDF under the required 5mb without sacrifice a little too much in quality.
Could the graphic artists in the house with portfolio PDFs let us know what their Photoshop PDF export settings are? (more specifically, DPI and JPG settings)
Naturally, this is for screen. But the people opening these files who ask for portfolios in PDF format will likely have quality gear.
Thanks!

• A few questions for people with the new ipod

1. does it scratch easily?
2. is there any other way to put video on it (instead of quicktime)?
3. which is better the white or the black?
4. can you take video off it. (use it as an external hard drive for video. or is it like music where you need to download a program to remove the video? if so what program?)
thanks

1. yes so they say (had for a week now and no problems yet. I have the white one.)
2. use hand brake or pspware.
handbrake for video_ts files and pspware for all other files.
3. white see less scratches (think of a car)
4.once you go through itunes you have to use a 3rd party program, have not tried any with the video part yet.
