ATV Gen 2: I'm confused. Am I missing something?

Gen 1 enabled me to sit down at my TV and use the remote to surf hundreds of  TV networks and shows including HBO/NBC/etc...., but Gen 2 seems very limited. Many of my favorite shows and networks are no longer listed on the ATV itself (HBO, Modern Family, Good Wife, etc). Where did they go? To purchase certain content now, I must go to my computer, find the show in iTunes, purchase the show on my computer, and then use home-sharing to send it to the ATV. Am I missing something? Can I no longer surf and make all selections on the ATV directly? My computer is several rooms away from my TV, and I much prefer to surf  content on the TV. Please tell me I'm missing something simple. If this is progress, I'll definitely need to revert back to gen 1. Thanks so much to anyone who can shed some light.  -Maria

Hi mariafromnh,
Due to licensing issues between movie-makers and TV Show networks, Apple cannot show some content on the AppleTV 2; only on your Mac/PC. This is also the reverse for some movies that can only been seen in HD on the AppleTV 2 but not on your Mac/PC.
Like Michele Gardner said, you can only wait until Apple sorts this out. In the mean time, your current method is the only real way of being able to view said shows on your AppleTV. Apple removed the internal HDD and made the ATV2 an extension of your iTunes library by forcing it to be streaming-only.

  • ATV gen 1 no longer works.  iStore missing and locally stored movies pause sporadically such that it is unusable.

I read somewhere else others are having similar issues but no fix was suggested.  Any advice would help, thanks.

Last night it just started working again.  Must be something Apple did, but did not notify anyone.  Anyway, my problem is solved.

  • How to stream content from Mac or Ipad to ATV  Gen 1

I have an unlocked ATV Gen 1 ( just bought 2nd hand ) and I want to stream content from either my MacBookAir or my ( Jailbroken ) Ipad 2 to the ATV which is connected to my nice big TV.
I can view all the integral stuff in ATV and also view/listen to movies/music in Itunes.
I really want to view BBC TV which is streaming on my MBA or Ipad onto the ATV.
    How can I achieve this?
I've dabbled with Airshare ( a Cydia app ) on the Ipad but that doesn't seem to work.
Of course, I can run a HDMI cable directly from the MBA/Ipad to the ordinary TV and throw away the ATV but I want to do it wirelessly.
Surely this is achievable with ATV?
    Thx,

Mr Churchill, I assume that you are talking about "live broadcasts" when  you assert that I can't stream 'anything'?
Of course, I can 'stream' videos/music/podcasts/photos which are in my Itunes library of any of my devices to the ATV .
I'm pretty sure that I have read postings where content displayed on an IOS device can be mirrored in Audio/VDO to the ATV.
If this only realates to content contained within ITunes then confirmation will be regarded as the correct answer ( if not the one I wanted ).
    Can someone pls assist

  • ATV Gen 1uses

Does anyone know if there is a way to use an ATV Gen 1 hard disk to store photos. The Gen 1 isn't supported or mountable through iTunes anymore, but it's got a 160 Gb hard disk, and I don't want to waste the storage space.

The device is not meant to be used as storage, it is for syncing with iTunes only.

  • ATV Gen 1 - Remote is working but the ATV isn't responding?

my remote for my ATV gen 01, is connecting with the ATV as the light responds on the front when i press a comand, but the ATV isnt responding and wont move accordingly though the menu...?? help..?

Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.

  • My ATV gen 2 won't connect to the internet over a wireless BT home hub 5 network

My ATV gen 2 won't connect to the internet over a wireless BT home hub 5 network. I've recently upgraded to a BT HH5 and now I cannot airplay with my 2011-MBP, and the ATV will not connect to the iTunes store or software update.

Ok, thanks (not sure I know what you mean!). I have seen a solution that tells me to rename the two SSID's? Is that what you mean? All my devices are wireless, and all can connect to the internet except the Apple TV. Now I have disabled the 5GHz channel all devices are on the 2.4GHz channel and all work fine, including the Apple TV and airplay between my MBP and ATV.

  • Apple TV Gen 3 takes too long to load 15,000 photos. Do I need to go back to ATV Gen 1?

I just purchased Apple TV (Gen 3) It takes too long to load my over 15,000 photos for viewing.   This was never a problem with my ATV (Gen 1).  Do I need to go back to ATV Gen 1?

Do you have a technical question?
What have you done to troubleshoot?
Typically issues like this are related to the local network. First thing would be to try ethernet, if on wifi. Make sure router is up to date. Reboot ATV, router.
You can go to istumbler (Mac) or netstumbler (PC) to get a report of the network.

  • Can i Synch ATV Gen 1; despite factory restore?

I still like the idea of syncing my iTunes; streaming isn't a preferred option. Can i opt for syncing...
I am having problems doing that following removal of ATV from preferences and getting it back...
    Thank you,

Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can sync it back afterwards, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.

  • Does your ATV gen 1 sync with iTunes 5x??

    the title says it all:
Is your ATV (Gen1) syncing with iTunes 5x??
I'm asking because serveral folks here are having problems, and I'd like to here that their issues were isolated before taking the plunge.

  • ATV Gen 1 Hard drive gets cleared.

I Have an Apple Tv with a 160 gig Hard drive ( actually 2 of them) I keep one at home and My second one I use for the Camper or for Night shifts at work. Its a great little device for this but here is the problem I seem to get once in awhile. I had it with me at the lake and used it for about a week then the next day I went to use it but It said i had no movies, So I checked my Tv Series That I had same this they were all gone. But My photos were all still there. Why would all video just disapar for no reason ( No one changed the library setting My home Itune library was still in the general settings as only one)
This has happen 3 times no and I cant seem to find any reason it did this. Can anyone help answer this.

I seem to be having the same problem. Every time I fire up iTunes, it starts to sync with my Apple TV (again) and there is no content on the ATV. This seemed to happen after I upgraded to iTunes 10. It's driving me batty. Almost as if Apple is driving me to buy a new Apple TV.
    Any solutions?

  • Streaming movies to different ATV gen 2 units

I have 3 ATV2 units hooked up via ethernet to my home network. I have my library on my desktop computer and want to stream movies (different ones to different ATV2's) can there be 2 video/audio streams on the network at the same time?

    yes.
what content is streamed to the individual ATV's is controlled by the units themselves.

  • ATV (Gen.1) in constant boot up

Hi, I have an ATV (Gen1), which seems to have gone into a permanent “Boot up” i.e. ample light continually flashes. I have tried reseting with the remote which did not work and powering on/off with or without HDMi etc but with no luck – Any ideas?
    Cheers, Jason

Things don't seem to be too promising, you could take the Apple TV to an Applestore for diagnostics, but it sounds like a hardware failure to me.

  • No Picture on 'Resume Play' Option When Home Sharing on ATV Gen 3

Everything seems to work fine when you 'Start from Beginning' when home sharing, but as soon as I go to fast forward or 'Resume Play' if I have watched a little bit on my MBP, the screen freezes or is black.  There is sound and there will be no skipping of the sound; also, the movie loads fine, but there is no picture unless I restart from the beginning.   I can also fast forward on Netflix and Hulu Plus just fine with no picture/sound issues so I know that it isn't my internet connection.  I am on Version 5.3 (6105) with a wired connection to my router.

From iTunes Menu Advanced select -> Turn Off Homesharing
    Repeat that an every computer
The Turn On Homesharing again - Use the same ID/PW that you use / have used for purchasing songs on every computer

  • IPod 1st Gen (Touch wheel, 10GB) isn't recognized - missing software?

Recently, my 80GB video iPod decided to simply die on me, so I dug out my very first iPod, from 2001 or '02 I believe.
It turns on fine, can scroll through menus, but there's nothing on it anymore - plug it into my computer (firewire-to-firewire), and the iPod goes through a menu where there's the disc and a magnifying glass and eventually a check mark (connotating that everything's fine) - but it never docks onto the computer or shows up on iTunes.
I've SCOURED the internet for old iPod software updates, trying to find one early enough, so it can recognize it and I can restore and hopefully the problem will be fixed - but there's been SO many iPods since then, it's ancient, and no support was found anywhere.
Does anyone have a solution, or a link to the earliest of iPod updaters? I looked for documentation, but it was 9 years ago - I don't have the CD anymore or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
*In the 'About' menu on the iPod, the current version that's installed is 1.5 - don't know if that matters.
**I'm trying to connect to a 15-inch PowerBook G4 (Aluminum?), currently installed with iTunes 8

The current version of iTunes should be able to connect to even the 1st gen iPod. The one you have is 2nd gen, if it's the one with the four clicking buttons around the touch wheel. I have one of those, and although I use it as my little emergency/maintenance FireWire startup drive (because the screen failed on it), it is still recognized by iTunes on my Mac. Over FireWire, of course.
The first thing you should try is to put it into Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
Note: The procedure for your iPod is at the bottom, where it says +If you have an older iPod model without a Click Wheel+.
If that works, connect it to the computer. Hopefully it will appear both on your desktop and in iTunes. If so, use the Restore button in iTunes to erase the iPod's hard drive and initialize its software. The latest available version of the software for that iPod will be installed.
You may also want to try a different FireWire cable. It's just a regular cable, so you don't have to use the thin white one.
