ATV limited to 720p, 24 fps?

There are many H.264 camcorders nowadays like the Flip MinoHD, VadoHD, Sanyo Xacti and the Kodak Zi6 among others. By default, recording is usually at 720p at 30 fps. The ATV cannot play back these recordings without having to downgrade the format to either a lower fps or a lower resolution.
It's a pity that the ATV cannot natively play back these industry-default H.264 recordings without going through another time-consuming encoding process. It's kinda surprising that Apple did not think of such basic requirements when launching the ATV. Do you think it is impossible for Apple to upgrade via firmware for the ATV to be able to play 720p @ 30 fps?

Do you know the best program for making the adjustments you suggest? Hopefully it is simple for people like me.
I just used iTunes to convert the video produced by Mino, but it greatly reduced the file size and so I'm not sure it is the best one.
I really wouldn't worry too much that the overall file size has reduced, h264 will allow this in respect of many videos without any significant loss of quality. As for which application to use, the inbuilt itunes converter would be the easiest, but QT Pro, mpegstreamclip and a number of other applications may provide a slightly better output.

ditto,
TV shows and movies are RECORDED at 24fps, so (apart from home movies) what's the point of playing at 30fps ??
When you watch TV in a NTSC format (30fps) frames are repeated to increase the frame rate.
TV Shows are mostly recorded at 25/30 fps (depending on location).
The point of playing at 25/30 fps is to avoid changing the frame rate and introducing judder.
Non TV movies are recorded at 24 fps and when played on NTSC tv they are output at 30 fps for broadcast, that isn't quite the same as going from 30 to 24 fps. When played on PAL TV they are simply played at 25 fps, there is no conversion the video and audio are simply speeded up.

.....Have you ever tried encoding a recording from a MiniDV camcorder? It's such a pain. The Flip and those those other H.264 camcorders are going to be big and Apple cannot afford to ignore this.
It isn't a case of ignoring such devices but of working within the limitations of the Apple TV's hardware.
I think the general idea is that people who work with video on their computers don't simply stick their recordings onto the tv without editing it. Conversion will then simply become a part of outputting an edited project.

  • Which HD camcorder is best for Apple TV?   Limited to 720p @ 24fps?

I am considering the Sony HDR-TG1 camcorder. It is extremely portable and takes respectable 1080i videos (30fps only).
I know the Apple TV supports 1280x720 (720p) playback at 24fps. My question is, how do you get home HD videos into this format, considering that most HD camcorders record at 30fps?
My understanding is that you cannot effectively go from 30fps to 24fps without the video playback becoming unnatural. Is that true? Are there other options? I don't want to step down to 960x540 (540p) just because that's the only way to playback 30fps videos on the Apple TV.

Personally I wouldn't bother unless you want that 24 fps look. technically 720p @ 24 fps has about 30% more information than 540p @ 30 fps, but I challenge you to spot the difference. If you pause the picture on your computer monitor you might just see that one is softer than the other, but is that how you are going to watch your movies.
You might also want to consider that your camera takes video at 1080 lines of resolution, downscaling to 540 is a simple matter of sampling 2 lines into one, downscaling to 720 lines of resolution involves a complicated sampling process that doesn't always give you the quality you might expect in comparison.
Here in PAL land we are lucky enough that the tv also accepts 720p @ 25 fps, however as imovie is much easier to use when exporting at 540p this is what I do, I see no visible improvement by spending additional time messing around with quicktime settings.
Oh and don't forget because 720p has about 30% more information, in order to fit it into the same file size as 540p it needs to be compressed that much more.

  • ISight video recording became limited to 15 fps?

From time to time I record videos with my built-in iSight camera. I used to do it using iMovie, then Quicktime and Photobooth lately.
However, I noticed that frame rate in all my recent recordings do not exceed 15fps. Photobooth does the worst job -- it records at 7-10 fps, Quicktime 7 records at 12-13 fps, iMovie -- at 15 fps. I even changed iMovie video recording settings to NTSC to achieve 30 fps, but -- no luck. Stuck at 15 fps.
I have tonns of my earlier recordings done at 30 fps. I don't know when exactly it happend, but I believe around the time I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
Is there a way of getting iSight recording back to 30 fps?
    Thanks,

    Welcome to Discussions, Eugene (edugaev)
You seem like an experienced user, so I will give you some suggestions for your consideration while you troubleshoot your problem. Once you have found the root cause of the trouble, even if it is not automatically resolved, you will have identified what needs to be fixed. If you need clarification or help on any of the following suggestions, I will try to offer more details in response to your specifics.
    (1) You are wise to continue test with multiple apps to see if the problem is system wide or application specific. Before continuing, I suggest you also test in another user account to eliminate the possibility that this issue is user-specific.
    (2) Try turning on some more the light. The idea for this came from the fact that Apple's article entitled Sight's video "stutters" in low light when I turn it on
      http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2264
says iSight reduces frame rate in low light.
    More info: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3097
    (3) Be sure you have not increased processor loads with File Vault, multiple applications in a new workflow, or added Login Items. Also, with "tonns of ... earlier recordings", be certain you are not running short of free space on your disk.
    (4) If nothing there leads to a fix, because you think the issue began upgrading you Mac OS, if you use third party hardware that requires software installation (mouse, keyboard, A/V interface, etc.,) or software (including Microsoft Office or Exchange, plugins such as Perian, Flip4Mac, etc.,) check their support sites to see if any of them have known-issues with 10.6.2.
Perhaps you merely need to update the software or drivers in order for your third-party system components to be compatible with 10.6.2
Uninstall any that are currently known to be incompatible with your system.
    (5) If your problem persists and your system has no third-party components, or at least none that require updating for OS X 10.6.2, backup all important data and apply the 10.6.2 Combo Update (with permissions repairs before AND after the update).
Then test whether your problem persists.
    (6) If your problem persists, reinstall Snow Leopard. Be sure to repair permissions before and after installing.
Once you have reinstalled SL and apply the latest current Combo Updater with permissions repairs between each step and after updating.)
Do not reinstall any third-party apps until you have tested your iSight's function. When iSight is working properly again, you can reinstall your third-party apps again, Install only one third party app at a time, and test it thoroughly before installing another so you can tell if one of them causes problems with your system.
    (7) If the problem persists, the problem may be caused by a software problem outside the Mac&OS that you cannot find. Then only fix I know for that is to zero your disk and do a clean install of SL to see if you can resolve the problem yourself before seeking help from an Apple  Service Provider.

  • Connecting ATV to SP4805 Projector

Has anyone had any success connecting AppleTV to Screenplay SP4805?  I have spent several hours to no avail: tried all settings, also flashed the 4805 to latest firmware 1.3.2.  The projector does not recognise any signal from the 4805.  I have set the output to 720p which I know should work.  I am using an HDMI lead with a HDMI-F to M1DA-M adaptor which works perfectly with the signal from my DVD player.  Has anygone got any suggestions?
    thanks,

Just checked the 4805 specification sheet (link):
COMPATIBILITY: Component and RGB HDTV (720p, 1035i, 1080i). DVI with HDCP for digital video and encrypted digital video. Component EDTV (480p, 576p progressive scan), Component, Composite and S-Video standard TV video (480i, 576i, composite SCART with adapter, NTSC, NTSC M 4.43, PAL: B, G, H, I, M, N; SECAM: M).
so Alley_Cat: yes, the 4805 should be HDCP compliant.
I wonder if the problem is therefore the HDMI cable or the HDMI-M1 adapter but as I said above, both work with output from my HD DVD player.
I even preset the output from the ATV (AppleTV) to 720p in case the Auto setting was preventing a handshake.
    Anyone else got any suggestions?

  • TV does not display 1080p with ATV 3

Just bought the ATV3. I have a 32" Westunghouse that supports 1080p with a native resolution of 1920x1080. The specs are here: http://bit.ly/PBp9eo. The ATV only displays 720p. I have a dvd player connected to the same TV and it displays in 1080i. Can someone explain to me why I can't 1080i/p via the ATV3?
    Thanks

I figured it out. ThenTV has two HDMI ports, switching the ATV from HDMI-2 to HDMI-1 allows the ATV to display 1080p.

  • EDID Limitation for iMac 27 inch (Really Advanced Question)

I need a display engineer/programmer to answer my question: is it possible for Apple to set the EDID of 27in iMacs to accept 1080p rather than just 1440p/720p, is it even possible? And if it is possible, would it be a software-based (ex: flashing firmware) upgrade or a hardware-based upgrade? Please, no n00b answers. Appreciate the help.

I am not the engineer that you requested, but I think that you are missing the boat with the question. The 27" iMac already accepts 1080p. Any new Mac with a mini-DisplayPort can connect with the 27" iMac with a simple and inexpensive m-DP to m-DP cable and drive the iMac's display at its full resolution, 2560x1440 pixels.
So if this is a bassackwards way of inquiring about why an XBox or some other device is limited to 720p, it is because the adapter (~US$150) used limits the resolution to 720p. If you use a scaler (~US$299), which has its own graphics chip, instead of an adapter, then it can drive the iMac's display at 1080p.

  • New Software no 1080i option only 720p

Hi can someone help and confirm please?
I got the new software download over night and I now find that the output from the box is limited to 720p. The old software had an option for setting to 1080i but that seems to have disappeared from the menu options. Is that the case please? I am finding the 720p output picture quality to my 40" screen really poor in comparison to the old 1080i
Thank you in advance for your help

As Zulu said the option is there.

  • Troubleshooting Exporting Videos using QuickTime X, to an Apple TV Format.

    Hi every one!
Here is my problem, when exporting an .avi file to itunes, using QuickTime X, depending of the .avi file it seems, I can only have the iPhone Format Choice or (and it's the first time since 2 years) the Apple TV format available at last.
The .avi Files, that I have tried in the past, where all around 700 MO, all with all most the same settings.
I'm going to buy an Apple TV soon, but I would like to be sure that every file that I will export using QuickTime X, to iTunes in the Apple TV format will work.
Any idea why it's random like that?
Any tips to help me with?
Attached to this post, a Screenshot of my problem.
    Thanks!

I checked Hand Brake and the Wiki of it... I have to say that I'm a little bit lost in the settings when you export it to an Apple TV 2, or as an Apple Universal Format.... Which would olso work on an ATV 2...
What would be the best quality/settings that the Apple TV 2 would accept flowlessly?
Newer devices are backwards compatible with older device compression settings but older devices are not forwards compatible with the latest device compression settings. The original iPod video device was limited to 320x240 displays at 30 a max of 30 fps with an H.264 data rate of less than 1000 Kbps. The software was then upgraded a year later to support 640x480 display files at 30 fps and allowed H.264 data rates of 1700 Kbps/MPEG-4 data rates of 2500 Kbps. From then on, the devices have be continuously upgraded to handle larger and larger display at various frame rates with the same or greater data rates. For instance, the original TV device was limited to 720p video at 24/25 fps but only 540p (960x540) at 30 fps. To be completely universal, a file must be encoded for the oldest device that can play it. All newer devices can play these older files but usually do so by scaling the original file to the larger display size reducing their playback quality. On the other hand, the latest HD compressed files have data rates that exceed the playback capabilities of the older devices so these older device cannot play HD compressed files for newer devices. Think of it like the difference between a CD player and a BD player. Most BD players can play BDs, DVD, SVCDs, VCDs, and CDs but a CD player won't play VCDs, SVCDs, DVDs, or BDs.
As to the best video settings for any particular device, they would be the largest ecoded settings at the highest frame rate and higest data rate that the device can play. This willl provide the best video quality playback for the particular device being used. All lesser encode matrices, lessened frame and/or data rates potentially reduce your video playback quality but will still play. If your system includes DD 5.1 audio plyaback quality, then the best audio playback would be from a file that also contains an AC3 DD5.1 audio track. However, the device will also play an AAC DD Pro Logic 2, Stereo AAC, or Mono AAC audio track with decreasing audion source directionality. I prefer having both audio tracks available.
You seem to be missing the point that what plays back best on one device may not be the best playback settings for another device. You really need to read the specs for the device you plan to use. These specifications will give you the maximum acceptable settings for your device. All lesser settings will play on the device but with reduced audio and/or video quality. You can encode everything as a 320x240 H.264/AAC video file and it will play back on all devices. But the playback would only be "best" on the original 5th generation video iPod with the original software and "less than best" for all other devices marketed since then. In short, compare the secifications for all of the devices you plan to use the same file on and use the pre-set option for the device having the lowest setting spesifications if the specifications differ. However, as already stated, all "current" mobile device now support the mimimum 720p 30 fps Main Profile 3.1 encode preset (with all of the A5 chipped devices now maxed at 1080p 30 fps High Profile 4.1). Therefore, I will repeat one last time, I prefer the TV2 preset which supports all current mobile, iPad, and TV2 devices. If you have older "classic" devices, which you want the same file to play on, then use the preset compatible with that oldest device as your "universal" preset.

  • Apple TV  - HDMI or Component

Please forgive me If the issue I have raised is one that has been discussed at length previously. I am new to all things Apple and new to discussion forums.
I am now the owner of an Apple TV.
I intend to use it with my Panasonic HD ready plasma. However, I am currently using all three of the HDMI ports - A Humax freesat HD PVR, a Panasonic BD player and a PS3. Of which I use the PS3 the least.
What connection is the best for Apple TV? HDMI or Component?
Should I simply connect the Apple TV via Component - without having to reconnect anything else.
Or should I hook up the Apple TV via HDMI and re-connect the PS3 via component?
    Sorry for being a muppet!
Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

If you have a 1080p24 television (a.k.a. TrueHD), then I would advise keeping the PS3 on HDMI and using component for the AppleTV. The reason for this is that the PS3 can play movies and games at full 1080p, whereas the HD content on the AppleTV is heavily compressed in comparison and limited to 720p. As far as I can see, the only benefit you get by running the AppleTV in 1080p mode is when viewing high resolution photos.
I have also had many problems using the AppleTV in 1080p mode with an HDMI cable and my Sony Bravia 1080p24 LCD television. When I try and play a video, I get a blank screen until I reset the ATV. The only way I have managed to prevent this from happening is by using a component cable and switching to 720p mode.

  • What is the resolution?

I am wondering what resolution the new AppleTV will support. I have't looked into the old one because it wasn't HD capable.

While the resolution is still 720P HD as it was with the original Apple TV, the new Apple TV does support up to 30 fps instead of being limited to 24 fps. At 30 fps (actually 29.97 fps), you can watch many HDTV shows that are natively broadcast at that frame rate. If you only watch movies, 24 fps is sufficient and either Apple TV should work well.
Don't expect 1080P at 60fps any time soon lest the cost of the box increases.

  • Macbook air airplay 1080P?

Can mid-2011 Macbook Air 1080P airplay mirror to ATV3 at 1080P?  I have been having trouble with this.  The video does not take up the full screen on my TV through the ATV, since the "best for airplay" or "scaled" resolution options only offer 720P or, at max 1440x900 which is the native LCD resolution.

Airplay does support 1080p. Unfortunately,  airplay mirroring on supported Macs is limited to 720p video streaming. Since Macbook Air's do not have a dedicated graphics card like Macbook Pro 15", it can not take advantage of its graphics capability and stream at full 1080p resolution.

The game presents an ultra-quality display, 60 Frames Per Second (FPS)
    FPS: Average frames is at:
    Frames: 3859 - Time: 76828ms - Avg: 50.229 - Min: 43 - Max: 56
The comments of the game for your reference:
There are many types of missions that can be chosen from the America’s map.
Street racing, high-speed collision, breakaway from police, sky jumps, zigzagging, etc… make the game quite dynamic.
Now, when it comes to multi-player matches, the performance has exceeded expectations. Perhaps, it is the killer Ethernet that’s working the magic. Thus, this game is highly recommended if you have the right rig.
The downside is that the display intricacy is not as refined as GTA V and in addition, the game FPS is limited at 60 FPS. However, the overall gaming flow and performance is better than good.
The user's comment for using MSI Gaming 5 motherboard and 960 graphics card:
(The following commends are translated from user’s article, does not represent the viewpoint of MSI) ^^
Recently, MSI GTX 960 just launched so the initial price tag is still adjustable.
According to the current product line, it seems like this GPU is going to replace 750Ti. So once all the stocks (750Ti) at the store empties, we are most likely to see a price drop on GTX960.
Once the price hits the sweet spot, it’s time to try out GTX960 SLI’s performance.
The CP value on MSI GTX960 and GAMING 5 MB is pretty high. But the XSplit software that comes with the product is a bit annoying since the authentication steps are divided into 2 parts to go through for using it.
    Enough said, anyways, GAME ON!

NVIDIA 960 card  + GAMING 5 motherboard = best bundle for budget gaming!
it would be nice to see more testing of hardware-demanding games!
