ATV Not Showing Up in iTunes Devices

Well, I've read other postings, tried things and no joy. After either upgrading to ATV 2.1 and iTunes 7.7, the two quit talking. I've confirmed the ATV connects fine with the network, I can ping the thing from my computer and it responds (no conflicting IP addresses), the "look for appletvs' checkbox is checked, I've done the power down trick and reinstalled iTunes fresh, and have gone to add the computer library to get the pin number (except there's no place to enter it when I get into iTunes.)
So, everythings been working pretty much perfectly for a year and now nothing. What the heck is up?

Well, after trying all the suggestions I've found on this forum, I decided to exercise my apple care plan and called tech support. I confirmed all my troubleshooting efforts with them and that I still had no ATV in my devices list. What they finally had me do was to restore factory settings and then update my ATV software one update at a time. Once I restored, my ATV immediately showed up in the devices list. I updated once (2.1) and had to tweak my firewall slightly, then it showed up again.
However, that was the last update it would let me do. The ATV had problems after updating to 2.6, so apparently they have pulled either that update or set it so mine wouldn't go any higher than 2.1. But, all's fine in ATV world again.

  • ATV not showing in the iTunes device list? Check your HTTP proxy config

Seems like many people are having trouble getting their ATV to show up in the iTunes Devices list. Here's my situation, and the root cause:
    1. I have a small network at home consisting of one LAN with a number of computers, and a gateway router that provides DHCP, DNS and HTTP (web) proxy services
    2. I found that my ATV would display in the Devices list only when the ATV and at least one Mac were isolated from the rest of my network; when I connected them back to the rest of the LAN the ATV disappeared from the Devices list (in the simplest case this isolation was a crossover cable between the Mac and ATV)
    3. when connected to the whole LAN, the ATV could successfully contact the iTunes Store (trailers, etc) but would not show up in the Devices list
    4. I could ping the ATV from the Mac running iTunes every time (i.e. I did not have a basic connectivity problem; e.g. "ping appletv.local." always worked)
    5. I started with my ATV on v1.1, when I upgraded to 2.0 and turned on the the iTunes' "Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes" option ATV always appeared in the speaker list (i.e. even when it wasn't in the Devices list)
I had gone through the Apple troubleshooting guides, with no change.
After a lot of elimination I discovered that my problem was with my web proxy settings: my Macs were configured to use my gateway router for HTTP, and it seems that iTunes connects back to the Apple TV via HTTP - these requests were sent to the proxy and rejected (as they were for an address on the inside LAN; this is the way my proxy was configured).
I fixed the problem by using a PAC file specifying my LAN as "DIRECT" (e.g. below). An alternative would have been to configure my proxy to allow connections from the LAN back into the LAN (but be careful about allowing access from elsewhere, e.g. the Internet).
Here's my PAC file: my LAN is in the 10.0.0.0/8 address space, domain *.home.lan. (iTunes seems to contact the AppleTV via it's IP address, e.g. http://10.0.0.169:3689/ript/fp-setup?fairPlayID=4a5...):
    function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
    // simple hostname
    if (dnsDomainLevels(host) == 0) {return "DIRECT";}
// match Host against local domains (w/ optional :port)
    var dom = /(127\.\d.d+.d+|.local.?|10.d+.d+.d+|.home.lan.?)(:d)?/;
    if(dom.test(host)) { return "DIRECT"; }
// All other requests go through port 8080 of proxy
// should that fail to respond, go directly to the WWW:
    return "PROXY proxy.home.lan:8080; DIRECT";
The reason the ATV was successfully appearing in the Devices list when it and a Mac were isolated from the rest of the LAN was that the Mac was unable to reach the proxy, and falling back to the 'DIRECT' connection.
Note: if you don't have basic connectivity, e.g. if ping appletv.local. doesn't work, then the above is almost certainly not your problem.

    Hi There,
I have the exact same issue going on that this person described in this thread, but with the EXCEPTION in my case being that, after I have plugged my device into my laptop and uplugged it (about 10 consecutive times), my iTunes FINALLY recognizes my iPod Touch.
This is extremely frustrating to have to go through this scenerio each and every single time I want to synch and charge my Touch. Is there any way to correct it, so that the device would be recognized immediately when I first plug it in? It used to work this way (prior to the v.10 update, most likely).
    Thanks!

  • ATV not showing up in iTunes

My ATV is not showing up in iTunes. ATV is working correctly on the television. search for ATV is set in pref of itunes. ATV shows up in choice possibility of itunes speaker choice (right bottom). Reinstalled itunes still no joy.
Any suggestions to get ATV displayed again in itunes
    Iemke

When I first hooked up my ATV, it came up under devices in iTunes, and I started syncing my videos on to it. For whatever reason it was taking ridiculously long to sync, so I figured I'd cancel and just sync a couple just to test it out. The second I changed my syncing preferences and went to click apply, the ATV disappeared from iTunes, never to be seen again. I've restored the ATV to it's factory settings, done software updates, rebooted my Mac numerous times, and still have nothing. Looks like we are all in a similar boat and any sort of help would be greatly appreciated.

  • ATV2 update / not show up in iTunes devices

Hi all of you who already are enjoying the update.
Does anyone can tell me whether the upgrade took care of the old, widespread problem of ATV not showing up or dropping from the device list in iTunes?

I left my iTunes 7.6 sync'ing overnight and throughout the day. ATV2 (MacOS 10.5.1) seems to sync much much slower than AVT1 with 10.5.2.
Anyhow, I returned from work with iTunes in some 'crashed' state: it was responsive, but the itunes store was full of incomplete images and the browse views were incorrect. No devices listed.
I went to turn on my TV connected with ATV2 to find that ATV2 then seems to flicker (renegotiate tv resolution) three times before displaying video. ATV1 did NOT do this. I recall when this (renegotiate tv resolution last night) it resulted in ATV2 reboot (eg, 'sea-of-video' movie playing) on two separate occasions. Does that mean ATV2 needs my 'energy-hog' plasma TV on the whole time while sync'ing?!?! ATV1 did not have this problem!
Then, there were no sync status on ATV2. I returned to reboot iTunes 7.6 to find that it started to sync with ATV2 and then 'devices' not listed. But, ATV2 is busy 'copying' files. When I returned to iTunes 7.6, it seems to 'restart' the sync'ing of the files ATV2 was just copying.
I'm really confused as to what the heck ATV2 is now doing with iTunes 7.6. I'm using the 'default' automatic setting ... I though of giving Apple the 'freshman try' before taking over.
ps I'm also noticing that most of the 'album/preview/poster' are is missing on ATV2 but available while on ATV1. Anyone else notices that?

  • Rented Video on ATV not showing up in iTunes

I have rented videos on my ATV with no problem and transferred them to iTunes. Now, today, a rented video on my ATV is not showing up in iTunes. Is there a setting that could have been changed?
    Any ideas?

I just spoke with Apple Tech. Apparently, you can not transfer a movie that was purchased on the appletv over to the computer. This seems odd to me, but that is the information I have just received.
i think you've been given wrong information then.
afaik, as long as the movie is not HD, you can sync them back to itunes (just the same as purchasing tv shows - and i know this works as i do it).

  • New motherboard ATV not showing up in itunes

I have a "new" computer in that the motherboard had to be replaced, along with the hard drive... I can't get my Apple TV to show in devices in itunes. In itunes prefs I have "look for apple tvs" checked. The ATV is connected to my wireless network. Any ideas how I can see my ATV in devices? I'm running OS 10.5.8 and my ATV software is up to date.

    Settings>Computers on AppleTV
The top entry is the sync library - change this and anything on AppleTV will be wiped in preparation for a new sync.
    Lower entries are streaming libraries.
The new motherboard/hard drive will be a 'different itunes library to the one you preiously used hence why AppleTv doesn't show up - you need to set it up for the 'different' computer.
Authorisation is equally as fussy - my MacMini failed so I removed the hard drive to try and deauthorise the computer, but booting from another device it knew it was a differnet machine so i couldn't deauthorise it.

  • New User: ATV not showing up in iTunes and computer/ATV uses same IP addrs

At my apartment we have a shared wifi network that has open access to everyone in the complex. I connect through a Dlink DWA-130 Wireless N USB Adapter.
The ATV connected to the network right away, but nothing would load. I got the IP address from my computer and manually put into ATV and now I'm online, but my computer can't connect. I tested the IP address ATV created and manually put it into my computer and it doesn't connect to the internet.
Should I buy a router to connect ATV to my computer and the internet connection? Why would the IP address that ATV created not work?
I have an eMAc with 10.5.6 and all the settings in iTunes are correct.
    Thanks in advance.

  • IPhone not showing up in iTunes- device driver issue?

I'm having a problem getting iTunes to recognize my iPhone. I'm running XP Pro 64-bit. I know iTunes isn't supposed to work with x64 XP, but I've had it working for months now (by doing a quick edit to the .msi installer it will install on XP). I'm using the newest iTunes 8.1 and the new 3.0 iPhone OS (yes, im on the developer program). When i plug it in windows beeps and gives me the camera wizard, but iTunes does nothing. I've tried updating the driver in device manager and choosing "i will pick the driver to install" and then picking the apple mobile device driver. i clicked "continue anyway" when it told me my face was going to melt off if i use this driver. I went to help in iTunes and ran diagnostics; everything passes on the connectivity tests, but then it tells me "one or more sync tests failed". I had it working 2 days ago with the 3.0 and iTunes 8.1. it just all the sudden stopped working. any help is greatly appreciated. i thank you in advance for your time.

If you are a registered developer - the iPhone SDK runs on an Intel Mac running OS X Leopard only, then you can visit the Developer Forum for the SDK (which isn't supported with Windows) and for the 3.0 BETA, which is for IPhone and iPod Touch app development, which requires an Intel Mac running Leopard.

  • ATV not showing in iTunes devices

Just bought my friends ATV - was working ok with his sysytem - he has done a factory restore - to V1 - i have updated to V
When I select iTunes/Preferences/Devices the ATV is not shown.
I am connected by ethernet and have also setup to connect to my Airport extreme based network - the network is recognised and i can connect to my iTunes account and i can access movie trailers, podcasts etc.
I currently stream music to 2 Airport Express's with no problems.
The ATV showsup in the 'remote speakers dialogue in iTunes.
1 of my iTunes playlists shows up on the ATV with 0songs!
Whilst streaming from the iMac i have been able to get the current track playing displayed on my TV - i don't no how?
I have run a further factory restore and upgraded gain to v3
I have run the Diagnostic test - the ATV is working normal.
I have tried to access the ATV from my other iMac - G4800MHZ does not show up.
I am using Itunes 9.02 on an iMac IntelCore Duo 2.16ghz with 10.5.8 my iTunes library is held on a Lacie USB drive.
I have tried connecting the ATV direct to the iMac's ethernet port - still does not show-up in iTunes.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks for your response,
I can now understand that my ethernet cable is wrong - but why cannot i connect via the Airport Network - clearly the iMac can See the ATV - it shows up in 'Remote Speakers".
Regarding the ports, i see the article says...
These are well-known ports used by Apple products, like iTunes. If you can use all the features of iTunes, these ports are likely already open on your firewall or NAT router.
... everything else in iTunes works OK.
But how would i go about checking that each port is open etc
I am using a netgear router.
Incidently, i have also downloaded iTunes to a Win7 laptop and still iTunes does not show?
    Thanks

  • Apple TV (2nd gen) not showing up as a device in iTunes

    Hi all,
I have this problem. The Apple TV (2nd gen) does not show up in iTunes under devices, and I really don't know why.
    Mac OSX 10.6.5
    iTunes 10.1
AppleTV 2nd gen with latest update installed
Network is a WiFi Airport Extreme (Mac and AppleTV are indeed on the same private network)
Airplay works, home sharing works fine. Remote App on iPad and iPhone works.
But the AppleTV is not showing up under devices.
I had a 1st gen AppleTV which I reverted to "factory settings" before unplugging. The 2nd gen ATV had the same name as the 1st gen at the beginning, but I changed it afterwards figuring it might be related.
Under iTunes > preferences I had the AppleTV tab. But I did read somewhere on Apple's site you have to "delete" the AppleTV from the list. So I did, and now the tab cannot be found anymore...
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you in advance.

I seem to recall though that I have seen a screenshot somewhere on the web where iTunes showed the ATV 2nd gen as a device.
Not seen that, but the old ones have a logo that look (to me) like the new one, or at least a small darker grey than they are - they show up nicely in the iPad/iPhone Remote app though
If you are right it would be huge disappointment!
I believe I am correct as I've got new/old AppleTVs connected to 3 Macs and a dual boot Mac Pro currently, and the new unit has never appearede under devices.
.... I really HATE the interface organization right now. Why on planet earth do I have to go under "devices" -> "computer" -> "music" just to play some music?
You, me and many other AppleTV 1 users. I think they'd finally got it right in 3.02 for AppleTV 1 which is a much nicer user interface. Basically now the majority of the top level columns are unused by many people who don't rent but want to playback theit iTunes media.
I firmly believe Apple see this new AppleTV as a relatively cheap accessory for iPads/iPhones/iPods to show video/photos via Airplay on your TV without using a computer.
Secondly it's a vehicle for pushing itunes Store rentals, but for the majority of worldwide users they can only get Movie rentals, and Netflix is of no use bar in a few countries (US/Canada).
I would have much more preferred that a "music" tab (it also applies to all other tabs, movies, tv series and so on) and then just a list of all "home sharing" connected computers from which I could pick the one where the music is stored. Or even, and being Apple it surprises me they didn't implement it, just the list of the available music on my network, with a little tab indicating in which computer it is located.
Yes that would make absolute sense - a dynamic list of available content based on connected libraries that changes as new libraries appeared on/left the local network.
The new menu organisation is quite shoddy to me, ut many users new to AppleTV like it and rave about the devices not knowing what the old one could do - it's a good device don't get me wrong, but I still prefer the older units except for their power consumption and the fact I feel they are more likely to fail due to their high temps and mechanical hard drives.
But here I'm venturing FAR off topic.
    Don't think so, it's a valid comment.
    Use this:

Thank you for your help anyway. I wait for confirmation of somebody else just to make sure...
    Fair enough.

  • Apple TV won't connect to iTunes and does not show up in my devices list in iTunes.

My older model Apple TV won't connect to iTunes and does not show up in my devices list in iTunes.  I have two Apple TVs in my house and I can't imagine that this is part of the problem but I mention it just in case.  My other Apple TV is brand new and it connects to iTunes just fine.  I've tried most of the "fixes" and one says to Force Sync but I can't since Apple TV isn't in my device list.  Another "Fix" said to Navigate the Apple TV to Settings --> Downloads --> Check for Downloads, but when I tried that there was no option for "Downloads" under the Settings Heading.  I'm at a loss.  Please help.  Could this be an issue with too many authorized devices?  We have three iPads, two iPhones, laptop, desktop, two Apple TVs, and an iPod and most of them are syncing the same music playlists and whatnot...  have I run out of rope?

hi, just posting to everyone in general..its not you, or your apple tv, it is itunes.
ok, ive had the exact same issues for weeks now, as with everyone i had done the lastest upgrade and no longer could see/sync my gen 1 appleTV.........so, i removed the upgrade and went back to the prev version, even though it was showing in my prefs under appleTV, it still wouldnt show in the side panel under devices....i gave up.
This week i was determined to get it to work!  So i started from scratch, totally removed itunes and started back with version 9 and upgrade each version from there, i had no luck, ic clicked find appleTvs but it wouldnt....however i just d/l version 9.2.0.61 and BINGO!. No sooner has it opened and up popped the side panel devices list, showing my appleTV..all ready to be synced etc. I immediately panicked of course haha..and set it all up and its working perfectly.
...Only catch now is that this older version will not be compatiable with my iphone, which i do keep music on...seems we cant win. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr   this will be the same for all the latest apple products.
Apple needs to allow more than one version of itunes per pc OR perhaps they could get their act together and include all of the millions of APPLETV GEN1  owners in there latest upgrading..after all, THEY made the product and THEY do sell the movies/tv shows, perhaps they could stop making all the upgrade all about the music only!......on which i might add why not incluse movies/tv shows in icloud! yet another upgrade that should be included in the APPLETV  GERNERATION 1!..yes we do  still exist!
at the very least, im happy ive managed to get all my movies etc onto the apple tv, where ill keep them and from now on d/l directly onto my apple tv. I usually d/l to my laptop and then send them to the appletv but while trying to get all this sorted i did a test, i d/l a movie  using my appletv hoping it would somehow let itunes "find" it and getting it to show up in my device list, but it didnt work,  however it did sync/send the movie to itunes..  so at least i could save a back up copy.
good luck trying, as i said this has been weeks and this is the only solution ive found so far....and going through these forums its obviouse its itunes thats the issue, NOT Our apple tvs.

I can't synch my iPhone with iTunes because the device does not show up in a device window when I plug it in...it's missing in action and thus I'm not able to add any content from the iTunes to my iPhone, e.g. podcasts.   All the instructions on synching start with "find your device in the device window".  But what if you have no device window?

Missing "message" from above: The iPad "DGMTR" is synced with another iTunes library on DGMTR's MacBook Pro. Do you want to erase this iPad and sync with this iTunes library? An iPad can be synched with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iTunes library.
I thought the libraries were the same.
