ATV overheating since Take 2

So I have a new problem. ATV always ran hot, but ever since the Take 2 update, I have to unplug it every other day or so and let it sit all day to cool it back down, or i lose video while watching it. The video will scramble and then the screen goes black, then blinks on, and then off again repeatedly. Audio never glitches though.
This is completely new since Take 2, as I've had my ATV since 1.0. It sits on top of the tv, not enclosed at all, so ventilation shouldn't be an issue. The TV is a large rear projection (65"), and it vents out the back, so cooling SHOULDN'T be a big deal. Anyone else had this kind of issue?

I have not had this issue...yet. But I have to say it is foolish of Apple to construct this thing w/o any kind of ventilation at all. Heat = death for hard drives. You're looking at a significantly shorter lifespan for an aTV when it 1) runs this hot all the time and 2) has no off switch.

  • Overheating Since Mountain Lion

I have 13" MacBook pro, that has startyed overheating since Mountain Lion uodate.
Its to the point where its too hot to have on my lap and the area abouve the F keys is getting really hot.
    Any one else getting this?

    Dennis,
I bought my Macbook in June 2012 and it was running hot the whole time. A week or so ago they added an update which helped fix this dramatically. Now I upgraded to Mountain Lion and the overheating is back (techincally it's not overheating but if it's uncomfortable to have on your lap, it's too hot right)?
One work around I have done until they release the Mountain Lion patch update like the did the Lion one a week ago is install smc Fan Control. Basically by defauly the fan runs at 2000RPM and this allows you to increase that minimum. I have set it to 4000RPM and there is very minimal audible difference and it is bringing the core temparature down for the most part all of the time. You can go higher but I think thats overkill.
smc Fan Control is free, after you install it, it resides in your notification area in the top right (this is where you can change settings etc)
Hope this helped you as I know personally how annoying these overheats can be.

  • HT5706 How do I update my software on my Apple TV if the television isn't supporting my ATV anymore since the last update. Can I update through iTunes?

Since I last updated ATV my own tv no longer supports my ATV. On my HDMI channel it is picking up different Hz levels ranging from 18 Hz to 180 Hz when ATV is plugged in. A few times some white lines have appeared on the screen as though it is trying to connect. I have tested a different HDMI chord and that didn't have any effect and I've reset my Wi-if router. My tv still supports my bluray DVD player through the HDMI port. I want to update my ATV as I think that will fix the problem, but I can't see the menu on the tv to do so. Is there any way I can do this via iTunes or iPad?

What TV are you using? Did you try switching ports?
Yes, you can connect to iTunes via micro usb. It will restore the system and install the latest firmware.

  • IMac overheating. Take imac in store?

I've had my 27" iMac since 2010, after 2 years I suddenly noticed heat. It heats up so much it makes me paranoid.
I have smc fan control installed, and it helps, but I know that upping the fan speeds can risk the life span of my hardware (fan). So I use it conservativly. I'll probably buy a desk-fan next week. It seems like a quick solution to a worrying problem. Do all apple hardware end up with this problem? is it dust? Blocking the vents. General ware and tear? I don't really want to shoot/suck air into places that might mess up the computer.
Is it worth taking into the store or will I just be told to change the fan speed. Can they fix it, because it never used to do this...

I too have an imac and while i can download music from itunes store, cannot download podcasts - nothing happens and eventually 3150 error.

  • Powebook overheating since Applecare superdrive replacement

    Hello all -
I'm posting this question in discussions because I can't seem to find an email address by which I can contact Apple support directly.
My Powerbook G4 (12", 1.33GHz) is overheating regularly, even when the Energy Saver control panel is set to Better Energy Savings. By overheating I mean that the machine gets hot to the point that it goes to sleep, even though the fan is running at full speed. The Powerbook never overheated before the computer was sent in to Applecare have its superdrive replaced in June. I believe that something went wrong in the reassembly of the computer, but the computer is now out of its Applecare extended support period. With whom should I speak to try to get this resolved?
    Cheers,
    Alex
Here's the complete story, for anyone who's interested.
At the end of May, I noticed that the superdrive in my Powerbook was failing - something inside had come loose and discs physically would not load. I finally got around to dropping my Powerbook off during the middle of June - right before my wife and I left for an extended vacation. After I got back to the US, two months later, I started using the powerbook again, and noticed that it was shutting down randomly due to (what seemed to be) overheating. However, I attributed the behavior to bad web page design (certain web pages with a lot of advertisements have always made the machine run warm - I figured that something had changed on the pages which caused the machine to overheat). But now, after about a month of using the Powerbook, I've realized that all sorts of programs which in the past ran without any problems now cause the laptop to overheat. Backup software, DVD software, iTunes, and various games - not just web browsers - all cause the machine to shut down. I've taken to running the machine in "Better Energy Savings" mode all the time, just because it shuts itself off less often. But off course the Powerbook runs much more slowly now...
The Applecare Extended coverage period for the powerbook ended while I was on vacation - which is part of why I took care of the superdrive problem before I left, even though I knew that I would not be in the US to test out the computer when it came back from Apple. It seems that the repair caused the problem that I'm now experiencing. Perhaps a CPU heatsink wasn't mounted properly, or the fan was somehow incorrectly installed? In the end, it doesn't really matter, but I'd like to get the problem corrected. However, I'm presently out of the United States (again) and in a country where there are no Apple stores. I won't be back to the U.S.A. until the beginning of November. In the meantime, I'd like to get this problem resolved so that I have a more useable computer. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Return your Powerbook to Apple. Although the extended warranty has ended, it appears the last repair caused a new problem. If you want to talk to someone first, you can contact Apple customer care via phone.

  • HELP - Series of problems since latest ATV update 2.3.1

The first problem occured as soon as I tried to sync ATV & itunes after the update. I opened up itunes and it 'froze' as soon as it started to sync with ATV, this happened 3 times. I disconnected ATV from itunes, opened itunes and then re-connected ATV and resynced all of my content (which took 3 hours!!).
Yesterday I opened up itunes and after a series of checks it finally launched but to my annoyance all of my playlists had dissapeared and lots of my content was missing. I have retrieved my missing content from my itunes folder but the playlists are gone, these include the 'standard' itunes playlists such as 'recently added', 'on the go' etc.
Apologies for the long winded post but this is causing me great frustration and any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Having read through some posts on this forum I have come to the conclusion that one of the problems may be caused by genius playlists created on ATV. Since my original post I have done a fatory restore on ATV, then a software update to the latest version 2.3.1. I then re-synced with itunes and the problem of itunes freezing seems to have gone away. The only other issue I have now is that any purchases I made through the itunes store will not sync to ATV. I will have to contact apple to help me with this issue.
    Hope this helps.

  • ATV General Bad Behavior

I don't know if I can blame these recent bugs on the new update or a tired ATV - several years old - but I've suddenly got a lot. It started with audio dropping out after one or two songs. Hitting pause and then play usually returned the audio but only most times it was a temporary fix and the pause, play solution has to be invoked every five or six songs or so. Now, every so often when ATV is awakened there's no audio at all and only a restart will bring it back. This combined with the spotty way ATV finds the remote speakers - frequently never finding them without a restart - and seemingly sudden slow movie download times is combining to make me consider trashing it, sending it to the repair shop, downgrading or just seeking other hardware. Thoughts anybody?

    capaho wrote:
I believe that the fundamental problem with the ATV is that the hardware is simply not able to perform reliably under the demands of the current software.
I think 'current software' is the key and maybe has been since Take 2.0.
I always had the feeling that the Take 2.0 interface was a software model overlaid on or wrapped around the underlying playback engine/menus from 1.0 (that itself worked well), with tweaks, enhancements additions, but bolted on and not rewritten from the ground up.
As new features were added each layer of additional complexity was adding to inefficiency which as you say might make the current software too demanding in some instances for the underlying hardware.
To my mind 95% of current development is aimed at pushing the iTunes Store model, rather than improving basic essential playback functionality and networking which I susepct could be optimised further even on the rather underpowered hardware by modern standards.

  • Library found on ATV but will not load

Have ATV hooked up via HDMI to TV with Optical digital audio cable connected to Pioneer Elite VSX-03 TXH
    ATV connected wireless to router.
iTunes Library on wireless windows xp laptop
    both connected to same/only router
I can watch Netflix, listen to internet radio, log into flickr.
After turning on Home Sharing on both my iTunes and ATV, I am able to see "Michael's Library" under the Computers tab. When I select "Michael's Library", I get the black screen that says 'Loading "Michael's Library"...
....and it just sits there for hours. Ugh not sure what the issue is. I tried turning off home share on both iTunes and ATV. Also tried unplugging ATV and plugging back in.
Broke down and talked to Apple. They said the issue was I didn't have SP3 installed for Windows XP. Thought that was a weird issue. Downloaded and installed SP3 and still having same issue.
Anyone have any thoughts on this issue?

I had the same problem driving me round the bend. In the end I changed two things and it now works fine. He's a description of my setup and what I did in case it helps anyone out.
    Set up:
ATV 2nd gen in lounge as is the wireless router (Netgear DG834GT, 2.4GHz 802.11) at the other end of the room. iMac (10.6.5) upstairs well within range of the router.
    Problem:
Same as described in this thread where the library is available but content will just hang when I try and select anything from iTunes library on the iMac. Accessing anything on the internet on ATV worked fine. Additionally, I'd occasionally be using ATV and go back to it an hour later and nothing worked - not even the internet - it appeared to have lost the network.
    Solution:
    a) The first problem with content hanging from iTunes in my case turned out to be interference from other wireless things in the house. I've a cordless phone that was in the lounge and also a wireless baby monitor in the same room. I simply switched them off to check at first that it was the problem, and turned them back on to witness the issue again - I can't remember if the interference was immediate as I was testing it out whilst doing other things. I'm not sure what channels the phone and baby monitor are on but played around with different channels on the wireless port of the router until I found one that didn't suffer from interference. I've not had any problems streaming from my iMac since changing this.
    b) The second problem with losing the network I think was down to other computers and smart phones accessing the network. I was actually losing the network on the iMac end too, not just the ATV end. I think at one point whilst I was having problems there was another laptop and numerous smart phones accessing the wi-fi, all taking an automatically generated IP addresses. I solved this by giving the iMac and ATV a fixed IP address rather than letting them take one automatically. Essentially I left all the other DHCP settings the same and just changed the last digits on the IP address to something in the nineties e.g. 192.168.0.91 for the iMac and 192.168.0.92 for ATV. Since doing that neither of them have dropped the network so there's been no need to reboot the router etc.
Anything wireless these days just seems to get too complicated as there are too many variables... especially for a consumer device which you'd expect to just work out of the box.
Anyway, hopefully you'll find a solution as ATV really is pretty good when it works (I wasn't saying that a week ago!).

  • Sinc my iPhone after Change from PC to Mac

I just got a new Mack Book Pro and I would like to sinc my 3G-S iPhone with it.
So far I was using a PC with Windows XP, but after authorizing the new Mac in Itunes it seems that if I connect the iPhone, everything will vanish from my iPhone when sinc take place ............
any one could give the steps?
    Thanks a lot

    Welcome to the discussions,
    a manual backup will help:
Disable autosync in itunes, connect your phone, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures taken with the phone and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your phone got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
    Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • Atv 1 no longer able to stream or copy over movies

    Hi
I have the original atv which since installing lion seems to no longer be able to stream movies without them stopping about every minute, or be able to copy the movie over from itunes, for example it has been copying a movie over from itunes all day and its still not done.
    Anyone having the same issue
    Does anyone have an answer.
I have all system up to date with latest itunes
Funnily enough I can watch the movies stream to my iphone from my  mac with no issues,
I have changed channels on the router and have a reasonable connection speed.
    thanks
    chris

I am having the same issue - ever since I went to Lion my Apple TV 1 doesn't stream without crashing.  My Apple TV 2 works just fine...
We can't be the only ones...

  • ATV can't pair iPhone remote

    Greetings all.
My iPhone 3GS (4.0.2) used to work fine as a remote for my ATV, but since I was forced to restore my ATV to fix a iTunes sync problem, it doesn't.
The remote App can see the ATV. When I enter the code into the remote screen on the ATV, it lets me enter the numbers, but when I try to click 'done', the ATV just makes that 'you can't click here' noise.
The regular ATV remote works fine.
The ATV is on the same wi-fi network as the phone.
I have tried the troubleshooting steps in the knowledge base article to no avail.
    Any ideas?

I am having the same problem in that the iphone does not even show up under the remote section on ATV. I have three ATV units and it does the same thing on all of them. They all were accessible using the remote app in the past. Had no issues previously with pairing the iphone as a remote. Updated remote application just the other day and it still is not working. Anybody have a fix. My network is fine we have tons of devices that use it daily. ATV's are connected through ethernet.

  • Whats the difference in functionality btw the 2 old ATV"s i have and new

I have had 2 ATV"s since day 1 and love em. i use them in stream mode only.
Is their new functionality in the gen 2 ATV that i wont get with the V1?

The only new functionality you'll get is this:
    * netflix
    * No more fear the unit will burst into flames even if you're not using it.
    * The new atv runs the same os as the iphone, touch, and ipad so there's a good likelihood future updates will bring new apps (hulu+, mlb, pandora, etc...) But I wouldn't hold my breath for an app store.
Here is what you will lose:
    * If you have a large video library there seems to be a minor video stutter issue during video playback.
    * You can no longer browse the iTunes store and pick items to purchase forever.
    * Season pass episodes no longer download automatically (You have to download them in your computer's itunes and it never calls home often enough to be useful when you have "automatically check for downloads" selected)
    * Your audio/video will now be tucked away inside a sub menu which for me doesn't seem right.
    * Your tv seasons will be listed individually in the master list.
    * Your movies can no longer be sub-grouped by setting show and episode metadata (get info)
    * Captioning text is too small.
If you subscribe to netflix it's worth running out and getting one. If you're not interested in netflix then hold off until the next update and see if it brings any new features you're interested in (and fixes some of the first release glitches people are finding)

  • Security code check on ATV

Have to give security code to rent movie on ATV?
Since the latest update the ATV asks for the credit card securuity code when renting a movie.
This is anoying, to say the least!
aparantly growth comes with distrust. that's a pity, for us, for Apple.

Well, that's basically how it worked for the past few months. But if renting a movie is all a hacker want's to do there's a whole lot of easier opportunities for them on the web.
This means my credit card (hence me) needs to be around whenever a movie is rented.

  • Mac pro quad core overheats since installing snow leopard OS

I seem to have a lot of overheating since installing on my pro tower. the fan runs constantly. additionally, the monitors go to sleep on their own and I can't wake them back up. does LION OS fix this or am I doomed?

    Bad or faulty RAM
Poor power cable connection to the back or to the outlet
Running off a UPS that is too small (you want 900W / 1350VA range)
Of course disconnect all peripherals but mouse/kb and try in Safe Mode.
    Reset SMC www.apple.com/support/macpro
    Run Apple Hardware Test
I wouldn't rule out it being the ATI 5770 either.
I know there are other threads w/ identical symptoms.
