ATV/Surround Sound Sys

New ATV2. Setup according to directions. Hooked into a Sony Bravia (2 yrs old) system via HDMI. I get picture, YouTube, everything but sound! Turned off Dolby setting (thanx Apple tech support). Now I get sound only through the TV speakers, not the surround system. Advice gratefully sought. Thanx to all.

I have a typical setup also using a Sony Bravia TV (KDL-46V5100) and a digital surround receiver that sounds similar to yours. I use the TV strictly as a video monitor and get the sound strictly out of my receiver which is always on when I watch TV. The Apple TV is hooked up to the TV monitor using an HDMI cable and to the surround receiver using an optical digital cable.
On the Apple TV, under the 'Audio & Video' settings I have 'Dolby Digital' set to 'On'; 'Audio Output' set to 'Auto'; 'HDMI Output' set to 'Auto'.
On the TV, under the 'Sound' menu I have 'Speakers' set to 'Audio System'. This turns off the internal speakers of the TV.
On the Receiver, since the optical cable is connected to the AV input, I have the AV source selected while watching TV.

  • Connecting X-Fi XtremeMusic to 5.1 Surround Sound Sys

I'm trying to connect my Media Centre PC with Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic to my Samsung HT-UP30 5. Surround Sound System http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...62_UP30-GB.pdf?, which has the two aux inputs, which are standard phono connectors. There is also a Digital Optical Input, if that's any use.Currently I'm just using a normal 3.5mm Stereo Plug to 2 Phono Lead but this is only giving me sound to the center left and right speakers.Any suggestions?

If your system doesn't have an analog input with 5. connectors, you're limited to stereo via digital connection. Say "thank you Creative for not supporting digital surround on your cards"!
A sound card that does DTS or DolbyDigital encoding on the fly is what you need to have surround via digital connection.
A, you still can enjoy DVD's in surround via "digital pass-trough". This if you don't like the DVD player that you allready have . The bad part is that your system has only an optical input and your card doesn't have one. Turtle Beach has a sound card with what you need (DolbyDigital li've and optical out), but their EAX implementation (for gaming) is software and a little crappy. Still, it works.
Or you can buy a set of analog surround speakers for PC and connect those at your card. And sell the Samsung thingie.
Or you can buy a receiver with the analog 5. input and digital ones also - that's what I have.

  • No sound on surround sound sys

I have a Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic card and need to know?where to connect the audio plug that leads to my 5. system. Line out has my computer speakers (2.) and I tried connecting the other plug to line-out 2 and then 3 but get no sound. The only way to hear a movie via my computer on my tv and 5. set-up is to use a 2for adapter in line-out with my computer speakers. ?

What kind of speakers are they exactly?
The X-Fi Xtreme Music has 3 outputs on the back of the card, if you are using analog 5. speakers then you should use those outputs.
Check this image of the card.
    The outputs you need are:

  • How do i hook my ATV through my surround sound and then to my TV?

    Hi,
I have just bought a Samsung HT-Z120 to play music and video with my ATV through my TV. However i have a slight issue connecting everything together harmonously.
Currently i have 3 RCA components connecting the TV to the Samsung HT-Z120 (surrond sound system) and a HDMI cable connecting my ATV to my TV.
I need to connect the ATV directly to the surround sound but the connections i have left on my surrond sound and ATV are an optical output on the ATV and a audio out and video jack on my surround sound. I know this is a silly question as one is fibre optic and the other is analogue, but is there anyway to connect all this together?

    BPERRO wrote:
No unfrotunatley there is no HDMI output on the surround, neither is there an optical. All i have is 2 rca point and 3 rca component point. I bought it second hand thinking it was a good deal, however i now realise my mistake.
Im not sure im going to be able to make this work, unless there is a magic answer involving the two remaining audio jacks from the surround.
Thanks for both of your replies...
The Apple TV only supports HDMI and Optical Output. I took a look at your Samsung product specifications online and it is a bare bones unit. You will not be able to connect the Apple TV to your Samsung product.

  • Connecting ATV to surround sound

    Hi
I'm trying to connect my ATV to Sony surround sound.
The surround sound only has an HDMI output. It has one optical sound input.
I have connected ATV to the TV via HDMI.
I have connected ATV and my Fox box to the one optical sound input via an optical cable splitter.
Fox sound is fine. No ATV sound - even when Fox is turned off.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks Rudegar - that's how it's set up, only problem is no sound from ATV.
Presumed it was something to do with settings, but have played about with everything I can think of and still no joy

  • ATV and Surround Sound Speakers

    Hi gang,
I'm looking to hook up a surround sound system and I'd like to have it so my iPod/iMac/iPad can wifi play over the sound system. I've got a Samsung Plasma TV with the following things hooked up:
    - Current gen Apple TV
    - PS3
    - Wii
    - Comcast DVR
    - Sony DVD player
I'm thinking I just need something that runs from the TV to the surround sound speakers, but not sure about how to play music by wifi through the speakers. I'm no tech wiz, so I'm looking for an out of the box solution if at all possible. Any thoughts / inputs?

Unless the TV has the option to output surround sound to a receiver (most don't) you would put the receiver in front of the TV in the chain and have all your other devices feed into the receiver, using the receiver to switch inputs to the TV rather than the TV itself.
Your current Apple TV would take care of all the streaming from your iPod, iPhone and iMac.
When considering a receiver take account of all the inputs you require as a result of all the devices you wish to play through it.

  • How do I connect my Apple TV to my Philips surround sound DVD system?

I can't seem to get surround sound when watching Apple TV (or when watching live or recorded TV via my Virgin Tivo). I use a three-years old Philips DVD home surround system to get surround sound when I'm watching Blu-Ray (I have connected my Philips Blu-ray and my Philips DVD player without difficulty). But I can't figure out how to get surround sound whne watching Apple TV. I bought an optical cable with an audio jack on one end, to connect to the DVD player and the optical end clicks into the ATV. Still nothing. Any ideas?

The surround system seems to support digital audio - it has settings for HDMI audio and video (even though it doesn't actually have an HDMI port) I bought the optical/audio cable on the advice of a staff member in the Apple Store, but frankly, she didn't see, to understand my problem. She recommended I insert the cable into the "MP3 cable IN" port but that' not working.
I'm probably not explaining myself very well - bottom line: I have a DVD surround system and an Apple TV, so how do I connect them?

  • How can I connect my apple TV to my surround sound system without running any extra cables?

I have my Apple TV connected to my TV via HDMI. The TV is connected to an auxiliary box that outputs sound to house speakers. I don't want to run any additional wires because of the distance to my auxiliary box and the fact all my wires now run through the wall. Also the auxiliary box lacks any extra HDMI ports.
On cable, the TV sound plays surround sound, but on the Apple TV sound plays from the TV itself.
Is there any way to alter settings on the TV (LG LB6100 Smart TV) to change the sound source?

if you have a router and set it up for wifi and have ethernet plugged in then point your iPhone to that router and it will connect to the ATV.

  • Cannot get 5.1 Surround Sound with optic fiber cable (Mini Toslink)

I have a Macbook Pro (Early 2011 Model) and after spending lot of time I figured out that the best way to get 5.1 surround sound output is to connect the MBP to the AV Receiver with the optic fiber cable (Via Mini Toslink Adapter). So after reading all the articles and forums on it, I went and purchased the cable and adapter and hooked up my MBP to my AVR 142 Harman / Kardon receiver.
But now I’m still not able to not get Digital 5.1 surround sound!! Additionally, in Audio MIDI Setup (under Utilities), I can only select Stereo from the drop down menu, as "5.1 Surround" and every other option, such as 7.1 surround are grayed out.
Is there anything that I have missed out in the setup? or do I have to try some other method to get the surround sound??
    Please Help!!

ATV definitely supports AC3 DD 5.1... etc, but definately not through AirPlay, only streamed through the inet.
I also found, in the case of Netflix, that the AC3 is preserved in the highest bandwidth mode but not available in the lowest. (frankly i did not test the intermediate bandwidth)
I was quite pleased with the sound and picture from Netflix.
I am not so patiently waiting for AirPlay to support AC3 DD or DDPlus because I record my home video in %.1 surround (AVCHD) and can preserve it through Final Cut Pro and DVD or Red Laser, but cannot use the intended cable replacement (AirPlay) to play them.
    Bummer..
I think/hope if more people request surround sound via AirPlay Apple may then follow through on this otherwise good idea.

  • AirPlay and surround sound

Hi, set up my apple tv . I have managed to get everything working ok but when I use the AirPlay option I cannot get my surround sound to work, it only comes thought the speakers on my tv. My current scary lead goes from my sky tv box to the DVD player that has the surround sound. However, when I set my scary from tv to DVD p,Ayer there is still bNo surround sound- do I need ton change a setting?
    Thanks

I have no idea what your current setup is, despite your brief description. Go back a few steps to 'troubleshooting 101'. If your using the HDMI only, your ATV will output audio to whatever device the HDMI is connected to (uh, your TV?)
If you want audio sent to any other device, you must use the digital optical connector. It is always active, so no changes in your ATV are necessary - just hook the optical cable to your surround receiver, configure your receiver to work with the optical input you have the ATV connected to, and it will work.

  • 5.1 Surround Sound

After doing some research, it seems that there is general consensus that the ATV supports 5.1 surround sound. However, no one seems to agree how to actually do it. Does anyone here know? Thanks

I've already read about 5.1 on Apple TV and even found a file that was converted to DTS, downloaded it to Apple TV and it played true surround sound, I got good separation on all speakers and my receiver showed 5.1 DTS working. So yes I agree that iTunes needs to add movies and shows with 5.1. I went into iTunes and then under the iTunes menu at the top picked iTunes Feedback and let them know that I would buy movies if they put them in 5.1. I think you and any others should also send in feedback and maybe the will get the hint.

  • KDL 55W800C Android TV apps not getting 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound

Just bought KDL-55W800C Android TV few days ago. Everything is great except the DD 5.1 surround. I am using optical audio out to a STR-KS360 receiver. I get 5.1 with Telus Cisco CIS430 PVR connected to TV no problem. But when I tried Netflix, Play Movies and USB test MP4 on the TV. They are coming through as 2.0 only. BD connected to TV also only come through as 2.0 only while BD connected to receiver gives 5.1. Is this a known problem? There seem to be similar threads on other models. E.g. https://community.sony.com/t5/4K-Ultra-HD-TV/XBR-75X850C-Netflix-Amazon-dolby-digital-5-1-channel-support/m-p/509054/highlight/true#M4168

That sounds more logical, however, Apple and Netflix are pointing at each other.
The player needs to be compatible with Dolby Digital Plus, so that would ultimately put the responsibility on Apple. However, DDP for streaming 5.1 surround sound from the Internet is relatively new, so it doesn't surprise me that the ATV doesn't currently support it, but I would expect Apple to release a software update for it at some point.

  • Is it even possible to edit surround sound on a Mac Pro?!?!?!

    Hello,
I've just been reading this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2924869?
Which among many things discusses the fact that Mac Pros, even through an optical cable, are not capable of exporting live 5.1 audio - they can only playback already encoded 5.1 dolby audio from DVD's for example. Apparently the optical out is a purely stereo affair otherwise. I've finally received my Logitech 5450 speakers (took weeks and weeks) and hooked them up. They can indeed playback 5.1 from a DVD, which is splendid. However, one of the things I was most looking forward to was working on surround mixes in Soundtrack Pro. However, firstly STP doesn't want to convert stereo files into surround (like the video online showed), but only means that the surround panner pans between the two front speakers. (I know there's another thread about that, but the proposed solution of adjusting the collapse slider does nothing).
Secondly, and perhaps more confusingly, if I load an actual 5.1 file from the STP content, it still doesn't play in proper surround - the centre speaker kind of works and I think something's rumbling through the subwoofer, but both of the left speakers and right speakers are 'compressed' into the front one alone - nothing comes out of the rear speakers (they are perfectly connected I assure you!). In other words, f I move the puck in the surround panner so it's solely on the front right, and then over to the rear right, it's exactly the same (coming out the front).
I'm sure there must be a solution. Why would Apple advertise the ease with which one can now mix surround if the Mac Pro (I'm not exactly talking about a mac mini here) cannot export live 5.1?
Something which I'm sure is related, but which I can't solve, is that if I go into Audio MIDI setup in Utilities, and try and 'Configure Speakers', only two channels are recognised, and it won't let me select any of the multichannel options (such as 5.1, which is greyed out.)
Anyone know what I'm going on about? I'm totally lost - not really an audio person in general, but hoping to enrich my short films with some surround magic.
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Steve
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Typically 5.1 is mixed, and monitored on a 5.1 monitoring system, which means you need an audio interface and setup capable of outputting six channels of audio.
So of course the Mac Pro is capable, but not without additional multi-channel playback and monitoring hardware.
Encoded surround sound, which you hear on playback from things like a DVD, is entirely different story and the encoding is done at the end of the mixing/mastering process. Sometimes you will encode a mix in a variety of formats, Dolby Pro Logic, DTS etc.
