ATV sync hogs my wireless network

Is there any way to schedule the wireless sync so that it only happens at night? ATV sync really eats up my wireless network's bandwidth during the day....
Caveats:
1. Turning off iTunes is not an option
2. Ethernet connection to ATV is not an option
Thanks!

I will mark as "answered" and close the issue, but I think there should be a feature that allows you to set a sync time for the night (or a window of time that is convenient when you do not need the wireless network). Syncing even 2 movies can take more than an hour and suck up a lot of the wireless bandwidth.

So I have my ATV on my home wireless network and my Mac is directly connected to my modem. Is there a way to have the two see each other? The only way I've gotten it to work is by turning on the Airport on my Mac. Is there any other way of doing it?

how is you mac on the home network? you say it is connected direct to the modem, but how is it connected to your actual network?
do you have a router or hub as your network gateway ?

    Can someone please help?

micro usb to the back of the apple tv into the comptuer, open itunes, select the apple tv from the left and follow the onscreen instructions....
if apple tv is 2nd generation just use the micro usb
if the apple tv is 3nd gen you need the power cable and the micro usb cable
    hope this helps

  • Cannot Access Wireless Network During Apple TV Set-up

I recently purchased Apple TV and was trying to set it up last night. I got as far as selecting the language. The ATV detects my home wireless network (as well as a couple of other nearby wireless networks), and allows me to select it, but I kept getting an error message stating that I could not connect and to try again later (then there was a (-6) at the end of the error message). It is not a password protected network.
I then unplugged ATV, my television, and my wireless router, waited a minute, plugged everything back in, and went through the drill again, with the same result.
I then re-started ATV using the remote and tried again. Same result.
I then ran diagnostics, which told me that ATV is running as it should be. Tried again with no luck.
I then tried the factory restore (even though I’ve yet to actually use the hardware), and got the same result.
I have a Dell Laptop, G4 iMac, and an iPod Touch that all connect to the network (from anywhere in my house) without issue.
I saw the following potential explanation/remedy, but I have no idea how to go about doing this:
Check the IP address Apple TV is using. If it starts with 169.x.x.x, then the router or base station may not be configured properly. Check to see if DHCP access is available or configure Apple TV with a manual IP address.
    Any insights (please)?

Forgive me for the next question, which will probably reveal my ineptitude when it comes to doing anything other than following the directions of a setup wizard... but does my AppleTV even have an IP Address if it can't connect to my network in the first place?
I pinged "AppleTV.local" from another PC on my wireless network and it came back empty. I don't know how to otherwise go about getting the IP address.
Also - incidentally, I was able to connect ATV to a neighbor's open network, but obviously can't stream from my iTunes library. In hindsight, I wish I hadn't tried it, because I was able to watch a few movie trailers and now I have a better idea on what I am missing out on.

  • Must I reconnect to my wireless network EVERY time I want to watch ATV?

This seems like basic stuff to me, but I can’t find an answer anywhere, short of calling the support line….so thought I’d try here first.
EVERY time I sit down to view my ATV, if I want to use it outside of what I have synced to it, i.e. in streaming mode for iTunes, YouTube, Flickr, etc. I have to re-connect to my wireless network, including having to input my password every time. Is this standard procedure, or am I neglecting to “save” my password somewhere? I would have assumed that since it’s never really turned “off”, that it should stay connected to my network, without having to reconnect every time. I mean, I don’t have to input my network password every time I want to browse the web using Safari on my iMac…..why do have to repeatedly do this with my ATV?
It’s rather inconvenient, especially if other family members want to use ATV when I’m not around, as my network password is confidential. (And while we’re at it – is there any way to input your password without showing it?)
Any help would be appreciated – thanks.

Question: have you installed the new Airport 2.0 software? If so, did the problem start after that?
I have had the same problem. A quick temporary fix -quicker than re-entering your password - is to unplug/replug the Apple TV. It should then rediscover the network: go to Settings:General: NW and see if it appears.
However, if we have the same problem, it won't hold the NW connection. It will lose it several times a day.
I bought an Apple TV the moment the came out a few years ago It always worked perfectly as a music and photo server, connecting wirelessly via Airport Extreme like you, the old round one]. Shortly after installing the software upgrade earlier this month, it lost its ability to see my home network or make an internet connection. After several hours trouble shooting with Apple, we were unable to correct this, and they concluded the ATV faulty and sent me a new one. The new one installed and connected perfectly, but after downloading the software upgrade [curiously the replacement unit had the old software] the new unit will not old an internet connection for more than an hour or so. I must unplug/replug the Apple TV to get it back, but it just looses it again in an hour or so. [NB: this is different than the issue which led to the replacement of the unit, as the original could not make a connection at all]. Now after several more hours of trouble shooting, Apple tells me the problem must be caused by magnetic interference from another system component, probably a loudspeaker. As I have had my current system configuration for 13 months, a sudden problem seems counter intuitive. Ia m now in process of re-locating the speaker six feet away to see if it solves the problem.
My son, A Berkely PhD EE and Computer Scientist, suggests that this could be caused by a bug in the 2.0 software, which is brand new and no doubt buggy. So I plan to re-set to 1.0 to see if that is the case.
    I'll let you know!
I replaced the Airport Extreme with a Time Capsule the day before I installed the new ATV. Don't think the new TC is the issue as the old ATV went out wit the Airport Extreme.

  • Using ATV as part of wireless speaker network

I am considering getting an ATV but had a question. I currently have an Airport Express so that I can connect speakers in other parts of my house to my iTunes wirelessly. Would I also be able to network in the speakers that would be connected to my ATV to that network to add another room to get music throughout my house? Or would I only be able to listen to music through the ATV sync'd iTunes library?

    Yes

  • Can Time Capsule be used strictly as a wireless network for ATV and TiVo?

I apologize in advance for the lengthy narrative but I feel that it will only help in describing my challenge/problem.
I currently own and have been successfully using an iMac and Apple TV and syncing with my iTunes account. I want to transfer the ATV to my fiancee's house since I'm spending most of my time there. Until we move in officially I'll be keeping my Mac at home. She does not have WiFi and has an old laptop that I'm pretty sure doesn't even support a WiFi radio. We eventually plan on replacing her laptop with a new Mac Book but until that time comes all I want to do is set up a wireless network for the ATV and TiVo service that I also brought over.
So, I bought the Time Capsule with the future in mind. My question, can I set up TC to act as a wireless router for ATV and TiVo only but hardwire her laptop to keep connected to the Internet? Will I need to connect ATV to her iTunes service through her laptop? Or can I access my information using ATV if the WiFi is set up correctly?
I know that until I bring my Mac and we eventually replace her laptop, I bought a very expensive wireless router but there is a method to my madness....I think.
Any suggestions on the hookup process will be greatly appreciated.

The network would have the same abilities as any other network. I don't know how the AppleTV connects to iTunes but it wouldn't be any different than if the AppleTV were connected to something else.

  • I was on a trip and downloaded some tunes on my notebook.  i then wanted to sync them to my Imac at home, but can nnot find a cable hook up ..nor can i seem to do it through the wireless network...how can I sync from the notebook itunes with the imac at h

I was on a trip and I downloaded some tunes on my notebook.
At home now, and I am trying to sync the notebook itunes new songs to my Imac, so I do not have to open both computers in the 'shared library' section every time I want to hear a song that I bought last week on the notebook.  I simply want to dump my new tunes on my imac and play them from there.  Is there a cable I am missing, how do I connect both computers?
I can not imagine a world where I can buy the music on the notebook, but I can not transfer it on my Imac???!!!
    Suggestions please!
    Thanks everyone,
    Adie Elliott

There are several ways. iCloud is partially live, at least in the US, so if you are in the US and have the latest version of iTunes on your home computer, start up iTunes, click on the Store button in the list on the left side of the screen, and on the right side of the iTunes store screen look for Purchased (there will be an orange New! tag next to it). You can (re)download any songs you've bought from your account on any authorized device you own. IOW, buy with your iPad, download later with your iMac if you don't feel like syncing with your iPad.
If you have a wireless network at home you can using filesharing to connect the two computers and copy the songs from the notebook to the desktop. My wife has a corporate DropBox account and she just copies her new songs into the DropBox and grabs them when she's at home. I have a history of forgetting that I've downloaded songs on my notebook or at work so I always immediately copy them to my flash drive. So there you go - lots of ways to do what you want.

  • In hotel w/wireless network.  ATV finds network, but does not ask me for password, so can't communicate through network.  MacBook Air, iPad and 2 iPhones connected to hotel wireless, but ATV does not ask me for the password.  Any ideas?

I have succesfully connected a MacBook Air, an iPad and two iPhones to the wireless network in this hotel.  Apple TV can see the network and "connects" to the network, but w/o asking for password.  I expected to see a screen immediately after selecting the network that asked me for the password as did all of my other devices.  ATV did not ask me for a password.  When I go to Settings>General>Network, it shows the name of the hotel wireless network, but I can't communicate with the network.  It can't set date and time.  When I try to enter my Apple account name and password, it tells me it can't log in w/o setting date and time.
Any ideas on how to connect to this network?

I am having the same problem. In my hotel when I connect my laptop a screen will pop up and you have to hit the button "I Accept Terms". However I can't do that with the ATV. I called the internet provider and they said they could not help me. Any ideas? Do you think the guy just doesn't know what he can do for me? I am thinking I will call later and hope to get a different technician who might know how to help connect me.

  • I would like to sync iphone 5S with OUtlook 2010 over wireless network

    Hi all,
I need to sync an iPhone 5S with Outlook contacts and calender over internal wireless network.
I have just setup a new iTunes account and have iCloud installed on a Windows 7 machine.
    Thanks.

You need to configure iCloud on the iPhone first then the Windows 7 PC...

iPad2 won't sync with iMac and only my iphone4 shows in the devices window on my iMac.  For some reason it will not detect my iPad via my wireless network!   The iPad will sync when plugged into the Mac however looses connection and disappears from the device window when unplugged.

You already have a wireless router or have just bought one, or do you have an ad hoc connection from iMac to AppleTV?
If things worked in the other location this all point to poor network performance/connectivity. It may be the connection is intermittently lost - small files transfer ok, but interruptions during longer transfers scupper the process.
Interference from cordless phone bases or microwaves (and neighbours devices) might also cause connectivity issues.
Signal strength bars are often not that useful, but will indicate connection to the main wireless device they connect to - so AppleTv may have a good connection to the router but a poor iMac connection to router is not displayed by AppleTV which only shows the connection to the first device in the chain.
You could consider some home mains newtorking plugs such as those made by Devolo but they usually have to be on the same mains ring.

  • Wifi sync searching for old wireless network

I believe a wireless sync on my iPod Touch was started on a hotel's network sometime last year and it must have gotten interupted and is now apparently only willing to resume the wireless sync (or commence a new wireless sync) if and when it finds that hotel's wireless network again.  I have tried disabling wireless sync, restarting itunes and device and re-enabling wireless sync but no luck.  Anyone have this issue and figure out a solution?  One thing I have thought of is renaming my wireless network but ... I would prefer not to because that will just confuse all my other devices.

I finally realized that I incorrectly identified the issue.  It apparenlty was looking for the computer and unable to find it....  I had to turn Internet sharing on to make it work.  So, if I am tethered to my macbook, it works fine but if I am just on the same wifi network, it's a no go.

  • Disappears from iTunes but keeps doing partial sync, only on wireless

I have a peculiar situation. I know I've read people's issues with the ATV disppearing from iTunes mid-sync, however my situation might be a bit unique...
I am running iTunes 9 on a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate... Windows firewall is disabled, AVG Free is the only anti-virus running. (no port blocking software or anything) I also did a factory restore on my ATV, and re-updated to the latest firmware, just before trying this again, with the same results. I have my ATV connected using the basic Linksys WRT54G that everyone has, set for G-only mode. No wireless encryption is being used.
Let's say I am trying to sync 6 full movies to my ATV. It will begin to sync wirelessly, however a few minutes in, the ATV disappears from my iTunes. However, by looking at the lights on my router, I could see there was still a lot of wireless activity going on! It actually finished syncing that first movie after the ATV was gone from iTunes, but then stopped there. I checked on the ATV, and it played the full movie all the way through without iTunes running.
I'm pretty confident this isn't a wireless network problem, since the ATV is literally 10 feet from the router, and there aren't any other strong networks in the area interfering (there's one that occasionally shows up at my house with 1 bar of strength, but I have my router set for a different channel from that network). I also routinely use my MacBook and iPhone on the same network all over the house with no connectivity issues.
When I hardwire my ATV with ethernet, it'll complete the full sync with not one problem.
What's going on here? No other device has an issue with my network, and I know others are having similar, but not identical problems syncing wirelessly... any ideas?
Thanks for any help on this!! I'd love to put the ATV in another room where running ethernet isn't much of an option, so my disabled mother can make use of it... so I'd love to get this problem solved.

The iphone is not a backup device.
You need to copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
