ATV vs Netflix

OK...so assuming you use ATV to stream only, what are the basic differences between it and say Netflix streaming? Tech specs, etc...thanks.
i ask with regards to renting HD movies mostly....

For whatever it's worth, while so far you can only see 720p HD content on AppleTV and Netflix (via whatever hardware you choose to play/stream it's content with), if it's 1080p HD content you're looking for, there is hardware out there that can access a service called "Vudu" (http://www.vudu.com) that offers 1080p HD movies right now. From what I've been told, you don't have to wait much after beginning the movie buffering to start watching the movie, which is a plus. Also, I believe the movies stream with 5.1 Dolby sound, if you have your speakers set up for that.
As a disclaimer, my information is based solely on the fact that I recently purchased an LG Blu-Ray player that I have hardwired to my internet connection that has built-in software on board that can access Netflix, Blockbuster on demand, and Vudu (as well as other things like Weather Channel online and Picasa). I have not purchased any movies for rent from Vudu, I have only watched a few "previews" available for the movies on Vudu. The previews played flawlessly and looked amazing (I played them on a 50" Pioneer Kuro). The selection seemed OK - most new movies, a decent selection of older and obscure movies. I have NO IDEA of how well a full movie would play, if there is any stuttering, how long you have to watch the movie before the rental period is over, etc.

  • ATV and Netflix

Apple TV will no longer run my Netflix.  It says "An error occured loading this content.  Try again later."  I can run Netflix on my other computers and ATV will show everything else.

Apple has stated that the 1st model will no longer receiver any updates.
2nd gen is currently on 4.1 (4.2.1 firmware). The old one is not capable of this and is running an old version of OSX (vs ios, which is on the current model)

  • 5.2.1 update on my 3rd ATV breaks Netflix

5.2.1 update on my 3rd generation Apple TV breaks Netflix, I can see my viewing selections, but when trying to play I get"Netflix unavaiable, try again later".  Its been happening for the last 3 days. Netflix works fine through my blu-ray player.

Have you been able to access Hulu? Or run the network test?  I ask because I just ran the update and get the same message on Netflix and Hulu+. I've run the network test, and the issue for me is that the apple TV is not recognizing me (clearly active) network connection.

  • Netflix issues for three weeks

    Hi All,
About three weeks ago this problem started happening...
Some shows will play, some shows will not load and I get the endless spinning wheel of loading.
The is no pattern to the problem.
Saving Grace Season 2 plays fine. Season 3 will not.
    Continuum plays fine.
    Rockford Files will not.
I could go on. It feels like about half the shows I try to watch get the spinning wheel of loading and doom.
I called Netflix, went through a half hour of troubleshooting, resetting everything over and over again. And nothing.
So I bought a Roku. It works perfectly. The interface isn't as slick as ATV, but Netflix works and Amazon Prime is nice to have.
So now I'm using ATV for music and Roku for Netflix.
If anyone has solved the Netflix problem, I'd love to hear the solution. I hate not having figured it out.
    Thanks!
    Aaron

  • Cannot connect to netflix

I've read a couple of responses to this and it always seems that rebooting AppleTV fixes the problem.  Well, I've done it twice and i still get the problem.  Can access youtube and other stuff via atv and netflix streams fine on my computer.  Any additional ideas?

I have the same problems. Try to sign on but says wrong id or password.

  • Netflix not available

I just got the apple tv because of constant Netflix problems with my Sony bluray, but all I get with atv is "Netflix is currently unavailable" messages. How can I get Netflix on the atv?

I had the same problem pretty much all day, so did some other folks:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15641298#15641298
I can connect to Netflix now but the only options I have are Search, Instant Queue, and Logout. Tv Shows, Movies, Recently Watched, etc are missing from the screen. Strange...

  • Cannot stream Netflix on ATV2

Purchased ATV2 middle of Sept 2011, signed up for netflix day or two later. Initally had some issues that were solved with a reboot. For the past week, after a software update, unable to access anything on Netflix. You tube and eveything else is ok. Did a restore, but if I can get to you tube, then connection is not an issue. Called Netflix, useless as they had no idea, tried to call apple support, no help either.
Searched alot on the net but only found a few things to try, they did not work. Version is 4.4.3
Totally awesome to pay for ATV and netflix only to have issues. They have two days to fix then it gets returned.

I guess that there is 2 possibilities that I can think of.
One is that you are using a single IP address and only one device is getting it at any given time. However with a router I would not think that this is the issue. But just to be sure... I am assuming that the Netgear router's WAN/Internet port is connected to the Comcast modem. The Netgear router should be configured with it's DHCP services enabled. I am assuming that the AirPort Express (AX) is connected via Ethernet to one of the Netgear router's LAN ports. The AX should be configured to act as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address).
The other possibility is that the bandwidth is getting entirely consumed by the Samsung Blu-ray and the MacBook has no opportunity to get any data.

  • Netflix Issues

Netflix currently cannot connect via WiFi but will if wired on all 3 ATVs.  I have tried restarting and resetting the modem, router, and ATVs.  Home Sharing and other Apps (HBO Go, ABC App, etc) all work flawlessly.  This is a new issue, previously everything had been working fine.  Coincidentally, if I use an ATV wired, Netflix will work, other Apps work, but Home Sharing does not.  So this must be a router issue?  Currently using Linksys EA6500.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.
    Steps Tried To Resolve:
Restart, Reboot, and Reset all items (ATV, Router, Modem)
Router - Changed MTU from Auto to 1500
Router - Changed Netflix Protocol to "Both" from whatever the default was

Have you tried rebooting and/or restoring the device? Restarted your router?

  • How to Fix Intermittent Optical Audio Problems using Netflix?

I recently purchased the latest Apple TV and all software is up-to-date.  But I have started having intermittent audio problems only when using the Netflix app on the ATV device.  I am connected to my TV with HDMI, and running the optical audio out from my ATV to a soundbar.  On some, but not all movies, right when it starts streaming there is a loud "CRACK" and then the video continues streaming, but the audio is totally silent.
The issue is definitely with the Apple TV device and only occurs when using the optical audio out from the Apple TV and only when using Apple's Netflix app.
If I remove the optical audio connection and just use the audio on my TV coming from the HDMI, it's fine.  I can also hear audio just fine using the Netflix app on my iPod Touch or just streaming in Safari on my MacBook Pro.  It's only when using the ATV Netflix app, and it's not with all movies, only some.
But when a movie has the problem, it always has the problem no matter what day/time I try to stream it.
    Very irritating.
    Does anyone know a fix?
    Thanks.
    Kurt

Same problem here.  Since the last update, my Netflix streaming has been awful.  Not only does the audio cut off but sometimes the video will cut off and I can only hear the audio.  Then whatever I'm watching will constantly bump me off and sometimes I won't be able to get back in unless I restart ATV.
This is only ATV as Netflix streams on my MBP, imac and iphone w/ no problem....
Wish there was some way we could revert to a previous version of the software.  If so, I want to revert back to the version before the last update as everything worked great...

  • What audio format encoded into iTunes HD Movies and TV shows?

What audio format encoded into iTunes HD Movies and TV shows, AC3, 5.1 DolbyDigital? Its been a long long while since I rented an HD movie on ATV since netflix came around with streaming and BD. Now they have rentals and purchases. Anyone know if the purchases play with 5.1 or better audio?

I think if you pull up the movie in the iTunes store it should tell you. For example, I pulled up the Star Trek movie that came out a few months ago, and it reports "Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound". Clearly you need to make sure that your hardware supports whatever sound configuration the movie employs.

  • Apple TV vs. Netflicks

So I'm trying decide whether to get the apple tv or the netflicks movie streaming device.
The largest fact keeping me from going with the atv is that you must pay like 3.99 for each movie while netflicks offers a subscription starting at 8.99 a month for unlimited rentals. This meaning that after only 3 movie downloads you are spending more than the netflicks subscription. This is a major downfall for my family which watches anywhere from 6-10 movies a month.
Probably the second largest concern is the movie selection. I don't have a lot of knowledge either way but it seems like netflicks might have a larger collection of movies to chose from, or at least to rent.
Other than that I do like the fact that atv stores the movies on the device for later watching and has the ability to look at photos (we have a music server so the music feature is somewhat useless). I also think that the quality is better with atv since the movies aren't being streamed directly.
Hopefully someone has some other knowledge that might shed some light on this decision.

We rely on both ATV and Netflix (streaming to a Roku box and the 2-DVD plan). Frankly, we're using the Netflix device far more than Apple TV right now simply because there is a much better selection, and you simply can't beat the cost of the Netflix service. Also, we've got a 20Mbps/5Mbps internet service, so the quality of the Netflix video when streaming is virtually indistinguishable from a DVD.
We'll keep the ATV around for occasional movies that we can't get from Netflix, and also for streaming music over our stereo, but more often than not, we'll be using the Netflix service from here out.

  • KT4 Ultra in multi-zone audio system

If you want to see a MSI KT4 Ultra used in a home theater and multi-zone (whole house) sound system, have a look at this page!  8)

Well I got my DAC today and I'm happy to report that everything is going to work the way I hoped. So here is my setup:
    1. Main zone - ATV connected to Denon 1909 with HDMI for both audio and video.
    2. Zone 2 - ATV connected to DAC using optical audio and DAC connected to Denon using RCA composite.
    3. Dolby digital setting on ATV set to "auto"
When I am watching in the main zone I get 2 channel audio when listening to music and Dolby digital with Netflix or iTunes tv shows.
When music is playing, if I switch on zone 2 the audio plays through my outdoor speakers just fine. My Denon display shows a 2 channel audio input.
If I leave zone 2 on and put some multi channel content on the ATV (like Netflix) the outdoor speakers give off a static feedback sound. This is the one glitch in the setup and was expected since the DAC can't process multi channel sound. But since I never plan to use the outside speakers for anything but music it shouldn't be a problem.
So it appears that the auto setting is not purely based on the capabilities of the HDMI device connected to the ATV but actually the programming that is running at the time. Makes sense.
Think I will keep the ATV 3.

  • Apple TV unable to connect to server

    I'm in need of HELP!
I few weeks ago I reset my ATV because Netflix wasn't streaming properly. When it reset, the screen to sign into home sharing came up. I am unable to sign into home sharing and get this message "Unable to connect to server at this time, please try again later". Its been doing this for weeks... I've tried using my husband's apple ID and mine several times. I've reset to factory settings... un plugged wifi and tv... my wifi is working perfectly fine with all other apple products.
I am able to stream netflix over airplay, but I am not able to get any farther than the inition screen that has the "Homesharing" or "settings" button.
    What can I do??

    Hello,
Were you ever able to find a solution to this problem? I am having the exact same issue.

  • HT3180 The internet provider reset my router and now my apple Tv does not work in netflix i get ATV-ui10 error and when i perform a network test it works fine but no movies are coming up on the screen and you cannot select anything.

The internet provider reset my router and now I cannot use Apple Tv.  I tired restore and reseting the apple tv and the Network test is fine.  Netflix shows error atv-ui10 and you no movies come up it just shoes black tickets at the top of the screen and says i am not connect.  Internet works fine.

Delete/forget the network connection on the ATV and reconnect to the network.
    Power cycle the router.

  • Mirroring from MacBook Pro to ATV, with the use of a VPN: Netflix no longer working

Since upgrading to Yosemite, I cannot mirror Netflix from my MacBook Pro to my ATV. I would use the Netflix on the ATV however I currently live in China and need to use a VPN. Mirroring works for Safari, Itunes and all other programs except for Netflix. The error message is ensure your monitor is HDCP compliant and is not mirrored using Airplay.
Anyone know how I can fix this?

I believe so. I was able to to mirror netflix through the use of VPN prior to the Yosemite upgrade.
