ATV w/ AE & no internet in RV, Airplay issue...

I have been reading and found that I can use Apple TV and an Airport Express to create a Local network in my RV to connect iOS devices to Apple TV. A lot of the campgrounds we frequent have strong cell (4G) but no internet. My goal would be able to stream an app, Watch ESPN, and airplay it to ATV. I ahve created a new LAN on the AE and my i4s attaches to it. Then setting the i4S network connection to static and setting the IP and SubNet manually I can pull data from my cellular plan, which is unlimited, and bradcast to the LAN I created at the same time. All of this seems to work fine untill I Airplay from within an app. From the home screen if I flick the screen from the bottom up I get the grey screen and it shows the main Airplay button. When I pick it and enable mirroring everything works properly. Also if I want to view locally stored items such as pics or videos everything is good. If I turn off that main button and then open the "watch ESPN" app and pick the airplay button inside the app it just spins and spins and I finally get the error "content could not be displayed, Try again later". I would like to be able to air play from within the app, I find the resolution is better than just standard mirroring of the i4S. Any ideas??Thanks

So is it occurring only within ESPN app? Not all are enabled for basic airplay.

    Hey,
Do you need the internet to use Airplay between devices and if so why? Am very confused why such a simple idea is complicated by having to have the internet?

Airplay should work without an internet connection. To check this out I unplugged my modem and Airplay worked fine on my iMac as well as my iPhone.

  • Apple TV/Airplay issues

    Here is my situation...
Company MacBook Pro - Airplay works fine while at home with my personal ATV3 (Recently updated). At work, it is a different story. Here is what I have experienced so far.
    1. Same Company Mac and recently updated company ATV3 on the same wireless connection in the office. ATV is NOT detected on Mac and Airplay does not work.
    2. If I use my iPhone5 or iPad, on the exact same company wireless in the office as mentioned in issue #1 above and same ATV3 mentioned in #1, Airplay works.
    3. If I turn on my iPhone5 hotsport and connect the exact same company Mac and exact same company ATV to it, Airplay works.
What advice does anyone have in regards to issue? Why will the Mac/ATV not connect while on the same wireless work connection, but the iPhone and iPad will? What setting could I be overlooking?

    Hi Winston
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately none of those steps cured the issue.
What did cure the issue was using iTunes to restore my iPad to its factory default. After this, airplay worked exactly why it should. Why restoring the iPad would fix the fault is beyond me as my ipad hasn't exhibited any abnormal behaviour. But as Apple likes to keep the user away from the workings of the system, I guess I'll never know what the exact issue was.

I don't understand how to fix this and I don't seem to understand where the problem is coming from.

Let's try the simple approach first. Restart your router. Any change?

  • Airplay issues on Macbook Pro 13 inch

    Hi,
I've upgraded my Macbook Pro 13 inch (Mid 2012) to Mountain Lion, and I also have an Apple TV 2nd generation (720p) which has the latest software.
If I use the Airplay icon in the menu bar, and choose "Apple TV", all that seems to do is switch my MacBook Pro to what looks like a scaled down 1080p resolution. Nothing else changes. The options in the Airplay menu don't change at all. It doesn't even tick of the Apple TV option. To get my Macbook Pro back to 1280x800, I have to go into Display Preferences and choose "Best for built-in display".
If, while in Display Preferences, I choose "Apple TV" from the "AirPlay mirroring" menu, AirPlay mirroring seems to work fine. My MacBook Pro resolution stays the same, and the AppleTV shows an exact copy of what I see on my MacBook Pro.
If I then choose "Off" from the "AirPlay mirroring" menu in Display Preferences, the Apple TV goes back to its menu, as expected, but the MacBook Pro switches to the 1080p-looking resolution again. Again, I can choose "Best for built-in display" and the MacBook Pro returns to normal.
I'm tempted to do a clean install of Mountain Lion on a new disk partition, but I've only had the MacBook Pro for about a month, so am not so keen on doing that unless I know that will really make things better. I'm also tempted to get the new Apple TV in the hope that it will work, but it doesn't seem like it's worth the "upgrade" considering it only really gives me a higher resolution on my TV and nothing else. And there's no guarantee that the AirPlay issue will be fixed either.
Does anybody else get this issue?

The symptoms I'm getting now, and I'm not sure if they're any different, suggest that for some reason Mountain Lion thinks my display resolution is higher than what it is, as wether I'm turning AirPlay on or off, it keeps changing it (on the MacBook) to what looks like maybe 1080p.

  • How fast internet needed for AirPlay

I am thinking of buying Apple TV for Airplay Mirroring from my MacBook Pro and iPod Touch 5th gen purposes only. Like i want to play games on my mac but have them also on the TV on a bigger screen. But my internet connection is only 25 KB/s. Once a month it is 200-400KB/s, but that only happens for 4GB of data which i use pretty quickly. Please dont tell me how crap internet it is, i already know. I know that it is wayyy to slow for interent streaming, but when its on a local network only about 15 meters away, will i still be able to have no-lag streaming to Apple TV from my Mac? My MacBook Pro is not Retina it is from 2010. And my iPod is iPod Touch 5th gen. If it is too slow, i will have wasted $110, so please dont just guess give an educated answer. Thanks.

You don't need an Internet connection to use AirPlay or AirPlay Mirroring. You just need a router to connect the iPod touch, iPad, iPhone or Mac to the Apple TV, but it doesn't use Internet, so don't worry about the Internet speed.
If you have got a 2010 MacBook Pro, note that it's not compatible with AirPlay Mirroring, which needs an Early 2011 or newer MacBook Pro. To mirror your MacBook Pro's screen onto your Apple TV, use an application like AirParrot or Beamer

  • Do I have to be connected to the Internet to use airplay?

I am having a graduation party and I want to play music. Can I just plug in my airport express and plug in my speakers then play music wirelessly from my iPhone?

Pretty much. An Internet connection is not required. By default, the Express will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. You just need to connect the iPhone to this network to stream. The only thing to consider is where the music source is. If it's on the iPhone, then no problem. If however, it's on iCloud (or some other Internet source) this won't work.

  • Multiple Apple TV's on the same network with airplay issues.

I work at a school with 37 Apple TV's.  They are all on the same network, some of them are wired while others are wireless.  The problem I am having is that airplay works and then doesn't work for some unknown reason.  The Apple TV's are connected to the network and internet when they are experiencing this and I believe that the issue is bonjour. Does anyone know any way of solving this issue.

Yeah, I think wiring them is the only solution to this problem.
We've only got three (well, had one and bought two more this summer - that's when the trouble started).
The first one I got had trouble connecting with the wireless network, so Apple support said to reboot the main router. That is, shut down the entire network while we reboot for one Apple TV. So...OK, I get it, Apple is a CONSUMER company and we're trying to use their products in a school...in spite of that, so far, it has been worth the effort.
But YESTERDAY I got that message about too many devices on the network and to "disconnect a device..." (you know the rest).
So, I called Aruba, knowing that it was a wireless issue and that I've had issues with them and, particularly
Bonjour. Aruba appears to be a Windows only network - would that I would have known that three years ago. But Aruba TAC has NO CLUE what the issue is. So I called Apple Tech Support and they have NO CLUE - weren't even aware of this posting, what, six months ago? (Shows you how much they read and value the forum - we're on our own, boys and girls!)
So...I wired the front of the school Apple TV to a nearby wireless access point and now it's a steady as a rock. But prior to that I actually stood in front of the ATV and watched as it connected, then disconnected, then connected, then disconnected (ad nauseum). Interferrence? Well, maybe, there are only about 150 rogue networks detected in the immediate vicinity - but Aruba ASSURED ME that their WAPs were sophisticated enough to recongnize that and filter them out. (Maybe not?)
So the ATV at the front of the building ocassionally just drops off the network. I can tell because we run a Flickr slideshow on it all day long with announcements and stuff. When I go by the TV and see the thumbnails and no slideshow, I know it has dropped off the network. Usually I can reconnect it. But that's not good enough.
Finally, yesterday, a teacher called me who has an ATV (long story on how she got that) and said she was not longer connected to the network. A shudder ran through my body as I expected (and realized) the worst.
So, my installer is coming tomorrow to wire her ATV into the WAP in her classroom. But TODAY, I have to call Aruba and enable the additional port since it's not enabled by default.
I'll tell you, every day, I get this horrific feeling in the pit of my stomach that this whole world of technology we have built is held together with bailing wire and duct tape and that it just has to blow at some point.
Then I watch Bob Ross do his paintings (and a NEW KID on the block - watch out for him - Kevin Hill - this kid takes Bob Ross to the next level and he's only 18 years old) and think - "What the heck am I doing here, anyway? Why am I not home painting?" But them I start feeling guilty that I'm leaving the school in the lurch. Who will stand up to these bozos who don't have a clue what's going on and, further, don't seem to care, yet, get this, think they are doing a GREAT JOB! I'm telling you, I'm living on Superman's Planet Bizarro!

  • IPad 3G Airplay Issue on WIFI

I own a 1st gen iPad with 3G and at my vacation home I bought a Apple TV. I setup the ATV on a network with NO internet connection. While using my iPad I join the network and can use Airplay with ease but I CANNOT surf the internet over 3G while being connected via WIFI to a network with NO internet connection. Is there anyway to force Safari to use 3G for internet ONLY and allow the iPad to stay on the WIFI for Airplay?
Thank you in advance for any response.

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • Airplay issues in iTunes 10.4

    Hi
Just about to purchase Lion but still running Snow Leopard.  Upgraded iTunes yesterday though to 10.4.
Problem is this.  I've got my 1st Gen Apple TV (connected to surround sound) and an Airport Express (connected to speakers) in another room hooked up via Airplay - or at least I did have!
Now, when I attempt to 'tick' to add these two speakers to the Airplay icon in iTunes it blinks (milli-seconds) as though it's trying to add but then doesn't on either ATV or AE.  These worked beautifully before I updated iTunes.  Is this a known issue?  Would it be rectified (knowing the 10.4 update is geared towards Lion) once I have updated to Lion?
It's a pain in the rear so if anyone can help I'd appreciate.  I've not really seen same on here so I guess it's just me?!?

Had the same frustrating issue...  I have (3) Airport Express' and (1) 1st Gen Apple TV.  All was working fantastic until I installed 10.4.  I would select which speaker I wanted and it would display "Connecting to Airplay" (which I had never seen before) - and would think and think and then the dreaded unknown error code -15000 kept popping up.  Then I decided to try and push content via iTouch and iPad and both worked without flaw.  So I decided to reinstall 10.4 again with the same results.  After that, I began suspecting a network issue.
I then went into my advanced settings within my Windows (Vista) Security Center - iTunes was selected, and still the same -15000 error code.  After being in my Security Center, and noticed that iTunes Help did not have the the procedure correct, I began looking around and discovered a little note on my Vista Security Center that stated having 2 firewalls can cause some some networking conflicts (I currently have McAfee protection), which also has Firewall protection.  So, after reading that friendly note on the Security Center, I turned off my Windows Firewall, which doing so still noted that I my Firewall was on -- but only via McAfee.  Once I did that - viola - all speakers, including Apple TV connected immediately.

  • Ipad 2 to Apple TV via airplay issue

I have an Apple TV2 in my home which works very well and recently purchased a Ipad.  As an experiment I have downloaded a movie trailer to the ipad to play through appletv to my tv.  Everything works well at home
I have purchased another Apple TV to use at a place where there is no internet. The idea is to load up the ipad with movies, music, pictures etc to watch or listen through airplay.  Everything works great using airplay except the movie trailers that I downloaded from itunes.  I haven't downloaded a full movie yet.  I have also taken video with the ipad and can watch this through airplay as well.   I also downloaded video pods from itunes which also worked and can be viewed with airplay.
When I attempt to watch the movie trailer the ipad says " Can not play video on Apple TV"  The airplay icon is there on the ipad and everything works great except movies downloaded from itunes.  Any suggestions???
    Thanks Steve

I am having a similar issue.  I have an airport express that I am using in my travel trailer to create a network to use with my Apple TV and Macbook.
I have rented 2 movies now and cannot get them to play on the apple TV streaming or using Air Play.  When trying to stream from itunes to Apple TV I get a message that I must authorize the computer I rented the movie from.  With Air Play I get a different type of message...to check network settings I think.
I am thinking with rented content it's a DRM thing that requires some sort of check with itunes via an internet ???
I swear though it worked fine with one previous rented movie for me.  Not sure if something was recently changed in itunes maybe?
It all works fine with my network and apple TV in my house where there is in fact internet access.

  • Apple TV3 AirPlay Issue

    Hello everyone.
Just purchased an ATV3 about a month ago and have been mostly enjoying AirPlay mirroring.... but I have a problem.
Firstly, these are the Apple products in my home: ATV3, MBP 2012, MBA 2012, MacMini 2012, and an iPhone 6.
The 2 MacBooks and the iPhone are in the same area as the ATV3 and the ATV/MBA are on 2.4GHz while the MBP/iP6 is on 5GHz wifi. The Mini is in another part of the house with IR receiver and wifi turned OFF and is connected via ethernet. I have done all updates on all Apple products and the ATV3 has also been restored (after updates) in an attempt to figure this out. I have also made sure that all Home Sharing options have been shut off on ALL Apple items. I have verified the local wifi activity on both 2.4 and 5GHz to make sure I am on channels not being used by others in the area. The MBA/ATV3 are showing max signal in my router (5 bars).
Here is what is happening and it is 100% consistent.
My wife will be using AirPlay mirroring on her MBA in the bedroom. I will be in another part of the house on the hardwired Mini. If I pull up Youtube on any computer in the house, including the ethernet connected Mini, she immediately loses mirroring to the ATV causing the ATV menu to be shown on the TV. On her MBA, the stream continues but the only way she can reconnect to the ATV is to completely reboot her MBA. She cannot simply press the AirPlay icon and reconnect- she MUST reboot since the AirPlay icon still shows her to be mirroring to the ATV. There may or may not be other sites that cause this loss of communication but YouTube creates this problem 100% of the time. Oh, and when this happens, I can hear the Youtube sound from the TV even though I am seeing the Apple menu and NOT connected with AirPlay in any way.
I am a fan of Apple products. I went with the ATV3 thinking it would make things easier since I live in a Mac environment- I am now starting to seriously question this move. This product is useless to me if I cannot use another Mac while the wife is using AirPlay mirroring to the ATV3. Yes, I know I can stay off YouTube during mirroring but I expect to be able to use another computer in any way I wish while the ATV is being used, especially one that isn't on wifi.
Anybody have any suggestions on what is going on and how to resolve it?
Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide.

I have never regretted an Apple purchase, until now.
The previously found problem pales in comparison to the most recent issue. I had decided to avoid YouTube while the wife is mirroring to the ATV3 and all would be well. WRONG! Apparently, I can't watch or listen to iTunes any time she is streaming to the ATV3 either. This is unacceptable.
I am very happy with all of my other Apple products but I feel that I was duped on this purchase. I figured it would just work, and it does, as long as I don't touch any other Apple product I own while this thing is mirroring.
Time to sell it at a loss and find a cheap mini pc to handle my streaming needs. Color me disappointed.

  • Possible Internet Tethering/Battery Life Issue

When either Cellular Data is turned Off, or Airplane Mode is turned On, Internet Tethering (Settings>General>Network) appears to have some process that runs continually in the background (evident by continuously spinning wheel next to the option). The running process has a demonstratively negative impact on battery life (1/3 reduction in ~ 30 mins). The Apple Genius at my local Apple Store and I verified the issue on numerous iPhone 4s that were on display. Turning Cellular Data On and ensuring the phone is not in Airplane Mode stops the activity. But obviously that defeats the purpose of having those options.
So if you are experiencing poor battery life, this might be your issue.

  • Airplay issues after IOS 8  upgrade

After the latest IOS 8 upgrade I have a lot of issues.
Both my ipad and iphone are upgraded to IOS8 and after that I can't stream video to my apple tv, you can see that airplay is tries to connect to my apple tv but returns to the ipad/iphone screen after ~5 seconds. Besides of that both devices also have streaming difficulties to my B&W a7 speaker, problem with this one is that it will stop after 15 minutes and to get is working I have to restart the device.
With IOS 7 I didn't have problems at all.
Do others also have this many problems and what can I do about it?
    I already tried:
    - Restart ipad/iphone
    - Closed all active programs via the home button
    - Power cycled apple tv / remote speaker
    - Reset ipad/iphone (power + home button)
    - Re-install all related apps (remote, B&W, video streaming apps)
    - Reconnected to my home network
Since I didn't have a problem before the upgrade and this occured on 2 devices after the IOS 8 upgrade, I would say this must be related to the upgrade.
Hope someone can give me an advice.

I was able to recover my voice memos, though the original titles are gone.
I opened my Voice Memos app like everyone else and I saw each memo quickly deleting and acting glitchy. I then connected my iPhone to my macbook so I could attempt to restore the backup I had made before the ios8 update. It said it couldn't be done because there wasn't enough room. However, when I opened my memos app again, the voice recordings were there! I can't verify if it's all of them but I'm grateful I was able to recover some.
I use this app to record lyrics on the go and I'd really like Apple to step up and fix this.
