ATV1 vs ATV2 ?

I split my time between the US and Europe - and when in Europe I reside in one of the countries that does not have access to the full content on the iTunes store - in other words - if I logged into the local store I would only be able to buy music - no movies or TV shows.
But on the ATV 1 interface - I am able to choose which store I want to access - so obviously, I access the US store since I have a US billing address.
I realize that the ATV 2 is a streaming device only - with no internal hard drive to store content. And with the imminent release of iCloud (which is working beautifully on my families various Macs and iPhones) - I am trying to prepare for the fact that the ATV 1 might no longer be supported and am thus considering purchasing an ATV 2.
My question is - will I still be able to connect to the US iTunes store on the ATV 2 or will it restrict my access to only the local iTunes store?
Two other less important questions - with the ATV1 I am able to both sync and stream content from my Mac to the ATV1. The upside here is that if my Mac is turned off or iTunes isn't running - then the "synced" content is still accessible on the ATV1. Am i correct in understanding that since the ATV2 is a streaming device only - that a Mac with iTunes running is required to view or listen to any content on the ATV2? And lastly, with the ATV1 I am able to browse and make purchses dircetly from the iTunes store - is this also possible with the ATV2 - or do all purchases need to be made on my Mac?
Thanks for any insight.

Thanks for the info!
OK - so with an ATV 2 - I would need to make purchases on my Mac and stream them to the ATV. I guess that makes sense since there is no internal storage - but maybe with the introduction of iCloud this will change as all content will now be stored in the cloud illiminating the need to store our content on our Macs - makes sense to me in theory - guess we will have to wait and see how Apple decides to handle such issues.

  • Can Atv1 and Atv2 sync with the same itunes library?

I have imac running snow leopard. It was working perfectly well wit my Atv1. I decided to buy Atv2 for airplay function. Since I installed Atv2 icannot find my Atv1. What is more after resetting my Atv1 I cannot find it under 'Devices' in Itunes. It connects to the internet and my network. I can login to the itunes shop and download and watch movies etc. But I cannot register it with my itunes library and imac. Atv1 annAtv2 with same itunes library is it possible or is it uncompatible.?

    Quite possible.
You may need to disconnect the 'connection' and reconnect on AppleTV1 in Settings>Computers.
If a sync (content in My Music not My Shared Music etc) connection AppleTV will be wiped clean of media in preparation for a new sync library.
There may be other factors at play (securtiy software, firewalls, corrupt iTunes/other software installation).
Also worth restarting router, computer, itunes and AppleTV.

  • ATV1 working / ATV2 doesn't for renting movies from iTunes

I've had ATV1 working for years on my wireless network at home. No broadband issues. Rent a movie, 3 minutes later, watching it in HD. With my new ATV2, on the same network, it says it needs 40+ hours to download the movie and it's never been successful with a full download
    Help.
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

  • Transfer from ATV1 to ATV2

How can I ensure my purchased TV shows and movies transfer from my apple TV 1st gen to my apple TV 2nd gen??

AppleTV only syncs directly purchased content back to iTunes if the 'connection' is a sync one not streaming.
The sync library is the very top entry in AppleTV Settings>Computers and syncing allows you to transfer content to AppleTV from itunes to watch when itunes is not running.
You need to remove your current library from the list of Sharing computers (select and remove) below the top entry.  Selecting and removing an existing (or adding) a new top entry sync will delete all content from AppleTV1 BUT several users say content that has not yet synced back to itunes does not disappear. I cannot confirm or refute this.  If the purchased content remains, and you can add itunes as a sync library you should be able to transfer back to itunes and then stream to AppleTV2.  There is a risk you could lose any content on AppleTV1.  If that happened you would have to grovel to itunes store support to reinstate a download (they may or may not allow it).
If yiou are in US and running latest iTunes do check iTunes' iTunes Store Quicklinks section and look at Purchased to see if you can download any previous content direct to itunes - thsi feature is not available in uK so I can't check if it works.

  • Video Quality on ATV2

I have both an ATV1 and ATV2. For the ATV1, I created video files using Handbrake from home recorded DVDs. I'd make 2 versions of the files, 1 for sync'ing to iPhone/iPod, and 1 for ATV1 (higher quality). I notice if I play the higher quality (i.e. larger) files on ATV2, the video is poorer with vertical lines in it. The iPhone (smaller) files produce better video on ATV2. However, the video quality on the ATV2 is well below watching them on the iMac monitor. Anyone have any recommendations on a better way to create videos for ATV2 from DVDs instead of Handbrake?

To jump in I'm in the same boat. I've been ripping DVD's with HB for years and just updated 2 AppleTV's to the latest models. So I have two ATV2's and one ATV1. The picture quality from all the HB movies on the ATV2 is really bad. I've tried to rip a DVD several times with HB 0.9.4 and the new version 0.9.5 with different presets like ATV2 in HB but the pic quality still stinks. Also using HB 0.9.5 to rip a movie and trying to watch in on ATV1 causes the ATV1 to freeze and crash.
Sooo *** is going on, I loved the quality and ease of HB and ATV1, now I have ATV2, which is cool with Netflix, but not if all my movies are going to look bad.
    Anyone figure this out yet?
I'm going to plug in my ATV1 into the same TV and see if the pic quality changes from the ATV2, but there must be a way to get a better quality picture without having to reconvert all your movies, I hope.

  • ATV2 no TV menu...

Sometimes my ATV2 has the TV option just to the right of the Movie option and sometimes it doesn't.  Tonight it didn't.
If it makes a difference, I have both the ATV1 and ATV2 powered up at the same time.  Any ideas as to why the TV option block is not always available?

    NEVER MIND!
This morning I discovered that somehow my ATV2 location got changed to Belgium!  I assume that Belgium users can NOT buy American TV shows, hense, the TV icon is not on their menu.
Since I am the only one in the house that operates the ATV2, I assume I was in "settings" for someother reason and accidently hit a button that switched the location to Belgium or it was just a random sanfu (probably the former).

  • Using both ATV 1 and ATV2

Is it possible to run both ATV1 and ATV2 from the same MAC?

Is it possible to run both ATV1 and ATV2 from the same MAC?
Yes, you can have both connected to the same iTunes library at the same time and use them at the same time if they are connected to separate TVs.

  • Can I stream content on AirPort Extreme to Apple TV?

    Hello,
I am considering purchasing a AirPort Extreme.  I am wondering if I can stream the content saved on the hard drive through Apple TV?
    Thanks.

Do you have a hacked (JB is term used here).. atv1 or atv2 the answer is yes..
If you have a standard ATV or ATV3 which is not hackable.. then the answer is no. Your files can be stored on the disk plugged in.. but there is nothing in the AE to stream it... it is a router not a media computer. It has no brains.. at all..
See the poem.. Banjo Patterson. The man from ironbark. http://www.middlemiss.org/lit/authors/patersonab/poetry/ironbark.html
There were some gilded youths that sat along the barber's wall.
    Their eyes were dull, their heads were flat, they had no brains at all;
That is what you need to think of the Airport Extreme.. it has a flat head.. dull eyes..no brains.. Same applies to the TC btw.. where other brands might include DLNA server, itunes server.. twonky media server.. apple has none.. So you must hava a computer running to pick up the files from the AE or TC to stream it to the network. so the ATV.. can pickup the stream and send it to video.

  • I need help trouble shooting my 2 apple TV set up in home.

I have 2 Apple TVs in my home.  One Gen1 and 1 Gen2.  The gen1 is working fine with home sharing and finding the movies, etc.  But the gen 2 is not showing up in iTunes under devices and I can't get it to pull down the content (movies, songs, etc).  What should I do?

ATV1 doesn't use Home Sharing but ATV2 does.
ATV1 was set up using an onscreen code you entered in iTunes for that device.
On ATV2 as you set up Home Sharing credentials on the unit it then finds Home Shared itunes libraries without the numeric code step.  Consequently ATV2's never show in Devices (unless restoring them over USB).
ATV1 had a hard drive to store contemt. ATV2 has solid state memory and only a small amount so cannot store any content permanently like ATV1. ATV2 only streams.  Do you see the iTunes library under the Computers column?

  • New apple tv worth upgrade

I own the original Apple TV and am wondering if there is anything about the new one that makes it worth upgrading?

You have to look at them as different products with different purposes. If you fully used all the features of ATV1, then you would miss some things. If you only used the streaming functions of ATV1, then ATV2 is a very positive upgrade.
I have both. Had the ATV1 for a couple of years. I liked the ATV1 except for lacking Netflix and the VERY slow interface speed.
ATV2 is very quick, small, silent, and runs cool.
Having both an ATV1 and ATV2, I must admit that I am disappointed that the ATV2 cannot access the library on the ATV1, nor can the ATV1 stream to the ATV2 as an AirPlay Speaker. Seems like an oversight.
So the only way to play your iTunes library or photos over ATV2 is you MUST have a Mac/PC turned on at all times. When I pack up my Laptop and head to the office, my house, spouse and kids have no access to our family music library. Unless I hook up the ATV1 to the same main stereo system as the ATV2. Need both. ;-(

  • Apple TV 2 - Not synching correctly during movie playback

    Hi all,
Recently bought the new Apple TV and have set it up fine. During some movies playback I notice the picture starts to jerk and then the sound is about 1-2 seconds ahead of the picture. To rectify this I have to pause the video, then play. When I pause, I can see the video playing catchup to whichever point in the sound I paused it at.
Is anyone else having this issue? Or does anyone know what the cause of this issue is?
The movie plays fine on my iMac with no synching issues. Im assuming its because my iMac is running and using its processors at that given moment. Some of my movies are MKV files encoded to MP4 via Handbrake.
Some help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

It could well be because your Mac is heavy on resource usage running handbrake which will use as much CPU power as is available to do the job.
Having said that I've seen this occasionally with ATV1 and ATV2, and recently I've wondered if it's iTunes doing something else eg automatically downloading a subscription podcast, and effectively freezing to other processes like AppleTV streaming as it saves a podcast to disc.
The other obvious candidate is the network not quite keeping up with streaming demands and running slightly behind.
Try playback without Handbrake or other intensive processes running - does it behave better?

  • Seeing Time Capsule from Apple TV

    Hi all,
I'm trying to get my Apple TV to see the files being shared on Time Capsule.  I have no problem seeing and sharing files between my Macs and can happily play media files using a Western Digital player, but I can't seem to find a way of getting my Apple TV to see the Time Capsule share.  Have I just missed the point and Apple TV can't do that and I can only share via AirPlay or iTunes?  I hope not as that would be a huge failing for the Apple TV as it's internet connection is the Time Capsule.
    All help welcome!
    Cheers.

happily play media files using a Western Digital player,
Tick. It is a media player.

Tick.. Apple TV is not a media player.. it is a sort of connector box between a media player.. ie itunes and your TV. You can think of it as a wireless or ethernet to hdmi converter. With a slightly complicated interface.
ATV1 and ATV2 were immensely popular because they could be hacked. ie jailbreak into a useful media player.. that is why ATV2 command prices 2x or 3x the new ATV3 which so far has resisted all attempts to make it useful.
BTW Apple see the failure in being able to hack the earlier ones.. when you sign up to Apple you sign up to the whole.. or nothing. So the way to play media is to pay for it via itunes.. thus making apple considerably richer.

  • Apple TV 1 & 2 accidentally buying content

Here's a weird one. I recently discovered that if you have both ATV1 and ATV2 hooked up to the same system, you can inadvertently buy content on one while surfing the menus on the other. Since the IR remote commands are the same for all Apple devices, both machines will reacted when active.
I have a home theatre system which I control via a Harmony remote. When I go to an activity that involves the ATVs, both wake up and become active (my ATV1 units is always on and the ATV 2 comes off standby as soon as I access the on ATV screen menu or as soon as I start an activity using the ATV). Some very odd sh.. stuff has shown up on my account as a result.

    DaVBMan wrote:
This is why apple devices have the ability to "pair" a remote with them so they only listen to one.
however as the OP is using a Harmony remote, i doubt that will be useful.

  • How add a radio station to atv3?

attempting to add new radio station to ATV3 using the iTunes playlist method described in hundreds of forum entries about ATV1 and ATV2.
radio station plays fine in itunes;  however, ATV3 sees playlist in Computer>Music>Playlist section but says "There are no songs in this playlist."
    <Edited by Host>

You cannot add a radio station to the Apple TV. The descriptions you've seen are probably for the Apple TV 1. As a workaround you can airplay the radio station from your iTunes library to the Apple TV.

  • Error -108 while exporting video for Apple TV

Anyone have a clue why I would be getting at error -108 in QuickTime Pro while converting an MPEG-4 file to Apple TV format? I was just doing File/Export and selecting "Movie to Apple TV" as the export format.
I'm using QT Pro on Vista. The full error message is "Error -108: An unknown error has occured." It came up (probably) at the very end of the export. (The export seemed to running fine, and it was past 50% when I left to go out for awhile. The error was up on the screen when I came back.) The source video is about 2.5 GB, and should be a fairly normal MPEG-4 video, 30fps, 720x480. The error message itself isn't very helpful, obviously.

    sorry, are you sure?
when I bought my ATV I compared ATV1 and ATV2 and the video performances are the same, infact I play my video in 1280x720 with my ATV but it is convert with toast.
I compared the same video in ATV (720p) and in mpeg 2 (1920x1080 25 Mb/sec) with my medley 4geek and the quality is the same.
Sorry, am I sure about what ?
Apple TV 1 will only play 720p movies at 24 or 25 fps up to 5 Mbps or 960 x 540 at 30 fps, the Apple TV will play video at all frame rates at 720p and around about double the data rate.
Are you sure your camera produces mpeg2 files. If so you might not see an awful lot of difference between the original and the converted videos because h264 is significantly more efficient than mpeg2, although I'd expect you to see some. If your files from your camera are actually h264 wrapped in an mpeg2 container then I'd expect you to see more difference.
another problem, is impossible to create a video .mpe2(fullhd) with imovie, for that I bought ATV.
I don't fully understand what you are asking here.
why toast convert correct to ATV and apple software no?
Possibly because when you are using toast you are choosing a datarate that is compatible with the Apple TV (ie 5 Mbps or less), whereas if you are using (for example) quicktime preset for the Apple TV, you might be making files that are compatible with the Apple TV 2 but not the Apple TV 2, but it's difficult to say without knowing what settings you are using.
