ATV2 crashes
I have ATV2 with firmware 4.2.2 Everythingseems to be working fine, but after 40 minutes work the machine starts to reboot as if it got into some loop. Who has any ideas?
I have MacBook Pro and I did it already but nothing change. I use iTunes to transmit movies via ATV2 to my TV. So in this case I use LAN but WAN is also working without any activities.

ATV2 crashed after 4.2.2 Update-Help!!!!
Downloaded the update and ATV2 has crashed! Nothing but an iTunes logo and a micro USB onscreen. I assume it's asking me to connect to iTunes. I don't have a micro USB, who does anyway? Tried to reset everything (power off and on) but to no avail! Wish I hadn't done the download now!!!!! Anyone have any thoughts before I am forced to BUY a micro
A network problem; would that be solved any other way? As for the cable, they KILL you on shipping ANYTHING to Hawaii. And there is no such thing as 2 Day either. It's only 3-5 business days. I'll check with Radio Shack and bite the bullet. Gotta have my ATV2.
I appreciate your responses!!!! -
Atv2 crashes playing HD content after latest upgrade
Updated my ATV2 to the newest iteration of the OS, and now it seems to crash and reboot when I attempt to play HD material. Haven't experienced it with other services (like Netflix), only with content streamed from iTunes. This happens with material that was downloaded from iTunes and previously played without incident.
I stream over wifi using an AirPort Extreme.
Anyone else experiencing this?OK, I solved it -- sorry for the false alarm guys
Here's what happened. I keep my iTunes library on a server and have iTunes point to that location for the contents of the library. We took a power hit this morning and it looks like iTunes rebooted before the server completed its reboot. iTunes then changed the location of the library to my local hard drive -- where no media is stored.
Once I set the library pointer back to the server, all the media reappeared after a library consolidation.
So, how was I streaming music purchased on iTunes if iTunes had "lost" the location of my library? Looks like the ATV was streaming iTunes purchases from the cloud.
Thanks vazandrew. -
Help!!!!!!!
My ATV2 keeps dropping out when I watch Youtube, the ATV2 plays for around half of the song and then the connection drops and I'm taken back to the main menu. The other issue is that the movies and TV shows aren't available for a short time, these than become available and everything is able to be accessed again. The ATV2 is connected to the internet wirelessly via my home network, if anyone has any ideas to assist it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
MichaelIntermittant issues are often a result of network interference. As you're on wifi I would suggest trying ethernet, you can also check www.istumbler.net to check for interference.

4.2.1 Does Not Fix" Crash-on-screen saver" bug or metadata issues
ATV2 crashes as soon as it goes to screen saver. 4.2.1 does not fix this. WTC?
You have to set screen saver to "Never" to prevent crashing.
No one checks these things?

Metadata issues still hosed.
Not seen the screensaver issue.
Personally I think this update was a patch to fix the DVI flickering issues that rendered the device unusable for many people - other annoyances can be fixed later but we better keep reminding them:

How come my ATV2 causes my internet to crash?
Anytime I go on to my ATV2 and start watching a movie, streaming music to it, or whatever, after a little while my internet goes down and none of the computers on my WIFI can use the internet until I reset my router(aka unplug it and plug it back in). The internet goes down after being on ATV2 for a little while.
Why does this happen?
I have a kind of old router. Would getting a new one fix this problem?
Or do I need to do something with the Apple TV to fix this problem? Maybe it's using to much bandwidth and thus causes the internet to go down?
Thanks for your help!Anyone have a solution to this problem yet? I am still having this problem occur every time I use the Apple TV!

ATV2 Not showing in iTunes, and bricked, showing micro usb and iTunes logos
Hey all,
I was given an ATV2 for christmas a few weeks early, purchased new from Big W (Australia). I happily plugged it in on the 14th or 15th December (I can't quite remember, but I did find out later itunes match went live to a bunch of countries that day, which is why my itunes account crashed). I plugged it in, with the HDMI cable I purchased from australian apple store online, and the power cable. I connected happily to my home network, and started scrolling through the features. I came to a point in setup where it asked for my itunes ID and password. I entered these and it told me it couldn't recognise the apple ID or password.
I tried again, same. I checked my mac to see if it was iTunes or the ATV2 that had a problem... tried to log in, and it said the same error msg. Same on my iPhone and iPad. So I knew itunes was down, and later found out it crashed internationally for some people as itunes match went live.
Unfortunately for me, as I got that first error msg, I aborted trying to set up. I then had a pop up on the ATV2 asking me to update the software (I run the latest software on my mac, ipod, ipad, and have latest itunes by the way), I can't remember which version it had, but it asked me to update, and not knowing the login issue was accross platforms, I tried to log in again and update, hoping it was more a software issue. It seemed to begin updating then pop up with the same itunes error that it couldn't recognise the apple ID or password. At this point the device suddenly showed the micro USB to itunes logo and it became apparent it wanted me to plug into itunes for some R&R. Of course I didn't have a micro usb cable, and had to wait a week or so to get one since I live in the country with no tech shops around. It arrived and I tested it on my itrip as a charging cable. It charges my iphone nicely while plugged into the griffin itrip. So the cable works. I plugged the ATV2 into my imac (latest OSX 10.7.2 and latest itunes 10.5.2) and it doesn't come up in itunes at all. I tried a different USB port in the back of the computer as opposed to the keyboard. No luck. I tried plugging in the power cord as well, no luck. I tried a reset via ATV2 remote holiding the menu and down buttons until the LED light flashes super super fast (as opposed to its current fast flashing). No luck.
How do I get this thing to show up in itunes? Or how can I manually reboot it if it won't show? I live nowhere near a genius bar or even the shop where my family member purchased it, and they probably lost the reciept by now anyway so I doubt I could exchange.
Very dissapointed in Apple for not including HDMI cord or micro usb with the product, not to mention it was Apple's fault itunes crashed right as I was setting up. I'm a huge Apple fan but this is so annoying.
I have read something about router permissions and so on being a possible cause, is this likely? My ipad, iphone and mac never took issue with our wireless network or router previously, but it was setup a year ago and I have no idea what the settings are exactly. We also have two other imac's and a ibook connecting occasionally at home (big family) and no issues there.
I have home sharing on, I did everything the manual said. HELP!Thanks everyone.
Alley_Cat I tried a new micro usb, as a last ditch effort before giving up entirely... SUCCESS! How strange the other micro usb charges my iphone via griffin iTrip perfectly, but wouldn't work with apple TV. Perhaps there are different kinds? Even more bizarre than Apple not including it in the box, is that they don't even SELL micro USB's on the Apple australian online store (or at least they didn't when I checked a week ago). Now that is stupid.
Anyway i'm mid-restore and software update now, fingers crossed!
Also on the HDMI cable inclusion/not inclusion debate... is it actually possible to use the Apple TV for any reason without one? Because my point is more that there is no way to do anything with the thing, without the cable. Printers that don't include usb connections usually are able to connect to your computer and network wirelessly, therefore perform their intended function without the cable. My point is simply if a device is meant to do something, you buy it expecting to do that thing. I'm lucky I had googled it and knew about the HDMI not being included, but even I missed the micro USB inclusion. At the very least this should be clearly marked on the exterior packaging so you know in store, you have to buy the device + HDMI + micro USB. Isn't Apple all about making 'things just work'? -
Tips on donating old Apple TV & crashing movies?
Anyone have tips on how to prepare an old Apple TV for donation?
I am having this probelm with a 1st generation Apple TV that I was copying content onto that I was going to donate to our kid's school (old kid movies they no longer watch). We've moved on to an ATV2.
After much troubleshooting and playing each movie to verify it works I've come to the following issues:
Handbrake Movies encoded using ap Apple TV 2 or Apple TV 3 preset crash on Apple TV 1 hardware. My Handbrake movies I encoded using the Apple TV 1 preset seem to work fine. This was done when we convertd our DVD collection to iTune movies using Handbrake.
Other users running into an Apple TV play a movie or video with audio, but only black video or getting a message:
The Apple TV is not responding.
Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689.
It then gives you a cancel or more info button that links to: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1447?viewlocale=en_US
Should take a look at the movies they are trying to playback. 1st Generation Apple TVs can't use the higer frame rate and larger than 720p frame size found in Handbrakes newer presets.
After I reset the Apple TV (hold the menu button and the - button together for several seconds, choose restart and reselect my language I scroll down my list of movies and uncheck the offending title.
Anyone else running into this?
Anyone have tips on how to setup an Apple TV for donation (just going to play at a school's extended care with probably no network access).
I don't know of any method for transferring legal ownership of a purchased iTunes movie over to the device so that the school legally owns it (my kids no longer watch those movies), but I'd love to hear any tips of others who've donated their Apple TV and what they did to prepare it with content.
thanks,
StephenI also am having this same issue, to be specific:
I have my AppleTV setup as custom sync and have all movies and music stream to my AppleTV. When I chose to play a movie via the AppleTV remote application on my iPhone (not 3g) I always get a reboot of the AppleTV at some point during the movie playback. If I choose to play the movie from my out of the box remote I do not have crashes. -

What it turned out to be was one of my movies, that played fine on itunes, was somehow corrupted and would crash itunes when accessed by ATV2.
To find out if all your movie files are OK, copy the entire itunes>music>movies folder onto your desktop. Then delete all the moves from itunes. Then add the movies back from your copied folder into the itunes library (you can drag them in, or go through the alias that automatically adds them). For me, when I reached the corrupted movie, it crashed itunes as I was adding it back to the library.
he movie in question (a home movie saved as mp4) seemed fine outside of itunes - it played OK on Quicktime - but somehow couldnt be added to itunes without crashing it. I had to reconvert it, using handbrake, which resulted in an m4v that now works fine.
My guess is that ATV2 attempt to access and create artwork for all the movie files, but when it hits one that is a corrupted, it crashes itunes in doing so. -
ATV2 update / not show up in iTunes devices
Hi all of you who already are enjoying the update.
Does anyone can tell me whether the upgrade took care of the old, widespread problem of ATV not showing up or dropping from the device list in iTunes?I left my iTunes 7.6 sync'ing overnight and throughout the day. ATV2 (MacOS 10.5.1) seems to sync much much slower than AVT1 with 10.5.2.
Anyhow, I returned from work with iTunes in some 'crashed' state: it was responsive, but the itunes store was full of incomplete images and the browse views were incorrect. No devices listed.
I went to turn on my TV connected with ATV2 to find that ATV2 then seems to flicker (renegotiate tv resolution) three times before displaying video. ATV1 did NOT do this. I recall when this (renegotiate tv resolution last night) it resulted in ATV2 reboot (eg, 'sea-of-video' movie playing) on two separate occasions. Does that mean ATV2 needs my 'energy-hog' plasma TV on the whole time while sync'ing?!?! ATV1 did not have this problem!
Then, there were no sync status on ATV2. I returned to reboot iTunes 7.6 to find that it started to sync with ATV2 and then 'devices' not listed. But, ATV2 is busy 'copying' files. When I returned to iTunes 7.6, it seems to 'restart' the sync'ing of the files ATV2 was just copying.
I'm really confused as to what the heck ATV2 is now doing with iTunes 7.6. I'm using the 'default' automatic setting ... I though of giving Apple the 'freshman try' before taking over.
ps I'm also noticing that most of the 'album/preview/poster' are is missing on ATV2 but available while on ATV1. Anyone else notices that? -
I have both an ATV1 and ATV2. For the ATV1, I created video files using Handbrake from home recorded DVDs. I'd make 2 versions of the files, 1 for sync'ing to iPhone/iPod, and 1 for ATV1 (higher quality). I notice if I play the higher quality (i.e. larger) files on ATV2, the video is poorer with vertical lines in it. The iPhone (smaller) files produce better video on ATV2. However, the video quality on the ATV2 is well below watching them on the iMac monitor. Anyone have any recommendations on a better way to create videos for ATV2 from DVDs instead of Handbrake?
To jump in I'm in the same boat. I've been ripping DVD's with HB for years and just updated 2 AppleTV's to the latest models. So I have two ATV2's and one ATV1. The picture quality from all the HB movies on the ATV2 is really bad. I've tried to rip a DVD several times with HB 0.9.4 and the new version 0.9.5 with different presets like ATV2 in HB but the pic quality still stinks. Also using HB 0.9.5 to rip a movie and trying to watch in on ATV1 causes the ATV1 to freeze and crash.
Sooo *** is going on, I loved the quality and ease of HB and ATV1, now I have ATV2, which is cool with Netflix, but not if all my movies are going to look bad.
Anyone figure this out yet?
I'm going to plug in my ATV1 into the same TV and see if the pic quality changes from the ATV2, but there must be a way to get a better quality picture without having to reconvert all your movies, I hope. -
Can't restore my ATV2 - error 1611
Just got an AppleTV 2 and had it set up and running fine. While we were having wifi problems while using it one of the things I tried was a restore of the AppleTV, thinking that was to blame (turned out to be the router). It took me ages to get hold of a microUSB cable but now I think I've bricked it!
Long story short, it downloaded the file, verified it, started to 'prepare' the AppleTV for restore, then crashes with an error code 1611.
Can't find anything particularly useful about this error online. I fear I may have now made it worse by using the remote to try to summon up various recovery modes I've read about.
Any ideas?Well I managed to make it work in the end! I believe what did it was holding down Menu and Down on the silver remote for 10 seconds, then releasing, which remounted the ATV2 in iTunes. I tried to manually restore from the downloaded copy of 4.0 I had and it finally worked!
Until today, when I tried to update to 4.2. It crashed halfway through the installation process (after having downloaded the update, all this done via the ATV2 menus by the way) and when it restarted was still on 4.0. Tried again, same thing, so plugged it back into the Mac and went for a manual restore, first to 4.0, then to 4.2, and both times I'm getting 1611 errors.
That's if it can even communicate with Apple servers to verify the update, which 9 times out of 10 it fails to do.
I think I have to take this one back tomorrow and ask for a new one. I really wanted to try Airplay tonight too! -
After update ATV is very buggy and crashes often
Hulu tends to crash my ATV, usually 2-3 times during the course of a show. This is as bad as Roku.
I also get a very randon screen from time to time asking me for nonsense information. Anyone else getting either crashing from Hulu or the weird message as in the screenshot?
I own two ATV3 and one ATV2 and they all get the same error. Also, I was unable on all of them to even get into Netflix until I deleted all extra profiles via the Netflix site. The View menu has the option for changing which side the Code View is on for Split. It should show as Design View on Left but that will only show if Split Vertically is also selected, otherwise it will say Design View on Top.

ATV2 large library unpleasantness.
Hi folks,
I converted my entire DVD collection to m4v over several year of being an appletv user and now and atv2 user.
The old ATV handled large libraries poorly when streaming, and intact would crash frequently.
I was hoping atv2 would be better. It's not.
Library load times are extremely long. I split most of my library into genres to try to make this better but it's not really helped.
For example, action and adventure has 76 movie in it and takes maybe 3-5 mins to "load". It sits saying "loading". Genres with more movies take much longer, one with 300+ takes 15 mins.
I have approx 3500 movies stored on a RAID connected to a Mac mini and Ethernet into the atv2.
It seems to me like it's attempting to cache thumbnails for the video and it's taking forever. Once it's cached a genre then it's fast (enough) to respond, however switching to Netflix or YouTube blows the cache away and you're back to sq 1.
All sw is up to date, including the atv2. No firewall between the two devices, watching actual packets flow to atv2 with wireshark it seems all the unpleasantness is on the atv2 side.
I think we need a way to either permanently cache these thumbnails of video of switch it off totally because the way it is now it's too frustrating to use.
Anyone else see problems with large libraries ?I'm having the same problems. My music seems to have FINALLY synced up to where it works with the ATV2. I have over 100 gigs of music, and things seem ok. I have about 300-400 videos (all home movies correctly converted to play on ATV2). I've NEVER been able to get them to work via Itunes Home Sharing on either the ATV or the ATV2. The ATV works fine for synced videos, but not streaming. The ATV2 is just a disaster. Worthless. Likewise, ATV2 is unable to sync (endless spinning wheel) my large photo library.
ATV2 clearly has a bug or flaw in it. If you do a search on google for ATV2 spinning wheel there are tons of threads just like this one on different forums. For very person who posts "it works fine," there are 2 people who tell the same "spinning wheel" story.
At lunch a few weeks ago, the ATV2 came up. I was silent. Towo of my co-workers spoke up and described the same problem outlines here. One of them called the ATV2 a $99 black paperweight. I agreed.
Very disappointing.
Either i) the necessary configuration for this thing is so unintuitive and sensitive it is impossible to use (doubtful based on the seeming techinal acumen of many who post they have the spinning wheel problem) or, ii) there is a bug that causes it to not be worth a darn to many purchasers. Whichever is the case, the product currently blows and there needs to be a fix.
BTW, I do seem to be able to Itunes Home Share the exact same library of music, videos, and photos on my IPAD2 using the same network. -
Are the only options to wake up a sleeping ATV2 either using the remote or the remote app? (aside from a re-start). Is it possible to wake it up from iTunes or using the network connection in some way?
Hi ChangeAgent,
FINDER> FILE > FIND
Use the FIND file from the Finder, not Spotlight, to find the folder called Receipts and click on this folder. Scroll down to see if you have this Security Update installed --
Security Update: 2006-008
it may be causing general problems to everyone.
I have only seen this BLUE SCREEN since I installed this security update.
It's the very latest one.
The Blue Screen is not my only problem:
I have had two system crashes (computer waking up with DARWIN window error, fixed when I re-booted).
Scrolling has slowed down in some applications.
The update in Microsoft Office vX was reverted, yesterday I received a message that said: Welcome to Microsoft Office (how can it welcome me when I have been using it every day for the past 15 years?)
Dashboard: It takes 3 minutes for the Widgets to upload.
SOMETHING is not right with this Security Update. Apple, please HELP!
