ATV2 problems...

My ATV2 has recently started having problems picking up our itunes libraries / showing any image / controls on screen.  It can take up to 5 mins (the whole time the screen is black with the spinning clock) when you want to start it.  This happens even when all I want to do is replay an album I've just been playing.  Any ideas how to fix this?

I have the same issue, and I think it started after I updated to iTunes 10.6.3 but can't be certain.
My issue is that if I change AV input on TV and then go back I get the spinning wheel and AppleTV can't connect to iTunes.  It can see the internet so has not lost router connection.  Has yours?
I have to restart iTunes to get it to see the library again.
Always worth unpowering and restarting a problematic AppleTV.
These issues are multifactorial (Winston's system is working perfectly, mine usually does but not recently).  If on wi-fi is there any source of interference that could be causing issues?  Microwave ovens, cordless landline phones, competing networks?

  • ATV2 problems streaming Netflix movies

Lately (even after February software update), hard-wired ATV2 starts/stops/starts every minute or so of first 15-30 minutes of streaming Netflix movies. Unable to stream at all during night of February 13. HELP!

I just purchesed an Apple TV unit about 3 weeks ago. about 12 days in, went to watch something on netflix and was informed that it could not access Netflix. I could look at my instant queue and search for films. When I would choose a film or TV show to watch it stated that it was unable to access Netflix at this time. I contacted Netflix and they said it was an Apple issue, I contacted Apple and they walked me through changing some settings (DNS) which didn't work so we restored those settings. They then had me unplug the apple TV from the wall outlet for one minute. After plugging it back in, everything worked fine. Now in the past 4 days I've had the same issue twice, and resolved the issue by unplugging the Apple TV. I hope that I don't have to keep doing this in the future.

  • "Home Sharing? No Home Sharing."

Home Sharing is not working for me. After reading through these discussions, I'd say there's a chance it's not working for you either.
What I've done for us, here, is compile a list of helpful trouble-shooting tips that I've copied and pasted from other users. Sadly, none of them have worked for me, but perhaps someone will come along and add that one item to the list that will solve my problem. I hope it helps you, and I will certainly report back when I get my problem resolved.
As a reminder, this list is for folks who've already exhausted the obvious resources - like the Apple TV support page etc. - to no avail.
My scenario: (it probably reads similar to yours, so you can skip this part if you want)Purchased the Apple TV last weekend. Setup was easy, connection to my itunes account and network was easy. My wife and I both have iphone 4s, and both can see the Apple TV and I can "airplay" from our iphones to the Apple TV. I have two PCs, both running Windows 7. One houses my primary media library. Neither one of them can "see" the Apple TV, nor can the Apple TV "see" either of those libraries. I spent about an hour and a half with Tech Support. My issue was escalated to "the engineers" and I am currently waiting on a response. I've tried each of the below strategies, but no dice. I am absolutely convinced that the trouble is with Windows 7 and the itunes/quicktime/bonjour Apple Software Package.
    Troubleshooting Ideas/Tips:
    1. "...Then, last night I was trying to get it setup and working and when faced with the same issue I started digging around my Network Settings and changed "Configure IPv6" from "Off" to "Automatically" and like magic, instantly my iTunes Home Sharing showed up on the Apple TV."
    2. "...So I had to go into the firewall advanced security and tell Windows to allow iTunes to send and receive data."
    3. "Ok, I forgot one thing. In the homegroup settings I had to tell it to allow steaming with other devices on the network. this was in the Control Panel, Homegroup. After I saved the update I had to wait for a while till it processed the information before it became available. Hope this helps."
    4. "I remember having a similar problem, it turn out to be a problem with apples BONJOUR service, had to uninstall Bonjour and reinstall it, then turn Home Sharing back on to get it working."
    5. "...Anyway, after setting Norton to allow access to iTunes’ support program, called “Bonjour”, I now enjoy rock-solid Home Sharing performance. If you use Norton, open it, go to "settings", then "miscellaneous settings", then "program exclusions" (hard to find), then use the browser that pops up to find “Bonjour’s” executable program at C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe. Click "Apply", then "OK", then exit. Restart iTunes, and Home Sharing from that computer should work."
    6. "Check Firewall Settings
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with other copies of iTunes.
For Mac OS X 10.5 or later, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall in Apple () menu > System Preferences > Security > Firewall are not set to:
    * Block all incoming connections
    * Allow only essential services
If you use another operating system, firewall software, or hardware, check the documentation on how to open TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353."
    7. "Enabling the photo sharing on one folder did the trick for me. Prior to that I upgraded to iTunes 10.1, disabled and re-enabled home sharing on the PC and the ATV2 and rebooted both."
    8. "Okay, i have had the same issue as many here: updated iTunes, sharing working on iPad and iPhone, but nothing on the appletv. Here's what fixed it for me: 1 open iTunes and confirm sharing settings in preferences. 2. Go back to the iTunes main panel and look for "shared" region of the left toolbar (where it has library, store, shared, and genius headings. For me, i had to click on shared, select "show" from the right of it, and then found a sub-item. I clicked on that, and had to input my password one more time, and finally confirmed I wanted sharing on. After that, the library showed up just fine."
    9. "iPhoto source under iTunes Advanced Menu -> Chose Photos to Share. Once I selected the iPhoto option then it worked."
    10. "...believe I have solved the problem and the problem was in my third party Virus Barrier which blocked internal addresses that demonstrated high activity. The problem was the ATV sending a "flood" of requests to download the library and the Virus Barrier software blocked the address as an intruder. I removed the 192.168.100.xxx address from the virus barrier "connection flood" blocked address, and all works just fine. Hope this solution pertains to others."
    11. "If I open iTunes and enable Home Sharing and authenticate, then "Home Sharing" appears in the Shared section of the left hand pane (same pane that lists Devices, Playlists, etc. If I then click "Done" on the main screen view this "Home Sharing" listing disappears and I can't see the library on the ATV2.
However, if I don't click "Done" and carry one then all's well. I can move around iTunes and do all the normal stuff but as long as I don't close that Home Sharing screen view it works fine."
    12. "Problem solved. Go to iTunes preferences, and under "devices", uncheck the "Look for Remote Speakers connected with Airplay." This seems to confuse Apple TV in syncing with your Library, if you don't have Remote Speakers."
    13. "I followed the advice of posts here, and turned "Sleep" to "Never" and the ATV2 has worked without a hitch for the last week."
    14. "I'm posting this in case it's of use to anyone else. I was unable to get Home Sharing to work at all with my ATV2, I tried all of the suggestions on this thread and others. Eventually I gave up and phoned Apple. Plugging in the ATV straight into my PC solved the problem, but obviously wasn't a usable fix.
Tracked the problem down to my router (Belkin Max). Seems it blocks port 5353 between LAN ports for some strange reason and worse still there's no way to change it. The only solution I could find was to replace the router (luckily at no cost as it was only 3 weeks old) for a linksys router and it all works fine now."
    15. "When I was troubleshooting my ATV2 problem, I turned my firewall completely off. I don't use my Mac's built in firewall. I use NetBarrier X5. NetBarrier also includes functionality called Antivandal. NBX5 allows you to set policies (Buffer Overflow Attacks, Intrusion Attempts, Ping Attacks, Ping Broadcasts, Port Scans and SYN Flooding). I have these policies turned on. When NBX5 detects a policy "violation" it automatically sends the "intruder" to a permanent stop list (at least that is how I have my system configured). Thus, those IP's are permanently blocked. The IP remains blocked even if you turn off the firewall. That was a troubleshooting oversight on my part. I actually ran into the same problem when I was setting up my first ATV a year ago (but I forgot about it - bummer for me). When I checked my stop list, I found two IP addresses that I allow for my home network. Voila."
    16. "I found a fix that was suggested in another thread that seems to have worked for me. If you disable the quality of service (QoS) protocol on your router it seems to connect with no problem."
    - That's it for now. I will try and keep an eye on this post and update when possible. Hopefully, I'll be able to post some good news sometime soon.

Home Sharing is working perfectly fine for me, and I'm quite sure many others. I'm using Windows 7, a Linksys WRT54G router with WPA2 security enabled, and iTunes 10.1.2. It would help if you could answer a few questions:
1- Let's start with the obvious -- what version iTunes are you using? (you need 10.1 but didn't say)
2- Have you enabled Home Sharing on your computer and ATV?
3- What router make and model are you using? I don't know of specific issues here, but others may.
4- Is the ATV hooked up to your router via ethernet, or wireless? If wireless, try ethernet at least temporarily if you can, just to narrow down the problem as it may be a wireless configuration in your router's settings.
5- Using the Remote App on your iPhone, can you control the ATV? Or, can you only stream audio to ATV from your iPhone? If Remote works, can you get to YouTube, Netflix, or the iTunes store and successfully play any content?

  • What is going on with "buffering"?

When I TRY to download a song from the itunes store.....I get "Buffering" and song stops and starts......takes 8 minues to download a song.
    What is going on??????

I went pretty crazy and wrote a number of posts about ATV2 problems. I ended up spending a 100$ I didn't have on a high speed switch so I could hardwire my ATV2 to my Airport Extreme Router. Now, it works properly 9 times out of 10, leaving me generally satisfied, but still realizing there is probably some contributing problem out there in Apple cyberspace. There was an interesting sidelight, though, and I am hoping that a serious techie out there can address this for me and tell me if there could be a problem with my Airport Extreme, Airport Extremes in general, or something that is just characteristic of wireless communication in general. It might have a point of reference for many other posters.
At first I was upset because I was getting those "Ready to play in 2-6 hour messages" even though my Internet connection constantly tested at 15-20 Mbps on my iMac at numerous sites, not fast enough to set fire to my house, but certainly fast enough to avoid these messages. Then I did something I should have done first, I downloaded a Speed Test for my iPad so that I could check what kind of speeds were actually being received by my IPad at the same exact distance from the router as my Apple TV2. What I found was insane fluctuation. I did tests every 30 sec. for a half an hour. What I discovered was that my download connect speeds were changing radically every single time I tested it, going back and forth from speeds as fast as 16 Mbps to as slow as 1 Mbps. That undoubtedly had to have raised havoc with Apple TV's ability to download the movie. Since the speeds on my iMac were constant, something was happening to the signals that left my router. Is this a common wireless router problem, a common Airport Extreme problem, or a problem with my specific router? Techies out there might be able to tell us if such fluctuations in speed for those who connect wirelessly might in part contribute to the problems that caused all these threads.

  • ICloud Photos - Terms & Conditions Loop

    Apple TV Model MD199BZ/A
    Hi guys,
I updated the firmware of my Apple TV yesterday to 6.0 (6646.65) and now I cannot connect to the new "iCloud Photos" which replaced the old "Photos". It just keep showing the new iCloud Terms and Conditions, and if select Agree it just loops back to Terms and Conditions again. I tried scrolling down all the way to the bottom before hitting Agree, but it just keep showing iCloud T&C and never connects... What should I do?

I am using ATV2, problem with iCloud ID/Password when accepting Conditions there is a loop to accept them again, and again and again
Password is correct as in other devices, iTunes password/ID is the same and this one has no problem
No problem reported with Macbook Air 2012, nor with iPad,2 nor with iPhone 5, only with ATV2 after the newsest update
    Thanks

  • My Apple TV is losing connection to my network

I've had the Apple TV 2 for several months, and it's been working flawlessly until a couple of weeks ago, when it started losing connection to my home network. In other words, I turn it on and I can't use it until I reconnect to my wi-fi password, etc. This never happened at all until a week or two ago, and it's happening nearly every day--once I reconnect it's fine, but the next day or so I have to re-enter my wi-fi password, a major annoyance. I have a feeling my router may be experiencing some problems, but still wondered if anyone else has this problem and if so, how it was resolved. In the past if I had any operational problem, just unplugging it and plugging it back in works fine, but this is a completely different issue, one of connectivity, and seems specific to the Apple TV and not necessarily any of my other internet devices. Once reconnected, BTW, all my previous settings seem to be intact.
    Thanks.

I'm having the same trouble as the OP, started around the same time.  AppleTV 2nd gen losing wifi PW about once a day.
    *  The only recent infrastructure change was me converting from ISP-provided wifi (2.4ghz "G") to an Airport Extreme (5ghz "N").  That's been working perfectly since April, and this ATV2 problem started only a couple of weeks ago (early July)
    *  I am the only 5ghz user around here.  Yes, I checked with inSSIDer.  Yes my PC is on the 5ghz band too.
    *  I haven't actually timed it, but it seems to happen almost exactly 24 hours apart - in my case it happens during the hour I'm out walking.
    *  I don't believe it's associated with sleep mode.  Mine is set to 4 hours, and:
---  I can pause a TV show, go walk for an hour, then come back and it's d/c'ed
---  I can pause a TV show after a reconnect, go to sleep for the night, wake up, wake the ATV2, and it resumes with no problems.

  • Losing connection to my network, drops mine, goes to Guest

I am constantly loosing my connection to my network.  It drops back to "Guest Network."  This is causing my Time Machine to not back up until I go to the menu and reselect my personal network.

  • My Atv2 is  very slow movies and shows take forever to load it plays for a few minutes then pauses again. I thought if was a problem with my wireless router but I replaced it with a new airport extreme and the problem persists. Air play is just as slow.

My Atv2 is very slow with both AirPlay and rented and purchased content I spoke to apple rep and tried the things he suggested but the problem persists. Now it requires more lead time then the lenght of material being viewed. I haves broadband internet connection and airport extreme router so I don't think this should be a problem. Lately every time the unit goes to the screen saver an error message come up saying there was an error while loading content please try again later and you have to all over again. It is extremely frustrating. Any suggestions? What speed of transfer should I expect using AirPlay ?

I'm having the same issue.  Ay fixes?  Bought ATV today, music streams but videos don't and mirroring doesn't work either.  Start mirror and severe lag then just drops.  Been trying for couple hours. About ready to return it.

  • Home sharing problems ATV2, Itunes 10.6.3.25

    This is the situation
Apple TV shows up GRAYED OUT in Airplay speakers list
ATV2 does not show up as an option in iOS remote (iPhone 4)
Home Sharing IS enabled both in iTunes and Apple TV
network appears to be fine-- can get all other content availble through ATV2, including music via Match

Same thing here except I'm not running server software on the Mac Mini. The Apple support person said that iTunes is the same, server or not. He recommeded setting sleep to never, but I get the same connection problems. I also automatically restart the Mini and relaunch iTunes on startup every morning at 6 AM. And, as with your experience, the only temporary solution is to quit and restart iTunes at the time that I want to connect. Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad all have the same connection problem. My only hope at this point is 10.8. I have to say, 10.7 has never behaved better than a beta release. I hope they took a little more time with Mountain Lion.
Sorry I don't have a solution. I wanted to add my name to the list and hope someone out there has some insight to share.

  • IPad to ATV2 audio problem

Hi to all. This is my first message.
I have an IPad 64 3G and yesterday i buyed an Apple tv 2.
I work in wifi and video, photo, podcast work fine from iPad to' atv2 but if i try to use the IPod app (from iPad) for my music that is on iPad, this NOT WORK !!! And i must to power off the iPad if i want to use it to browsing again !
The iOS iPad is 4.2.1 and atv2 is 4.1.1.
    Can you Help me ?
    Thanks a lot.
    Pivo

In regards to the browser slowness, that would be an iPad problem. Have you tried posting in that section?
Airplay from the browser is not fully supported as of yet, only native music/video player and youtube
This will expand with the next update
I have an iPhone and use the iPod app to airplay to ATV2 all the time with no issues
So I don't know if that means there's a problem with iPad in general or if it's in your setup, someone with the device would have to chime in there.

  • ATV2 "authorization" problem

So, I purchased an ATV2 at Heathrpw airport before I left UK as well as a cheap (£14.95) HDMI cable.
I wanted to use the ATV2 in my home in Switzerland and purchased a Sony Bravia TV to watch it on.
    1. My first problem, when streaming content from my iTunes is that the ATV2 sometimes gets "disconnected" from the television, i.e. I see the blnk HDMI1 screen for a split second, then it reconnects.
    2. Second problem is that after about 15 minutes of watching anything on my ATV2, the picture turns to a combination of pink and blue, the picture is still visible but i have never seens anything like this.
    3. third and most annoying problem: I rented a movie directly from ATV2 last night (with my UK iTunes account), paid for it, and when it pops up on the screen saying it is ready to be watched, I pressed play but it loads, then authorizes and then a message appears that "this device is not authorized to play this content".
I thought that perhaps this was one movie, so I rented a second one. When that didnt work, I figured it may be because I am in Switzerland and using a UK iTunes account, so I logged into my swiss one and rented something else. To no avail!
*Things I have done to try and fix the problems*
    1. I have authorized and de-authorized my computer
    2. I have reset the ATV2 to its factory settings
    3. I have tried Swiss as well as UK iTunes accounts to rent movies
This is increedibly frustrating and I hope someone can help! Thank you in advance!

I too got an ATV 2 very recently. From my iMac I can order movies and watch them (as well as music, etc.). From my MacBook Pro I can do all except stream movies. Every time I try something new on the MacBook Pro (I keep buying the same two movies, so "they" know I am sincere), I get authorization problems.
    1. REMOTE: I can preview but not watch ATV 2 movies using the remote: "your apple tv is not authorized to play this content."
    2. MACBOOK PRO: I cannot use my macbook pro itunes to order and watch movies (music yes, movies no): "Authorization is required..." even though I have authorized/reauthorized the laptop 10 times. And I have reset/restored ATV 2.
    3. IMAC: I can use my iMac itunes to order movies. I then choose that computer on the ATV 2 screen and movies stream.

  • Are my problems related to ATV2 upgrade?

Hadn't used my ATV2 for a while, but the Remote app on iPhone and iPad showed it there yesterday morning, as well as my Library.  However, when I switched ATV2 on to watch a video I'd put on iTunes, I got no signal from it on my television. The HDMI socket on the tv is fine - my DVD player worked on it when tried.
Apple TV box was responding to its remote control, but displaying nothing on screen. I tried resetting from the remote. Got the correct sequence of flashing light on the ATV2 but still nothing on the TV screen.
It was then that I noticed that the Apple TV wasn't showing in the Airplay optons on iTunes, and had stopped showing on the iPhone and iPad remote apps. After lots of plugging, unplugging, trying other HDMI ports on my tv, unplugging power, rebooting network, etc I was no further forward, so I connected the ATV2 directly by USB to iTunes on my iMac and restored it to factory settings. This is a process which I understand also installs the latest software version.
However, still nothing. I get nothing whatsoever on screen from the ATV2 - no logo, nothing but a blank screen. And the ATV2 still does not show in my Airplay options in iTunes.
I've been reading that the latest software update may be yet amother turkey from Apple. Is this likely to be the source of my problems too?
    Cheers,
    Tom

    Result!
Although the devices I have attached to my TV using the other two HDMI inputs work perfectly, I did the one thing I had not tried to do before, which was to swap all the HDMI leads around to different devices.
Curiously, the lead I had on my ATV2 box works fine on my DVD player and, guess what? The lead that was on the DVD player works with the ATV2. Whoop of joy when the Apple logo appeared, followed by flawless set up process.
All problems now solved. ATV2 connected, successfully logged on to home network, and appearing in the Airport settings on iTunes as well as on the Remote app.
I have no idea why the original HDMI lead failed on the ATV2, nor why it works on my DVD player, but frankly, who cares? Issue now solved.
Winston Churchill, thanks for your interest and suggestions. Off now to cancel my Genius Bar appointment.

  • ATV2 and Airfoil recognition problems

Hello all. I'm hoping you can help me out here... I'm running the new Apple TV and it's working fine through my wireless Airport Extreme. It recognises my computer and will play the contents of my iTunes library without any problems (and I'm liking it a lot!).
However, I can't get Airfoil to recognise it. This is odd because I tried the free demo of Airfoil and it seemed to work fine but then I purchased a license (primarily to allow me to route Spotify through the ATV and into the home audio setup) and now the ATV just won't appear on the Airfoil list of devices.
I realise that this is almost definitely an Airfoil issue and that that is a third party app but I'm not getting any joy from them and I know a lot of you use Airfoil - So I thought it worth an enquiry...
    Any ideas?

Hi, I'm having the same issue although I have installed the latest update today. Could you be more specific about "fixed by the good people at Airfoil"? Thanks
Update: Strange... I just checked it again and now Airfoil is showing one of my two ATV2. Really weird, however, is that iTunes now only shows my Airport Express and none of my ATV2s. From my iPad I can select all devices without problems.

  • I have been watching videos from my ipad via ATV2 with no problems.  As of yesterday my videos just keep loading and don't play.  I don't think I have done anything differently.  Does anyone know how to fix this.  I have tried unplugging it

Hi, I have been watching videos from my ipad via ATV2 with no problems for over a year.  As of yesterday my videos just keep loading and don't play.  I don't think I have done anything differently.  Does anyone know how to fix this.  I have tried unplugging it waiting 30secs and then plugging it back in.  I have tried restarting, updating and reseting but nothing is working.  It's quite frustrating!!!! Any suggestions????

I have taken it back to the Apple store genius bar, but they say they don't see anything wrong. Well unless you use it all day and experience the problems when they happen, you wont see anything wrong. But there are lots wrong with it. But this would be the same store as I purchased the phone. And they backed up my old Iphone 4, but were not able to get anything to load back onto my new phone. So, I lost pretty much everything. But over time, some of my contacts have started showing up, although i am still missing over 800 of them.
