ATV2 Update?

My ATV2 is working flawlessly, synced with iPad 2, Netflix (streaming great), etc.
My question:
When using the ATV2 I get a message that an update is available and gives me the option to either update or remind me later.  I have been picking "later".
Is there any reason to update the ATV2 if everything is running great?  Why fix if not broken....:-)
Thanks.

the last update fixed a couple of things but didn't introduce new features, if you don't want to install it you can opt not to, it's up to you.

  • ATV2 update problem not showing on tv

My atv2 updates fine with the microusb,  the update goes fine then finishes and says connect to the tv. When i plug the atv into the tv, i get no picture it just goes to the tvs blank blue hdmi screen. It doesnt even show the connect to itunes screen any ideas on how to fix this or is the unit bricked and not able to be fixed?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
You may wish to try the following:
Press and hold the menu and the up button simultaneously on the remote for six seconds, the Apple TV should then begin to cycle through the various resolutions available to it. If you see a picture appear up on your screen, use the remote to scroll down to the OK option and select it.

  • ATV2 update / not show up in iTunes devices

Hi all of you who already are enjoying the update.
Does anyone can tell me whether the upgrade took care of the old, widespread problem of ATV not showing up or dropping from the device list in iTunes?

I left my iTunes 7.6 sync'ing overnight and throughout the day. ATV2 (MacOS 10.5.1) seems to sync much much slower than AVT1 with 10.5.2.
Anyhow, I returned from work with iTunes in some 'crashed' state: it was responsive, but the itunes store was full of incomplete images and the browse views were incorrect. No devices listed.
I went to turn on my TV connected with ATV2 to find that ATV2 then seems to flicker (renegotiate tv resolution) three times before displaying video. ATV1 did NOT do this. I recall when this (renegotiate tv resolution last night) it resulted in ATV2 reboot (eg, 'sea-of-video' movie playing) on two separate occasions. Does that mean ATV2 needs my 'energy-hog' plasma TV on the whole time while sync'ing?!?! ATV1 did not have this problem!
Then, there were no sync status on ATV2. I returned to reboot iTunes 7.6 to find that it started to sync with ATV2 and then 'devices' not listed. But, ATV2 is busy 'copying' files. When I returned to iTunes 7.6, it seems to 'restart' the sync'ing of the files ATV2 was just copying.
I'm really confused as to what the heck ATV2 is now doing with iTunes 7.6. I'm using the 'default' automatic setting ... I though of giving Apple the 'freshman try' before taking over.
ps I'm also noticing that most of the 'album/preview/poster' are is missing on ATV2 but available while on ATV1. Anyone else notices that?

  • No Home Sharing after latest ATV2 update?

I've been having incredibly annoying problems with Home Sharing for some time - ATV2 ethernet to wireless modem, iMac (latest version of Snow Leopard) connected to both via wireless.  If I start both up from sleep, I generally have to quit iTunes on the iMac in order to start Home Sharing on the ATV2; and then every now and again I'll get kicked off in the middle of a playlist, and have to turn off and on Home Sharing and restart iTunes in order to re-establish connection.  I spoke with Apple Tech Support before my 3-month period ran out; they recommended checking for some specific ports on the router, which I did, but in the end that made no difference at all.
Now after the latest update, the ATV2 won't connect to my iTunes library at all.  It says "xxx's Library" on the main screen as thought it "recognizes" it, but no recently-played albums will appear on the top of the screen.  However when I click on my Library, I just get a spinning wheel for 30 seconds and then it kicks me back out to the main screen.
I've logged out and in of my Apple account on both devices, restarted both, & etc.  Nothing.  What gives?  This is incredibly annoying.
    Thanks.

I too have the same problem.  Cannot log into Home Sharing.  Cannot log into iTunes.  I have done the things suggested by others in another thread.  Reset router, reset switch, rebooted computer with shared iTunes.  Nothing works.  I have three ATV2's and two have this issue.  So far, the other does not.  There is no rhyme or reason.  I have also reset and restored the ATV to no avail.
I was able to stream to the ATV via airplay.  Go figure...
    Might try that...

  • HT202157 Where can I manually download the newest ATV2 update?

I cannot update my ATV2.  It says it is  running version 5.0(4032.1), but it is not the new software shown today.  Autoupdate says it is up to date, restoring it fails: "Apple TV can't download the latest update right now. Try again later.", and restoring via iTunes fails after downloading the update because "The network connection was reset." even though the internet is working just fine and I tired the same update several times and got the same result.
Can I manually download the new update and then restore from that?  I am unable to find anywhere to download it.

there are a few other posts where people couldn't download the update right away (servers being slammed most likely).  Try it again today, you can also try unplugging the Atv for a minute or two and plugging it back in and trying to find/download the update again.

  • Bit of a strange one.... HD Movies "Judder" when streaming to ATV2

Bit of a strange one.... all my HD Movies since the latest ATV2 update "Judder" when streaming.
It's very hard to describe but whenever there is a fast Zoom or Pan shot the image flickers for around half a second. It seems to happen every 20 seconds or so, this has only been the case since the latest update of ATV2.
I purchased Tron Legacy (HD) from the iTunes store and it occurs when playing that movie. It also happens on all my self generated HD contect.
Strangely it does not occur when streaming to my 1st Gen Apple TV, which makes me think it has nothing to do with my Home Network setup, as they are both connected via Ethernet cables.
There is only a problem with HD Streaming and ATV2.
    Any assistance would be appriciated
    Hans

The last update seems to have introduced a feature which lets the Apple TV detect the native frequency of your TV, in the UK this is probably but not always 50 Hz, this is beneficial for Home video and broadcast content in these locations where the frame rate is 25 fps. It isn't ideal for 30 fps or 24 fps content though which most of the iTMS movies and TV shows are.
Also of relevance is that some TV's make a better job of telecine/detelecine than others due to the quality of their components.
Although I don't necessarily think that Apple are responsible for the ability of 3rd party TV's, the problem could be easily overcome by allowing the user to manually select the Apple TV output as was the case with the Apple TV 1. This would allow the user to switch to 60 Hz for 30/24 fps content and 50 Hz for 25 fps content.
Some TV's have motion settings which worsen/improve the situation depending on their settings.

  • ITunes not working with ATV2,

So, I can't seem to get my iTunes to share with Apple TV. Everything else works fine though, like netflix, and iCloud. I've checked to make sure that Home Sharing is turned on on both devices. I've tried resetting the ATV2, updated it too. I'm out of ideas, any help?

Toggle wifi on and off in your computer, that has helped me in the past.

  • Ethernet and ATV2

Recently my ATV2 updated itself to iOS 5.3. Lo and behold the thernet connection I'd been relying on to make the thing work properly stopped working all together.
What happens? The ethernet connection shows an IP 169.x.x.x. If I plug the same cable into my laptop it works fine and the IP is in the normal range for my network. So it isn't likely to be a problem with the router.
The ATV works OK on the wireless network, except that, if the computer goes to sleep, the AirPlay connection is lost and I have to restart the ATV to restore the connection (see the dicussion here, https://discussions.apple.com/message/21514171#21514171).
To make matters worse, I don;t seem to be able to restore an earlier version of the TVs iOS.
    Can anyone help?

I found exactly the same problem and discovered the issued disappeared when I "quit" all "downloading" programs whilst watching TV via ATV2. The issue was particularly frequent when i was watching while downloading using my torrent client (utorrent). Quitting this resulted in a immediate an permanent improvement provided the torrent client remained closed. Interestingly it did not seem to affect, to the same degree listening to music through iTunes while downloading!
After experimenting I also noted that the problem existed, albeit less frequently, when i was downloading movies from the iTunes store. I experimented with a variety of Apple and non-Apple routers and ethernet cables. As long as i was downloading there was an issue using the ATV. For what its worth I also noted that when the ATV2 went awry it also occasionally coincided with a temporary outage on my ADSL connection. After all the experimenting i have concluded its the ATV2 that is the route cause and not the router/network arrangement etc.
Anyone want to try fixing the problem this way? i cant believe that its a coincidence.

  • Homeshare what a great idea it could have been!

Ok got it ATV2 updated through my macbook by doing a restore. Funny thing is and the one thing I was so excited about seeing apple fix is still a disaster. Play 2 songs via Itunes on my ATV2 and the connection drops. Home share/lion is just ridiculous.

Hi, I've got my router hardwired to my ATV2. I'll try changing channels see what happens. It is definately my router as i'm at the office and my computers wi-fi is working fine. I can even put my macbook into sleep mode and take it out and it reconnects. Just have to suss out the router!

  • Error upgrading to iOS 4.2 now iPad is bricked??

I tried to update to the new 4.2 and had an error right at the end now all it does is give the sync to iTunes popup. I can't restore or do anything. I even tried to restore on another computer and that didn't work. I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it but that also didn't work. Tech said try as a Guest user and still nothing. I followed the steps given when error 1002 came up and nothing is working. Anyone know what I can do to atleast get it out of activation mode???

Both the ipad and ipod were able to be restored/updated to 4.2 from my work computer, windows XP on both. I have no idea why this worked. I even tried booting in safe mode and using itunes and it would not work from home.
Now I just need to go home and complete the "new" ipod/ipad setup by copying from my backups there.
BTW the ATV2 update was the fastest simplest update with no issues that are reported elsewhere.

  • Itunes Airplay to Apple TV Audio Latency

    Hello,
Not sure if there is an issue or if this is just inherent, is it common that there is a 4-5 second delay for audio to begin playing when switching songs from my Mac over Airplay to my Apple TV?
I have tested this over ethernet and wifi, with the same delay. I have an airport extreme, so I don't think the router is the issue.
Just a bit annoying when you keep skipping songs to find a specific one with 5 second delays, gets tedious.
    Any help is much obliged!

Did you ever resolve this issue?  It just started happening to me with the last ATV2 update / iTunes update.
Unfortunately I don't know which update caused it, becausse it was all inconjuction with the 'iCloud' update...
My current set up is an ATV2, airplay from 27" iMac with Caldigit 4TB external which houses my iTunes library.  I have been running this setup for over a year without delay, then all of a sudden - poof - delay.
The delay isn't just music - it's EVERYTHING from iTunes libarary - movies, tv shows, music...anything...
No delay using Airplay from any portable devices, such as iPad or iPhone, just from iTunes library.  It's not the end of the world, eventualluy everything IS in sync...just annoying/suspicious...
    Thanks..

  • IPhone 4S finicky mirroring to AppleTV

Having issues with mirroring iPhone 4S (iOS5) mirrored to AppleTV2 (4.4). The mirroring feature doesn't seem to work as advertised for me. It stutters a lot or the image freezes and the sound continues to play. So, mirroring becomes pretty much useless and unstable.
I tried mirroring several different games. I thought it might be a bandwidth or signal issue. The wireless signal on the iPhone 4S does seem to fluxuate the local wireless signal, but the ATV stays consistent at 4 out of 5 bars. My iPhone 3GS within the same room even holds a consistent full wireless signal.
Even when I'm streaming content from the internet, my download speed is ~15 mbps.
Otherwise, the normal AirPlay feature of sending HTML5 videos from iPhone to ATV works flawless as long as it's not streaming VUDU content.
On a side note, sometimes AirPlay abruptly drops video streaming over a specific period of time. This seems like a bug. I found shutting of autolock within settings solves the issue. But, then disabling autolock completely defeats the purpose of having an autolock option.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

Having similar issues with my iPhone 4S. No problems with airplay and photostream works fine. Air mirroring works to start with but always after about 10minutes it stops working.
Whats confusing me is that when it does it kicks every device on my wireless network off requiring me reset my router then all is well. At the same time it does this the air mirroring option dissapears completely from iphone 4S ( perhaps wifi lost and this is the first sign of it? )
I'm reluctant to start messing with router settings and its not at all in keeping with my experience of Apple over last few years where everything ' just works'.
I've done all the ATV2 updates today x2 and required me to put in all my details again so I think ( but need to check ) that its now on 4.4 or higher. I had hopes this would fix it but seemingly not.
Is it worth ringing Apple helpline for stuff like this? Never have done before.

  • Ripping the last two tracks goes on forever

I did the latest Software Update, had the same problems as many others but got them fixed at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=308623&tstart=0 But now iTunes 6.0.2 stops ripping the last two tracks of a CD (V/A - Dub Chill Out MCCD 265). I've tried it again with error correction switched off in prefs but still no joy.

There was an issue: read this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4107
There just isn't a way for the ATV2 updater to have done this automatically. There was documentation online telling users to reset first. But, of course most folks didn't know.

  • During update my ATV2 displayed icon to connect to iTunes. Now I have nothing -- can't even get to menu to do restart and ATV2 doesn't show up in iTunes menu to do restart from there. Help!

During update my ATV2 displayed icon to connect to iTunes. Now I have nothing -- can't even get to menu to do restart and ATV2 doesn't show up in iTunes menu to do restart from there. Help!

    The update didn't apply correctly.
Did you follow the steps exactly in order to restore? disconnect all cables, open iTunes, then connect micro usb
Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation): Restoring your Apple TV
Make sure to connect directly to computer, not a keyboard port or USB hub. Try a different cable.
