ATV2 upsamples 44.1K CD to 48K

From ATV2 optical audio output my DAC lights up 48K when I'm streaming my ripped CDs (lossless) which are all 44.1K. The Airport Express previously in the exact position streamed at 44.1K. with the corresponding light lit.
I wrote one of the designers who I know at the manufacturer (Bryston) and here is his reply:
"""I would prefer not to have the bitstream converted from 44K1 to 48K, as this
is not an even multiplication, but there may be no choice in the matter, unless you can force the Apple TV to output 44K1. I don't know that this conversion will cause artifacts for sure, but the possibility is there."""
The DAC itself has an optional upsample button that doubles the input resolution.
Any audiophiles or audio technicians care to weigh in on this? What artifacts would be introduced by upsampling twice? Is the original signal being compromised by being changed initially?
I am speaking purely audio… from iTunes to ATV to my stereo. No TV involved.

I am also uncomfortable with this upsampling.
I don't have an atv2 yet but this will result in interpolation of virtually every sample after the 1st, so you won't hear the proper lossless bitstream at all.
Many people may not care or hear a difference but that's not the point, it should at least be able to output 44.1kHz material as is, compressed source or not.

  • IPad remote for ATV2 not listing TV programmes in order, plays wrong programme.

    Hi,
I took delivery of an ATV2, and connected it via Ethernet to my home network. All works well with the supplied remote. However, if using the iPad remote app there is a problem.
The iPad remote app lists a series TV programmes, but if you choose a programme another programme from the series plays instead. It appears that the remote app program order list does not mirror the iTunes program order list, so you choose, for example, the third program in the remote app list, but instead the third program in the iTunes list plays. I am completely unable to decide how the remote app is ordering the programs, and have been unable to make the remote app and iTunes agree on the order.
Any ideas? It is hugely irritating.

The new software uses the dynamic Freeview EPG. This means it picks up channel start and times of programmes even if running late, the quality of this is down the broadcaster and not BT. 5 doesn't do it very well at all. So there is no need of padding. Provided the broadcaster sets it up properly it will also pick up returning series.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Have you tried the 'Purchased' option in the top right corner of the Store window in iTunes

I purchased a movie on the AppleTV 2 but it is not showing up in iTunes on my desktop computer. How can I sync? (have lastest version of iTunes and ATV2 software)

Of course it always works, what are you talking about.
I appreciate that re-downloading is only available in the US and then only with certain content. However content that cannot be re-downloaded is not offered for purchase on the Apple TV.

  • DVD from IMac  or MacBook to ATV2

Is it possible to play a DVD movie inserted into an IMac or MacBook on a HDTV through an ATV2?

    no

  • Can I use ATV2 with a NAS?

Can I use the Apple TV 2 with a NAS?
I currently have all my DVD collection (TV shows & movies) ripped into an iTunes library that is stored on an external HDD on my laptop.
When I want to watch something on my AppleTV, I ensure my laptop is connected to the same WiFi network as my ATV (I have three WiFi networks in my house) and I start iTunes and ensure Home Sharing is on.  Then the AppleTV can see my laptop's iTunes library and I can watch my media without any problem.
The issue is that for work I need to connect to a different WiFi network.  This means I'm constantly having to go into another room, change the WiFi network my laptop is using, launch iTunes and confirm Home Sharing is working.  Sometimes the AppleTV simply doesn't see my laptop.  I have to stop and restart Home Sharing etc.
It would be MUCH easier if I could simply have my iTunes library (ie, all my ripped TV shows & movies) simply running off a NAS.  I know you can get some NAS drives with "iTunes Servers" in them.  Does this mean I can simply configure the AppleTV to use that instead of my laptop running iTunes?  Ideally I would like to avoid having to run iTunes on my laptop just so I can watch movies I've already ripped and stored on a HDD somewhere.
Is this possible, or am I stuck with having to run iTunes on a computer somewhere for the AppleTV to work?
Also, any idea why the AppleTV seems to randomly just stop seeing my laptop running iTunes with Home Sharing anyway?  I need to stop & start Home Sharing regularly which is very frustrating.

I went the NAS route with the goal of getting all my iPhoto libraries (new one each year) off the computer (filling up) and not having an external HD connected to my nice and neat iMac.  That seems to have been a failing proposition.  Even though I can use the iPhoto library, doing it over wifi has been a chore.  It's okay on the computer directly connected via ethernet to the network hub where the NAS is.  BUT, another goal of buying the ATV2 was to be able to show all of those spiffy pics of our son to the grandparents when they came to visit.  I have yet to get ATV2 to play the photos that are stored on the NAS - even though all the home sharing stuff is set up correctly, iTunes is running (seems a dumb way to see my iPhoto library), and all the other settings.  It simply seems to be unable to play the photos from the NAS - even though the computer can.
And don't get me started about not being able to play any of the hundreds of avi movie container/files produced by our Canon PowerShot camera.  Movies that play absolutely fine on the iMac with no special software (beyond quicktime).
My NAS is becoming more and more a place to just do backups and the merged library functionality of sharing between multiple computes and iOS devices seems to be a lost cause.  very frustrating.

  • Can I use 2 different iPhones (and iTunes libraries) with one ATV2?  How?

My wife and I just bought an ATV2. We both have and use iPhone 3Gs's. I installed the remote app on both phones, but I am only able to control the ATV2 with the first phone I synced with ATV2. It doesn't seem that ATV2 cares what library it links to since the user has to turn on "Home Sharing" in their individual iTunes account. ATV2 appears to be set up so that you can choose what library you want to use (Under the settings). So can I use two different iPhones with one ATV2?

You can home-share multiple libraries but only use one account at a time. So both phones would need to be signed in under the same apple ID.

  • Can Atv1 and Atv2 sync with the same itunes library?

I have imac running snow leopard. It was working perfectly well wit my Atv1. I decided to buy Atv2 for airplay function. Since I installed Atv2 icannot find my Atv1. What is more after resetting my Atv1 I cannot find it under 'Devices' in Itunes. It connects to the internet and my network. I can login to the itunes shop and download and watch movies etc. But I cannot register it with my itunes library and imac. Atv1 annAtv2 with same itunes library is it possible or is it uncompatible.?

    Quite possible.
You may need to disconnect the 'connection' and reconnect on AppleTV1 in Settings>Computers.
If a sync (content in My Music not My Shared Music etc) connection AppleTV will be wiped clean of media in preparation for a new sync library.
There may be other factors at play (securtiy software, firewalls, corrupt iTunes/other software installation).
Also worth restarting router, computer, itunes and AppleTV.

  • ATV2 via ethernet to imac with no internet access - possible?

I have the ATV2 and its works great - and i can use it for streaming my own films that we have produced and encoded to mp4 - straight to my 36 inch TV in our living room...
...BUT I want to take my 36 inch TV with my iMac to a wedding exhibition and play my films on my 36 inch tv from my iMac - so i thought connect why dont i connect my ATV2 via an ethernet cable to my iMac then HMDI cable from the AVT2 to the TV and i should be able to access all the film content that is in iTunes as HD mp4 content on my iMac so prospective clients can see mp4 HD versions of our films -  as at the exhibition they will be viewing them from about 3 feet away rather than the usual 10 -12 feet when viewing a DVD at home.
Would this work anyone tried it? i have read some folks have had problems doing this as they need to have internet access as they are accessing their .mac account for home sharing and with no internet avaibale i wont have that facility and dont need it at the exhibition.

Yes, I'd certainly try it before you go. I've tested this on the Apple TV 1 and confirmed it works but haven't tested it with my Apple TV 2.
If worst comes to worst using a cheap router will work, you don't need to connect it to the internet.

  • How do I arrange photos in ATV2 slideshow

How do I arrange photos in ATV2 slideshow?

Thanks, that is what I am doing and it works.  But when the folder contents are displayed for Slideshow, the photos are not in the order that I want.  I can't figure out what controls the order in Slideshow because it is different from the order in the original folder and doesn't correlate with any of the columns (eg, Name, Date Created, etc). It seems like there is a random element in the transmission from iTunes to Apple TV, but that doesn't make sense.

  • Is the ATV2 a true Apple Appliance or a Toy?

Having spent a few hours studying all the problems that people are having, I am amazed at the difficulty the ATV2 is causing. It was supposed to be the transformational device that did not replicate the problems of the ATV1 which was a "hobby" device.
I have lived with ATVs since inception. I have 4 running now and after living with the ATV2 for a few weeks, I went out and bought a spare ATV1.
Near as I can tell, no one in their right mind would ask a non computer literate person to use the ATV2. My wife has come to hate it and refuses to use it. Yet she uses the ATV1 "hobby" devices with no problems and loves them!
I use my 4 ATVs as streaming devices, with the exception of pictures. We load them up with family pictures and do slideshow as screen saver and while streaming music from ITUNES for many hours a day.
It took me about half an hour to figure out how to get the streaming / sharing to work with the ATV2. Tricky of the design team to make it so you have to do a little on line research to figure out that a feature of ITUNES is you have to activate home sharing in multiple places to get it to actually share. I can see grandma doing that and going out to write a great report on the ATV2!
Once I got the ATV2 associated with my home library, imagine my surprise when I learned through experience that the thing has to RELOAD the library data EVERY time you use it! And in a single session if you switch from . . . say a TV show to a movie. What a great feature. Since my library is currently at 4 TERABITES, that little wait while the ATV2 finds out what TV shows or movies are out there are really enjoyable. I plan tasks, like rotating the tires on one of the cars for these little opportunities.
Why couldnt Apple designers just come up with a smaller, leaner, cheaper streaming version of the current ATV? It works great in streaming mode.
Hopefully some day they will see the light and transform the ATV2 into a useful device. But it is not right now.
I am buying up a bunch of ATV1s to keep me going for the next few years until someone comes out with a better solution or Apple sees the light.

I've put mine in the kitchen where we tend to watch content from the computer a little less.
The grouping of content has been a bit of a nightmare, I've had around 1,000 home videos listed individually amongst around about 300 commercial titles in movies and 14 seasons of Frost all listed separately along with many other similar scenarios in tv shows. With a lot of content, this all becomes difficult to navigate.
I've always been able to stream HD content flawlessly by wifi to my first generation Apple tv, in fact I could do so to several at the same time, so the second generation model holds no advantages there. Although I've found that the second generation model has issues connecting to the itms store occasionally, when my macs and my first generation models don't.
Buying from iTunes isn't the end of the world, but of course I now need to let it download fully before I can stream to the Apple tv, thankfully we don't do this in the kitchen all that much.
On the reloading issue, no it doesn't take more than a few moments but it's always there when you move from menu to menu, it wasn't there at all on the first generation model.

  • How to use ATV2 with iTunes, DAC and Apple remote

    Hello,
I play my iTunes library through a Wadia i170 dock connected to a Cambridge Audio DacMagic running through a Marantz AV preamp. I bought an ATV2 and I would like to control the music with an iPad using the Apple Remote app.  My ATV is connected to the Marantz via HDMI and i have another HDMI cable running to the TV. Is it possible to do this?
    Thanks!

If you enable Home Sharing in itunes, on iPad and AppleTV then Remote app will allow you to browse itunes content from the iTunes library and play it back on AppleTV using Airplay.  Alternatively the Remote app can control the AppleTV interface directly with iAppleTV requesting/pulling content from itunes as opposed to Airplay sending/pusihing content to AppleTV to play.
Not sure where the Wadia dock comes into this.
Do you dock the iPad with it?
I'd have thought you'd be wanting to hook up the AppleTV optical out to the DacMagic if it supports Toslink or use HDMI or optical direct to the AV amp.
Are you trying to run the system 'headless' with TV off when playing audio - if so, recent software has messed things up and not certain if fixed in that absence of an active HDMI connection can disable audio out over optical.

  • Can I use AirPlay with my ATV2 to remote speakers on my network?

I use the internet Radio on my ATV. I was able to use remote speakers through my network and Airplay when my ATV1 was operating. Now using ATV2 and use of remote speakers is not an option any more. Is there a fix?

That is not possible on ATV 2

  • How do i extend airplay to stream music at the same time to AEX and ATV2

I have a new ATV2 and an AEX, my macbook, 2 Ipod touches and an Ipad2.
I figured out how to setup my ATV2 and airplay through my macbook and my touches. My ATV2 is in my living room on a Yamaha 6.1 receiver with 2 channels. I have 6 speakers in my living room on channel A and a speaker in my bathroom on channel B.
So....I decided to grab an extra Bose speaker and bring it to my foyer/kitchen and hook it up to my AEX since i cant hear the music too well when im cooking or in my office from the speakers in the living room.
I setup the AEX to connect direct to the speaker. When Im on Itunes (either mac book or touch) i only get two options to airplay, AEX or ATV2.
My question: How do I extend airplay to stream music on BOTH AEX and ATV2 with the same music at the same time?
    Please and thank you!

As you are already aware both the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) and ATV2 are AirPlay "speakers." When both devices are properly connected to your home's wireless or wired network, both should show up in iTunes as in your case. Also the iTunes AirPlay speaker selector should provide you with an option to choose multiple speakers. As a minimum, you should see: Computer, the AXn, the ATV2, and the Multiple Speakers options. Is this not the case?
