AU filters, and some suggestions for use

I have just discovered the powerfull AU filters for the tracks, and would like some overall suggestions on their use. I have read on many forums and posts on what each one is, but my question is more on the line of when is enough enough, and can you degrade a file, like an image file, by too many filters?
Example one: Podcasts. Plain recording of vocal track with no efffect. After the recording, my thought is too apply the AUlowpass to take out the highend and clean up the sound. Then, maybe the AUMatrixReverb to fill it out.
Then, on the MasterTrack, apply the AUMultiband Compressor to balance the output. Is this something that would be ok?
Example two: Vocal recording project. Apply AUfilter to the backing instramental track to make it the way you want...
Record vocals again plain, vanilla, no effects. After the recording, add AUlowpass if needed, maybe AUGraphicEQ to shape the vocals, then do the MasterTrack effect as above.
I guess I would just like some more suggestions from people in the know on some use of the AU filters and how to do it best.
Thanks,
Cory

First, yes, you can degrade output, because a filter (by definition) changes the signal. However, if you use them carefully, they will enhance the sound. You don't have to worry about signal processing artefacts of too many filters in a row, since the design of the AU filters seems to be quite good. But in the end, your ears have to be the judge: why should you worry about degradation if you like the result?
About the low pass filter: normally, parametric EQ is used to cut specific frequency bands. E.g., if you have some trouble in the higher frequencies, it is unlikely you need to cut all of it, which is what a low pass filter does. This will make your mix sound dull. A parametric EQ can apply a much more precise and subtle edit, and at different places (most mixes also benefit from cutting the higher bass a little bit). EQ can also be used to boost. E.g., a slight increase around 12kHz can give some "air" to the mix.

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • Some Bugs and Enhancement Suggestions for Offline DB models

I really like the way that this area of JDeveloper is shaping up, but I have a couple of bugs and few suggestions for enhancements.
    Bugs,
    1) when adding an index to a table, you can't edit the index name. If the generated name is too long, it doesn't allow you to create the index.
    2) When adding columns to an index, there is no LOV of columns so you have to manually type each one. It always defaults to the ?first column of the primary key? which seems odd.
    A few enhancement suggestions:
    1) on tables and columns it would be very helpful to be able to also have a logical name as well as a physical name
    2) if we have a logical name, it would be then very helpful to be able to set the display properties to show the logical vs. physical table and column names
    3) Tablespace objects. I would be okay if they were just the logical object (not necessarily generate DDL to create them). If I could use them as part of the table and index definitions.
    4) Table partitioning.
    5) Packages on a DB Diagram. Just for the documentation purpose of visually displaying all objects in an application.
    6) Ability to create views based on synonyms. Currently, it only allows to pick a table or view.
Just a few items that I have encountered trying to design a full application in JDeveloper.
    Thanks,
    Gary

Hi I want to attach word documents to yahoo mail app  and some job portals using iPad  I don't know how to attach it can u ppl help me thru this issue

would I be able to "upload" (not sure how else to say it) my existing folders and subfolders containing all my emails so that they are all available on my new IMAP service, while still being available on my Mac?
Not easily, no. There's no direct transfer option between POP and IMAP, especially across email providers. The best you could do would be to forward all of your emails to your new address, although it's not clear that you need to - dropping your sbcglobal.net account doesn't instantly render all your existing mail void - it'll still be in your Mail client, you can still read it, search it, etc., it just won't be on your provider's server.
I have toyed with the idea of getting a MobileMe account. Would that solve my issue/question above?
MobileMe would be viable, especially if you're interested in synching your various iOS devices. It's not free, of course, unlike Yahoo and Gmail, although you've already discounted them...
I have also toyed with purchasing my own URL, but it's hard to tell from the sites (1and1, Namecheap, etc.) if they come with IMAP email accounts included.
Some registrars offer email hosting bundles with a domain registration. This could be a good way to go. GoDaddy, for example, have a email hosting option for domains you register with them.

Basically you would need Acrobat. However, it is now also possible to create basic form fields using just the free Reader. In fact, I've been working on a tool that allows you to do it, so if you're interested in it please contact me privately.

  • Could someone please recommend the best program to convert AVI and MPEG files for use (and exporting) into IMovie 11?

Hi - I understand I need to convert AVI and MPEG files for use within IMovie 11. I have one particular file that has a watermark stating "Created with Flip4Mac WMV Demo". Can someone please recommend the best program for a novice?  Thanks!

    Hi Susan,
It is no simpler converting vobs to mp4 than mpg (mpeg2).
There is *always* a loss of quality converting video from one lossy-compressed format to another, e.g. mpeg2 to mp4.
So, if you want to not lose any quality, then converting vobs to mpeg2 (mpg) is the thing to do (since there will be no video/audio re-compression), assuming Lr5 will accept them (sorry, but I do not know). example commands:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
If Lr5 won't accept them, then you can convert to mp4 with minimal quality loss using a command like:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
You may need variations of these commands depending on encoding of vob.
Note: -i means -input-file; -sameq means -same-quality, as much as possible.
ffm... is smart enough to avoid re-encoding, if possible, when -sameq is used, and makes reasonable choices for audio/video codecs based on extension of output file.
Of course, you'll need to download/install ffm... program if not already on your machine, and execute commands in a terminal or command window.
Do keep us posted please .
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • HD monitor suggestion for use with Mac Mini.

    Hello Group,
Can anyone suggest the best (or good, compatible) HD monitor to use with my new mac mini just purchased (late 2009 model). Can't afford the apple cinema's so I'm looking for a cheaper option to still have HD using HDMI inputs, looking to spend around $200-$300..also do I need to purchase an adapter of some kind?. Thanks so much for any suggestions!

Although I have no specifics, from various articles I have read
about the condition, a few things stand out.
What seems the most prevelant and makes a lot of sense is
to use a monitor that has a matte finish screen.  Glossy screens
regardless how you tweek lighting and viewing positions will always
have some amount background reflection.  It can be so low as to
not be conciously perceptible, but the eye is still detecting it and
is trying to correct for it and what is viewed on the screen.
On the subject of lighting, with the wider spread use of CFL
lights could be adding more people to the list with this problem.
The "cycle times" of these can conflict with display refresh times
causing the susceptable persons eyes to get confused.  The old
incandescent bulbs had much less of this effect.
Screen refresh rate can also be an issue.  With the iMacs and
the Thunderbolt displays as well, these are fixed and cannot be
tweeked, atleast not without third party intervention.  With a
Mini and some other third party monitor, adjusting refresh rates
    can help.
Environment in general is a major contributor as well.
So, resolving the issue may not be as simple as just getting
a different monitor, although matte screens seem to be a
    major help.

  • Suggestions for use of EQ Cymbols, hi-hats, shakers PLEASE

One consistent mistake I'm making in my my mixes is trying to achieve a balance between "bright enough" sound at the high end (pianos, Cymbols - hi-hats - shakers, etc). It seems if you don't add EQ and sometimes compression to these tracks at all you can barely hear them and I hate that muffled sound. Then, however, at the back end of my projects, I'm constantly faced with having to elliminate clipping or distortion with these instruments. Please share some techniques without getting to technical if possible. I know this is a subjective call.
But For Example, maybe someone migght suggest for EQ on hi-hats on Frequency Gain/Slope:
    99.0Hz, +8.0dB 1.10Q
    500Hz, +0.0dB 0.71Q
    1080Hz, +2.0dB, 0.71Q
    7000Hz, +12.0dB, 0.6Q
I also could use help knowing where to set the volume for individual tracks at the BEGINNING of the project. That's the other problem - setting my individual track volumes too high then having to "dig them out" of the mix at the back end and not having enough volume "head room" to do it. - TOTAL REWORK.
Lastly, is it generally NOT a good idea to have "yellow" notes (val:80)?

Due to lack of assistance, we were unable to pursue this requirement - the users were not happy, but what can you do, huh!

  • UI Defaults Import problems and best practice for using UI defaults

    Hi,
I'm hoping some of you experts can tell me how to Import the UI Defaults from Schema A and Workspace A to Schema B and Workspace B. My goal is to fluidly share the UI defaults with another developer as we march forward creating new versions of the application (inside new Workspaces with new schema names). My longer term goal was to create a "library" of UI defaults that other future developers could easily access as well.
The basic setup I have been using is that each developer gets their own schema and their own workspace. When a new version of the database design is made, I keep the older versions of the workspaces and schemas intact and then create a new workspace and new schema for each developer (just two of us right now). Then we Export apps, respectively, from our old workspaces and Import apps into our new workspaces. I also create a new db tablespace and new db user account and map to new workspace as well. This way I always know what db design version we are using against what Apex app version and can, conversely, delete tablespaces, user accounts, workspaces and Apex schemas in one swallow without worrying about getting the wrong version of something accidentally deleted. 9It may seem like I am doing a lot of extra work, but my sanity is still (relatively) intact.)
    I keep getting
"ORA-20001: GET_BLOCK Error. ORA-20001: Execution of the statement was unsuccessful. ORA-20001: You do not have access to the schema that you are importing. Import failed. <pre>begin wwv_flow_api.g_id_offset := 0; wwv_flow_hint.g_schema := 'MY_OTHER_SCHEMA'; wwv_flow_hint.check_schema_privs; end;</pre>"
    when I try importing it.
We want to share our UI defaults that we each set up in our respective workspaces and schemas. We do have some overlap of tables (which may be a no no I suppose). We also each have differently named (test) apps.
So, like app Import/Export, I thought I could just Export my app (along with UI) from Schema A and Workspace A and simply import it into Schema B and Workspace B and then in the new Workspace have access to the UI. I tried editing the UI *.SQL using the app ID and new schema name but it still balks. It seems like there is an internal table ID code specific to each table that is particular to the table and the workspace it was created in.
I can go to a specific workspace, create a sample UI, Export it's app, and Import the same app (new ID) into same workspace and the UI shows up fine.
So, what good is the UI defaults if you can't carry them forward to the next version of your app that is in a new workspace? It seems like we are forced into creating the equivalent of one workspace, say the "Library", and both of us with separate schemas sign into here. But then how do I get the UIs from the "Library" to our "Beta" workspace, and similarly from there to 'Production' without recreating UIs each time? And, if I prefer a sample set of records, say only 100 test recs, and the other developer prefers a full set, say 30,000 recs, and we have to use the same workspace, since the workspace can only be associated with one db tablespace, how can I load both 100 and 30,000 recs into same area? (and since we can't, that is another reason we wanted to use separate workspaces and pass our respective UIs back and forth and finally into the shared "Library" area.)
Well, thank for reading through this and hopefully it makes sense.

OK Scott, let me try to clarify here:
Regardless of what reasons I have, my immediate goal is to sucessfully Export the UI Defaults from Schema A and Workspace A and Import into Schema B and Workspace B.
So, logging in as Schema A into Workspace A, I go to my app, then Export/Import then "Export User Interface Defaults". There is only one schema available to choose from in the "Schema" dropdown select list. I export the UI and save it to a file.
Next I logout and then login as Schema B into Workspace B. I go to Shared Components UI Defaults and display my tables. Most of these tables (about 30 of them) have the same exact name as the tables used by the other schema. UI Defaults do not exist.
I choose "Import" in the Tasks list, File Type "User Interface Defaults" and pick file I just exported. File is successfully Imported. Now I'm on screen for installing the UI Defaults. When I try to Import the UI it brings me to "Confirm Replace UI Defaults" and lists the OLD workspace schema (not the new one I expected)as being removed and replaced. I push ahead, tell it to do the replace and get the "You do not have access to the schema that you are importing". So I guess I'm doing something wrong.
