Audible fan noise even when idle.
I have a 2.2Ghz Macbook 10.5.1 4GB Ram.
WHENEVER I use the laptop I can hear the fan. It is not loud just a constant low drone in the background. Enough to be distracting.
It is running at 1800rpm. CPU temp ~38oC, processor usage pretty much zero for ten minutes.
I only ever heard the fan on my old iBook when running intensive activities.
Is this normal?
1800 rpm is the lowest fan speed, it is normal, however, there shouldn't be much of a sound except for a lil' wind blowing sound in the exhaust.

X1 annoying fan noise even in standby.
Yesterday I switched out my Cisco RNG200 black HD DVR for the new X1 DVR. Receiver Native Ver 2.0.2
XRE Protocol Ver 2.8.0
Environment p6-k6 This X1 unit is the one with the blue LED power, which from my google searching tells me its the latest ? Unfortuntely, there's a very annoying fan noise that has no way of turning itself off, unless i pull the power from the unit. Even in standby mode... I only watch TV for a small percentage of my time spent in my living room, so to have to put up with a constant fan noise even when no TV is being watched is simply unacceptable. It's coming in at 50db using SPL Meter on my iPhone next to it. and about 45db from my seating position. Is this an inherrent design flaw of the unit, and will i be wasting my time and effort, switching the box out for something that will be equally as loud ? I understand that this has an atom cpu and some form of cooling is req'd, but even while on standby? At this point, i will have to go back to my local store and ask if i can either have my old RNG 200 back or move to a different provider, that has better designed hardware. Unless I am just unlucky and that yes the fans do normally only spin up when req'd, and that i have a faulty box. Please advise. Not as easy as just swapping unfortunately. I've now been to two stores... Spent Fri, and Sat morning on this now. Even though they even had an Arris XG1-A as their display model, they tried to deny Arris made X1 boxes. That was at least until i showed them the underside of their own box, with the Arris sticker, and used my SPL meter app on my phone at the difference of noise coming from this box and the other Pace they had on show.. Regardless of which, they said, they didn't have any. But the lady was pretty good, she said, they could request a shipment of an X1 box, and only put it in the notes to make it an Arris box... I guess i have a one in four chance... I also took an Xi3 box, and that's proven to be a pain also... not in noise, but in activation. After an exchange at one of the local stores and it doing the same thing, and a lenghty call to customer service, i'm having a tech come out to look into the issue. Kudos to Comcast for having escalated this to one of their X1 tier 3 support teams, who was savvy enough to realize that there's nothing wrong with my signal, and that i probably need a Point of Entry Filter installed at my box outside... Anyway, this whole X1 transition hasn't been much fun all in all. I still have a noisy box, that i'm not going to be able to put up with.. Came downstairs this morning, and it was the first thing i heard... Hopefully the one that's being shipped will resolve... I now know that the box can be hidden away somewhere completely different and have the remote control still work, but that isn't as simple as it may seem.. I'd still need to get an HDMI signal from the box to the TV, and it would involve cutting into my walls to run cat6 to accomplish that. I may just opt for the old 80's style clunky i-guide, instead of the x1... if my third attempt of getting an Arris box fails... That or go to Dish, as the XOD has so many drawbacks on the older iGuide system.

Mac Pro Power Supply making noise (even when turned off)
Hi everyone,
My Mac Pro Early 2008 (Dual quad core 2,8) began to make noise a while ago and it drives me mad.
The sound is (100% sure) coming from the Power Supply. The sound is not mechanical, but electrical, like an oscillator crackle sort of.
First I thought it was the PSU itself, so I had it replaced with a new one, but that did not change the situation.
The (new) PSU makes excactly the same noise, even when my computer is turned off (but still connected to the power socket in the wall).
I've eliminated all possible factors that could create an interference (other electrical devices). I even completely switched off the power of my office, except for one power socket; the one I used to test the Mac. As soon as I connected the Mac, as soon the noise came back. So, it's got to be inside the Mac.
So my question is: if it's not the PSU, nor the power of my office, what could it be?
PS: I've tried a UPS too... but that did not change a bit.
Thanks for your suggestions!Hey

Firefox uses up 10% of processor even when idle. Why?
Firefox 3.6 uses at 10% of processor power even when idle, parked on Google. I have McAfee, which uses 5% to 10% on top.
Firefox loses keystrokes. It gobbles up a lot of memory very fast (did not do this before). After about 2-3 hours of surfing, it uses up 6-% to 70% of processor power to the point I have to reboot.Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

[Solved] High load average even when idle after update
Hello arch fellows!
I have a Dell Inspiron N4110 intel i5 4gb ram. I think it is a decent laptop and should run Arch Linux pretty well, right? Well, it does until I run 'pacman -Syu'. After the update, the load average gets over 1.00 even when idle. It hardly gets under 0.40. Before updating, the average is under 0.10 most times. The command top doesn't show me anything. All the processes are practically 0%. It seems to me the problem would be the kernel, am I right? But I tried the fallback option when booting but it is the same.
Does anybody have an idea of what could be the problem? I appreciate any help.
Last edited by sollidsnake (2012-05-18 00:32:52)Thanks for the reply. It was really a kernel problem. I downgraded it to an older version and it looks normal now

Why is itunes using 94-97% of my cpu, even when idle?
i am running a 2.53ghz macbook pro with snow leopard, and whenever i have itunes running, it hovers around 94-97% cpu usage, even when idle. Whats wrong?
Try initially deleting the /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist file and the /Home/Library/Caches/Firefox/ folder. If you have installed any Firefox extensions/plug-ins be sure to upgrade them to the latest versions or uninstall them.

Qosmio F50-10Z - fan cycling on and off even when idle
My f50 is constantly turning the fan on and off every couple of minutes, even when the machine is idle and has not run any applications.
SpeedFan shows that the GPU is cycling constantly between 55 and 65 degrees C even when there are no apps running (e.g. just after booting) - the fan kicks in at 65, turns off at 55 and then slowly heats up again. The fan noise is noticeable (I don't think it is going full speed, though), and it is a bit abrupt and annoying to be happening constantly and doesn't seem like normal behavior. Core 1 and 2 on Speedfan are cycling between 40 and 45 C
Outside temperature is 20 degrees, so the environment is unlikely to be a factor. I've air blasted the fan for dust (as much as you can seeing as the f50 isn't built to be taken apart by a Home User), but even when the fan is running the output doesn't seem noticeably hot.
I'm am only running toshiba drivers from the website (currently 7.15.11.7590)
My main concern is that this will negatively impact the life of the fan. Am I being overly picky or is there something I could be doing?
Thanks for any adviceThanks for the reply Lars_3.
The notebook came with Windows Home Premium pre-installed - I haven't replaced the OS at all, though I have created a recovery disk at the urging of OS when I first booted it.
The BIOS is up-to-date as I use the Toshiba Tempro service (which again was pre-installed) and occasionally check with the website to make sure I haven't missed anything. I don't like the idea of installing drivers or anything else not released by Toshiba as I've seen people mentioning overheating shutdowns (at much higher temps) from using non-f50 drivers. I regularly keep the base elevated to enhance air circulation, and clean the intakes with compressed air, but it doesn't seem to make much difference.
Everything else works perfectly (and I'm a happy customer) except for the noise factor of the fan switching on every two minutes during even light use (not even 3d game use, which I assume would utilise the 3d card more and be expected to come with greater fan use). -
September 2011 MacBookAir4,2 1.7 GHz White noise even when sound turned off
Since new this MacAir has had a white noise like a tv not tuned in even when sound is off. Gets worse as it gets warmer. Seems to be getting worse then ever.(summer). Usually connected to a Thunderbolt Display and makes noise only when display is attached. Disconnect the display and the noise goes quite after a few minutes till display is again attached.
Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
I think it is the Cooling Fans making the noise and the Thunderbolt connector gets hot after a few minutes.

BarryHello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try checking the hard disk for errors just in case.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Verify. Of Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When it's finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. In the Startup Disk window select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
Also, while you have Disk Utility open, Repair Disk Permissions, reboot and see if the sound anomaly still exists.

Mini fan runs even when turned off
Yesterday the fan started running loudly (seemingly top speed) and it won't stop even when the computer is turned off (only way to kill it is to pull the power cord). The vents on the bottom have a bit of fuzz on them, but nothing outrageous. Other than working on the motherboard (which I'm not capable of doing), what can I try? I did reset PRAM...nothing changed.
Thanks! Is the power/sleep light on or off when the Mini is "off" but the fan is running?
If the light is "on" in some fashion, can you start the Mini by pressing the Menu button of your Apple Remote once?
If you can't do this, I fear you have a logic board problem similar to the one first diagnosed by brisbanebazza:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9524465#9524465
Unless you know someone who can do electronics soldering, generally the fix for this would be to replace the logic board, which is usually too expensive to be economical in my opinion.
BTW, no harm in gently vacuuming the fuzz out of the vents, with the Mini closed up, not open.
After you vacuum, you might also try something wacky: try running the mini upside down for a short period of time. -
Late 2013 15" rMBP fan noise even on 2D games
Hello,
I have the latest model Apple Macbook Pro 15" with retina display. I'm using the basic model with 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, Haswell i7 cpu with integraded Intel Iris Pro 1gb gpu.
The problem is about the fans. I have never played a game on my mac before two months ago. Since then, when I play the fans get noisy and in a few minutes they start to spin at max rpm about 6000.
I have talked to Apple Customer service and they made me do it sth. like SMC, PRAM etc. However, it didn't fix anything, then I handle my mac to the nearest Apple Store.
They cleaned it and checked the system, according to their said the system works fine. I got it back today and whenever I came, I tried and it happened again.
Just for an instance, I launched "Bridge Constructer Free" game and wait for about 3 minutes. After all, the fans were spinning at over 6000 rpm but meanwhile the system was not hot, it was a bit cool, just about 45 celcius degree.
On the other tasks, like web surfing, playing a full HD video or daily things, it works perfect. I've never heard the fan noise and feel the heat. Otherwise, on nearly every game I played, it happened. Although the system is under 50 celcius degree, the fans used to spin at max rpm.
Also we tried the same thing but it didn't happen on my friend's late 2013 13" rMBP.
This thing really irritates me because it leds to a such noise. Without taking earphones on, I am not able to use the mac comfortably.
Can you help me to solve this issue please?
I'm adding a screenshot below to see the values;I am not sure of the thermal limit for the haswell processors, but for Intel's previous generation processors installed in the rMBP lineup, the thermal limit was 100C (212F). Extended exposure to temperatures exceeding this could damage the CPU. What software are you using to manually control the fans? I wouldn't recommend manually controlling the fans. Let the internal heat sensors do their thing. Your rMBP will shutdown if the processor reaches dangerous temperatures for extended periods of time. I wouldn't say that this behavior is abnormal given the amount of heat your GPU generates when rendering graphics intensive games. Just make sure to keep the fan vent unobstructed at all times and a cooling pad never hurts.
Uninstall the software you are using to manually control the fans, reset the SMC, test and see if temperatures fall:

LR uses 10% cpu even when idle
I noticed that LR 3.3 consumes 10% cpu all the time even when it sits in the background (and I'm working within an other application and I have NOT started any batch)?!
After putting LR in the foreground (as active application) it consumes less then 5%?!
What is it doing??
Are there some settings to reduce/switch of background tasks?
(I already switched off memorycard detection for import, and XMP autosave)hherbos wrote:
Thank's - it was the RC_ChangeManager Plugin! - I removed it and there's now no notaceable CPU consumption of LR when sitting in the background.
It's really annoying that LR misses a lot of really tiny things that Adobe developers could implement them alltogether in only a some days. But no - you have to install lots of plugins, which lack of the poor LR api.
Well, the SDK is actually pretty complete, and quite powerful. Lr is a heavily threaded application, and this is exposed to some extent by the SDK. For plugin authors, this is really nice. It offers a way to make very powerful additions to Lr that don't belong in the core product, but behave as if they are.
But it means that a poorly written plugin can soak up a fair amount of resources. Note, however, that a plugin cannot totally steal all resources. There is a governor on that, so the worst you will see is this sort of problem -- annoying, maybe, but not disasterous.
And remember that the vast majority of plugins will use the tasks and threads handed to it from the application, and will never exhibit these symptoms. It is only some sorts of plugins written in a specific manner that would ever impact overall application execution profile. So, you could install many plugins and never see a change in behaviour whether 1 or 10 were enabled. But install and run one that cycles hard on blocking activity and you will see this problem.
There is always a trade-off. Plugins make the application very flexible, but with this flexibility comes some risk. There is no perfect solution and there never will be. (Adobe could never implement all plugin behaviour everyone would want as first-class features in the core product -- this is impossible.) -
Fans at high speed even when idle
The fans on my iMac have been running at high speed all the time for a few weeks. I don't know why: I've installed no new software except for system updates. The fans used to be almost silent.
XResourceGraph records the CPU temperature in the high 60s (Celsius) and CPU fan speeds of 5500-6000. The fan speed stays around here most of the time (regardless of how many applications are running - even if I'm running none at all!), and never drops below about 3500.
I've tried:
a) resetting SMU
b) resetting the PRAM
c) vacuuming the inside of the iMac
... all to no avail. Any further suggestions please?
Thanks in advance!
iMac G5 Rev B Mac OS X (10.4.9)System updates can cause problems like yours, since you have done the most obvious things, I would suggest reapplying the latest update as a 10.4.9 combo updater. Please let us know if that helped,

R7850 power edition 2gd5/0c - fan spin up when idle
Hi -
Apologies for crashing another thread.
Fan spins up every 10 secs or so when the card is idle, please help.
Card s/n is:
602-v273-030B1207076134
Card model is
R7850 Power Edition 2GD5/OC
(twin Frozr IV)
I stupidly flashed a vbios for a card that I believed was same model, and problem remains.
I do not have the original vbios - it is currently running 110MH.bin.
Thank you -Yes, that's it.
You have to power off your computer, then to turn it on again then the new vbios will take affect.
Try MSI VGA drivers for your card: http://www.msi.com/product/vga/R7850-Power-Edition-2GD5-OC.html#/?div=Driver&os=All
Remove current one with >>Driver Fusion<< in Safe Mode 1st,
before install the new one -
IPhoto uses 100% CPU and crashes after some time even when idle
Hi
I need some help with iPhoto. It consistently crashes after running for sometime even if left idle over night. Following advice from the community, I've done the following so far:
Repaired Permissions
Fix Library
Rebuild Library
Disable All email accounts
Disable Photostream
Disable iTune sharing for the Apple TV
Remove ~\Library\Preferences\com.apple.iPhoto* preferences
Remove \Library\Cache\com.apple.iPhoto
Restarted in Safe mode (to solve another issue)
I'm using Mac OS X 10.8.2 (12C60) and iPhoto v9.4.1 (701.67), and the crash report is below.

10.4.4 crashes regularly, even when idling
After installing the 10.4.4 update (from 10.4.3) OSX has become COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE. It crashes (shows the "reboot needed screen) on average about every 20 minutes. Each time this happens, I check my drives with Disk Utility after rebooting and it reports that the volume bitmap on the system drive needs "minor repair." (Permissions check does not report any problems however.) After repairing and rebooting, the Mac again crashes after a short period - even if it's just sitting there idling for 20 minutes! The crash appears to be independent of any user action - it will happen sooner or later, no matter what software I am running or what I am doing with it.
I'd like to know if there's any way to roll back to 10.4.3 -do I have to completely reinstall off my Tiger disk?
The hardware is: "Silver" G4 (876 Mhz I think) with 512 MB RAM. OS X is installed on an external Firewire drive *a La Cie d2 Extreme with about 215 GB free) and was running quite releiably prior to running the Apple Software Update.
G4 Mac OS X (10.0.x) 512 MB RAM "silver" 876 Mhz G4It crashes (shows the "reboot needed screen)
on average about every 20 minutes.
If this reboot prompt is in several languages, this is a kernel panic.
Check Resolving Kernel Panics for information on the causes and troubleshooting steps to take in order to resolve.
I'd like to know if there's any way to roll back
to 10.4.3 -do I have to completely reinstall off
my Tiger disk?
Without a bootable clone backup of your 10.4.3 system created before updating to 10.4.4, the only way to roll back to 10.4.3 is to re-install Tiger from the Tiger install disc via Archive & Install or Erase & Install. If your Tiger install disc includes 10.4.0, 10.4.1 or 10.4.2, after doing so download the 10.4.3 Combo Update to re-install 10.4.3.
