Audigy 2 equalizer and Megaworks 550

Im using the equalizer on the sb audigy 2 to boost my sound volume everything on the eq is on 2 except the bass which I put to 4 to avoid sound destoration.
So will anything happen to my speakers if I keep using them like this?
I atached some cooling ribs on the back of subwoofer to cool down the amp, i've also played for 20 mins on max volume and none of speaker blew and the sub was pumping out cool air but im no speaker expert so can anyone confirm that this is safe?

Ronnitude,
Unfortunately the Audigy 2 NX cannot decode AC3 Audio Streams input over the optical jack. This is due to limitations of the USB connection. It can playback stereo audio that is input over USB but I suspect what you are wanting is surround. Your best bet for this would be an external decoder designed for computer speakers. The DDTS-00 Decoder would be perfect for this.

  • Hiss, hissing sound in speaker sets like the MegaWorks 550

Over the years, I noticed that my MegaWorks 550 started hissing more and more. For anyone interested, i want to share my quest to find the cause.
First of all, i looked on this forums. There were several useful posts.
    http://forums.creative.com/t5/Speake...ion/m-p/169575
    http://forums.creative.com/t5/Speake...xed/m-p/184299
Based on these, I mailed customer service for some more information. Their mails were annoyingly useless. On top of that, they actually removed above mentioned posts from their forums! Here's a small summary of the mail conversation with customer support. It's so stupid, that it's actually fun to read:
    ME:
Dear Creative, [...] my MegaWorks 550 [...] has a clearly audible hiss. [...] This hiss is also present when no inputs are connected and independent of volume level. The level of hiss is equal on all five sattelite speaker connections, even when objectively measured with an oscilloscope. [...] I know the MegaWorks 550 is farbeyond the warranty, but i am a trained technician and capable of replacing any part. Could you please give a hint as to what causes this hiss? Kind regards [...]
    CREATIVE:
[...] To reduce static or buzzing noise from speakers, avoid placing speaker cables next to computer monitors, TV, an AC adapter, or any chargers for MP3 players or cell phones, etc. These devices have a strong field, which may interfere with speakers.
    Hissing Sound http://support.creative.com/kb/showa...aspx?sid=64810 [...]
(duh, i already mentioned that it is independent of any inputs and also present with nothing connected)
    ME:
[...]Dear Creative, Thank you for your answer. I read the support solution you pointed to, and i also read about eight different threads about this on your forum, suggesting several causes. I've tested the 550 in an electromagnetic Farady cage and with no inputs attached. The hiss remains constant on each of the five outputs and independent of the volume level.
It must be a problem in the electrical circuit. Since this is a very prevalent problem, I hope there's a technician at Creative who know the cause. It would be great if they could explain which capacitors or connections typically need to be replaced or resoldered to remove the hiss.
I'm, of course, very aware that the warranty of the 550 is expired, i would just really appreciate some hints on how to fix it myself. It would be friendly to the environment, to my wallet and to your reputation! [...]

    ME:
    Dear Creative,
I would expect a €450,- speaker set like the Megaworks 550 to last longer than the three years it did before it started hissing. However, it's beyond the warranty period, so i'm not asking for any official warranty. But surely the least Creative could do, is help me fix it myself.
I just need to know which capacitors to replace to fix it, probably somewhere in the power supply. I know that a lot of sets were sent back because of the issue, so surely there is a technician from Creative that can pinpoint the cause. PLEASE!

    ME:
    Dear Creative,
I'm not asking for a repair service. I want to fix it myself. I know that a lot of people sent their Megaworks 550 back because of this issue, so there are people within creative who know what causes it. Please, I just need to know which capacitor to replace. I wont contact you after that, even if the repair goes wrong or anything.

So... i opened the case and did some more experiments. I used a variable voltage. The hiss was indeed dependent on the voltage. Since it was not dependent on inputs or volume level and present on all five speaker outputs, i came to the following
    CONCLUSIONS:
    - the hiss is most likely caused by the final stage of the power supply unit
    - specifically: decay of one or more of the 10 capacitors in there
    - this is caused by creative using capacitors of a barely sufficient capacity (too cheap). Once they decay the become insufficient.
    - communicating with the customer service is a fun, but not very rational process
Perhaps i'll replace the capacitors. If i do, i might share pictures and keep you updated. Please respond if there's anyone out there who would appreciate that.

  • Megaworks 550 Question/Problem

    Hello.
I have recently purchased the Megaworks 550 5.1 system.
From the very beginning when I first turned on the speakers I noticed this abnormal ground noise. The noise persists even if the speakers are disconnected from the PC or the volume is 10. I also tried to change power connection to a different power source but the noise persists.
As this is my first 5.1 PC system, please let me know if it is normal to have this ground noise level in the speakers. It is particularly unpleasant when I listen to low volume music as the noise is only partially covered by the sound and I get a disturbing mix of ground noise and music.
What should I do to verify if this si normal ?
    Thanks in advance.

    So I looked.
So the only solution would be to change them.
    Great!
I should have got the Logitech system instead of waiting months to get a non-hissing system.
I have been a fan of creative for the past 6 years. I am very unhappy I don't trust them anymore now

  • Megaworks 550 power issue

I have a Megaworks 550 speaker system that i have owned and loved for a couple of years now. recently after a power outage it stopped working. i checked the fuse and it's fine. however the power light on the back of the subwoofer is blinking and i cannot seem to get the system to work.
    any ideas?

do you still have warranty on the system? if so, call tech support.
if not, I guess it might be a deffective power/standby switch on the controlbox (or a broken cable)
you can try shorting the powerswitch on the remotecontrol and see if you get it to work.
btw, is the power led "blinking"(on -off, on-off,...) or just "lit"(on.....)?

  • Question about megaworks 550

    Hello there!
My megaworks 550 are connected to the PC via Audigy 2.
When i'm playing music or watching 'stereo decoded' movies in 5.1 (which is of course "not real" 5.1..), the signal of the center is significantly weak compared to other speakers (including rear ones).
Is it normal ? How could i ensure it's not a technical problem?
    thank you very much

By the way, should there be any sound coming from center in a case like this ?
    (when stereo is duplicated )?

    Hi...
I have the Creatrive Soundworks Megaworks 550 5.1 THX Speaker System.
The pressure point of the volume control buttons of the soundcontroller are defect. When i pushed it, there is no *click* and it goes louder and louder and louder...
Both buttons (volume up and down9 are defect. What can i do, to have a normal Soundcontroller?
    Please help me!
    Thx a lot!
    Nice greetz

If you still have warranty, just call the tech support, if you don't, try opening the soundcontrol box, and lubricate the two microswitches with a little wd-40 or something like that. that might work.

  • MegaWorks 550, doesent work

    hello
my megawork 550 stopped to work
i've checked the fuse and its not blown.
i went to school for the day and when i came home it was dead....
    (it workt in the morning)
i cant get any power out of it.. the little power "lamp" on the backside of the sub doesent "shine". i've allso tryed to change the power cabel but it didnt help, nether to change power outlet.
    please HELP ME
(sry about the english im not so good at that )

I have the same thing and it did the exact same thing. The 550 is a faulty system that creative sells. I had blow on me in 3 months, got an RMA (which they completely messed up) and got a new system. few weeks later BAM blew again, half volume fuse is fine everything just no light on the power thing. Total BS. After getting through all the BS with creative about that they denied me a fix becusae the cage was dented in transit and hushed me saying that they would contact UPS about it and let me know. That was oh...9 months ago? Anyways if you find a shop manual for it email me becuase i want my speakers fixed and god knows creative isn't gonna do it.

  • Megaworks 550 messing up

hi my megaworks 550 is starting to messup it starts "mumbling and stops wolfing" if I bump the sub it starts to work for a bit longer then starts again. Its out of warnty. anyone have any sugestions on how to fix this. it seems to be related to the volume the louder i put it the sooner it starts.

I had this problem with my last set of megaworks 550.. In the beginning it didn't bother me that much. But after a while it became constant.. only "dropping" the subwoofer 5 cm banging it on the floor made it work for a second or two.. I still had warranty so creative sent me a new pair.. I later tried fixing the old ones, with no success, although i i found out something quite interesting..
I opened the sub and looked around all over. I couldn't see anything, but i'm no electrician either.. I gave up but tried again about a year later.. I opened it with the power on (i know you shouldn't but..) and started "pressing" different parts with a tennisball (what i had near me ) the sound became clear and perfect when i was pressing on one of the big black metal-parts... i also noticed a spark after a while when you pressed against the black thingy.. I tried soldering at that point, but couldn't really reach the point where the spark was, and after a few days thinking i would fix it, i managed to solder off a part of the actual card (the thin copper plate on the green card) and now it's completely dead. (no light, no sound.. nothing)
It seemed i was quite close to fixing it, and i'm sure i could get it fixed quite easily at someone who knows a bit more about it than me if i point out what i've learnt.. But right now i can't be bothered. And i already have a working pair so..
    Hope this helped..
    Oh, and by the way..
    http://peksa.tx-shells.net/fel.jpg
    http://peksa.tx-shells.net/fel2.jpg (bigger version)
If you look at the picture. the spark was between these two points.. I have no idea what that is or anything but i tried soldering there.. The black thing i was pressing was the thing you can see in the top left corner. If anyone knows what it is, how to fix it i'd be glad as well
    /Peksa

  • SB Audigy 2 ZS and Windows 7 - Full Package driver?

4SB Audigy 2 ZS and Windows 7 - Full Package driver? [color="#000000"]Ok. I read some topic's where is explanation and download driver for SB Audigy 2 from Daniel K.
My question is about applications. Why offical drivers don't have applications?
"Audio Effects are high quality music enhancement efects created by the powerful audio engine in your sound device."
I need Audio Effects! Especially Advanced EQ and Graphic Equalizer.
The Sound is much better with this effects.
Please, do something because I love this sound card!

Re: SB Audigy 2 ZS and Windows 7 - Full Package driver?T While Creative has written new drivers and some applications for Windows 7/Vista for the Audigy, they have not re-written or updated all of the original applications on the CD. This card is very old now. What Daniel K. did was take all of the applications or most of them, and tweaked them to properly install and include themselves in the registry on operating systems other than Windows XP. For the full and most recent package, check here:
    http://forums.creative.com/t5/Sound-...009/td-p/53838
If the application you want is not included in his package, then you can try downloading the official Creative version and install it on your system in "compatibility mode" by right clicking the file, and choosing properties, and then the compatibility tab and choosing "Windows XP service pack 2 or 3" and it may or may not function.

  • Equalization and Symbol Rate

Despite my number of posts on this board...I swear that I am happy with my NI devices....
I noticed a peculiar thing today.  I am using some of the example programs to do some channel characterization.  The investigation is meant to be relatively simple.  I am using no baseband filtering, and since my transmitter and receiver are static I desire no equalization (in fact, right now, the up and down converters are connected via a short SMA as I do some "sanity checks".)
I am interested in utilizing as much of the 20MHz real time bandwidth as possible...so I went into the transmitter code (for example, the PSK Generate.VI located in the Modulation Toolkit Example folder) and hardwired 20MHz in for the bandwidth.  With no baseband filtering, the original code determines BW by scaling the symbols/sec by some number (10 I think) which would limit the symbols/sec to 1MSym/sec.
Anyway...with my 20Mhz BW...I set the symbol rate at 100kHz.  Using the PSK Demod VI in the same example directory, I observe the constellation and other measurements.  No problems here.  1Mhz symbol rate....OK.   Increase to 5Mhz...a little noisier, but OK.  Higher than that (say 10MHz symbol rate) and the MER and EVM start going way up.  Note that this is independent of the scheme (BPSK, QPSK, 8-PSK...whatever).
I noticed that if I then turn on equalization (on both the Tx and Rx sides of course), that the MER and EVM goes way down....especially at the high symbol rates.
So my question....I thought equalization was only necessary if the channel response changes over time (multi-path,etc.).  Why then would equalization improve things when the symbol rate gets higher?  Is it possible I'm seeing the frequency/phase offset of the upconverter and downconverter LO's?   Or, maybe I'm just approaching the limit of the hardware and the equalization routines actually help clean up non-idealities of the hardware at those rates?  For the channel I'm characterizing, I am actually interested in seeing the effect of potential multipath, so I'd rather not use the equalization routines at this time.  Maybe I'm looking at having to make a tradeoff here?
    Brandon

    Hello Brandon,
The behavior you are seeing is expected.  The equalization filter is used to correct the amplitude and phase of the signal so that after it passes though the 5610 you have a flat passband.  There is a section of the RFSG help called IF Response and Software Equalization and it can be found under Devices >> NI 5671 Overview >> Advanced Topics >> IF Response and Software Equalization.
I copied the typical magnitude response of the 5610 upconverter with the equalization filter disabled (upper graph) and with it enabled (lower graph) from the manual.  You can see it below.  I hope this answers your question.

I have two Airport Expresses running at my house. Both are connected to different types of speakers. Neither speaker set has its own equalizer, and both require a different EQ setting to sound just right. Does anyone know of a way to have iTunes automatically change its EQ setting based on which Airport Express it is streaming to?

I'm in the same boat. I have a 6 zone amplifier running with 6 airport expresses to different rooms inside and outside the house. Each has it's own acoustic characteristics. I'd really love to be able to set each airport to equalize based on my SPL frequency sweep I did for each room.
Setting the eq in itunes won't do it as that is global plus I have many more sources for auiod other than itunes that use the AEs directly.

  • Audigy 5 Rx and windows 7 64

I have just purchased the Audigy 5 Rx and windows 7 64 will not install this sound card , I can find in the device manager the Multimedia Audio controller card but when I try to install the drivers windows returns an error in installing them is there a trick or something I am missing , I have tried since Dec 30 with no luck even took the card out and put it back in , I am using a PCIe slot

Look on your CD for a "drivers" folder and then the WDM. You can browse to this in device manager and manually install your drivers by finding your AUDIGY 5, double clicking, then choose update driver, and then browse my computer for driver software. After installing, reboot. Retest the card. I have done this several times over the years when "setup.exe" on the CD wont work.
