Audigy Line-in Stereo as Mono prob

I have an original Audigy which I am recording stereo through line-in but no matter what recording program or operating system (98SE & Win2000 dualboot) the left and right channels are mixed to mono. They both have the same signal on them. It plays games, music, etc. in stereo just fine. It was working a few days ago so I'm worried the sound card went bad.
I'm I missing something simple? Any thoughts?
-thanks

<SPAN>It's a little complicated but I'm using the line-in to record two separate phototransistor voltage changes on two channels but that really is independent of the problem because both the Sound Forge and Sony Audition software left and right channel monitor levels are indicating equal levels even though they are set for 48kHz stereo sampling.<SPAN> It has worked okay for quite awhile before and the input levels are very low so I don?t think it was zapped by high input levels.
<SPAN>I did get it to work momentarily after messing with Dxdiag sound tests and the Audigy control panel speaker tests but after rebooting the computer it was back to no good.
<SPAN>I will have to say that I did install a new motherboard but the drivers are all up to date.
<SPAN>Can this be related to hardware/driver issues? I just assumed that a stereo signal coming into the card and showing up as stereo on the software was a very basic function.

  • Is iMac line in, stereo or mono

I'm hooking up my microKORG keybard to my iMac via the line in. I'm curious as to if the line in is stereo or mono.
    TIA!

It is stereo with a separate left and right. So, if you want both channels, then use a stereo cable.
They do make Mini-Stereo cables that have both left and right channels, so make sure that you get one of those. And, make sure that the device you are recording from outputs both left and right.
If you use a mono cable, you'll only hear audio through 1 speaker / channel.
Unless you specifically use a mono cable that hits both the left and right connectors on the jack.

  • Does my laptop dv6t-2000 have a stereo or mono audio line in?cc=us

I'm buying a system to record lp's onto my computer. The store says my line in is probably mono and so is advising me to buy their rca (stereo) to USB adapter so that I can record in stereo. It's an xtra $40, so I want to make sure that I need it. Or is my line in already stereo?

    boxboro,
    YES, it is stereo.

  • Is audio line in stereo?

Okay, maybe that's a silly question, but I can't find anywhere in the specs whether or not my line in is stereo or mono. It would actually help me to know if it's a balanced input. (I won't go into details here as to why, but it just does.)

It is stereo but the inputs are not a balanced. They are line level, high impedance inputs suitable for the outputs of consumer audio gear, but not un-amplified microphones or pro gear with balanced outputs. For those sources you will need adaptors, preamps, or alternate input devices that connect via USB or Firewire.
Examples of the latter are M-Audio's MobilePreUSB or the multi-channel audio interfaces made by MOTU.
If you really want the full set of specs, take a look at Apple's Audio Developer Note.

  • How record line-level stereo input on GarageBand iOS?

I'd like to record line-level stereo input sent from my Mackie mixer to GarageBand on my iPhone 4S. I tried plugging a standard 1/8" stereo cable into the headphone jack, but no luck. The GarageBand manual suggests that this is possible, and there is one (pricey) cable I've found that seems to handle this, but it claims that the audio input is mono only, suggesting that I may need a cable connection to the dock (not the headphone jack) to handle stereo.  I can't find a cable to do this, however...ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Jim

Sonoma Wire Works' "GuitarJack Model 2" iOS peripheral can help you do that. It's expensive though.

  • Stereo vs mono in garage band?

This may sound like a dumb question, I thought I knew about stereo vs mono all my life, but I don't. Even though I have been a full time professional musician all my life.
I just conected my new firepod to garage band 3. It works great.
    1. But I am finding I can select channels 1&2 stereo, 3&4, 5&6, etc. However it won't let me activate the red record button on 2, 4, 6, etc since it tells me it's all ready chosen.
    2. I understand I can simultaneously record 4 stereo tracks or 8 mono tracks
(5 and 10 if you include the line in on the back)
My problem is that the mics are mono. ( I don't have sereo mics) So when I select stereo am I really getting stereo? If not, can I record in mono and select stereo afterwards? Or duplicate the mono track and pan one slightly left or right. I know that is not true stereo but I can't really say why.
example problem: Upright piano with two mics, one near the bass end one near the high to middle. Does this need to take up 4 of my firepon inputs to have them be stereo? Can 1 mic be channel 1 and the other be channel 2?
Currently It won't let me unless they are selected as mono tracks.
    Will someone please enlighten me?
    thanks

You only use the stereo settings for a stereo source. Your mics are not stereo, therefore you should select MONO. You will then get a track that you can pan anywhere in the stereo spectrum you like, which is what you really want. Once you are done recording several tracks, and mix them, panning them where you like them, the "mix" will be stereo. Your "tracks" should always be mono, unless you have something like a stereo keyboard.

In the Track Info window where you select your instrument or preset, you can also select the channel through which you record - either one channel (mono) or two (stereo). Set it to one channel.

it's possible, if for instance the track was set to channel 1 (mono) and you were sending a signal on channel 2 (or any other channel your interface might offer), but you may want to start a new thread with this issue providing all background info for it

  • Can Compressor downmix from stereo to mono?

Seemingly simple question - when compressing DV/AIFFs to web H.264/AACs, is there a way to downmix from stereo(dual mono) to mono without boosting the level?
I don't care if it just uses the left channel, the right channel, or mixes both together - I just want it not to clip 0dB when it comes out mono. Is there a way to do this in Compressor?
(NOTE: without using the Peak Limiter filter to lower the level, which always seems to cause the job to fail)

First you have to split up the interleaved stereo file->in the Audio bin select "copy/convert" (or hit control+c) in the menue select "Interleaved->split" and tick the box "add to Audio bin"
Now switch Audio track 1 to "Left" at the very bottom of the channel strip->long click into the stereo symbol->menue opens->select "left"
Do the same on Audio track 2 in this case choosing "right" at the bottom of the channelstrip
Now select the reimported split stereo file in the bin and split it up into two seperate files in the edit menue->"split selected Split-Stereo-file"
You now have created two independendent files for left and right and can drag those onto your Audio tracks 1/2 in the Arrange - of course you need to pan track 1 to the left and track 2 to the right to retrieve your original stereo image

I've been editing NLE for over 15 years and have never once used a "mono" track, never felt a need to, and Premiere tracks default to stereo normally, which matches my sources. All delivery is typically stereo anyway, so in the case you have with wanting to use just one mic, the Fill Left or Fill Right works perfectly to "Pan Center" so to speak. Hopefully this will suit your needs. Maybe I have tunnel vision and am not understanding how a mono track is uniquely useful, but always open to learning new things.
In the situation where I might need to switch mic sources from time to time within the same stereo clip, for instance a wedding with a shotgun and wireless lav, I just use the Razor to put cuts in the audio clip where I want to switch. I just alternate applying Fill Left or Fill Right to each cut segment as needed, and throw in an audio crossfade at the cut point for a smooth transition.
If I need to MIX the left and right channels in varying degrees of volume, I will duplicate the stereo track and apply Fill Left to one and Fill Right on the other and this has the same effect as two mono tracks, each centered. There's certainly many ways to accomplish the same thing with almost any aspect of editing and that's just how I do it, not wrong or right really.

  • Stereo-to-mono glitch when match-framing

While searching for an answer I found a posting from ChiaMac dated Nov. 15, 2005 which describes the same problem I am experiencing. I have pasted the post below. Does anyone have an answer ?
    Hi,
Three different editing systems, all running OS 10.3.9 and FCP 4.5 -- an iBook G4, PowerMac G5, and PowerMac G4.
Quite often, when match-framing in the timeline to bring up a clip in the viewer, the viewer will show dual mono audio, whereas the source clip has stereo audio. Then, when I try to cut that viewer clip into the timeline, in this sequence or another, it will be dual mono. Quite irritating.
It is quite replicable. Not all clips will produce the stereo-mono result, but it is replicable with the same clips over and over.
The "linked selection" has no effect on the process, no one has pressed command-L by mistake, and all audio settings on each of the systems are set to capture and output in stereo.
Is this a known FCP 4.5 HD glitch? I haven't seen it listed anywhere when I've searched for it. Any ideas, suggestions...?

    >When converting a file from stereo to mono, Audition severely suppresses the amplitude of the entire file. This happens when using both the Convert Sample Rate method, as well as exporting a file from multi-track.
    >It gets weirder: files that were recorded quite a while back will process this conversion just fine, but newer ones will not. All files are recorded in 16-bit 44100 stereo and saved as a Windows PCM wav file - so as far as I can tell there is no difference and I'm simply confounded.
Generally when this happens, it means that there isn't that much stereo (ie, difference between the two channels) in the file anyway, and one of these two channels is inverted - so that what happens when you combine them is that the 'mono' parts then cancel out, rather than add together, and all that's left is the difference - which looks pretty much like what you've got.
To test this, the thing to do is to select one channel only in EV, and invert its polarity (Effects>Invert). If you now get more like the waveform you were expecting when you convert to mono, then you've found the cause. But not necessarily the reason for it...
