Audigy2 NX USB on dual-core system - crackling + skipp

I have an Audigy 2 NX (USB) SoundBlaster which was working perfectly until I upgraded to a dual-core Athlon X2 4200+. Now I get not just crackling, but skipping - MP3s play at 2-3 times the normal speed, missing out big chunks. I'm using USB 2.0. It's definitely not a problem with the USB controller on the motherboard because I get the same if I plug it into an Adaptec PCI USB controller.
Some observations:
) Disabling USB 2.0 support in the BIOS (falling back to USB .) doesn't fix it.
2) The skipping only happens for applications using WinMM. DirectSound is fine. This suggests the USB is OK but the Audigy drivers are somehow confused by the multiprocessor setup. I tested this using WinAmp with waveOut / DirectSound output.
I'm guessing Creative needs to add multiprocessor support to their drivers.Message Edited by mjarga on -28-2005 08:46 AM

I did find a solution - but it sucks.
. Uninstall your Audigy NX drivers
2. Disable USB 2.0 support in your BIOS
3. Reinstall the drivers from the original CD (not the new ones from the website).
Creative tech support were not very helpful:
"What it sounds like is that you may be having a bus issue between
Windows and your Computer
What I suggest is trying the SID656 This should help with the issue."
Eventually found out that SID656 is a knowledge base article on tuning your PCI card's performance. Great.

  • Dual core

    hey guys,
    Is there a way to enable dual core processing within java? I have got my hands on a dual core system and find that cpu intensive tasks use a maximum of 50% (im assuming its only using 1 processor). Is there a way to enable it to use both at the same time?
    Thanks in advance

    public class Spin implements Runnable {
      public static void main(String[] args) {
        int threads = 2;
        if (args.length > 0) {
          threads = Integer.parseInt(args[0]);
        for (int i=0; i<threads; i++) {
          new Thread(new Spin(),"Spin " + i).start();
      public void run() {
        for(long i=0; i<10000000000L; i++) {
          if (i % 10000000 == 0) {
            System.out.println("Thread \"" + Thread.currentThread().getName() + "\" is on iteration " + i);
    }Test your system with the above Java. Compile the above class and run it. By default it will use 2 threads. If you want to try more threads, pass the number of threads as an argument.
    java -cp . Spin 4
    After running the above, does it use all your cores?

  • MSI NEO4 Platinum + DUAL CORE detection problem after soft reboot

    I just build a new AMD dual core system (4800+) and it consistently fails to detect the second core after a soft reboot from windows Xp.  The MSI NEO4 Platinum came pre-flashed with the latest bios version 1.B.  If power off or use the reset button I can consistently get it to detect both processors.  Anyone else having this problem? Or know of a solution?
    Thanks.

    Hi, I did a upgrade from a 3200 venice to a Opty 165.[This is a different situation than your new build] I deleted the uniprocessor ACPI from the device manager before I removed the old cpu. It was a bit weird for me in that at first the bios saw it as a 165 dual core then the next time it would come up as single core. It went back and forth a few times between single and dual core in bios. I tinkered with a few things in the bios but not really sure if it helped but it eventualy stayed as dual core in bios and showes as dual core in windows. I have my MPS table version set to 1.4 in bios [ but it was this before change in cpu] also my IOAPIC is now greyed out [unable to change it, but it wasn't before] - both these are in Advanced bios features. In power management I have the ACPI standby state set to auto. Hope some of this might help you.

  • Dual Core Center working in Vista but not XP on a dual boot system?

    Hi All.
    My system specs are:
    Dual Boot Windows XP Pro SP2 and Windows Vista Ultimate
    Temps for CPU in Vista averaging at 43 - 45 degrees in XP averaging at 38 to 42 degrees.  It never seems to go much higher than 53 on Load.
    Thermaltake Soprano tower
    MSI K9N Diamond Motherboard
    Hiper 580watt Modular PSU
    4GB OCZ Gold 6400
    AMD X2 6000+
    2 X 300gb diamond maxtor 10 HDD
    MSI Geforce 7800gt
    DVD Rom
    LG Dual Layer DVDRW+/-
    I am running a dual boot system with Windows XP Pro SP2 on one partition and Windows Vista Ultimate on the other.  Both operating systems seem to be operating properly except for an odd situation with Dual Core Center.  In Windows XP Dual Core Center only indicates the Mainboard properties - No VGA, whereas on Windows Vista Ultimate Dual Core Center indicates both VGA & Motherboard properties.  I have installed MSI Nvidia drivers for the Graphics card & also tried straight Nvidia drivers for the card but it has made no difference VGA will not show up in XP.  Yet on installing Dual Core Center on the Vista partition VGA showed up immediately.  Can anyone help.
    If anyone can come up with an answer to this it would be a real help.
    Many Thanks in advance.

    have you try to update/install the dual core driver from amd?

  • USB Memory Stick won't work on my Dual Core Intel Mac...

    Just bought a 4gb memory stick a few days ago - it doesn't seem to like my Dual Core Intel Tower at all. I am plugging it into the USB slot at the front and trying to copy a load of files onto it.
    It's got around 1gb on it now and I can't seem to copy another single file onto it. I was copying folders of files, but just trying to copy a single file the finder seems to hang and I can't cancel the copy process - I have to hold the power on button to regain control of my Mac - is this normal??
    The stick works perfectly on a PC...
    Disk Utility reports no problems, and reformats OK.

    Be sure that the memory device is not NTFS formatted. You need to use FAT32 else MacOS Extended for it to work.

  • System crashes when attempting to install 10.6.  Keeps asking to restart.  Computer is a Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor and 2 GB Memory.

    I have tried to install 10.6 and when install is complete it says restart.  The computer restarts but keeps coming to a gray screen with a small black box that says to restart.  The processor is 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 2 GB of memory.  This should be more than adequate.  Any ideas?  Has anyone encountered this before?  I had to restore 10.5 from Time Machine.

    Your sig line says iMac, but TMK no iMacs were ever made with 2x2.66 GHz processors. Is this a Mac Pro you are installing on? Are you using a retail Snow Leopaard DVD?

  • Dual Core, but just one recognized [SOLVED]

    In the last days I had problems with my computer just going off randomly after some time... As I found out the CPU fan was too loose... Now I somehow fastened it so it seems to work normally now.
    Today I noticed (I'm not sure whether it's now the first time or I just didn't see it) that on booting I see just one Arch logo, although I have a Dual Core processor and normally there are 2 logos... I checked whether GRUB has the option nosmp set which was not the case. cat /proc/cpuinfo gave me just one core.. Then I tried to boot the arch live cd (the 2008.06) and cpuinfo had both there!
    The BIOS says that there are still 2 as well... so my first idea, that one core is broken because of overheating seems to be wrong, it's impossible that just one core breaks, doesn't it?
    So my question is - how do I get my core to be recognized again? I have the new 2.6.29 kernel.. could this be the problem?
    My second question is - the information about launching daemons on booting appears AFTER showing the login prompt (I login via tty) [EDIT: This had to do with the OpenNTPD daemon...]

  • PCIe Slot Speeds - G5 Dual Core 2.0

    Hi Gang
    I've been in touch with FirmTek support about a possible conflict - irregularity with regard to a SeriTek/2ME4-E installed in slot number 3.
    They're claiming;
    "The PowerMac G5 Dual Core PCIe slots 2 and 3 share bandwidth. If you install a fast card in slot 3 and a slower FireWire/USB card in slot 2, the bandwidth of both slots is reduced to the speed of the slowest card. This improper configuration could easily cause the issues you are experiencing."
    Unless I'm missing something, according to this diagram, I believe slots 2 & 4 share the same bandwidth? Or it would appear that the MIDDLE PCIe slot is the faster of the two others - yes?
    http://www.locationstudio.net/PCIe%20Speeds%20G5%20Dual%20Core.jpg
    And here's what I have installed;
    http://www.locationstudio.net/Slot-3-PCLe.jpg
    I'm still leaning on replacing the SeriTek/2ME4-E with a Multi-Port FW800 card, since my other drives are all connected via FW800. Can't take the chance of having additional data corrupted or deleted.
    Thanx for your thoughts
    Mike

    Another consideration:
    The Firmtek controller can accommodate (max with no allowance for overhead) 384 MB/s bandwidth, but a FW800 controller can only accommodate max with no allowance for overhead) 98 MB/s.
    As well, with a bit of research on the HyperTransport link which connects the Mid Bridge to the North bridge, I found an interesting comment in a HyperTransport Technology Consortium document which suggests that I/O devices of high latencies (slow) can have a dramatically adverse effect on the overall performance of the bus
    A problem relative to...the presence in a system of a very slow I/O device that is the target of posted requests. This situation can cause other registers in the system to experience *large and unpredictable latencies*.
    This seems to support the, albeit poorly phrased, claim by Firmtek that the combination of the devices may be the source of the issue.
    This is interesting stuff (says the geek in me). More reading.......
    Further reading of this document continues to peak my interest and provide further support to the claim from the Firmtek rep:
    http://www.hypertransport.org/docs/twgdocs/HTC20031125-0035-0009.pdf
    A Ha! Firmtek specs stipulate that the card is PCIe 4x:
    http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-2me4-e/spec/
    If I suggested otherwise, my apologies!

  • K9NGM Dual Core Problem

    Hey guys.
    Seems I have the same problem as the OP. Everything on the system says that dual core should be working, ACPI multi installed etc but only 1 core in task manager. Im going to try roll back the bios because the dual core was working before I flashed it. Thing is I only have the MSI download version of 7252v31, which apparantly needs to be used from a dos enviroment, hence needing a boot floppy to construct a ramdrive etc..(I have no floppy drive).
    The 7252 v3.60 latest driver has a little MSI install program to let you install through windows (MSISetup.exe). Is there a way of installing 7252v31 through windows, or can i just use it through a dos window in XP.
    If anyone can maybe link me to a windows installable version of the last bios update before 3.60 (which is possibly the update that has caused this problem) I would be most grateful.
    Also, will I have to go in and reset the CMOS manually?, or should the update program clear it for me (as it appeared to do when I installed 3.60 with the MSI exe).
    Thanks very much for any help this is driving me nuts.
    PS: Yes I am a very bad person for flashing my BIOS when i didnt need to. Lesson learnt.

  • AMD dual core 64 X2 and Opteron 1**; what motherboard.

    Hi to everybody, my name is Mauro and I am Italian. I have had for many years a lot of mobos MSI that are shown always reliable and with really excellent utility. An example the LiveUpdate that unlike utility of other brand is very comfortable and reliable. Currently I have a system AMD 64 X2 3800+ stepE4 with Asus A8N SLI Premium and memory RAM G.Skill PC4000 (chip Samsung UCCC) F1-4000USU2-2GBHZ PC4000. I have many problems of stability and I would want to return to the brand MSI. I use the PC as Workstation I am not interested to the SLI and I would want soon to pass to the CPU Opteron 1 * * dual core. The customer care G.Skill has reported that the brands of reference for the development of the forms are the MSI and few others. You would know me to suggest a complete mainboard in the endowments, silent and compatible with the CPU from me you quote. How VGA I have both chip ATI X700 Silent Pipes 256Mb or NVIDIA 6600 always silent pipes 256Mb. I am not interested to overclock. I am observing with attention the RD480Neo2 and other mobo with chipset NForce Ultra K8N Neo4 Platinum. Thanks for your share and suggestions.

    Skippy, that's changing fast. Probably most major manufacturers are now explicitly supporting the Opteron.
    Even MSI is getting there: K8N Diamond Plus
    Hi,
    To a careful study I have discovered that perhaps my Asus A8NSLIPremium has a problem that Asus is resolving. However I have asked to one friend of mine to make a will the MSI K8N Diamond Plus; in Germany it is already available some exemplary. The fact that the development has been made really with the Ram DDR that I have purchased (the G.Skill PC4000) it is a very important factor for the stability of a system. You introduces then with a good section of feeding to 4 phases it is very important. Certainly I am not interested to the characteristics of overclock but a Ferrari is not purchased only for racing. I have not told you that in so many years I have almost always had 2 brands that have always guaranteed me reliability: Abit and MSI. Objectively now that have tried also a lot of Asuses (5) I are not fully satisfied. For instance the Utility: LiveUpdate2 gave me reliability in the update of the bios (operation that finishes in DOS); the utility AsusUpdate because of a bug in the summer '05 are cost me 3 MB (update that departs in auto and it finishes in Windows). Resulted not could remain without MB I have had to purchase other identical MB. And treating itself of corruption of bios no guarantee. I have also discarded Tyan because it accepts only certified RAM DDR and their support it doesn't guarantee the operation with my DDR G.SKILL. Now that are in game I don't sell certain the DDR!
