Audio adjustable only in sound system preference

On my 2 years old Macbook Pro 17" since last week my sound volume only is adjustable by adjusting them in Sound System preferences,
The slider in my menu bar still shows and my sound buttons on my keyboard still work with 'beeping' sounds, but has no effect to my actual sound volume.
in system preferences everything is still on 'internal speaker' and showing normal levels.
Does anyone know how to get my buttons and my menu bar slider work again on my actual sound volume?

Try a pram reset:
Power off, then power on andbefore the start up chime hold the keys option, command,P,R(no commas)continue to hold these keys till you hear the the chime 2 times, then release.
Reboot.

  • HT3625 I don't have a "Use audio for:" menu in my system preferences

When I go to system preferences and try to follow all of the directions in the article, there isn't any menu or anything that says "Use audio for:" when I'm on the input tab of the sound preferences.  How can I get my MBP use the audio input instead of detecting it as an audio output?

    malcolm007,
Here is a pin description of the 4 pin connector, there impedence and shunting that needs to be taken into consideration, not to mention the response curve that this is optomized for,ie:headset mic response. There could be potential damaged cause by incorrect matching and shunting (shorting certain pins to ground) you might consider calling Apple and see what their response is. You can even try experimenting at your own risk, I myself can make no recomendation and would advise against it as you could risk damaging your device. I found no data that would allow an informed decision on my part. The audio quality would most likely be sub par for a music type of application anyways, as it is most likey optomized for the headset mic as prviously mentioned.
USB interfaces are cheap and most sound good and will definatly provide a safe and flexible way to get in.
    IMHO

  • Sound-System Preference-removal and fresh install

I believe the Sound-System Pref has been "corrupted" by a Core Audio manager installed by Digidesign(Avid)'s Pro Tools HD. I'm running the latest version of Leopard.
Can someone tell me how I go about doing this in a step-by-step procedure? Thanks in advance!

morning people, (if your up yet, its 8am)
bought a new psu from pcworld last night. they only had one brand, jeantech, i hope this is ok, i think so, i know someone running this psu with a p4 2.8/ msi system with no probs
    anyway its spec is as follows;
                        +5v   +3.3v     +12v     -5v    -12v   +5vsb
                        35a      28a       17a      0.3a   0.8a      2a
                            200w           204w    1.5w   9.6w    10w
it also has extra 4 pin cpu supply, do i connect this as well as an alternative or do i plug in to boost supply to +12v @ 17a x2 = 34a, or does it not work like that?!
right then, i'm gonna set this all up again in a little while, so is there anything else i need to do or check.
i do have one more question though, i have win2k on a h/drive now so can i just unplug old m/board and put in new one, or do i have to do a fresh install and format the drive first  and start from the begining
anyway must dash and thanks for your time and help, .....srios

  • Audio has ecko from sound system how do I lesson to make sound more clear

    Hi,
Video at an event where person was using a sound system.  The venue was an indoor riding ring.  There is ecko from the sound system.  How do I lessen this using the audio effects?  tks  sarah

Unfortunately, even with a program like Adobe Audition, there is not much that you can do about this. It is the ambience from the arena.
Now, you might look into using a Compression VST and some EQ, to minimize it. I do not believe that PE has either of these by default, but it can use many VST plug-ins. I'd look here and see what they have. You will have to experiment to see which ones work with PE. If they do not, I *think* that Audacity will accept VST plug-ins. I know that PrPro and Audition both do.
Good luck, and plan on listening closely,

  • Keyboard Shortcut for Sound System Preferences

    Hi everyone -
One of my favorite keyboard shortcuts on the Mac is "option + volume up" (or volume down) keys. This automatically opens system preferences and takes you to the sound preferences. I must use this at least a dozen times a day.
I recently got a new (non Apple) keyboard, and while it does have option and volume keys, the above shortcut does not work. Does anyone know what key commands the computer receives to cause the sound preferences to open?
I like to maybe use one of the softkeys on the keyboard to recreate this shortcut. Thanks! I've called Logitech and opened a case with a product specialist at Apple, but I figured I'd try here too.
    Thanks!

never knew about this shortcut. pretty useful. I also have to access this pane very often to switch between sound output devices. this got very annoying and I found this freeware
    [Sound Source|http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies>
try it out. it's even quicker than using your shortcut.

  • Clip inspector in imovie not working properly - when I select a picture - and select clip adjustment it tells me that I need to select one or more clips to view Inspector tools and in a clip the audio adjustment only shows a speaker? help

Clip inspector in imovie not working properly - when I select a picture (in project library) - and select clip adjustment it tells me that I need to select one or more clips to view Inspector tools and when I select a movie clip and then click on audio adjustments the audio adjustment appears as a speaker icon and I don't know how to get to the various audio options? It was working fine one minute and then I seemed to lose the functionality. Also editing a photo in a photo or getting rid of ken burns effect etc does not seem to work. help

Can anyone shed any light on this as I am having the same problem? One minute it works fine, the next you get the error message above.
    Many thanks.

  • Sound - My built speakers do not show in the output section in sound system preferences area only digital out hence unless I connect external speakers I have no sound - can anyone assist?

on my IMac the internal speakers have ceased working - in the sound preferences area only digital out sound is there no internal speakers to choose so unless I connect external speakers I have no sound

    Hey Jack (woofman jack)
Sounds like the micro switch inside the output jack that switches the audio from internal to external is stuck on external. Try plugging a set of buds, headphones or digital Toslink adapter in and out a few times to see if it will unstick the micro switch. You also might try jiggling a tooth pick around inside the audio output jack to see if that unsticks it? If not then you'll need to make an appointment at your Local Apple Store or Apple Service Provider and have the jack serviced.

  • Audio adjustment only works sometimes

I've been trying to mute the volume on my audio clips with variable results. Basically if I make adjustments to the volume it generally doesn't work but occasionally, and intermittently, it will work. The audio graphs below the clips always change but the actual sound doesn't. I notice from a couple of other posts that the latest update 9.0.4 solves some of these problems but I have this version. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this behaviour?
BTW I am using a MacBook Air with latest Lion installed.

Having the same issue with 9.0.4 installed and .  Audio adjustments to mute audio simply stopped working.

  • "Incoming audio prompt" always showing+ignoring system preferences

So i have a motorola H390 paired to my computer, but every time I connect it brings up a prompt asking if I want to use the device. The subtext says "You can disable this dialog in the Bluetooth Preference Pane by clicking on the advanced options and unchecking “Prompt for all incoming audio requests.” I've tried unchecking the box, rechecking the box, rebooting bluetooth with box in both positions, re-pairing the earpiece, wiping the bluetooth preferences. Nothing works. Has this happened to anybody else and does anybody know of a fix?

    HI,
    Locate these files.
    com.apple.SoftwareUpdates.plist
    com.apple.loginitems.plist
    com.apple.keychainaccess.plist
~/Library/Preferences. Drag those files to the Desktop.
Restart your Mac and see if that makes a difference.

  • System preferences in iMac for sound output shows only headphones. How do I change this to get sound through computer? Thanks.

In sound System preferences on iMac  headphones is only option for sound output. How do I change this to get sound output through computer, as in a video etc. Thanks.

There is a switch in the jack that may be stuck. Try plugging and unplugging a headset plug into the socket a few times.
You might try dipping the headset plug into some pure alcohol, wiping it nearly dry, and repeating the process to clean/clear the socket.

  • Any Headphones I plug into my Macbook it only Plays sound out of the Left Earphone??

I got New headphones and after about a week i noticed when I plugged it in it only played sound out of the left headphone, i plugged it into my phone and I pod and it Played out of both, then I plugged in different headphones into my Macbook and had the same problmem. I took a thin cotton swab and a TINY bit of rubbing alcohal and cleaned it out, still didnt work. Any ideas would help thanks! Im in panic mode!!

First check the balance in the Sound System Preferences.
If that is set correct I would bring it in to an Apple store and have them take a look at it.

  • Strange item in 'system preferences'

I'm running Tiger 10.4.5, and when I first started my Mac, it was on 10.4.2.
I have recently noticed an item called 'classic' in 'System Preferences'. I looked around on the forum and it sounded like that would only be there is I had run Mac 0S 9 on the iMac, which I never have. It isn't causing any harm, but I have no idea why it is there all of a sudden, and whether it is easy to remove.

    Hi, Daniel.
If your Mac shipped with Tiger installed, then Classic (actually, Mac OS 9 which is required for Classic) is not installed by default from the factory.
If you installed Mac OS 9, or if a Mac OS 9 "System Folder" was available on any mounted volume, the Classic preference pane would appear in System Preferences. It is used to configure preferences for Classic mode, which enables one to run certain Mac OS 9 applications simultaneously with Mac OS X.
The appearance of the Classic preference pane may also be triggered by the presence of the following file in your Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder:
    com.apple.Classic.xxx.plist
where xxx is an alphanumeric string.
The Classic preference pane is one of the System-level preference panes installed with Mac OS X. It only appears in System Preferences if it "thinks" Classic is available.
My advice would be to ignore it vs. removing the preference pane from the Macintosh HD > System > Library > PreferencePanes folder as this may cause issues with later Mac OS X Updates: one should never modify System-related files or folders unless one is a guru.
Unfortunately, since the Classic preference pane is bundled with Tiger, it cannot be removed using the instructions in "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Adding or removing third-party System Preferences." Those instructions, as their title implies, only works with third-party preference panes.
    Good luck!

  • Apogee Duet Not Showing up in System Preferences, device is getting power.

I've got a newer Mac Book Pro with only the Firewire 800 port. I've hooked up my Apogee duet through an 800/400 Firewire cable. The Duet has power but is not showing up as an audio interface option in my system preferences. I've downloaded the latest software from Apogee and installed it, then restarted but nothing's working right now. I'd greatly appreciate and help or suggestions.
    Thanks

I have the same MBP. All new. Have just received notice rom Apogee that my machine lacked an audio driver.
On their recommendation I updated the OS to 10.6.2. and vioila!

  • System preferences works differently after 10.5.8 upgrade

After upgrading to 10.5.8 I cannot select "Display Audio" in either the "Input" or "Output" sections of the "Sound" System Preferences when an external Apple headset is plugged into the headphone jack of the MacBook.
If the Headset is not plugged in all audio devices are available to be selected in the system preferences panel but when the headset is plugged in all audio devices (I have three) except "Display Audio" are available for selection. when I select "Display Audio" it immediately hops back to the headset.

I have the same with my NAS. In the beginning of Leopard the same thing happened, with the connect to the server a Finder window of the disk would open. But in the last 4-5 version everything went as it was supposed to. And now I end up with all these open windows ;-(. Annoying.
Detail, I connect using a SMB server.
Would appreciate it very much if this is solved in the near future.

  • System Preferences menu broken - can't swap wallpaper!  - Help!!

So my friend and I played a trick on an intern here at work who just got a new MBP. We swapped his background out for a vista one - real simple, right.
Well, he got back and had a good chuckle about it UNTIL - the system preferences panel crashed after he tried to switch it back!
So here is the only symptom:
    Open system preferences
    Click "backgrounds and screensaver"
    window opens, looks ok
window closes and error screen pops up saying "system prefrences unexpectedly closed"
HELP! he is NOT HAPPY now!

Sounds like you'll have to hunt around to fix the problem you caused. The easiest is to download and install the 10.5.4 COMBO update. If that doesn't work, create another admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem's gone. Report back.
