Audio adjustment for Loop in FCE

Hi - I'm trying to loop a section of live music of about 30 seconds continuously for an extended intro to a personal FCE project. The section starts and ends on the same sustained note, but the start of the section has a bit of louder applause. If I cut the louder applause out, I lose the beginning of the note, but with it in, the transition is jarring. I've attached an example of the clip at http://idisk.mac.com/workman_family//Public/
I've tried decreasing the volume at the beginning of the sequences after the first one to reduce the transition jar, but the results haven't been good. Is there a way to reduce the applause only or disproportionately so that the transition is smooth?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi, Tom - the problem arises when I copy and past that clip 4 times to make a 2 minute loop - the sudden increase in volume of the applause is very noticeable. I'm very new at FCE (like you can't tell) and I don't know how to do a cross fade, but that sounds like it would work in that the increase in applause volume would be gradual instead of sudden.

    If QuickTime Player 7 isn't in the Utilities folder automatically, you can install it separately. See:

  • Audio Level Adjustment for Multicam Clip

    Greetings,
    I have 2 issues while some audio tweaking for a Multicam edit.  I have assigned the audio for a single angle to apply to the entire sequence.   There are some clips in the sequence where, at times, I cannot adjust the level of the audio.  It will show the level when clicking with the selector, but it cannot be dragged up or down.   Stranger still, if I select it within a series of clips and use CTRL -/+ to change levels, it is unchanged even though all the others changed.  There is nothing differnent about the clips in question (they are not Compound Clips or anything.)
    Restarting seems to often fix the above problem.  But it seems to be happening enough that it's a real inconvenience.  Also I am having similar issues with the audio level meter freezing up intermittently.  Sometimes when I toggle audio skimmer it can correct it for a while, but once it starts, a restart is inevitable.   Does anyone have any workarounds for making this work properly?
    One last question that is not a glitch but a functionality I hope exists but cannot find.  Given that I have one angle of audio for the entire clip, I want very badly - and feel like it should be possible - to make adjustments to the audio as I would if it were one continuous clip; for instance, to be able to select a range across the clip transitions and adjust levels accordingly.  So far the best workaround is to select all the clips and use CTRL -/+ to adjust.  But this allows less control, because I must then go in and adjust sections of clips on the ends that I did not want changed.   Would love to  know if anyone knows a way!
    Thanks for your time and assistance!
    Brian

    I would think it would be easiest to open the muticlip in the Angle Editor where you would have a clear view of each individual angle and its audio.

  • Adjusting audio volume for all slides?

    I can easily do this for one slide, but when I Shift-click to
    select all slides, then apply Captivate's Audio / Edit Timing menu
    option, the dialog shows me an Adjust Volume option that adjusts
    the volume for all slides in the movie. But, when I adjust the
    volume and press OK to exit the dialog, the new volume setting is
    not saved with my movie. Is this a bug? Anyone?

    Hi boonedogr and welcome to our community
    In the words of Yoda: Hmmm, seems a bug we have found!
    So here is how to make it stick.
    1. Click Audio > Edit timing... and you should see the
    "Edit Audio Timing" dialog.
    2. Click the Insert Silence toolbar button. This should
    produce the "Insert Silence" dialog.
    3. Change the "Insert" field so it reflects 0.001seconds of
    silence.
    This step is necessary to trick Captivate into accepting the
    audio has indeed changed. I use 0.001 seconds as it is the minimum
    you can insert and it should have absolutely no discernable effect
    on your movie.
    4. Now click the Adjust Volume button to see the "Adjust
    Volume" dialog where you can alter the volume level as well as
    boost dynamics and whatnot.
    5. Make adjustments as desired.
    6. Click OK to dismiss the Adjust Volume dialog.
    7. Click OK to dismiss the Edit Audio Timing dialog
    At this point, you should notice several progress indicators
    as the audio clips for all slides with audio are adjusted to
    reflect your new settings.
    *NOTE: This will have no effect on Background Audio or Object
    Level Audio. Those clips will need to be adjusted manually as a
    separate process.
    Hope this helps a bit... Rick

  • Rules/Advice for use of FCE/iMovie

    Reading through many posts seems I find some general rules of thumb not found elsewhere. Thanks in advance for all comments.
    For serious video editing work and creation an external firewire HDD is needed, mainly to avoid dropped frames in either FCE or iMovie (iM). The new 20" iMac and external HDD (with 2 firewire connections, for the input device (DV camcorder or DV/SVHS deck) and to the iMac) should be able to run either FCE/iM.
    I just did a 45 min project in iM with no noted dropped frames but likely would in much longer projects if I don't get the external drive?
    Audio bit rate. Advice I read for iM is that without 16 bit audio the audio gets out of sync in long projects--does FCE also need 16 instead of 12? Not knowing this need, I've recorded a number of projects (with a DV deck and a DV camcorder) in 12--can I capture to the iMac/external HDD in 16 if I'm playing from a source tape that's 12?
    Chapter Markers. Seems there are "Rules for Chapter Markers" that I won't repeat here but suspect they apply to both FCE/iM when used with iDVD. Do those rules apply when you use DVDStudio instead of iDVD? One rule I haven't seen yet is that one should likely not use the apply chapter markers option in iDVD as it could apply a marker that violates the "rules" and cause strange results in the DVD when played, right?
    Any other rules or concerns I've missed--perhaps always max out on RAM even if its rather costly? What other basic tips or secrets should I know for editing with these products?
    Dale

    I'll just cover a couple of your points:
    Hard drvies: Internal HDs are actually a better choice, overall, than external ones .... if you have the option to have a separate HD for your Scratch Disc. You should not be storing your meids (your video) on the same disc where FCE lives, in other words, your system disc. Also, space is important; you should never let your scratch disc (your media disc) get too full. I think the reccomendation is something like you should always have 25% of that disc free. So, if you can do that with an internal, go ahead; if not, an external is your only option
    RAM: More RAM is good; if you can, I would go up to at least a Gig but this would be more for other apps or running multiple apps at the same time. I ran my G5 on 512mb RAM for a year with few probs (BTW, I'm a pro wedding editor) FCE performance is more determined by Processor speed than RAM anyway
    Dropped frames: Lotsa reasons for this but some ways to avoid it is to not have a lot of sequences open at once, lowering your RT settings, not running programs in the background, etc
    Audio: As Ian already suggested, the rule for bit rates in FCE is to keep it all the same, so even any music you import should be resampled as a AIFF that matches your sequence ie all 12 bit or all 16 bit. Frankly, I don't know why someone would shoot in 12 bit; it is a lower quality sample rate. Some peeps do it cuz their particular cam allows them to acces other audio tracks in 12 bit; audio tracks you probably wont be able to capture in FCE anyway. At any rate, just keep that sampling rate all the same and you should not have any probs with sync.
    Another key point in FCE that when you do your final export, you have to mixdown your audio. From Edit, Select All then go Sequence>Render Only>Mixdown
    Chapters: Basic rules for this in FCE is you can't have a chapter marker less than one second away from the beginning or end of your program. I think iMovie has probs if you place a chapter marker right on a transition; FCE is more forgiving but I tend not to do this too much, it doesn't look very neat in playback. When you set your chapter markers, don't forget to select the Chapter Marker option in the submenu and don't erase the <Chapter> heading: that does not show up in your export. When exporting, make sure nothing is selected in your timeline and use Export as Quicktime Movie and select Chapters from the pulldown

  • I've been giving HD videos in MTS format and convert the for editing in FCE.  Looks good in the program, but when I export the finished film, quality had been noticeable diminished.  Is there any way to prevent FCE from lowering the output quality?

    Hello -
    I've been sent HD footage in MTS format and converted it to Mp4 for editing in FCE.  It looks good in FCE but when I export the movie, the quality is noticably diminished.   Is there any way I can prevent FCE from lowering the quality on export?
    Thanks.

    >I use Foxreal video converter for Mac to convert the MTS using the Apple intermediate codec setting and the problem is that I don't get image, just audio
    My thought would be to NOT use Foxreal video converter.
    Use MPEG Streamclip or Clipwrap.

  • For loop vs Iterator

    I'm writing an application in which performance will be quite important and was looking into my collection classes. I recently saw the move towards using Iterator instead of for loops, while loops to retrieve objects from a List. I wanted to test to see which performed better and I saw that for about 1,000,000 Integer objects, an Iterator was 100ms slower in time in both Vector and ArrayList than a for loop using gets.
    1) Is the main cost the creation of the Iterator object?
    2) If I'm not worried about manipulation of my List while I'm retrieving objects and I will always be using a List in which I can always pull indexes (instead of say using HashSet)... is there any reason to use Iterator instead of a for loop?
    -- I read the recent tech tip on this and was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas of why to choose Iterator over for/while loops.
    Thanks.

    The purpose of Iterator
    The purpose of the Iterator pattern is to handle the traversal of a collection of objects.
    The advantages of Iterator has over other straightforward ways
    The direct access methods provided by some collection classes may not be as efficient or simple as using iterator pattern. And because the iterator keeps its own state, multiple traversals can be performed on a single collection simultaneously.
    An iterator hides the internal representation of the collection from the classes that need to access the contents of these collections.
    An Iterator pattern provides a consistent and sometimes efficient way to access the objects or values in some collections.
    What problems can arise if collection is changing?
    While using iterator, the changes of a collection such as that adding new elements or deleting old elements can result in inconsistency of the data, for example some objects may be missed or accessed more than once.
    How can they be avoided?
    A simple way is to make a copy of the collection and work on this copy but this can be very costly in terms of memory and time.
    Design a method that notifies the iterator whenever the collection is changed, and as soon as the change happens the iterator class throws an exception or restart whichever appropriate.
    A better way would be implements methods that monitor the changes and adjust the iterator and the results so they are consistent to the contents of the collection at any time.
    There are no general solutions to this problem and under different circumstance the proper solutions vary, however it is a good practice to taking possible changes of the source collections into account while designing the iterator, and it may be worth to let the user aware of the occurrence of any changes.

  • Audio of clips looping randomly in Premeire project

    Hey Guys,
    Was working on a project today and came across an incredibly frustrating error with little to know forseeable fix, at least from my view. It seems that randomly (and I really can't give a better description of when this happens as it really appears to happen at 'random') the audio from individual clips gets corrupted and plays on loop. For example, I have an interview clip that is cut at various parts but each have the same source file. Now, in the sequence pictured the other two '00046.MTS' clips play their audio fine, but when it gets to the highlghted clip the audio loops a short half-second soundbite. I have tried playing the original source file in VLC and it plays fine (i.e. audio does not loop) so this is clearly an error Premeire is making.
    Is there a way to fix this without re-importing the clip? I will do that if necessary but it is obviously not ideal. What's particularly frustrating is I don't know what is causing this to happen, so I feel as if I am doing things inadverntently to cause this. Plus, the fact it seemingly happens at random makes me nervous this will happen again with another clip and i'll have to re-import it again etc. etc.
    Anyways, thanks for the help in advance.

    Try deleting the Media Cache files with PP closed.  That way it will rebuild them when you reopen the project.
    You can find where they're stored on your hard drive under Edit>Preferences>Media...

  • WRP400: audio drops for 5..15 seconds on each packet error.

    Hi,
    On several calls i noticed that the outgoing audio stops for 5..15 seconds randomly.
    I'd say it happens on an average of every 5 minutes.
    When this happens, i can see that the value after "Call1 Packet error:" increases by one.
    Why just a wrong packet may stop the outgoing audio for so long?
    ...i've much more packet losts (about 3%) but they give me no problem at all.
    Since a little and cheaper Handytone HT502 gave me intermittent audio too, but the effect was much better (audio still stops, but in a second it comes back), i wonder if is there something i can do by tweaking the WRP400 settings, I'm still using firmware 1.01.00.
    Thanks.

    Additional Provisioning Parameters
    Additional provisioning parameters were added for configuring router/data parameters via open (XML-style) format.
    NOTE
    A sample XML profile can be generated by using the profile compiler tool (SPC). For instructions about provisioning, see the WRP400 Administration Guide at the following URL: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/csbpvga/wrp400/administration/guide/WRP400_AG_OL-19688.pdf
    Two configurable and provisionable parameters are available to address an issue with voice cutoff. You can adjust the Soft IRQ for Voice settings to suit the deployment scenario.
    To configure these parameters, connect to the following URL: http://192.168.15.1/VoiceDebug.asp
    Use the syntax shown in the following example, and described below.
    Example:
    softirq_active_voice=0,softirq_polling_cnt=1
    Parameters:
    •softirq_active_voice: Enable or disable Soft IRQ for Voice. Valid values are 0 (disabled) and 1 (enabled)
    •softirq_polling_cnt: Specify the polling count. Valid values are integers from 0 to 10.
    After upgrade, default parameters fixed my cutoff issue.

  • Which Audio formats are compatible with FCE?

    I just bought the cutest recorder, the Zoom H1 arrived today and it's going to be so handy for capturing audio files. As I'm playing with it, the WAV format it records imports and places just fine in FCE. But for some things I want a lower quality sample which will yield a longer recording time (like leaving it on for hour or more for lecture) and tried mp3 sample rate but the mp3 sample recording does not produce sound in FCE, but just a silence with blip, blip, blip...
    Shouldn't mp3 work in FCE?
    Also, I use Audacity and it opens none of the WAV or the MP3 and gives an error. I will be in audio 'he-double toothpicks' for a while until I learn how to capture, regulate, handle recorded files. Isn't there something like StreamClip for audio that will make your audio files compatible?
    I don't know what I am doing here folks and need some advice please.
    TIA,
    Ken

    Okay, I read that link and ordered Quicktime 7 Pro which charged me $29.99 and there is nothing to download. It turns out that it is just the key to unlock Quicktime pro from Quicktime 7. The problem is, I have Snow Leopard and am using Quicktime 10 so version 7 is an old version. I think I paid money for something I cannot use. Quicktime would have been the way to convert my files to AIFF. This is frustrating. Now I need to go find a way to get a refund from Apple.

  • Audio Commentary  aka  alternate audio file for movie.. How?

    Hi folks,
    I love this discussion group btw... awesome...
    So, I've got my feature film done, we did a 1 week run at the theatre now, we are almost ready for our DVD release but want to do one of those really cool Director Actor commentary / alternate audio files for the movie. Is this done in FCE or iDVD? and any tips?
    Best Regards,
    Mark

    ... I think there is a workaround with FCE + iDVD.
    You could duplicate the original sequence in FCE, then add your alternate audio to the timeline of the new sequence. (Record your commentary and add as a 2d audio track (say, a3/a4)). Raise & drop the audio levels appropriately across the length of your regular and alternate audio tracks. Export the resulting video to QT Movie and import it into iDVD along with your original Movie.
    You will now have 2 versions of your Movie & can put them both in a single iDVD project (of course, subject to the limitations of the total length you can put on a DVD (~2 hours for a single layer DVD, ~4 hours on a dual-layer DVD.) Or just put them on separate DVDs if your Movie is too long to fit both on a single disc.

  • Java - sleep in a for loop doesn't work (as desired)

    Hey all,
    I'm trying to get a draw animation when the mouse is released (after dragging an object to a set area on the screen) - hence I'm trying to do this via a for loop with a small sleep() delay. However it isn't working. The delay is there, but nothing changes until the end of the for loop and then you only see the final repaint() [i.e. instead of each iteration in the for loop]:
    // This program is concerned with this and the mouseDragged methods
         public void mouseReleased(MouseEvent e)
              for( int c = 0; c < xButton.length; c++)
                   if( xButton[c] >= xRandWeight && xButton[c] <= (xRandWeight+50) && yButton[c] >= yRandWeight && yButton[c] <= (yRandWeight+50) )
                        // Have an animation for the scales re-adjusting
                        if( c == 0 )
                             currWeight = (int)(scales.getWeight2());
                             desiredWeight = Integer.parseInt(b1.getLabel());
                             if( desiredWeight >= currWeight )
                                  // More efficient than putting this subtraction straight into for loop
                                  difference = desiredWeight - currWeight;
                                  for( int count = 1 ; count <= difference ; count++ )
                                       scales.setWeight2(currWeight+count);
                                       repaint();

                                            Thread.currentThread().sleep(100);
                                       catch (InterruptedException in)
                                            in.printStackTrace();
                             else
                                  difference = currWeight - desiredWeight;

  • Getting video compressed in MPEG Streamclip for use in FCE

    I have AVI video created by a Flip Video device. The video and audio work fine in QT, VLC, and in the Flip Video software. However, when I open the video in MPEG Streamclip I get video but no sound! I need it to open in Streamclip so I can convert it to DV video for editing in FCE.
    Following conversion there is still no sound. Any suggestions??

    Where are you monitoring the sound? In what application? Did you export from Streamclip to DV or to QuickTime?

  • Converting songs from itunes for use in FCE

    I am a new mac user who switched from adobe premiere to FCE. I need to use some music from my itunes library in my FCE project. How do I convert itunes audio for use in FCE?

    Hi,
    I'm pretty new to FCE, so this might be useless. But I've found a trick (obtained from "Final Cut Express 2 Editing Workshop" by Tom Wolsky) which is to render audio at Item Level. It allows you to render a piece of music to the same sampling level as another item.
    It seems to work fine, but some of these guys who've used this more might know of problems when using it.
    Import your song from the Music folder (or wherever you have them stored) and just go into the Sequence/Render All or Render Selection menus and check the "Item Level." The next time you render your audio, it should render to the same properties as existing items in your project.
    At least, that's how I gather it works. This won't help with copy protected songs as the guys mentioned, but the majority of my songs are not from the iTunes store, so it's useful to me. Hope that helps!
