Audio Books on Wallstreet & OS 9?

Is it feasible to download audio book files from the internet to a Wallstreet G3 PowerBook running OS 9.1 or 9.2.2 and transfer those audio files to a small portable audio player and then listen to them?
Everything I'm seeing refers to OS X or PC stuff. Am I out of luck? Or is it possible to do this using OS 9?
I have a good DSL connection and see that there are lots of free audio books available. But can I download and play them via my old Wallstreets and some kind of portable player?
The Wallstreet is pre-USB, but I do have a PCMCIA card slot USB 1 adapter for it.
Thanks much!

Uh, just to be clear, I am not the OP (Paul Stamser).
I think I have been saying that mp3 audiobooks are pretty straight forward in terms of format and the tricky spots will be getting them onto the player itself.
The URL I referenced earlier had books both in podcast form and as mp3s. The mp3 form was offered as a large file. The podcast form wanted to open a player, with iTunes as an option. I do not recall if the early version of itunes that will run on OS9 had podcast ability. I don't think podcasts were even around in OS9 days. Anyway, if the OP encounters a site of that nature it may require extra steps in order to get those files.
I am not sure, but perhaps some audiobooks are in aac format? I don't do audiobooks myself so I have no idea. AAC is a more recent format in terms of popularity and I am not recalling how easy it is to play under OS9. Even now I have almost no media in that format, just sticking with mp3 for compatibility with my non-iPod player.

Yes it is done through iTunes. The iPhone will never show up in Finder as a device. The following is general information on iTunes sync: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1386 and the following is a previous discussion where the post by Andreas Junge helped others that had a problem syncing audiobooks: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20052732#20052732

  • I can no longer find Harry Potter audio books on iTunes (April 2012)

  • I can not find my audio books on my iPhone.

I have tried to sync my 3 recently purchased audio books with my iPhone with out success.  The files work fine on my MacBook, but I can not see them on my iPhone.  There is no field for Audio Books in  “More” on the phone.  I can see a new graph of data labeled “Documents and Data” at the bottom of the screen in iTunes on the MacBook next to the Sync button.  I presume this to be the files I am looking for, since I appeared immediately after my last sync.  Still I am unable to find or listen to the files on my phone.
In an attempt to correct this problem I just reset my phone.  All works well still no audio books.
Also I have noticed I am also having trouble syncing newly acquired music to the same iPhone.
    iPhone 5 iOS 7.0.4
    MacBook Pro 13-inch,  OS X10.9
    Any suggestions?

If you have them on your computer's iTunes then you can re-sync them to your device (are they in the Books part of your computer's iTunes library ?) - that has not changed, only the layout of iTunes has changed with the left-hand sidebar not automatically showing, though you can enable it (option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC)
If you don't have a copy of them on your computer nor on a backup then you will need to contact iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download - as far as I know it's never been possible to re-download aubiobooks from the store without contacting iTunes support.

  • IPhone 5 works fine with incoming calls and audio books but no one can hear me talk.

I have an add-on blue tooth system in my older Prius and it worked perfectly for a couple of years.  I can still receive phone calls and listen to audio books through my radio speakers but all of a sudden my callers could no longer hear my voice so I have to switch the phone audio source to iPhone so they can hear me.  This happened when I had the iPhone 4 and has continued with the iPhone 5.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Hi, Did you test to see if after 2 or 3 mins the phone started working correctly? mine does then it will work for a day or 2 on every call then I have to do the same thing again.

  • HT201269 I can't download my purchased Audio books to my iPhone 5S. Why not?

I upgraded to the iPhone 5S from 3G and after uploading files, apps and photos I noticed that not all my songs were uploaded and neither were any of my audio books. I clicked on the iTunes app and clicked on the MORE icon where the number 214 is in red. When I click, it shows 214 downloads, none are my audio books. WHen I click on song title it acts like its going to begin download and then I get error message: Unable to Dowload Song - could not be downloaded at this time. I hit the retry button and get the same error message. I cannot find and evidence at all on my iPhone that I have any Audio books that I have purchased through iTunes, and they show records of it. I can't get them to download if there is no reference point.

I have just had the same issue as "wagtribe".
I purchased a audio book for an 83-year-old relative that I'm nursing who is loosing her eyesight and bodily functions in what is now expected to be the last week of her life.
I made the purchase on my 6-Plus synced to one iMac and fully expected it to be available to my iPad mini synced on my second iMac which are all synced to the same iTunes account so that I could leave it in the room with Auntie. Guess what, audio books are not transferable and Apple slugged me twice for the same book just so the old dear could have an audio book from Apple. Apple, I understand you have legal issues with publishers, but as we Australian's would say "Fair go Mate!" Apple can do better, as amply demonstrated with other iTunes file types.

  • HT201272 How do I download audio books that are not on my purchased list? That I have purchased.

I have purchased a few audio books on iTunes and in the process of upgrading the audio is no longer on my iCloud account. How do I get these books back? The books are in my purchase history. But iTunes would make me pay for them again if I get it from there.

Audiobooks are currently a one-time only download, so they won't appear in the cloud for re-downloading. Have you not got a copy of them on your computer and/or on a backup ? If not then you can try contacting Apple, but they are under no obligation to let you re-download them : http://www.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/contact/

  • My audio books that were bought through Itunes on my Iphone do not show up on my Itunes account.

I bought audio books on my iphone, but they do not show up on my itunes account on my computer.  The books I purchased through the computer show up on my itunes account.  My phone is at it's max and I need to remove these books, but do not want to lose them.  Thank you for your assistance.

This isn't completely coherent so I am not sure what is wrong other than some (al?) of your tracks have broken links.
If you are browsing through iTunes you are not looking at files you are looking at data entries that point to files, with those locations being incorrect right now.
There isn't a file called iTunes media, there is a folder that should be in your iTunes folder called that.
You mention something about external drives. I presume one is for your Time Machine backup but is the other one used for iTunes?  If so, what do you keep there?

  • Hi, I have purchased an audio book on iTunes from an iMac and it does not show up on the cloud so I can't download it on my iPhone. Does anyone know why and how I can proceed to transfer the audio book purchase?

    Hi
I have purchased an audio book from iTunes with my iMac.
Now I wanted to listen to it on my iPhone so I proceeded to transfer the purchase and looked for the book in the purchased section of the store in the iTunes on my iPhone but it did not show up.
Does anyone know why and how I can transfer the audio book purchased on my iPhone so I can listen while away from the desk?
    Thank you,
    Sanya

Can you find the audio book by using the Search feature on the iPod?
Do you have the right boxes checked to sync the audio book to the iPod?
iTunes: Syncing media content to iOS devices and iPod
Note you have to check the boxes in Books pane for the iPod in iTunes to sync books in general and another box to sync Audio Books.

  • I've downloaded audio books successfully to my iPod, but they don't show up on my iTunes.. and I want to delete some.

I've successfully downloaded audio books to my iPod for years but now they don't show up on iTunes, not under Music, not under books or Audiobooks - nowhere!
And I want to delete some...

    Hello, mimi2216.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This could be a result of Automatic Downloads not being enabled, the apps were too large to download via the cellular data network or a cellular data connection was not available at the time of download.  The best option would be to download the missing apps via the steps in the second article below.

  • I have audio books on my ipod, but when I hook it up to my computer they don't show up so I can't take them off or anything.  Now I am out of space.  How do I get them to show up on the itunes sync screens?

I have audio books that are on my ipod touch, but when I hook it up to my computer to make changes they don't show up.  I can't add new music, because it keeps telling me I am out of room.  When I go to the book tab at the top it doesn't show any so I can't take them off.  How do I get them to show up?

iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
Authorizing a computer does not cause media to magically appear.
Media is only where the user puts it.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.

  • HT201272 Purchase history in itunes on pc does not show audio books that I have downloaded. How do I download them to my itunes library?

I have the current version of itunes on my pc and my wife had downloaded a few audio books to her i phone under the same account. Her phone was damaged and was replaced. I had backed up the phone and restored the new one but her audio books were not put on the new phone. When i look in my itunes library on my pc the book does not show up. In the purchase history I can find when i purchased it and the order number but there is no option to download it. Then under the "purchased" area it gives the options of music movies tv shows apps and books (not audio books) but audio books are no where to be found. If i can get any help figuring it out i would appreciate it.

    Hey innerev2003,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If, while searching through your past purchases, items are unavailable to download and show a "Purchased" button, they are still on your computer. It may be best to search your iTunes library by clicking Music, then use the search bar at the top right.
If you are completely sure the items are no longer in your library, try signing out of the iTunes Store, and then back in.
