[Audio] Browser Quicktime is a black bar instead of a player.

Hi all,
When I open a music file from a website (liveset from DJs for example) a new tab opens up with the little quicktime bar.
The problem is, the music plays but the bar is just plain black.
So I cant scroll back and forth or see where the 'play' and 'volume' buttons are.
If I just click anywhere on the bar I can scroll through the set but its just not right you know?

Quicktime output has black bars, any help?

You can see my settings below, all seems fine, but when outputting I have large black bars ;eft and right.

It doesn't matter what size your clip is. The video output is 720x480. If you place the small cip inside a standard video player, it will expand because the video player has to fill the output. Umm, that's not EXACTLY what's going on. The video feed cannot distinguish between big and little clips. it only knows to fill the screen with whatever it sees.

Videos on youtube and bbc radio iplayer display a black box instead of the player box.

so yesterday morning i was using youtube and bbc iplayer fine and then last night they suddenly stopped working and i can't think of any reason why, i haven't updated or made any changes to anything in the last day. the pages load fine but where there was previoulsy the video or in the case of iplayer the picture with the controls on, there is now just a black box. i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling flash player but otherwise don't know what to do!
i've also tried using internet explorer and have the same problem with this. i've tried to update firefox but cant get it to work, although i imagine this won't help anyway since ive got the same problem in internet explorer.
Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

You can check for problems caused by a recent Flash 11.3 update and possibly downgrade to Flash 11.2 or 10.3.

Black Bar with Quicktime Media in Vista x64

When I try to launch Quicktime media files in Firefox or IE I get a black bar instead of the playback controls. However, when I make the browser run in "Windows XP" Compatibility mode the controls run fine, but my theme runs in windows vista basic.

QuickTime Player is not supported on 64 bit Windows OS's and this is a known "bug" for these users.
"Compatibility Mode" uses a 32 bit version with proper results.
You must choose.

Smart Playlist has black bar for My Rating stars

When I select the "My Rating" option in a Smart Playlist, I see a black bar instead of the 5 grey stars to select from.
I am running version 7. Any ideas what is causing this?

Try updating your video drivers and directx software.
Also look at your hardware acceleration -- at least one user reported that increasing the acceleration made the stars appear.

Why do I get black bars in my .mov file (AME CS4)?

I got a .wmv. It has the size 720*540. Everything is fine. No black bars
Except ... I need the file as a .mov.
When I encode it in AME and choose Quicktime I get black bars in the right and the left sides of the movie.
In AME I can see that my source and my output sizes are not the same. The output size is only 720*480, but I can't change it to 720*540.
What can I do to get rid of the black bars?

As Jim's answer indicates, some codecs enforce specific dimensions. Most relevant here is the fact that codecs intended for television are strictly constrained to the sizes for television standards. You have chosen an NTSC (National Televison Standards Council) codec in the Video Codec menu, which gives a rather strong hint that this is one such constrained codec.

Test page shows only black bars

I followed Bob's instructions and actually got my Designjet to wake up! I have its parallel cable connected to a USB adapter and programmed to the USB001 virtual port in my newer windows 7-64 bit computer. I use the driver for the HP Designjet 600 (E/a0) which has always worked fine on my old 32-bit windows xp pro computer. The plotter responds to the 'print test page' command but shows solid black bars instead of text. Suggestions anyone? (I paid $5500 for this beautiful machine and it runs as good as new. I refuse to throw it in the landfill. My original deskjet 882c still runs perfectly, despite all the windows upgrades over the past 30 years. If they're not willing to maintain their drivers, HP should disclose that their plotters have limited lifespans no matter how much they cost.)

I'm not computer expert but I solved my own problem getting my Designjet c1633b to print new autocad drawings through my 64bit computer. All I had to do what plot my drawings to pdf files. I was then able to print out the pdf's on my 24 year old HP Designjet like it was brand new. I had a small problem at first: my drawings were shrunk and the margins were oversized so the scale of the printed image was off. I solved that by setting the pdf print command to "full size". Sorry HP, but as long as this beautiful machine keeps running, I'll keep using it.

Black bars appearing on website while browsing with iOS 6

I have a WP site and when I browse it using my iOS 6 iPhone it shows black bars at the bottom of each post.
Others using iOS 6 also have the same issue on my site but those using older iOS do not see the black bars...
Anyone else having this problem with Safari in iOS 6?

Yes I see this too. Using the WiFi hotspot does not have this problem but is a poor workaround. I also upgraded both devices to iOS 6, and tried resetting network settings on the hotspot device, to no avail. I filed a bug report at http://bugreporter.apple.com , you may wish to do the same.

Black bar below email instead of menu bar

After installing the software update, I have a solid black bar below my email boxes. I can't reply, forward, delete or move mail without it. Is there a solution for this?

I've figured it out myself; I just had to reset the Iphone as follows:

When I render my video I get a black bar on the left side of the screen

I just upgraded to FCS 2 and so far it's been a complete waste of money. I'm having nothing but problems with FCP, Compressor, and QMaster. I will just post my FCP problem here.
I've edited a weekly video podcast and everything looks great, until I render it and export it. When I render it, I get a constant, solid black bar on the far left of the video that takes up about 5% of the screen. My layers are definitely sized correctly to fill up the entire canvas, and they are all centered. I cannot figure out why I am getting this black bar or how to get rid of it without ditching the upgrade and going back to FCP5.1.
I have already tried completely uninstalling the FCS suite and reinstalling. No luck. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

My original source material is in Apple Intermediate Codec, with 32-bit float audio and a variable frame rate. This has not been friendly to FCP, so I use Quicktime to convert it to Apple ProRes with 24-bit audio and 29.97 frame rate. This is what I import into FCP.
My sequence settings are set to the same specs as my source material. 854x480, square pixels, no field dominance, Apple ProRes compression.
The black bar on the left side of the screen shows up before I even export. It shows up when I render everything.
I am exporting with Quicktime Conversion to:
MP4
h.264 codec
720x405
1000 video bit rate
Main Profile
No cropping/filters or anything.
The ONLY thing I did different before upgrading to FCP6 was that I used Apple Intermediate Codec all the way through. I was told by an FCP instructor that writes and publishes all kinds of FCP training material that I should upgrade to FCP6 and use the Apple ProRes422 Codec instead, so that's what I'm trying to do.
I am going back to restart my project using Apple Intermediate Codec all the way through like I used to, but it will be awhile before I can tell if that solved the problem. Either way, I would like to be using the ProRes codec....

Exporting problems, won't stay in original aspect ratio..... (black bars!)

So I'm trying to export footage off of my 5DMK2, I've worked in Final Cut Express, added in transitions and some audio edits, fine, works great.
But when I export it adds black bars to the top and bottom, I fully understand why they exist on videos that are not actually 16x9, but my video IS, the files that were imported were true 16x9 ratio, and now in the export it has black bars.
I just want the video to have no black bars at all and keep the original aspect ratio of 16x9.
I've tried almost everything I can think of. Exporting it in various different ways. It makes no sense to have 16x9 videos to have black bars on them to fit into 16x9 windows..... I have no idea why it's doing this.

There you go, that's the problem. You placed 1920x1080 footage in a DV-NTSC sequence, and it scaled it down to fit, thus adding the black bars.
Here's what you do now:
1. Create a new sequence ( +File > New Sequence+ )
2. Select that new sequence in the browser, and go to +Sequence > Settings > Load Sequence Preset > Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60+
3. Copy your edited footage in your original sequence
4. Paste it into your new sequence that you created
5. Select all of the clips in the new sequence
6. Go to +Edit > Remove Attributes+
7. Check the +Basic Motion+ and Distort boxes
8. Click OK.
That should make it look better. If you did any keyframing or adjusting within the motion tab of the viewer you will have to redo that work, but at least this gets your original problem fixed. You can then export as you'd like, for DVD export to Quicktime Movie.
In the future, if using 1920x1080 footage you should change the sequence to match it before putting the clips in the sequence. You can make the sequences default to this setting by going to +File > Easy Setup+ and selecting the +AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60+ option.

IMovie is outputting my movie with big black bars at top and bottom that I don't want

So, let me try and explain...
I have recorded gameplay footage of my game directly from my Mac screen using Quicktime's Record Screen option. I've tried recording both in fullscreen mode (with my game also running in fullscreen mode) and a section of the screen by dragging the mouse to select a 640X960 box (with my game running in windowed mode which is displayed at 640x960 resolution).
This initial recording direct from the screen displays fine, both when I view it in windowed mode and when I view it fullscreen, with the height of the game stretching to the full height of the video area but obviously with big black borders to either side in fullscreen mode (as it's basically iPhone ratio in portrait mode).

The problem is when I try to import the movie into iMovie, mess around with some fade-ins and music and stuff and then output the edited movie via iMovie...
When I then try to view this outputted movie in windowed mode on certain sites (Kickstarter) my game footage doesn't take up the full height of the video and instead floats in the middle with big black bars at the top and bottom, which I don't want. It's fine when I go fullscreen but the problem is that when I load this video into Kickstarter it shows the non-fullscreen view of the video with this big black border and it looks really amateur.
This is what Kickstarter shows in windowed mode i.e. the way you see Kickstarter videos by default when you press Play; unless I go fullscreen and then it takes up the full heigh of the view.
Note: Windowed mode actually looks fine when viewed directly on my Mac but I know it's not Kickstarter that is causing the issue because I can see in the thumbnail preview on my Mac that the video is somehow encoded with the big black bars at the top and bottom. Also, I uploaded the unedited videos to Kickstarter just to check and they display fine. So it's definitely iMovie that is adding these annoying black borders at the top and bottom for whatever reason (and I'm not intentionally scaling the video down in iMove or anything like that as far as I know). I also can't use the unedited footage however because it has no sound and no transitions etc.
Does anyone know what night be causing this and how to get rid of it.

You are lucky to see anything - iMovie 5 is not really compatible with Snow Leopard, which only supports iMovie 6 and above.
Snow Leopard only runs on Intel Macs. iMovie 5 was never written, AFAIK, for Intel, just for the PPC Macs they had in those old days!

Aspect Ratio Messed Up? Black Bars?

I'm trying to make a SD DVD from 1080p footage. I used Apple's Compressor to make 720x480 m2v and ac3 files for a few short clips I am putting on the DVD.
I'd like to use a Button transition when I click to view a certain clip (a 3 second video) that plays before the main clip.
However, since Encore doesn't allow you to use two separate files (an audio and a video file) for a Button transition, I've tried simply importing a high quality 1920x1080 video file into encore from AME.
The problem is that the Button transition video has black bars on the side, and I've tried my hardest to figure out why it is doing this. I've even tried exporting from AME at 720x480, and Encore persists in placing these black bars on the side.
If I export a ac3 and m2v from Compressor (or a wav with AME) I can only use the audio or the video for the Button transition. I want both.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I'd like all my videos, including my Button transitions, to fill the screen.

Thank you for your reply, I'll explain more in depth what my issue is.
I used Compressor for the DVD files because I'm more familiar with it.
However, since a Button Transition only allows you to select one file, I exported a high quality Quicktime file 1920x1080 and imported that into Encore with the assumption it would transcode during the burning process.
I exported this file from Adobe Media Encoder from a timeline directly from Premiere, and tried a number of combinations. I tried selecting "scale to fill" or "stretch to fill" and even exported at 720x480 (the supposed dimensions of the DVD in Encore) but this generated a "wrong pixel aspect ratio" error.
I couldn't do "Transcode Now" on the file because apparently the "asset was not in use" even though it was serving as a transition.
Is there a way to apply "scale to fill" in Encore? Is it something you do in the transcode settings for the project?
