Audio capture at USB port

I would like to connect audio line-out from a radio to the USB port of a macbook. In the macbook I would like to capture the audio signal using VLC and stream it out onto a Squeezenetwork.
Does anyone know if this is possible on the macbook?
Thanks in advance.

One of recommendations I found, was to use and external USB audio adapter, such as Griffin iMic (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic) or something a like.

I've been connecting a sony PD170 via firewire to my Macbook pro to record directly using Quicktime pro. Can I use the usb port (and mini audio in) to accomplish this with a camcorder that doesn't have a fire wire port but does have USB out?

It could just be a bad disc - I use Verbatim and have only had one fail in a ten-year time period. Try getting a batch of Verbatims and see if you have any problems. I didn't even know that there were Kodak branded discs...

  • External USB2 drive doesn't work on left USB port

    Hi,
I have an 2,5" external usb hard drive which works on my right usb port, but not on my left one, when i try the disk on the left port, afterwards the usb port is dead untill restart, even my mighty mouse does'nt work on it. My logic board and board with audio and left usb port are already replaced, without result, also the cable beween logic board and daughter board...
The disk works on a colleage's macbook pro on both ports...
    what to do?

    Try resetting the PRAM:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Make sure also that no USB devices are connected when you put the machine to sleep (close the lid, or start energy saver).
A restart will clear a hung USB port usually.

    Michael,
Thanks. I haven't mixed down the audio or checked the number of tracks in Prefs. Good points.
As far as a mixdown goes, I'll definitely give it a try, though I wonder whether or not the tracks will be recognized during mix down recording - given that you can't hear either of those segments in playback. Just have to try.
Re the preferred number of allowed tracks - I'll go check as soon as I send this off, but I'm not sure that applies in this case, since the two Channels containing the segments that are pinked out are not in additional tracks. I should have mentioned that other audio clips and segments on the same Channels in the SAME tracks ARE heard in playback. As are two additional track in the 2nd Sequence. It's only when the two sequences are joined that the pink tinted segments can't be heard. Within the sequence the same audio cuts playback as they should. Thanks again &

  • How do I use the USB port on my MBP for audio output

I am a fairly new commercial sound provider running live sound and the occassional itunes type playback at events.  I currently use a Y cable from the headphone output of my MBP osX  into the RCA inputs on my audio mixer.  On an older HP laptop I was able to use a USB output into the USB input of the mixer and the sound was a lot better in quality. I wish to do the same using the new MBP but when I plugged into the right side USB port I received no audio output.  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks howardfrom nh.

Have you gone into the Sound/Output system preferences to see if your mixer shows up there as a valid output device and if it does selected it there? If it doesn't appear, have you confirmed with the manufacturer of your mixer that it is compatible with Macs and if so asked if there are any drivers you need to install?
    Regards.

  • No Audio or USB Ports after Recovery on Satellite L505D-S5983

I have recently done a system recovery with disks I created when I originally got my Satellite L505D-S5983. Which put the laptop back to an "out of the box" state...supposedly... I have been asking on a Microsoft forum for help with my problems, with limited luck.... It is still not working. I'm pasting my original posts here hoping that maybe somebody on here can help me.
    POST 1:
My Toshiba Satellite L505D is running 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. After about 4 months of downtime I recently started it back up. There were roughly 37 updates to install when I turned it on, as expected. The updates were downloaded and installed, but when the system was restarted the system froze as soon as the desktop loaded. I booted multiple times and every time it completely freezes immediately after start up. I am not even able to open the task manager (ctrl+alt+del). They system boots perfectly fine in safe mode, and I ran what diagnostics I could find and nothing shows up....according to Windows everything is fine.
After Going through this multiple times, I got sick of it and decided to do a system recovery. Not a system RESTORE...it was a system RECOVERY. The HDD was completely wiped, and the system was supposedly returned to its original form as it was out of the box. Getting my hopes up as it finished its process... The system worked fine through the initial setup (language, time, etc.) and then as soon as the desktop loaded it froze again!
So here I am with a completely wiped HDD (except for the factory toshiba software), and a Windows OS that will only work in safe mode... I would like to avoid reinstalling Windows, I don't have any disks or anything. So any help would be appreciated
P.S. let me elaborate on what I mean by "froze". The system is completely non-responsive. No cursor movement at all, touchpad, keyboard, USB ports, nothing. When I did the restore the cursor, touchpad and keyboard worked through the initial settings only. Even when the desktop is loading i get movement for a second or two before everything freezes.
    REPLY I RECIEVED:
    Hi,
Since the computer is working in safe mode, I would suggest you to start the computer in clean boot to check which third party program is causing the issue. To configure your computer to clean boot follow the link
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow step 7 in the article to boot to normal startup.
If the issue does not persist in clean boot then refer ‘Step 3’, ‘step 4’ and ‘step 5’ from the following link to narrow done the issue and find out which service or startup item is causing the issue.
MY RESPONSE POSTING MY CURRENT ISSUE:
Thank you, and yes that's exactly what it was. It turned out to be an ATI program for my AMD graphics card that was not installed properly. It makes me wonder if I had to do the recovery in the first place lol.
However now I have a whole other issue. Windows is now telling me that "No audio output device is installed".....
In device manager the yellow "!" is there (High Definition Audio Controller), it tells me that it is not working....yet it says that the best drivers are installed! So yeah...I have no audio now. The only info windows gives me for the sound card is that it from Microsoft... with a driver version of 6.1.7601.17514....which naturally doesn't really help me since I have no idea what card or mobo I have . Is there any way for me to find out what I need other than opening up my laptop?

First run SFC /scannow and checkdisk (chkdsk) as the cause of these issues might

Also update or re-install the driver.
Control Panel - Device Manager - SOUNDS - look for HD Audio - Mine says RealTek High
Definition Audio (that is an example and yours may have an entirely different name/maker).
Write down description make and model - double click on it - drivers tab - write down version.
Now Click UPdate Drivers which may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers.
Then RIGHT CLICK on it and UNINSTALL - REBOOT - this will rebuild the driver stack.
1st go to system maker's site and look for latest driver Download - SAVE - go to right click on
and RUN AS ADMIN (This is your fallback.) REBOOT after each driver installation.
NOTE : Sound drivers often rollback so check the version after installation and the
reboot to see if the version you installed is there, if not repeat the install - reboot
until it is. It can take several tries depending on how many rollbacks it does.
Then do same for Device Maker's site.
Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.

Ok...so I have installed all of the appropriate drivers that I thought I may need from this website. I have tried ALL of those system analysis programs that were suggested. Every one of them lists my mobo simply as a Toshiba motherboard, with no audio card information. Which I'm assuming that is because it has an internal sound processor. My problem is that none of the properties, or ANYTHING I try, will give me information on what I need to fix this...
I would be more than willing to run the recovery again if I knew that I had everything I actually need... When I created my original recovery disks it created a third disk with "apps and drivers". I installed all of them...and still here I am... And I haven't even STARTED on my USB port issue yet...those don't work either, and they don't even show up in my Device Manager...sigh...
And please, a response that doesn't look like an automated response to try and sell software like the last one I recieved from the Microsoft forum would be appreciated
Thank you for your time, and apologies for the lengthy post, but I wanted to provide as much info as possible.

I would try another restore of the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. Maybe something went wrong in the process. Make sure everything works before applying any updates and adding any hardware or software.
Then add things carefully, rebooting Windows and testing the USB and audio at each step.
    Please note this.
The only info windows gives me for the sound card is that it from Microsoft... with a driver version of 6.1.7601.17514....which naturally doesn't really help me since I have no idea what card or mobo I have . Is there any way for me to find out what I need other than opening up my laptop?

  • Audio output and left USB port is not working!

Hi! I have MacBook Air 13" late 2010, Audio output and left USB port is not working!
    What happened?
    Part No.: Z0JH000TE RS

If the left USB port doesnt work with an external mouse its seems to be a hardware malfunction of this USB port.
The newest BIOS is already installed?
Have you removed all USB ports from device manager and restarted your notebook?
If you have already tried this, contact an authorized service provider. The guys can try to fix this issue and it should be covered by warranty, if you still have warranty on this notebook. :)

  • Boot Camp Windows 7 do not recognise wifi, ethernet, USB ports and has a scary red light in audio jack output!

    Hi!
I have just tried to install Windows 7 x86 version on my MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion and a couple of strange things start appearing:
        1. On the Boot Camp Assistant first screen, I tried to download the drivers and after about 15min the system responding that the server did not responded.
        2. I went further and installed the Win7 without making the ISO as requested by the assistant and with no driver burned on a CD
        3. After installed the Win7 I noticed that it did not recognise the WIFI in my home nor any other in the area;
        4. There is a freaking RED LIGHT coming from my Audio jack output that I have never seen in my life... and that scares me!
        5. The USB ports does not works on Win7 side !
        6. The ethernet does not work, Win7 just don´t recognise it...
        7. There is no Boot Camp on Win7 side to be deployed...
Basically I will use Windows to run Quicken for Windows, but I can´t acces my backups on Dropbox because I do not have intercet access, and obviously I am not going to be able to back up new files.
Is there someone able to help me?
    I have:Boot Camp 5.0.0 / Win7 Ultimate x86 / MacBook 2,5Ghz Intel Core i5 MID-2012 / Memories 4GB amd 500GB/ OS X 10.8.1 / Boot Camp partition with 50Gb for Windows.
    I appreciate all help!

Did you make sure to install the Bootcamp utilities after installing Windows? They can be found in the boot disk/usb flash that Bootcamp creates (check for a folder called "Windows Support").These should enable sound/video/trackpad/etc.to work with full functionaliity under Windows (you may need to reboot after doing so). After installing them, you may also want to run Windows Update to make sure you get the latest drivers.
As far as the red light, many models of Macbook Pros are equipped with a digital Audio out. You can either use the standard analog 3.5mm Stereo jack (standard headphone connector), a 3.5mm miniSPDIF digital coax or miniTOSLINK digital optical cable (hence the red light). Windows may not know how to handle to audio out port until the proper drivers are installed and it may be enabling the digital signal by default. Installing the drivers mentioned above should set this back to normal operation.
    hope this helps.
    Toodles!

  • Capturing Video from a Camera that only has a USB port

I have read a number of posts from people who have been frustrated because they can not 'capture' video from a video camera that only has a USB port on it.  Unfortunately, Premier wants to see a Firewire connection; otherwise, it won't connect to a camera.   However, it is still very easy to import your video clips from such a camera into Premier Pro:
    1. Turn on your video camera and connect it to your computer via the USB connections.
    2. In Premier, go to the Media Browser.
    3. In the Media Browser, you will see all the drives on your computer. Amongst those drives will be a drive that was created for your camera. (It will be identified as X: (Removable).  Double click on that drive and you will see all your recorded video clips in the column just to the right.
    4. Highlight any/all clips that you want to import. Then, simply drag those clips/files up into your Project Organizer (normally, in the upper left corner of the page)
    That's it.
You'll probably find this method of importing your clips/files off of your camera easier than if you did have a Firewire and utilized the 'Capture' function.

And a bigger problem will be that that camera (with its card or HDD) will have to be connected, whenever one wishes to edit, and it cannot be overwritten to).
As has been mentioned, the Project file does NOT contain any Assets, with the exception of Titles created in PrPro's Titler. This ARTICLE will give a bit more background on what is in the Project file, plus a bit more.
The same sort of problem can arise if one Imports a VOB from a DVD-Video disc, without Copying the VOB's over to the HDD. First, that DVD must be inserted for each editing session, and things will be horribly slow.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Distortion using USB port for audio output

I did some research in the Mac Mini community regarding the problem I'm experiencing but most of the posts were several years old so I thought I would start a new thread.
I am using one of the USB ports on my 2011 Mac Mini (2.3GHz, i5) to feed a High Resolution Technologies Streamer II USB DAC which then connects to my audio systems integrated amplifier. The issue I'm experiencing is that I am getting distortion when I first open iTunes and start a music track playing. I can hear the music but it is overlayed with this static like distortion. It seems to happen specifically when I first wake the computer from sleep and open iTunes and try to play a track. If I close and reopen iTunes and start a track playing again the distorion usually goes away and all tracks after the initial distortion play fine. I've done troubleshooting with regards to the HRT USB DAC and made sure the Streamer II is operating on its own USB Bus and I've tried a powered USB Hub to feed only the Streamer II but the distortion continues. So aside from the obvious hardware malfunction possibilities I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem. Thank you,

well i dont have the cable yet i just was wondering if that would work. Yes it has bluetooth but i was told you cant use the bluetooth for a modem. Dont know why the phone has the option. How would i set up that option?

  • Missing USB ports and no audio in 64-bit but OK in 32-bit

I recently lost audio output from my MacBook Pro.  As usual, I had been fiddling with several things at once so don't know how or if I triggered the issue. I had been dealing with Airtunes problems but assumed network issues. I had also been trying to mount NTFS volumes with MacFuse and NTFS-3G but had compatibility issues with Lion.
Looking in the Sound control panel, Audio MIDI setup and System Profiler, no internal output option was available.  I did have SoundFlower and Digidesign options.
While troubleshooting this, I noticed that only the frontmost of the three USB ports on the MBP was working.
I booted into Snow Leopard from an external drive and everything was working fine.
Researching the issue, a reference to 32 vs 64 bit got me thinking, so I booted into Lion in 32-bit mode and everything worked again.  Back into 64-bit, no audio, only one USB again.
I've removed the SoundFlower and Digidesign stuff (incompatible with Lion anyway) and the NTFS stuff without effect.
Can anyone advise me where to look next?  I've browsed the logs but don't really know what I'm looking for.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I've got a temporary fix , but it sounds like you need a full recovery . After the HP/Compaq Screen flashes and disappears at startup , start pressing F8 like a boss (4 or 5 times) , you'll see a screen pop up with many options on it , near the bottom is one that says "disable driver signature requirement" or something similar . Arrow down and select that one , don't think it works after reboot , but like I said , it's just a temporary fix .
    hope that helped
If it did hit me with some Kudos , I need all the help i can get .

  • Audio not working.  USB ports not working.

My display worked perfectly for a few months.  It started when the audio stopped working.  The option to use the display audio disappeared from the settings.  I made due.  Then the monitor started not waking up when I would hit keys on my wireless keyboard.  I had to open my macbook pro first, wake it, then the monitor would turn on...then I could shut my macbook.  Now the USB ports are not working.  This is very frustrating as I have searched the forums..tried everything there and have had zero success.  Should I just return this to the store?  Please advise.  I am tired of dealing with this as the features that are not working are the REASON that I shelled out a grand for this monitor.

As much as I loved the display itself and design of the Thunderbolt (problems asside), I did take mine back to Apple. It was not just the one issue but several which all added up. Having said that I wouldn't give up on it as I'm now missing it compared to my 17" screen on the MacBook Pro which suddenly appears to be puny in size.
Towards the latter part of owning the TB Display, I had a temporary work around which was to utilise the three USB ports on the MacBook which I experienced as being problem free; therefore I plugged a USB Hub into one of the MacBook Pro's USB ports effectively giving me several to use for lesser equipment, then the remaining two USB's on the MacBook Pro I used for more critical higher bandwidth devices like the Bose Companion 5. Then less critical devices OR devices that don't seem to have any problems with the TB Display - I then plugged into the back of the Thundebolt Display. I know you shouldn't have to do this but for the time it seems to help.
Also with regard to another problem I had with sound, see my other post (link below - 5th post down) where I was able to avoid another problem for the time up until I took it back, but this might not have been a permanent solution and I am no longer able to tell for sure.
