Audio capture with mono microphone

I have an old JVC GR-DVM5 and I just bought an audio-technica ATR35s lapel microphone. It is a mono microphone. I would like to use this setup to record simple interviews.
I can set the Log and Capture Device control to 'non-controllable device' and get a recording of both audio and video, but the audio is very 'left' dominant - even if I connect (toggle) the stero/mono seettings in the 'clip settings' pane.
Is there a better way to do this, given the equipment I have? I would like the audio levels to be equal (balanced) between both left and right channels.
thanks!

How do I get it to just capture to a single channel?
You can't. FCP likes to work in channel pairs and likes to assume stereo (in a world in which I believe extremely little acquisition is done in usable stereo).
You deal with which audio goes where after capture.
Just capture it as mono and either:
- delete the unwanted audio clip after moving to the timeline, which is exceedingly annoying, or
- turn the unwanted source audio down in the bins, which is kind of annoying, or
- use your track targets and channel patches to allow a place for only the wanted audio when you put it on timeline, which is still annoying but a lot less so.
Then either:
- Pan each and every audio clip to center on the timeline, which would be mind-numbing, or
- Push the "Downmix" button in the Audio Mixer window, which is easy but then makes it very difficult to designate any stereo in your sequence (e.g. music and effects).
I hope my frustration with FCP's handling of mono audio doesn't show.
Better yet for you I would say: record the same mic to both channels, with one being at a safer lower level than the other. This way you have a backup channel if things get out of control loud.

  • Hello, I would really like to know how many decibels does an iPod 5/iPhone 5 capture with its microphone?

Hi, I would like to know the amount of decibels (dBA) an iPod 5, iPhone 5 and iPad 3 (and newer) can capture with its microphone. Thanks

Right, I finally managed to get it sorted out.
iCloud only accept version 3.0 vcards, and the one I was using were version 2.1 so that's why it wasn't picking it up. So the easy way to get that sorted out is, use a gmail account.
I know you don't wanna do it because you think it's too much hassle and stuff, but trust me it only takes 5 minutes and that's it.
    1. Create a Gmail Account.
    2. Export your Old VCard files to the Gmail Account.
    3. Now Import them from Gmail to your PC again.
And, that's it, that's just makes the new imported version in 1 file contains your all contacts in version 3.0. Now you can just upload that on icloud and then sync it with your iphone.
That's what I did and it worked, and I am sure if you wanna replace this file in the Contacts folder under your User Account in Windows and then try to sync Contacts in Tunes, it should work, but as I said, I did it with iCloud and it worked for me. So aye, that's pretty much it. Phewwww..
Been searching for it for the whole day and it took 5 minutes in the end, badass...
Anyway, don't lose hope and always Google for everything!

  • Simultaneous Video & Multitrack Audio Capture with FCS?

Hello! We're about to start videotaping our services; we have a JVC GY-HD110U video camera, we bought a 24-inch iMac with 4GB RAM a couple of weeks ago, and we just ordered Final Cut Studio.
We already have iMovie and Final Cut Express, so I know I can capture the sermons from the JVC with no problem; I get a direct feed from the pastor's mic out of the sound board into the camera, so I have good audio.
However, we want to record the entire service, and I'd like to be able to get a multitrack audio recording so I can mix it down later. Assuming I get a mixer with FireWire, can I simultaneously capture video from the camera, and multitrack audio from the mixer, using Final Cut Pro? Or do I need to record the multitrack audio to a different computer, and add it to the captured video?
    Thanks,
    Steve

I think the OP means they want to be able to mix the audio in STP or FCP, and not be stuck with a stereo mix upon capture.
But you still can't capture audio from a different source as the video at the same time.
I can highly recommend the Alesis HD24 24track hard disk recorder, with the optional FW tray. This thing is awesome. You can jam sync the time code from your camera to it and have matching timecode. Just run the outputs out of your mixer (it doesn't have mic preamps) and enable as many tracks as you're using, and record it to the hard drive. Then pull that drive (easy) and connect the FW tray and hook up to your computer. Transfer to your scratch disk. Import the files into FCP, sync to your video using the timecode. Mix in FCP or send to STP and mix.
Great solution that's really come down in price. Didn't really catch on as a technology, but I've used it several times without fail. I get a bit nervous recording anything directly to a computer, but this thing is rock solid.

  • Question on Audio working with mono

When you use a lav mic, the audio will be in mono of course. My question is, how do you place the sound to play on both speakers?
Is this a setting in FCE?
    Thanks !
    Eric

Put the audio in the timeline and press Control-period to center pan the audio.

  • Compressing audio/video with mono sound

    Hey all,
I have a video that has mono sound. On the left channel no sound and on the right channel the sound itself. Now I want to use compressor to compress the video and audio to AppleTV format. When I convert it the sound stays the same.
My questions is how to I combine both audio channels to 1 channel or how to I get sound in both channels.
    Stefan Segers

To get the audio to be routed to both left and right output channels, open the video in your NLE (FCE, FCP, Premier, etc) and pan the audio to center. Export and recompress in Compressor.

  • Merging and saving audio capture + file from disk

    Hi,
I need to combine an audio file (read from disk) with an audio capture from a microphone and save the combined audio to a file.
I created processors for both, merged the data sources and created a processor from the merged data source.
If I use that as an input to a player, it seems to play OK : I hear the combination of the audio file and the microphone over the speakers (albeit with a delay of the microphone input).
But when I try to save this merged processor's data source (I tried 2 different ways based on samples I found) I get the following exceptions respectively

Now that you've got as far as doing GUIs, you must learn to read the API. Here/s a link.
Is it something like: out.textBox.text() ??
Not quite. In fact, not at all. The syntax implies that out has a member textBox which in turn has a method text. That's pretty far removed from reality, isn't it?
From the code you posted, you apparently know that out.println(...) takes a String parameter. Now go look up the API and find a method of JTextField that returns a String, that Returns the text contained in this TextComponent.
    ^Hint: it's a method inherited from JTextComponent^
Get the text from the JTextField and pass it as a parameter to out.println. That's all there is to it.
    luck, db

  • USB audio problems with 2013 iMac

I'm having a strange audio problem with USB microphones and headsets. The issue with my Logitech H650e is shown in this screencast I recorded. In the first part of the screencast, I am not speaking into the mic—yet you can see the levels fluctuating as if there is static playing (not in a natural pattern that you'd see when someone is speaking). In the next part of the video I demonstrate that selecting the built-in iMac mic for input, and then re-selecting the Logitech headset temporarily solves the problem. You can see the input start to fluctuate normally as it should when I am speaking. But at 0:31 in the screencast, you can see the input levels freeze and stop registering anything. I continued to speak until the end of the screencast, but no input was detected. For this screencast, I was on a Go To Webinar call, but the problem occurs regardless of whether I'm using Skype, Go To Webinar, GarageBand or any other software.
The problem with my Blue Yeti USB microphone is also different. In that case, the input does not freeze as it does with the Logitech headset. The levels appear as you would expect, and it seems to work. However, the person on the other end can hear static in the background, even though I don't hear it in my own headphones. I learned this because I just tried to do a Skype interview with the Blue Yeti, and the interviewer told me they could hear static. We closed Skype and called each other back twice, but the problem persisted. Then, suspecting the problem was related to what I described above with the Logitech, I unplugged the Yeti and then plugged it into my Macbook Air 2013 (also running Mavericks). Lo and behold the static completely disappeared.
My Griffin iMic and Audio Technica lavalier mic (attached to the iMic) behaves similarly to the Yeti, except in this case I can hear the static when I speak with my monitoring headphones. The input works but I get a lot of cracking and static in the background. This was confirmed by calling the Skype Test Call number and recording a message, which is then played back.
    Here are the facts:
All 3 of my USB audio microphones/headsets do not work with my 2013 iMac running Mavericks
All 3 of these microphones/headsets worked fine with my 2008 Mac Pro running Mountain Lion
All 3 of these microphones/headsets work fine with my 2013 Macbook Air running Mavericks
In this other thread, several people are reporting similar issues with the iMac 2013 and Mavericks. At least two people did not have the issue when the iMac 2013 was running Mountain Lion. This of course suggests the issue is the combination of the iMac 2013 and Mavericks.

  • Stereo captured as mono.....and now audio is no longer stereo

    Hi,
I recently came across the following problem:
I captured from tape, video and audio. The 2 audio channels were accidentally captured as mono. And so I linked them in the timeline again. Edited the show to tape (Stereo outputs), and sent the tape off.
Then I get a call from the broadcaster. The audio is not stereo. They sent me the tape back, and sure enough, it really ISN'T.
I called another editor and was told that you have to capture stereo as stereo, otherwise ....long technical explanation here..... and so I had to recapture the source material. I checked the recorder, everything set up properly as far as I could tell.
Now, can that be true? I always assumed that even if you captured stereo as mono by accident, that you could link the audio channels later on and it would be true stereo, since the left and right channels held different information.
I simply cannot (and don't want to believe) that FCP modifies audio while capturing....
Anyone know anything about this? Does it make sense? Do I make sense? Aw, hang on, don't answer the last question.....
    Cheers,
    Colin

Technically, stereo is two tracks with one track sent only to the right channel and the other track sent only to the left channel. In FCP this is termed PANNED left or right. In a mix designed for a stereo image, the placement of various elements in the sound field is done by using mono tracks and panning them differently or by using a true stereo microphone.
The only difference between capturing something dual mono or stereo is how the tracks are panned within FCP. There is no bleed from one track to the other until you export.
So, if the material was originally stereo but happened to capture them as dual mono, if you make them a 'stereo pair' (as David tells you how to do), you'll have stereo.

  • Audio captured as stereo not mono

FINAL CUT EXPRESS HD VERSION 3
I have read topics where users were complaining of the opposite. Tom Wolfe reckons audio should be captured as dual mono. However mine was captured stereo (most inconvenient as i record two seperate mics).
Another post on a slightly different topic suggested deleting the preferences files. This cured the fault.

    Thanks for your reply.
I'm sure that gets round the problem but I sometimes like to first adjust sound for the whole clip in the Viewer. Then every instance of this clip pasted in the canvas has roughly the right level and pan.
I have done some more research. This machine has both Final Cut Pro 5 and Final Cut Express 3.0 on it.
It seems if I capture in Pro (I do this because it can batch log and capture) with 2 mono tracks, then import those DV mov files into Express, they appear as having only one mixed mono track. From this point on any capturing in Express gives a stereo pair for the audio rather than 2 mono tracks. I assume this is a bug.
This is a work machine and I am trying to discover the main differences with Express and Pro so that we can give laptop users the Express (cheaper!) version. Maybe having the two apps on the one machine is causing these problems. I would have expected files created in FCP to import OK into Express, they are QuickTime files after all.
I have Express version 3.5 at work so will maybe try that next.

  • Possible to capture with separate audio input?

I'd like to move from using a tricaster to capturing live audio and video directly into premiere. I understand how to capture video, but my question is about using a different audio input for the video, rather than camera audio. i have a microphone connected to the computer through a USB XLR adapter box, and that's the mic i'd like to use for the video i'm capturing. is there any way to do this with premiere, or will i have to record that audio track separately, then bring it into premiere, sync it, etc? it would be great to be able to do this all at once.

Signal for A/V capture comes into Premiere via IEEE 1394 (Firewire),
and the audio and video are already combined.
You might be able to find a way to use the inputs on your deck or
camera for connecting your mic, and send that audio via Firewire
to Premiere along with the video, but that would be a function
    of your deck... not Premiere.
...will i have to record that audio track separately, then bring it into premiere, sync it, etc? it would be great to be able to do this all at once.
Yeah... it's not the end of the world (it's a standard practice) but,

  • Problem with audio capturing

    hi all!
i just bought a Phonic Digitrack to connect my audio devices with my macbook 13" - url: http://www.phonic.com/en/digitrack.html
it officially is compatible with mac os x and capturing from it using quicktime works.
unfortunately i cannot choose the device from the devices list in flash media live encoder allthough fmle states to support all quicktime compatible devices.
    have i done something wrong?
maybe another device will work? eg. elgato video capture: http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/Video-Capture/product1.en.html (which also supports video capture)
can somebody share experience on those two products or give any hint, why fmle won't identify the devices allthough quicktime does?
    thanks in advance!
    matthias

Are your capture settings right? In the Capture Window, there are tabs off to the upper left of the preview screen. One of them allows you to select if you want to capture only Audio, only Video, or both.
    Are both Boxes checked?

  • Why Does FCE capture DV audio as dual mono instead of stereo?

FCE captures DV audio as dual mono audio files instead of a single stereo audio file. You can see this if you "Show Movie Properties" in Quicktime. Files I captured in Premiere 6 years ago have a single stereo file. The problem is that the new dual mono format for DV won't play on the Final Cut Pro 3.04 installed on my wife's G4 (OS 10.4.11, Quicktime 7.6.2). FCP 3.04 doesn't see any audio for these dual mono files though it will play the video. It won't even create an audio waveform. But FCP 3.04 plays the older stereo audio clips captured in Premiere just fine. And if I export the dual mono files out of QT as a stereo file, then FCP 3.04 will play them just fine.
This lack of backward compatibility is quite frustrating. I can't seem to find a setting in FCE that will capture audio as a single stereo file. Why isn't NTSC DV always stereo? I guess maybe they had to go dual mono to facilitate surround sound panning in 5:1 or something. If nobody knows how to do this in FCE, I guess I'll just capture in FCP 3.04. I spent the better part of a day figuring out this hidden little tidbit. The lesson is don't try to go back!! We must always accelerate forward into newer versions and formats.

The problem is in your wife's machine. She is using a version of the OS and QuickTime that are much too new for the version of the software she's using. She really not not be using an OS newer than 10.4.10 and QT should 7.2 or earlier.
Yes. I was beginning to suspect that this was at the root cause of my issue. Thanks for the info. Frankly, my wife needs to buy a new Intel iMac so we'll both be able to work on the video I'm dumping. I had FCP 3 lying around from years ago and it's the only thing that might have worked on her old G4 AGP, so I thought I'd give it a try.

? Alright i have exhausted my search for an answer for my problems.... This is a last resort now!
    Im running Windows 7
st Problem: I was having problems with my microphone where people heard themselves through my microphone. Ok well i have a creative Fatility series headset with a supposed noise canceling mic. So last night i was like screw it imma put in the install disk for my sound card Xfi Xtreme Audio.
This Arose my 2nd Problem: Now that the drivers were installed and i finaly got a volume panel it says im running Windows Vista. The name next to my card says Sound Blast X-Fi Xtreme Audio (Vista). Alright so i am running windows 7.... What the heck! Next thing is my microphone doesnt even work! This is just awsome btw and im pretty sure the volume panel isnt even the way it was when i was on an XP system.
So if anyone has a fix to this problem let me know it would be great!

A quick update i was able to fix Problem 2, i had to get rid of what i installed so im just back to Problem . I dont have the VOlume Panel anymore but my microphone still seems to make it so that people can hear themselves....
