Audio CD not readable with network home folder, but is readable locally

When users log into a client machine with a network home folder and put in an audio CD, they get an error "Disk Insertion The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
The problem doesn't exist with data CDs, and when logging into the machine locally, the audio CD works fine.
I've tried creating new users on 2 different servers (one has 10.3.9 and the other has 10.4.6), but the problem still exists.
I've tried multiple client machines and the problem exists on all but one of them. All the clients are running 10.4.5. I tried updating one of the affected clients to 10.4.6, but no luck.
I can't figure out what the setting is on the one client machine that works so I can duplicate it for the others. I'm also confused, though, that if a disk can be read when logged in locally why it wouldn't also work over the network.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Troy,
Welcome to the forums.
Just a guess... are your network users, groups or computers managed with WorkGroup Manager?
If so take a look at the settings for user (or group or computer) under WorkGroup Manager > Preferences pane > Media Access.

  • Bluetooth audio will not connec with OS 4 upgrade, but work well with OS 3

The bluetooth with the OS 4 upgrade will not connect with my car stereo, but OS 3 worked well. The iPhone will connect with the bluetooth handsfree connect with the stereo, but not the audio. In short, I am no longer able to listen to the iPhone's iPod music, or use the navigation app through my stereo. Frustrating... I have done a soft and hard reset, as well as talk with 'Crutchfield' regarding the problem. The problem presents to be an issues with OS 4. What solutions are available?

I'm having this problem also. Bluetooth audio works fine with my motorola headset or phone "hands free" connection to my ford exployer but does not work with ipod function nor navigation app. Since this is my first iPhone, I don't know if everything worked with OS3.

  • AirPlay not working with my home wifi, but is fine at work. Suggestions?

I have a new AppleTV, fully updated with the latest updates. I also have an iPad, fully updated with the latest OS. I have done all of the required steps to login with my Apple ID, etc. Home sharing is on.
But the ATV does not detect the iPad, and the iPad does not detect the ATV. When I play a video on iPad, the airplay logo does not even appear in the control bar. The ATV does, however, connect to the wifi no problem and download direct from itunes/netflix etc.
To try it under different circumstances, I took the ATV and iPad to my office and set it up with an HDTV there. AirPlay worked flawlessly.
This leads me to believe the problem must be the wifi. In terms of internet at home, I am using a Time Warner RoadRunner internet package with a Netgear N150 wireless router.
    Any suggestions?

Not sure if this will resolve your problem but I had same problem. The airplay button would not show up on my iOS devices particularly my iPhone and I noticed the remote app was not working correctly also. For airplay and the remote app it wax a hit or miss the later being the most. The thing was my remote app usually never acted up before but than in remembered that I recently changed my router from an Apple Express to an Extreme. I had my Express set up in manual mode and I selected channel 11 manually. But when I set up the Airport Extreme I left the router in the default mode of "automatic". Upon changing the Extreme back to manual and selecting my own channel, everything has been great! So if most of you are like me and live in an Apple ecosystem and have Apple routers you may want to make sure the router is not set in automatic. I believe this to be what is causing problems.

  • Making Network home folder into a local one

I am trying to take someone's home folder that's currently on our OSX server and move it to their local machine. Reason being is that this person is always at the same computer and it's a little slower when they're using the server based folder (plus it has annoying quirks).
I thought the easiest way was to just copy the home folder from the server onto the local machine. It all seemed to work fine, however I can't seem to get it to "forget" the network home folder location. For instance, Safari still saves all downloaded files to the old network home folder instead of the local desktop.
How can I get it to forget about the old networked home folder? I tried changing the password of the server account but it still seems to be able to mount the share hosting the networked home folders.
Otherwise, can anyone suggest a better way to move a network home folder to a local machine? I'm going to do it for a couple of others soon and any suggestions would be great! I saw a great post about how to move local to network and that's what I'm going to do in that case, but the other way around seems to be elusive.
    Thanks.

Hmm, I don't quite understand. I guess my main question is, how do I erase all memory of the home folder that was based on the server for this account? Is it a matter of deleting preferences, or caches, or something else?
As I copied everything straight over it obviously remembers where the server home folder is and keeps defaulting to that desktop instead of the local one. I guess I could just delete the server home folder and that would force it to the new spot but it could cause other problems. Hmm.

  • My iPhone 4s will not connect with my home WiFi network. I have ios6 on my phone. I have updated my IMac and my MacBook Pro with iOS 10.8.2. Anyone have any suggestions? It was connecting with no problems prior to updating my two computers.

My iPhone 4s will not connect with my home WiFi network. I have ios6 on my iPhone. The connection was working perfectly before I updated my IMac and my MacBook Pro to ios 10.8.2. I have had ios6 since I purchased the phone a couple of months ago. It searches for a network and finds them, but when it asks for my password, it will not accept the password. Have never had this happen before.

  • IWorks 09 Crash under OD Network Home Folder

    Hi,
We have a Mac Pro running Lion Server and a few iMacs running Lion. We are trying to setup network home folders for our users. The server is the OD master, and each user is configured with the correct network home folder path. User can login with no problem, but the interesting thing is that when the users try to open any iWorks file (doesn't matter if it's Numbers, Pages, or Keynote), the application would hang and give out a spinning wheel of death. Same symptoms for Text Edit. I've tried my best to verify the permission, and everythign seems correct. If I login to a local user and connect to the server using that same user's credentials, I can open the exact same file with no problem. Does anyone have an idea what might've caused this?
    Thanks.

    Hi
You can't stop the creation of those files. As already mentioned this is the way it's supposed to work. You can redirect Home Folders to aid performance - assuming you're having network performance issues? If the perceived problem is more to do with storage or quotas then some obvious options are to increase quotas and/or storage space. Usually both.
    For redirecting home folders:
    http://images.apple.com/education/docs/Apple-ClientManagementWhitePaper.pdf
Honestly the creation of these files is not really a problem. Your biggest concern is going to be when users start using applications like iMovie and/or Final Cut (for Video) and/or Logic and/or GarageBand for Audio and/or the Adobe CS Suite for Graphics. Video files can get quite large depending on what is trying to be achieved. If you're trying to do this over the network it can become punishing. You may find a similar issue when it comes to Graphics. As ever YMMV.

  • Error -54 Importing to network Home folder

I posted this yesterday but I seem to have posted in iTunes for Windows by mistake, so here goes again:
Since upgrading to 10.4/iTunes 7 (I did both at the same time, now on 10.4.8/7.0.1) I'm having trouble importing to iTunes from anywhere- from files on the desktop to CDs. It doesn't matter what format (AAC/AAIF etc) I use.
When I try to import I can sometimes do one or two tracks, but most often none, before I get the message "Attemting to copy to the disk 'Home' failed. An unknown error occurred (-54)".
It seems to be a permissions issue, but copying in Finder works as normal. I am a network user but others on the same network with similar configuration have no problems.
If I choose not to copy the file into the iTunes music folder in preferences, there is no problem adding to the library. I've tried setting the location of iTunes Music to be elsewhere in my Home folder but this makes no difference.
    Thanks
    Phil

I did get this working. I had to change the hostname using the serversetup application via terminal
For anyone interested how it's done in the Terminal:
    - Go to /System/Library/ServerSetup/
    - Then type "./serversetup", and let the Usages help you out.
That seems to be the only way to change a hostname of a server. It cannot be done in Preferences > file sharing or Server Admin.
I then had to reconfigure the OD replica and reconfigure the sharepoint by disabling automount (press save) and then unsharing the folder (press save). It then has to be setup using the reverse process. Disabling automount and sharing at the same time did not work for me.
Only after this did it work. This is something Apple really didn't think about...

  • Networked home folder

    Dear readers and admin's
A friend of mine which does support a Mac Mini Server 10.6.8 in a school does have the problem, that he is able to access the networked home folder of users as long as the client system is 10.5.x or newer, but if he tries to access the very same home folders from systems with 10.3.x or 10.4.x, he is not able to login.
Unfortunately, I didn't find a clear declaration or statement that this is possible or not.
Does anyone have such a setup or can anyone give me some notes, help or tips?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Kind regards
    Thomas Thaler

    The problem is solved.
It was a dying switch. After exchange, the users where able again to access their networked home folder from 10.3/10.4 clients
    Thank you again.
    Kind regards

  • ITunes library keeps disappearing with network home directories&MacBookPro

I've been using iTunes with network home directories for years. My wife & I have network home directories on our Macs and we can log into any of our Macs with our network home directories. The actual iTunes Music folder is also on the network server and shared between our user accounts.
This has always worked fine with my G4 cube, my PowerMac G5 and my PowerBook. As long as I only open iTunes on one machine at a time, I can open it on any of my machines and everything works great.
However, with my new MacBook Pro, my library keeps disappearing and I have to reimport it from the XML file every couple of days. Seems to erase my iPod Shuffle too at the same time (maybe it's triggered by plugging in my iPod).
Any ideas? Is there an endian issue with the library?
I can't figure out how to get any feedback on what's happening. Is there a debug log file I can enable?
PowerMac G5, PowerBook, MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I've got one better...I imported all my CDs onto iTunes. Then I upgraded. Here is what happened...All songs remained listed, however when I would click onto a song, a ! mark appears in front of the check mark and a window pops up saying "song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" Well this occurred on 75% of my songs. Apple info led me to believe I could use my iPod as a hard drive. So I tried hooking up the pod to my computer. Well, from 3688 songs, I was down to just over 200, so I guess that is an even higher percentage.
What iTunes did was made a folder in "my music" with years 1955 to 2007. In those different years folders are the CDs that were released in that year. They have to be opened, each individual song, and re entered to itunes. All this I discovered on my own. No help from Apple. Not to mention what a royal pain in the *** process, which I am still in the process of doing. And don't even get me started with Artwork

  • Using Illustrator with Network home users

We have approx 300 macs all binding to an open directory server, all users log in with network home folders.
We have InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator installed locally on all machines.
InDesign and Photoshop launch fine, but Illustrator bounces in the dock for 20 seconds, then does nothing, causing the user to force quit.
I have done all the normal things, preferences, permissions, new user created etc.
A local account, (non-admin, or admin) works fine. I am NOT going to go around to 300 systems and create and manage a local account just so people can use Illustrator, that is insane, so.. what are the alternatives?
Does Illustrator have a problem with network mounted preferences? Because that is the only part I can see as affecting this.
Can you make Illustrator use a local TEMP or /tmp folder for preferences?
Do I just have to let everyone keep using Quark 8 forever? (Not likely)
    Thanks in advance.

This definitely sounds like something you might want to take up with Adobe Customer Support. (In case you didn't know, the people here are just other users, like yourself).
If your company bought 300+ licenses, I'm sure they'd be willing to help.
Will they be able to solve the problem? Well, that's a different issue altogether.

  • Syncing problem with network home folders

    Deaar Community,
I recently obtained a Mac Mini Server. I had a problem syncing my iPhone after moving all my data to network home folders.
Everytime I got the following message:
"Syncing cannot be enabled on this computer"
"Multiple computers are logged in to this same network home folder."
"Please turn off syncing on all other computers..."
There were no other computers syncing into the same directory.
This turned out to be a wrong error message.
I solved the problem by turing off the firewall on the server.
That was strange. Although the firewall rules were set to allow all traffic within the local zone iTunes had a problem with its presence.

Please be also sure that the permissions for the files are set correctly. In my case it turned out that the permissions for the iTunes Library were set in a way that the directories were owned by the server administrator's account. I had to reset the owner.
I also feel that there is a bug in the permissions administration in snow leopard server. I ended up with files that had a lot of permissions entries which were completely identical.
    i. e.
    Angela read only
    Steve read+write
    Steve read+write
    Steve read+write
    everyone none
Stll, a different error occurs randomly, but I finally managed to completely sync the iPhone. The error message now says that the iPhone could not be synced because the sync server could not sync the iphone. (?! This is somewhat redundant.)

  • Network user, network home folder, and the login keychain

I've got everything set up in WGM. I can log the user onto a workstation, and the home folder maps to the appropriate network location.
What I can't seem to do, is get a login keychain working. The keychain exists, in the proper folder on the network home folder. Keychain Assistant First Aid says everything is hunky dory. The problem is that the login keychain won't show up on the keychain list, nor can I add it. If I delete the file from the networked location and run first aid again, it says the login keychain doesn't exist and proceeds to create it, just like I'd expect. Only problem is, the keychain still doesn't show and I can't use it!
So any time I try to save email passwords, Safari passwords, etc. it errors out. Going through the prompted reset dialogs doesn't seem to do anything. I'm not seeing any console messages pointing to errors, either.
    Anybody gon any ideas?

Ok then, I got one for you. Similar sort of thing. Just created a 10.6 server, created all the relevant users within WGM, then imported the home folders from the previous 10.5 server. Ensured all new UIDs matched the UIDs from the 10.5 WGM because it then simplifies permissions - i.e. all the permissions are recognised by the new server automatically for the right users.
Now for one of my users, her login keychain is never open by default. When you start Keychain Access (she's on 10.5.8 btw) you get the System keychain and the System Roots list of certificate authorities, but no login keychain.
Have checked the permissions of her ~/Library/Keychains/ folder and they're correct, as are the permissions for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain.
Double-clicking on the login.keychain file opens it up just fine in Keychain Access, however as soon as you close KA and re-open it, the login keychain's gone again.
I've tried importing a keychain, adding an existing keychain (obviously the login one) and creating a new keychain called login, none of which work - there's no error, it just ignores me.
I'd rather not create a temporary user account, transfer all the docsuments/mail etc, delete the original and recreate a new one using the old name and copy everything back, but unless someone can help me out, that's what I'm going to have to do.
There has to be some guru's out there somewhere that can help???
    Thanks in advance,
    Matt

  • Itunes not working with Vista Home Premium 32-bit

Itumes 10.6.3 version will not work with Vista Home Premium. I have a 32-bit operating system. I'm not sure what to do next. It appears in trying to update it deleted the old itumes, as I can't find a copy of it when I search the computer.

    Then I installed Quicktime on its own - still get the same error 'Quicktime has stopped working;
Okay. That will be the source of the iTunes problem. (Without a properly working QuickTime, iTunes won't work correctly.)
Checking on things that can cause QuickTime launch errors now.
Have you at any stage installed any Codec Packs, any copies of the programs QT Alternative, QT Lite or Storm Codec, or any media converter programs that can convert files into QuickTime readable formats?
(I'm checking on these things because depending on the versions of the programs/codec-packs, these can install earlier versions of QuickTime componentry on a PC, which can interfere with the running of a higher version of QuickTime.)
