Audio clicks - clocking problem in HD

I've been editing in FCP on a G5 for a couple of years with few problems. I've just upgraded to 4 new Mac Pros with Quad cores, 8gb ram and 3 with Nvidia & 1 with ATI video boards and now I'm hearing clocking problems in my audio. Crackling sound that gets louder as the audio gets more active. I'm using a Panasonic 1400 via firewire. I've trashed prefs, changed all my wires, changed decks, all the new macs have this problem. I swapped my G5 back and the problem goes away. When I swap a Panasonic AJ-93 (SD via firewire) in the problem goes away.
The clips are clean. I can transfer clips to Protools and output clean. It seems to just be an output to DVCPRO HD issue.
I'm confused
Any thought or help will be appreciated,
Thanks Bill

I don't know where you got the idea I was using MP3s, but thanks for a response.
To clarify, I am ingesting audioand video clips from a Panasonic AJ 1400(HD deck with firewire). The files are in the DVCPRO HD codec (1080i 30p, 16bit, 48K).
Thanks

  • Strange Problem - iTunes audio clicks and pops when connected to internet

    Hello,
I have a very strange problem.
When I go to play a song in iTunes the audio clicks and pops. Not an uncommon problem I know, but here is where things seem to get strange.
I'm using iTunes on a laptop so I have a little switch which allows me to turn off my wireless adapter thus disconnecting me from the internet.
If I'm connected to the internet the audio clicks and pops but if I'm disconnected the audio plays smooth as it should.
The problem arrived out of no where i.e. no changes made to the laptop like installing drivers or programs.
I'm completely lost at what to do and after weeks of searching online I just had to ask to see if anyone here can help me.
    Thanks

Since writing this article I read that there is a problem with the airport update for tiger 10.4.11, which is exactly what I'm running. This is a pretty serious issue because I can't even listen to streaming music off the internet (via my firebox) without major clicks and pops. I wish I turned my updater of when things were stable

  • Audio Clicks, Atmosphere & Trilogy

    Greetings All,
I waited 1 year to get the Atmosphere & Trilogy GUI to display properly. Now I have relentless audio clicks in the left & right outputs at the rate of 90 clicks per minute. Only happens with Atmosphere & Trilogy. Doesn't happen with the rest of my VST instruments. Tried the same applications on a different PC laptop & it exhibits the same behaviour with the Spectrasonics plug ins so the problem doesn't appear to be machine specific. If I load Atmosphere & Trilogy into Cubase they both play perfectly without an audio glitch. The 90 audio clicks per minute in Audtion is constant. Like a metronome or internal clock triggering the audio clicks. And this is a new instance of Audition loaded & only 1 instance of Atmosphere or Trilogy loaded. No other tracks or effects loaded. Tried different latency settings. Same problem. Tried different audio interface. Same problem. Increased Audition wave cache to 132MB. Same problem. CPU is at 10 percent when clicks are occurring. I have 1.5GB RAM with loads of free memory. Pentium 4, 3GHZ HT PC. Windows XP Professional. This behaviour happens even when only holding one note down on an external keyboard controller. Anyone else having any luck with these modules in Audition? I've e-mailed Adobe & Spectrasonics support but still waiting for a reply. Any thoughts on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I get the same thing happening if the sound clips then I get some static clicks happening.....what I found is I just stop and start and stop the transport controls and that gets rid of it....until it happens again. I am not using those vsts so not sure if that will help.

  • Compressor Adding Audio "Clicking"

I have run into a very specific error that I can reproduce and would love some help solving or finding a decent workaround. Please note that I am converting 1000s of videos in "DV/DVPCRO NTSC/48Khz audio" into FLVs and the workflow I am using creates the FLVs in one pass rather than two. I much prefer this to creating a two step process where I would render our all the movies once and then re-batch them in a completely different program to create the FLVs.
    Hardware/Software
I am using FCP 5.1.2, Compressor 2.3.1, and Flash Video Exporter 2.1d494 (From Flash 8) all on an Imac Core2Duo 2.0, 4gig.
    Workflow:
All my original footage is in DV/DVPCRO NTSC/48Khz audio. From within FCP, I create a simple sequence that I export via Compressor. In Compressor, I export using Quicktime Components, and select FLV. In the FLV options I select 700kps for the the video and for audio its .mp3 (only choice) and 96 bit rate. (I have tested higher and lower bit-rates and I get the same problem).
    Problem:
When using the above workflow, the resulting FLV has loud audio "clicks" a few times a second... pops... like digital hits. Now if from FCP, I either export the sequence in its native DV/DVCPRO format and then use Quicktime to covert the file to FLV, or I export it directly from FCP using "Quicktime Conversion", there is NO clicking in the FLV file. I only get the clicking when Compressor is involved.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Doug

Here is a good tutorial for how audio works. In your case, you want to drag and drop the music track on top of one of your video clips at the frame where you want the music to begin.

    Hi,
9mbs is too high if the discs will be duplicated (as opposed to replicated). 7 would be better. Be sure to compress the audio as Dolby Digital.
Do your color correction in FCP before compression.
    Best Wishes,
    Mitch

  • Did the update fix audio clicks on export?

I'm aware of the problems with Lion and audio clicks while exporting from FCP X.  Did the update fix this problem? I want to upgrade to Lion but not if it's going to screw up the project I'm working on currently.

For me, it seems its fixed...

  • Is compressor 4 introducing audio clicks on send from FCP X

I'm cutting up some DV copies of TV shows in FCP X for a showreel. Then sending edited clips to Compressor to transcode to one of the preset formats
"SD Video Sharing" for upload to Vimeo.
Resulting  .movs have small but noticeable audio clicks. Not great for a music producer's showreel as you can imagine.
This started happening about a week after me starting the project.
I've tried rebooting, disconnecting everything, different drives, repairing perms etc
    Anyone else having similar problems?
    Thanks,
    Simon.
Macbook Pro Late 2008 2.8 Intel Core Duo, 8gig RAM, 10.6.8.

People will tell you that encoding in Compressor will give the best quality, but that assumes you are using a suitable preset and for your length of video the ready made ones are unsuitable and will waste time as they are all 2-pass with variable bit rates (VBR).
For DVDs under 70 minutes long the best quality and fastest encoding times are achieved using a constant bit rate (CBR) of around 7.5mbps.
For your short DVDs you should achieve the highest quality and fastest processing by simply exporting the project from the timeline as it is, drop it into DVDSP and set DVDSP to encode and burn it at the specs I gave above.
Returning to my opening comment, you will frequently find that the theoretically best solution to a problem results in no discernible improvement but often entails a lot more work and time-expenditure.
P.S. You might get marginally better quality by raising the bit rate to 8mbps but you run a slight risk that some old or cheap players may not be able to keep up, resulting in dropped frames.

  • Hdmi audio clicks

    Hi,
Im using my sony flatscreen as a display for watching movies. Im running the signal with a hdmi after the mini display to hdmi adapter to my denon avr-1912 receiver. When watching movies the audio clicks for a millisecond every 30 seconds. Very annoying! Ive just downgraded from lion, since i fond it buggy and annoying, to snowleopard. Before i downgraded i had the problem, but it was due to me not using the arc out from the tv. After i switched i didnt have the problem. I think the click is a result of the receiver acting as a repeater and the signal gets cut somewhere along the line. If someone can help me, i will be VERY grateful!

Eliminate the receiver to determine if it is the culprit.  Connect the hdmi directly to the tv bypassing the receiver.  No clicks?  Then it is the receiver.
Another idea, lower the volume of the playback and increase the volume on the receiver.  Maybe the audio is being clipped because the input signal is too high.

  • Persistent Audio Clicks Since Upgrading to Quicktime 7.3

    Hi all,
Ever since i upgraded my Quicktime from 7.1.6 to 7.3 i am plagued with an audio click every time i launch any file with audio on Mac OSX.
    1) Every time i launch a Quicktime movie, the audio makes a distorted click.
    2) Everytime i play a tune in iTunes i get an audio click.
    3) When watching a DVD i get a click everytime i change menu.
This is so annoying and i can't stop it, ive gone from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10 and now i'm on 10.4.11. Apparently an audio fix for 10.4.10 was supposed to sort the problem but it hasn't. The problem is best replicated when launching a video or song that starts from silent.
    Can anybody help
    Cheers

Why do you think iPhoto affects your ability to edit Mail sigs? What happens when you try to run a slideshow? Have you tried re-applying the .7.3 update? Repairing permissions?

  • Annoying audio clicks when using N73 music player

  • Audio clicks where clips join.

With Premiere pro version 1.0, CS3 and now CS6 I get audio clicks where clips join when an effect is added. The click is still there when the sequence is exported.  I shoot XDCAM EX and the camera will split a long recording into 2GB parts. Where these parts join in a sequence, it will playback over the join OK. But if I add an audio effect, such as lowpass, highpass or dynamics to BOTH clips, then when I playback there is a very noticeable click. The same thing happens if I razor a clip (to remove a section) and join the gap back up. However I can fix this with an audio crossfade transition of a few frames in length. I can’t use this trick, when the join is between clips where the camera reached the 2GB limit and has split the clip as there is no overlapping media. Is there a solution to this?
You can test this yourself using Premiere’s bars & tone clip and razor a clip into two.
    Bye Andrew

I have always copied the entire card file / folder structure to the hard drive.
Upon investigating the import options, I think I now see where the problem is. I am using a JVC GY-HM700E camcorder. This is stated to record XDCAM EX in MP4 or .MOV files. I have been using mov files. CS6 won’t combine the individual parts into one clip in the project panel. If I switch to MP4 files, CS6 will import all parts as one file. But the sequence shows a yellow render bar above all the clips. The mov files do not have any render bar over them. That’s why I used mov files rather than MP4 files. Before anyone suggests that the sequence I have used does match the MP4 files, I deliberately set up a wrong sequence, dragged a MP4 file to it, Premiere prompted that the sequence settings were wrong and I let it set the correct sequence settings. The MP4 files still have a yellow render bar over them.
    The Adobe PDF that I looked at;
    http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/premiere/cs6/pdfs/adobe-premiere-pro-cs 6-jvcprohd.pdf
    for info on XDCAM workflows refers to newer models of JVC cameras. The .MOV file / folder structure seems to be different from the 700 camera as this extract tells me;
“The Media Browser makes finding ProHD content simple. ProHD records high-definition and
standard-definition video as MPEG-2 in the ready-to-edit MOV or MP4 file formats. Audio is
recorded using uncompressed linear pulse-code modulation (PCM). ProHD packages video and
audio in different file wrappers and folder structures, with metadata and media stored across
several files. Video and audio are combined into MXF files in a Clip folder. Each shot is stored as an
MOV file that’s placed in its own subfolder along with several metadata files. The individual shot
subfolders are grouped within a CLPR folder that resides within a BPAV folder.”
On the 700 camera all the mov files are in a single folder and some different folder names are used. In MP4 mode, individual files are in their own folders, which is why premiere correctly recognises spanned files.
I guess the answer is to use MP4 files, so long as the yellow render bar does not cause problems.

  • Audio clicks when playback is stopped.

In the process of recording a couple of bass guitars that were Keymapped into sampler instruments, I noticed some strange audio behavior. While playing the new sampler instruments, finger lift off from my MIDI guitar controller was causing a clicking or sucking sound each and every time. (The recorded notes in Logic were allowed to decay naturally and the samples were not looped.)
So I went to the recording in Logic and sure enough, hitting the space bar or numerical decimal would elicit a click when stopping playback. A quick test recording was completed in Digital Performer with the same result. Also a quick test in Logic with the smallest and largest i/O settings. Same problem.
Recording signal into the Mac via Built-in Line input also produces the same clicking. So that removes suspicion for my interface (828mkll with Black Lion mod) which has been a rock-solid performer.
I have 5 GB of Ram. OSX10.5.5, 7200 RPM sata drives, etc.
Is this some sort of core audio issue?
    What to do???

Ok, I recorded each bass chromatically into Logic in real time (not triggering samples via MIDI).
The resulting audio files were opened in Keymap to be converted to an EXS24 sampler instruments.
The lift off clicking noise occurs with both basses but not with factory sampler instruments I play with the Godin LGX-SA.
The point about the spacebar or numerical pad decimal point is that when I use either of these to stop/start playback of the original audio file in Logic, clicking occurs. Uninterrupted audio playback is fine. Interrupted playback causes clicking which should not occur. While attempting to problem solve the funny lift off noise while playing the sampler instruments, I noticed that interrupting playback of the original recording in Logic caused clicking.
I recorded the same bass guitars into DP (not MIDI-triggered samples) through the same interface with the same clicking problem when audio file playback is stopped via the spacebar or DP keyboard commands.
So there are no MIDI messages involved here. The point of mentioning the sampler instruments is just that that was the when I noticed the audio problem. For simplicity sake, if we leave sampler instruments out of the discussion, I am still left with some sort of audio problem.
The same basses played and recorded via Built-in Line input causes the same clicking to occur during interrupted played back.
Somehow. the noise that occurs with finger release from the fretboard is related to the problem with the audio clicking when stopped during playback. Meaning that the audio file is corrupt in some way.
I followed your suggestion of unchecking both play tickboxes in the Sound Effects tab of the Sound preference. The problem still exits.
So in summary, at this time, I cannot record audio into my Mac without some sort of clicking problem when stopping playback. Audio that I record then causes some strange lift off noise or click when played as a sampler instrument. The base problem is that something goes wrong when audio is recorded into my Mac.

  • Audio clicks

Since upgrading to 10.6.8 I experience 'clicks' on the optical digital audio output.
The output is set to 48Khz in the Audio Midi setup utility.
There are 2 clicks when opening a file, and one click when closing the file.
If a 44.1 Khz file is opened the 2 clicks appear when pressing play, when closing the file 1 click appears.
If a 48Khz file is opened, the 2 clicks appear when the file is opening, and the 1 click appears when the file is closed.
It seems that the Mac is switching between sample rates - I did not hear this on 10.6.7.
Anyone else have this problem and found a way to clear it?

    Further testing resulted in this:
    1. Rather than trashing the prefs, I first decided to connect the deck (Sony DSR-40P) to my other iMac and captured the clip through the quicktime player. This would first illuminate other drivers or apps used. The audio still clicked.
    2. Then I connected my other camera (Sony DSR-250P) which I am able to use as a camera/deck and PRESTO.....!!!! no audio clicks in the capture.
So from what I gather, it has something to do with my SONY DSR-40P videocassette recorder. I tried other tapes and they were fine. Just this one tape...!
So no solution as yet but for the time been, I'll just re-capture this job using my 250P and be done with it

  • I need to upgrade my 10.5.1 os on my G4/1.25 (I'm having some audio-midi setup problems), but it's a machine that is not connected to the internet.  Do I have any options?  Thanks!

    Friends,
I'm having some audio-midi setup problems on my G4/1.25/10.5.1 machine.  I'm thinking that a routine OS upgrade might help.  However, this machine is not connected to the internet.  Are there any alternate methods for upgrading system software?  Thanks in advance!

OK, what you should do is download the updates on another machine and burn them to a disc.  Start at this link http://support.apple.com/downloads/#leopard for downloads and find, among other things, the 10.5.8 combo updater that works on PPC machines, plus security, QuickTime and other updates.  Going from 10.5.1 to 10.5.8, there will probably be a bunch of things that you should install.  Being off the internet with the machine, you can't have Software Update sort it out, so something might get missed, unfortunately.
My suggestion is this: if it looks like you might need a download, get it onto that disc.

  • 'Source play' and 'audio-video sync' problems with PE8 on fast WIN7 64 bit computer

I am transferring Hi8 videos, about 2 hours long, to my WIN7 64 bit computer with PE8.  [Dell Mobile Precision M4400 Computer Workstation (Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 500GB/4GB); NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M, 512MB] I seem to have several problems:
First, after importing the file (.avi), I get a message about ‘dropped frames.’
Secondly, when I try to play the video in the source monitor, the audio plays but the video doesn’t; it only shows the first frame [this is after waiting until the video is ?recognized? ]   I can use the shift-arrow key and see that the video is there.
Thirdly, I can play the .avi file in other players, e.g., avidemux or PE pro CS5 on another computer.  There, I see that the audio and video are not in sync; the audio can be up to 300 ms ahead of the video (as determined using avidemux).
    Questions:
    1.  Why doesn’t the source monitor play the video? Is this a problem with PE8 (latest update as of 3 March 2011) on aWIN7 64 bit computer (intel duo core. 3 GHz).
    2. Is the audio-video sync problem the result of the ‘dropped frames?’ How can PE8 correct this? Avoid this? Or, is it coincidence?

"I think you're telling me you're using a backwards compatible Digital8  camcorder to capture your video as DV-AVIs. Is that right?" YES
"Are you using  Premiere Elements to do this capturing?" YES, AS ABOVE PE8
"Go to the File menu and select Properties. It should show a standard DV codec being used for your video and audio."
WMP v12 is dumb. Under properties, media, it says 'video.'  However, avidemux gave me the information state above: video -- Codec 4CC: dvsd, frame rate: 29.971 fps; audio -- codec: PCM, channels: Stereo, frequency: 48 kHz.
    So, back to the Questions:
