Audio control no longer pops up when speakers are plugged in - NB200 w/ Windows XP SP3

Previously, when I plugged speakers or headphones into the jack on my laptop, a control would pop up asking me to select headphone or line out (amongst other things). There was also a check box to prevent the window from popping up again. I checked it, and now I'm stuck with line out. The laptop's internal speaker doesn't shut off no matter what I plug in. That's a problem if I want to use headphones.
Does anyone know how to access those controls? I can't find them anywhere, and it's not referenced in the manual from Toshiba.
I have a Toshiba NB200 running Windows XP SP3.

Solved!
Go to Solution.

Ian, I will describe for you how to do that on my Win 7 machine.  It may or may not be the same for your XP machine.  Go to Control Panel/Realtek HD Audio Manager/look in upper right corner for a very small yellow folder icon. Click that and you will be able to check a box for "Enable pop-up dialog when device has been plugged in".
I hope it works for you.

It is possible that the screen is too high and that the scroll bar and the find bar and add-on bar fall off at the bottom.
If that works then close Firefox (File > Exit/Quit) to save that setting.

I also tried resetting settings all to no avail ...I looked up some advice and watched utube video advice on how to fix without success..

The Retrospect you used way back when is no longer around. The company was sold and that company produced a new version of Retrospect - Retrospect 8.x
So, as you've been told, you would have to be running a Tiger system with an old version of Retrospect software (5.x or 6.x - you would need to know) assuming you can find the software.
As best I can remember you cannot extract files from a Retrospect backup except using the software since Retrospect did not normally make a file by file backup rather it created an archive of the files in the backup. I'm assuming that the EMC/Retrospect people have told you that old Retrospect backups are not accessible by Retrospect 8.x?

You need to use file:// as the protocol instead of C:/. The latter may never work (C:\ might).
Where is the main HTML located ?
Easiest if to store the images in a sub folder of the location because you can't go back via ../ beyond that root location for security reasons.

  • No sound is coming through my headphones when they are plugged in

For some reason, sound is no longer coming out of my headphones when they are plugged into my laptop. I have had my laptop for 3 years and never had this problem with this computer or any computer. When the headphones are plugged in, the sound comes through the speakers in the computer but not through the headphones. Its really frustrating and I would love some help figuring out what is going on.

What generation Nano do you have?  I assume a 5G Nano, since you are referring to sound output through the iPod's external speaker.  If that is the case, first make sure your headphones are plugged all the way, meaning the white part of the headset is flush with the body of the Nano.
Also try to reset the device by pressing and holding both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

My ipod 5th gen won't let me adjust volume when headphones are plugged in, but when they are not I can adjust the volume on the speaker.  How do I fix this?

Try a hard reset of the Nano. To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
I assume you have double checked to make sure you are plugging the headset all the way in meaning the white part of the headset is flush with the body of the Nano?

  • IPod nano 6th gen (brand new) doesn't recognize when headphones are plugged in

I have a brand new iPod nano (6th gen), and it doesn't detect when headphones are plugged in. I have read that the problem can ocurr because the headphones are not correctly inserted (which is not the case.. i'm absolutely sure about this) or that the headphone jack has dust inside (which is also not the case, since it is brand new).
    This is what happens:
When i play a song, and then press the sleep/wake button to turn off the display, the music stops. Or if i let the music play, it stops when the screen times out and turns off. These two things occur because the ipod "thinks" that there are no headphones inserted.
When i try to activate the FM radio, the radio won't start because it says that there is no radio signal (which occurs when no headphones are connected).
Needless to say, the microphone and volume controls of the iphone headset, don´t work at all (they even work on the ipod shuffle!).. and because of this, no voice recording for me!
It's a shame, because the FM radio is completely useless, and music playing only works by activating the "double click to play" option in the settings menu.. but it is somewhat cumbersome the process of "play music - turn off the screen - double click to resume playing" every time I select a song.
The headphone detection has only worked randomly when the ipod is connected to the computer, but i haven't been able to figure out under what conditions this occurs. I have read about this issue, and I only would like to know if this is a firmware bug of the 1.2 version. I tried unsuccesfully to downgrade the firmware to the 1.1 version (maybe because the ipod shipped with the 1.2 version).
I have also restored the device in itunes, with no luck.....
Thanks in advance for any useful answer!

    Thanks for your answer...
The headphones that i'm using, are the ones that were included with the iphone 4 (so, they are original).. however this shouldn't be a problem, as the ipod should work fine with whatever headphones i choose to use (sound quality will vary, of course).
The ipod does the same with the headphones that were included in the box, and with every pair of headphones i have used to test, so i'm certain that the ipod has an issue.
I hope that the picture is clear enough.. here you can see that the headphones are fully inserted, and the ipod is not recognizing them.

  • My ipod thinks speakers are plugged in

I've had my ipod for close to a year now, and today is the first time this problem has happened. When I plug my ipod touch (4th generation) into the speakers (you use the part you charge the ipod to plug into the speakers), my ipod starts using its external speakers instead, and when I unplug the internal speakers, my ipod acts as if the internal speakers are plugged in. exerything on my computer has been updated and such, and I just updated my ipod, too, but this problem is still occuring. Weirdly though, I plugged my ipod into my computer, and now my earphones can work when I plug them in. I also tried to reset my ipod by turning it off for a while, but it turns right back on by itself afterwards. what's happening, and how can I get this to stop?

You headphone jack is defective and needs to be replaced.

  • Sound does'nt shut down when earphones are plugged in. Ipad Mini.

Sound doesn't shut down when earphones are plugged in. Same earphones used with other ipad or iphone give no problem.

might be a hardware issue with the headphone jack. Try cleaning it with a dry soft toothbrush to remove lint and dust.
    If that doesn't help:
Try doing a hard reset for the iPad: Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't solve the issue, you could also try backing up the device and restoring the device as new.
In that case, follow the steps in: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.
If you get specific error messages/codes in iTunes when updating/restoring, check this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
If you're not able to restore the device, this one might help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
Using that last article will erase everything on the device, so make sure you have a backup!

  • Volume control not working when speakers/headphones plugged in.

When my external speakers or headphones are plugged into the back of my iMac, the volume control won't work. A "no sound" icon appears and the volume slider will not move. When I unplug speakers or headphones everything goes back to normal. All updates are current. My "Audio MIDI Setup" says, "Audio Output....Output Not Supported." Repairing disc permissions was run too. Any ideas?

    Hi Paul
    *First off:*
Open System Preferences > Sound and select the Output tab. Now plug in your external speakers or headphones, do you see the Device Name change from Internal Speakers to Headphones?
    *If nothing:*
Then try another Account, preferably your Admin. Account if your logged into another.
    *Still nothing:*
Check the settings in other third party Audio programs you may have installed?
    *If still nothing:*
    Reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
+(as per the instructions at the bottom of the article)+
    and
    Zap the Pram > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
*Then if you still get nothing:*
Take it in for service and have it checked for a hardware problem.

  • When external speakers are plugged in to headphone jack, sound randomly goes back to internal speakers or digital audio setting, then back again

I have an essentially new MacBook Pro with Lion and all updates applied, and am wondering if this is a hardware or software problem.  Essentially with something plugged into the headphone jack, things work as they are supposed to for a while, then the sound will switch back to internal speakers, or sometimes 'digital out' (I can watch it change in the system settings), and then often switch back.  It doesn't seem to follow any sort of pattern or be related to any specific application that could be open, and happens with different sources of audio (iTunes, streaming from the web), and different external speakers or headphones plugged in.

Sounds hardware related. If it's brand new, and you're still under warranty I would have it checked out.
I have not experienced this on my computer.
As I understand it, you have analog RCA outputs from an 1/8" to left and right RCA outputs. when you're randomly using the computer, it'll switch to internal speakers, then to digital audio, back to your stereo analog external speakers.
This should not be happening and if it's happening with streaming content (I am unaware of anything that streams in 5.1 digital audio) then this must be something that an apple specialist should look at and consider.
Does this happen with the headphone jack out? when you hold your finger over the headphone jack area does a red beam come out of it *blinking* or just on? This will be a good indicator that your audio hardware is faulty. are you running HDMI out?

  • Indesign CS5.5 audio control creating a new page when exporting to epub.

I am trying to publish an ebook with embeded audio and when I export to epub the audio contol appears on a seperate page.  Any ideas how to keep this from happening?  I have tried articles and anchored objects.

How are you creating the Audio control? Is it set for play on Page Load?
What audio format are you using? The best format is MP3.
I've played with video (MP4) in EPUB on a iOS device but haven't done audio. If the audio isn't working, you might make an MP4 movie without an image (sound only) which would give you a controller.

  • Speakers only play when headphones are plugged in.

My internal speakers only play when the headphones are plugged in. (System preferences-Sound tells me I'm using Internal Speakers, audio port for sound input).  When I remove the headphones, the red light in the jack goes on and the computer says I'm using Digital Out ("The selected device has no output controls.)
I have read many community responses, most saying that the switch inside the headphone jack hasn't engaged, that I should fiddle with it using a paperclip/bobbypin/toothpick or just plug-in and unplug headphones repeatedly.  I have repeatedly both of these to no avail.  When fiddling, I don't really know which bump inside there is the switch, I've played with them all.
No, it's not dirty, I've blowin air, vaccuumed, dusted. Same problem.
I do use my speakers often for work and pleasure, go between different external speakers and a projector.
It seems that the computer has things backwards- headphones unplugged is pluged and vice versa.
Any suggestions or clear guidance as to what I should be fiddling with when I stick a bobby pin in there?  No need to refer me to old posts, I've read them.
    Thanks in advance,
    TheKip

If your phone is still under warranty, Apple will service your phone for free.
Did you check the headphone port for any kind of debris or lint?
Did you already try another set of headphones? Are you suing the headphones that came with the phone?
Is the headphone jack plugged in fully into the headphone port?

  • ITunes No Longer Launches Automatically When My iPhone Plugs In

So as the subject line says, my iPhone no longer starts iTunes when it is automatically plugged in. It just stopped doing this after I talked to AppleCare to get my MobileMe working (my computer is old so it uses .Mac but it wouldn't load successfully so AppleCare changed some preferences around). Anyway, now when I plug my iPhone in, iPhoto launches but in order to get my phone to perform a backup, I have to manually open iTunes when before both iTunes and iPhoto launched automatically.
Anybody know how I can get it back to launching automatically when I plug my phone in to the computer?

Like the poster "Sig", I have this problem as well.
I checked the Login Items in the preferences and the radio button was checked. So, that's not the case. Nor was I using any iPhone utility either.
Now, I tried all alternate USB ports on my Mac Pro and I also tried plugging into my iMac 20' 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo. My iPhone is not recognized on either. I think it's something specific to iPhone v3.01 and 3.1 software. Because, I've not upgraded my iMac's iTunes yet. So, I think we can either rule out it being iTunes' fault. That or this iTunesHelper needs is broken... if that is the case.
So, do we have some better solutions to this problem?
PS: Oh, and yes, I did update iTunes to v9.0.1 on my Mac Pro. Still no response.

  • IPhone letters don't pop up when keys are pressed

You know how the letters pop up from under your finger when keys a pressed on the keyboard to let you know which key you press, well sometimes certain letters on my keyboard stop popping up. A restart fixes the key but a few minutes or hours (intermittent) later a different letter stops working. Anybody else have this problem?

The problem seems to be related to the Auto-correct and Auto-capitalization feature. If I turn either one off (Settings->General->Keyboard), I don't have the problem but when both are on, it comes back. It also seems to affect the first character that I type in the input field.
With both Auto features on, if I go to the login page of Twitter and type, say, a 'v' as the first character of the Username, a capital V is entered and the "V" pops up, but if I backspace, tap shift to go to lowercase and tap v again, the v does not pop up from the keyboard but it does show up in the username input field. I can reset things if I tap the Done button on the keyboard then tap in the username field to bring the keyboard back up. The problem is still there, but I can see it happen with a new letter if I want.
Try it and post what you find. You don't have to have a Twitter account to see it happen and I'd be interested to know if it's consistent.
