Audio "crackles" after extended uptime

Hi all,
I've had a problem with my iMac (mid-2011 model [gestalt ID of iMac12,2]) basically ever since I got it... I suspect the problem is in software, not hardware, but I can't reproduce it on my MacBook Pro (mid-2010 model) running the same OS and same applications.
Specifically, the audio begins to "crackle" after extended uptime (typically around 20 days).  This would only be mildly annoying except that after about a day or two of this, coreaudiod begins to take up 100% cpu and I get periodic mini-freezes of the entire system (mouse hang, clock hang, etc.) every time a sound tries to play.  Each freeze takes maybe 2 seconds but it obviously gets really annoying, really quickly.
A reboot always fixes the problem, but it would be great to avoid having to do this.  Both the iMac and the MBP are running the same OS (10.6.8, build 10K549), so the only thing I can guess is that this is related to a specific kernel extension that is active on the iMac but not on the MBP, since only the iMac has this problem.
One curiosity is that this seems to be a problem only when outputting via the internal speakers... if I connect headphones, I don't notice the problem (at least not in my limited testing).  Not sure if a different kext handles output to headphones versus internal speakers, but if so, that could again be an indicator of the problem.  (The Sound prefpane in System Preferences certainly knows the difference between headphones and internal speakers...)
Extensive Googling has led to zero results...
Does anyone have experience with this issue and/or know of a good solution, besides upgrading to 10.7/10.8?  (For institutional reasons, I prefer not to upgrade at this time, if it can be avoided.)
Thanks in advance.

I take back the "curiosity" paragraph... today, the same stuttering/crackling is coming through the headphones, too.  Looks like it's not limited to just the internal speakers.
This is quite maddening.   I hope that someone might have an answer (besides just rebooting).
Thanks!

  • Start up error and beats audio crackling after realtech driver update

    I am having several issues.
If I plug in a external hard drive, the OS will not start and goes to "press esc for start up menu" in lower left corner on a black screen. I press esc and it goes to boot options.  I have done what HP states and hard started my computer twice and it did not help, and I have found no other suggestion to try and fix this. I have tried everything, including a system recovery and it still goes to the start up menu options.  If I disconnect the external, it will still appear, but the operating system will start up after a few seconds.  Why do I have to disconnect my external to start OS.  And for some reason, my external has been seated in the hardrive section of my computer, instead of the removable storage devices in my computer.
Also, after updating realtech driver, my beats audio speakers pops and cracks. I tried to roll back driver, but no changes. Please help. I dont want to go thru the trouble of sending my computer back for repair. This is really upsetting!!!!  I cannot play any videos or music, because of the crackling.  Why did it do that, and is it fixable.  My laptop has not been jarred or dropped in any manner to have caused any damage.  It started after the driver update, and even tho I rolled back the driver, it still does this.

    Hi @rbuckner35 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 17t-f000  Notebook and issues with Beats Audio and startup issues. The startup looks at the USB as one of your Boot options. So it can not load anything until it know that this is not a boot device.
You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings which could resolve the issue with the sound.
Here is a fix that has helped others.
    1. Right click the Speaker icon in the bottom right corner by your time.
    2. Click Playback Devices.
    3. Click Speakers.
    4. Click properties.
    5. Click the advanced tab on the Properties window.
    6. Change the Default Format drop-down to the highest quality.
    7. Apply the properties.
    8. Click OK to close the properties window.
    I hope this helps.
    Thanks.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
Click the “Kudos, Thumbs Up" on the bottom to say “Thanks” for helping!

  • Why do my exports in FCP X have audio 'crackle' after i upgraded to Mountain Lion? (this happened on two different macs)

Upgraded both my MBP Retina 15" and iMac 27" to Mountain Lion.. and on both, my FCP X (verion .4) has crackle sounds when i export the clips and play them back..
    weird.
anyone else notice this? how do i resolve this?
    Thanks

Could be a few things. Let's start with the specs of the audio files.

  • Empty logfiles on 10.4.11 Server after extended uptime

I am running about a dozen Xserves in a production environment with very strict change control. The Xserves are running Tiger Server. Recently while monitoring a server's performance I tailed the SMTP log and found it empty. I then checked the system.log and it too was empty. syslog was running and showed that it has been running for 261 days (same as the overall server uptime). I performed a kill -1 on the syslog process and syslog restarted but still nothing in any of the system logs. I surveyed the rest of my servers and there was one other server with an uptime of 261 days (the next highest uptime was 94 days). This server happened to be a web server. I checked the system logs in /var/log and found the same issue (logs were empty). All of the logs in the other machines were filling up happily. All of the compressed logs were also empty which leads me to believe that the logging stopped at least 10 days ago. Other than this the system seems to be functioning normally although it is sort of hard to determine without logfiles to look at. I rebooted the mail server and it recovered normally and also started logging normally.
I have googled for this issue and haven't found any relevant information except for folks who have misconfigured syslog.
I can always reboot the servers to recover from this but I would prefer not to reboot my servers regularly. Hopefully an uptime of 261 days is not unusual or unexpected.
Anyone have any experience with this issue or recommendations?

Seems as though I have answered my own question. Here is the crux of the issue:
While walking through the process tree I discovered two "tail -f " processes from 2 months ago. These processes were presumably either orphaned or zombified from a very old ssh session. In my excitement I sent them a kill -1 before I investigated where they came from and presto, syslogd started writing to all of its logs. So there you have it. For me a simple ps aux | grep tail solved it.
    Good luck with yours.

  • Audio crackles on export

    Hello,
For a couple spots in my timeline I have to two audio tracks (of the same song/lyrics, but recorded on different nights) layered on top of eachother.
I have no issues with it in FCP7, sounds great.
On export however, the audio crackles in the spots where the audio tracks are "doubled up". I'm not sure why this is happening, because when viewed/listened to in the timeline, all sounds good.
My video is ProRes (converted from AVCHD) 1920x1080 60i. Square pixels. Sequence matches the video settings.
Audio is 16 bit stereo, @ 48.0 KHz
Anyone know what might be causing this crackle after export (same settings)?
    Thanks

Check your levels when you play this part, are they in the red? If so your audio is too loud... bring down the volume.... Unfortunately (or fortunately) FCP doesn't crackle when your audio are too hot...

  • Bluetooth speakers crackling after upgrade

After upgrading to Yosemite 10.10 my Bluetooth audio connection quailty is terrible when using my computer. I'm connected to my iBox twist speakers which worked perfectly on Mavericks. Now if I use my computer, type this message, browse the web, and specifically using mail (literally every key press while in mail causes a jump in the audio) makes the audio crackle and jump. If I leave the computer alone its fine.. Any ideas what I can do?
Apple Bluetooth Software Version: 4.3.0f10 14890

I'd agree with you cept I'm using a iMac mid 2012 which runs bluetooth 4.0 and the only way to keep things in sync is to constantly trash my systems cache every 2 hours and even then its not enough time depending on what applications I run.

  • Windows 8.1 MSI GTX 780 Audio Crackle & Pop

    Hi Guys,
Pulling my hair out with this one and I really need some help.
My HDMI Audio out to TV has worked great but more often than not I get Audio crackling and popping sounds.
Its more apparent when I launch big picture mode in steam it opens with horrid crackling sounds, if I use my USB headset its fine.
    I have done the following so far;
Disabled onboard Audio in the bios - No difference
Enable XMP1 memory profile - Thought it had resolved this at first but then the issue was back within a few days
Enabled high performance in power settings - no difference
reinstalled all drivers - no difference
did a full reinstall of Windows 8.1 and removed other devices and the same issue occurred.
I would also like to add the TV is fine, speakers are ok and I have tried a new HDMI cable and other devices which don't crackle.
Scan computers have offered to RMA the card but I don't think this issue is the card the games, graphics, all function really well and I am hoping to not have to RMA the card I have come here to ask for help because I am now at my wits end trying to fix this.
My motherboard BIOS is also fully up to date
    Gigabyte Z97M-DSH3 Bios F5
    i5 4460
    Ballistix 8GB Ram
    Nothing is overclocked

Had the same problem after installing 8.1 a long time ago. Rolled back to 8 still had the same problem. Just ignored it for like a year since it only happened after my PC was on for a while and then I could just log out and back in and it would fix itself for like 8 hours. Down the road I reinstalled windows from scratch after getting a new PSU (mine was getting up there) and it was gone. I think it had something to do with some drivers or something getting messed up while moving to win 8.1. On 8.1 now and have no issues.

  • Audio crackle/pop with new MacBook Pro under Vista

I just got a brand new MacBook Pro (multi-touch, Penryn cpu) and have used Boot Camp to install Windows Vista on it. Vista installed fine, and then I used the Restore DVDs that came with my MBP to install the drivers. The Device Manager shows that everything is installed.
All is not well, however. Whenever sound is being output, there are random crackles or pops - sometimes there will only be one every 5 minutes or so, sometimes there are 10 of them right in a row. The only clue I can find is that the Problem Reports And Solutions application in Vista says that there is a "Compatibility issue between Intel 82801GBM (ICH7-M) LPC Interface Controller - 27B9 and Windows Vista." There is no solution offered. I don't know if this problem is directly related to the audio problems, but it seems likely.
Has anyone else encountered this? Any way to fix this and stop the audio crackles?

Well after a week and a half of testing and being unsatisfied with choppy audio on my MBP I believe I may have found the answer. The cause lies in the audio API within Vista; there is a specific service (Multimedia Class Scheduler) that adjusts the priority of multimedia applications according to resources available and one of the factors that affects the prioritization is network usage.
I tried pretty much every Broadcom driver available from HP and Dell to no avail; some reduced the frequency of the pops and crackles but none of them removed it completely.
I believe the solution lies within several registry keys that control the Multimedia Class Scheduler service. Open up regedit and modify the following keys:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile
Set NetworkThrottlingIndex and SystemResponsiveness to 10 each (decimal)
    and
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile\Tasks\Audio
    Set SchedulingPriority to High.
After changing these 2 keys I couldn't here any audible stutter regardless of whichever driver I used. I am currently using v1.96 for the Realtek and 4.170.77.3 for the Broadcom.

  • IE crashes after extended use of plug-in

    Hi all:
After moving to v1.4.2 I've noticed that IE will throw an exception after extended use of the plug-in. By extended use I mean we navigate to applet pages and cycle through over and over (which by the way is part of the normal use of our web site).
Our web site makes use of four different applets, one of which is a larger graphical applet that makes use of a large amount of memory. IE seems to consistely crash upon initialization of this larger applet (after repeated cycles) but not exclusively so. If we cycle between the three other applets without going to the larger one, IE will eventually crash, it just takes longer to do so. This leads me to think that memory is an issue here. Could there be a memory leak in 1.4.2?
We've been able to reproduce this IE exception consistently on a Windows 2000 platform running IE v6.0.2800.1106 and with java plug-in versions 1.4.2, 1.4.2_02, and 1.4.2_03. IE crashes even faster when we do this test on Windows Me.
I know there's got to be others of you out there that have seen this problem. Have any of you found good workarounds for this? Staying on version 1.4.1_06 is not possible for us because of the "zip file is closed" exception that is always thrown when you have caching turned on and you call Crypt.getInstance. Sun's workaround for this only works the first two times you use the applet in the browser session. The third or fourth time it always seems to produce the exception.
I know this isn't a lot of information but any help would be greatly appreciated.
The IE exception log is below.

  • Unable to Load Page after extending a controller

    Hi
I am working in controller extension. Now the issue which I am facing is while doing the controller extension.
While doing the extension I have mistakenly entered the wrong path for the custom package which will have the controller extension class.
Now after extending the main CO, when I am trying to load the page it is giving me an OA error. My intenstion was to personalize the page and instruct the controller extension to substitute the main controller.
Since I am not able to load the page, unable to configure the controller extension through page personalization. The page is not getting loaded and not allowing me to proceed further.
Please help me to resolve this issue. How can I get back to my original state of the page with the main controller.

another easy way to correct the mistakes in personalization.
    1. using xmlExporter export the personalization..
    2. correct the controller name in the xml file..
    3. import the personalization using xmlImporter..

  • Lost audio files after saving.

I lost my audio files after saving in Logic X and now my project file has the extension .logicx on it and my audio files are nowhere to be seen. I made some changes to the project, moved the file to another folder, then they asked if I wanted to replace the other file with the new and I said yes not thinking that it would matter. Is there any way that my audio files are still out there somewhere? And no I don't have time machine hooked up.
    Thanks.

if you replaced that file.. then you have lost it's contents as they have all been replaced with the one you copied over... and as you have no backups you cannot, as they say.. un-scramble the egg...
Finally start making backups as soon as possible...
    As the old saying goes...

What model laptop is this? Does the issue occur when you use headphones? If you could give me some more details I will be able to give you some more suggestions to resolve the issue.

  • Audio distorted after Lumia 800 vibrates while tak...

If I'm recording a video and an SMS or other notification comes in that causes the phone to vibrate, the rest of the audio recorded after the vibration will sound extremely distorted/broken. Is this a known issue with all Lumia 800s or do I have a faulty device? Not sure if this is a hardware problem and if the phone needs to be returned or a case of waiting for a software update...

As this is the first post I've seen regarding this issue, I couldn't say, however you could call your nearest care centre and check, or if you're worried get it in the post asap. If it were a common problem it would nornally have caused a number of posts regarding the issue, also has the issue occurred on more than one occasion ?

  • Video audio stops after like 20/30 sec

    Hey,
I got videos on my ipod video 60 gb I'm sure they work fine because they worked fine when I just put them on.
But after a while when I installed the new software the audio stops after 20/30 sec. It likes freezes for half a second and the audio stops. When I forward the video or rewind the audio works again. Does anyone has the same problem? Or does anyone know how to fix this email me plz [email protected]

If you have the latest software installed (version 1.1), then you may find that rolling back to the previous version helps. There are hundreds of posts here on the forum like yours. Here's one for you to read.

  • Exporting layers of audio from After Effects  cs6 to Premiere / or Audition? Is this possible?

exporting layers of audio from After Effects  cs6 to Premiere / or Audition? Is this possible?
Help - I have an After effects project with multiple layered files and want to copy these to Premiere / Audition. For example I know if you select multiple video files from After Effects these can be pasted straight into Premiere intact - but this does not work with audio. I want to take existing layered audio files from After Effects to Audition / or Premiere but can't copy and paste - is there a simple solution for this?

Hi thanks Dave for responding - yes that could work as a 'workaround' -  I was hoping there would be a way I can keep the existing independent audio layers and corresponding audio levels from After Effects- in the same way I can copy and paste video files from After Effects to Premiere - rather than exporting a flattened AIFF /WAV from After Effects.
This would then allow me a lot more control working on the final edit - especially as currently a lot of the audio layers overlap. It does seem there is no simple solution for this, so  otherwise I can do what you suggest - and 'stagger all the audio files' in sequence so they do not overlap on the timeline and then when I import the flattened exported AIFF file into Audition/ Premeire / I then can cut it up again and recreate the overlaps. Was hoping there might be a simple copy + paste method or other 'export method' but I guess this is simply not possible. It would save me about 7 hours of work, but not the end of the world I guess
One final point - some of the audio clips are .mp3s but the majority are WAVS, hopefully this should not create any issues on the export.
thanks again for your help, if you or anyone has any other solution pls let me know
    Best
    Alex
