Audio crackling/video lagging

hi everyone,
i'm on a macbook pro that runs snow leopard and in the last couple of days have been having trouble with web video and audio.
sound is crackly and video often slows to a crawl.
it doesn't seem to make a difference as to which browser i use - chrome, safari or firefox - they're all equally bad.
itunes and downloads aren't affected - only audio/video that's being streamed.
any software updates haven't helped so far. i don't think the issue lies with flash player, either.
any solutions, geniuses?

  • Crackling, stuttering, lagging audio

I was messing with some audio settings the other day, basically trying to make things louder. Now as I'm trying to play back through iTunes, I'm getting intermittent portions of crackling and stuttering audio. Audio through everything else seems to be fine including Youtube. I went back to iTunes and unchecked "Sound Enhancement" but I'm still getting the same problem. I'm sure it's a simple fix but I think I've tried everything else. Thanks for the help and recommendations!

  • When watching fox news clips the video lags the audio as time progresses

I use firefox as my browser. While on Foxnews I watch their news video's and as time progresses through the video clip, the video lags the audio. It gets worse and worse over time. This happens on msnbc etc.

You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:
*disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
*disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
*disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

  • Audio and video out of sync on converted AVI file

I am trying to convert a DVD to an AVI for playback on a device. When I import the DVD and publish it as an .AVI the output audio and video are out of sync. After about an hour of playback the audio lags the video by a full second. How can I correct this problem?

If you have Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 8 and you want to rip VOBs from the DVD-VIDEO to export subsequently to DV AVI, here are the details....
    1. Do you have DVD-VIDEO standard or widescreen? Set the Premiere Elements 12 project preset manually.
File Menu/New/Project. Set the project preset to NTSC or PAL DV Standard or NTSC or PAL DV Widescreen depending on what you have.
Before you exit the new project dialog, make sure that you have a check mark next to Force Selected Project Setting on this Project.
    2. In the Premiere Elements workspace, use Add Media/DVD camera or computer drive/Video Importer to get the VOBs (only the ones in the series VTS_01_1.VOB. Set to a folder in the Save In: location. Check mark next to Insert in Timeline. Hit Get Media.
    3. If you have an orange line OVER the Timeline content, press the Enter key to get the best possible preview of what you have on that Timeline.
If after all that, the audio is out of sync, then use the Command Prompt method to get the individual VOBs into a single file with all the VOBs seamlessly merged. This worked nicely for a recent user here. See details in my blog post how to for the Command Prompt way.

Please do not hesitate to ask if you need clarification on anything that I have written.
Depending on your results, more information may be requested about the specific properties of what you have on that DVD disc.
    Thank you.

  • Audio and video not synchronized in recording made with Lync 2013

There appears to be no forum for the Lync 2013 client yet, so I am posting this in the Lync 2013 server forum.
Environment: Lync 2013 Server and Lync 2013 32-bit client. Only one Lync pool. Conference call was scheduled using "Lync Meeting" in Outlook about a week before the call. Call recorded on a laptop that was plugged into our LAN with an Ethernet
    cable.
Problem: User scheduled a conference call with screen sharing (PowerPoint) and recorded the call. The audio and video are not synchronized in the recording. There is several minutes' delay, with the audio lagging behind the PowerPoint. The last slide
on the call was presented, the call ended, and the presenter ended the recording (I was present for all this and can confirm no user error in these steps); however, in the recording, the slides change before the speaker talks about it, and the last
couple of minutes are cut off.
Any ideas on why this happened? Web research has failed me. Thank you.

You may need to lower the recording quality as your PC might not be able to keep up the pace.
Go to Options in Lync client -> Recording -> Select 480p
    Then test again

My audio and video are not syncing properly. There is a lag from the audio to the video.  Does anyone have a permanent fix for Photo Booth where the Audio and Video are not syncing properly?

If you monitor the "More Like This" box (top right), other threads appear. Opening them usually displays other threads. You aren't the only one having this problem.
One person having a Photo Booth problem, although not the same one as you are having solved it by running Disk Utility/Repair Permissions.

  • Crackling Video???

I'm need to burn around 20 DVD's for some people by Sunday-- but I'm having a big problem. The movie, which is in high-definition (I don't know if that makes a difference) fits on the DVD, but in random parts, the video breaks up into colored/patterned/pixelated squares and the audio "crackles". It doesn't show up on the computer, and I'm assuming that it's a problem with the DVD burning process.
Does anyone know why this is happening or how I can fix it?
    Thanks!
    PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Step One (unless the project requires a DL disc).
Create a disk image of your completed project on your hard drive (in the menu bar File>Create Disk Image). Play the disk image with Apple's DVD Play application to make sure it works the way you want it to.
Step Two. Use Apple's Disk Utility (in in the Applications>Utilities folder) to burn the image to writable media. Read Burning a disk image file on a CD or DVD in Mac OS X at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
What this article doesn't tell you is how to reduce the burn speed (and that's what we want to do here) with Disk Utility. When you hit the Burn button (after selecting the disk image), you should see a menu that near the top says something like: 'Burn disk in' - to the Right of this line you should see a Blue triangle pointing to the Left. Click on it so it points Down and you should see several burn speed options depending on your disc and your burner.
You want to make your burns at low burn speeds on high quality media for maximum playback compatability because higher burn speeds create more burn errors which set-top DVD players can't handle. I try to use 2x or 4x max.
I know you have 20 discs to burn and are probably in a hurry, but slow and steady is the best approach. Better 20 GOOD disc slowly than 20 BAD discs fast.
BTW, some people have reported 'heat-up' problems with their burner systems and have found that waiting 5 minutes or so between burns to let the burner cool down improves disc quality.

  • Audio Crackles & Pops in disk burned by iDVD

I videotape using my Sony HDV camera (1080i), and import directly into iMovie06 HD. From what I've read on these forums, that is the best way to keep the full quality HD video. I edit my movie and close iMovie. Then I open iDVD, choose a theme, and drag that movie in. I don't add any other transitions, etc. Then I choose "Best Quality," and burn the DVD. When I play it in my Panasonic Blue Ray DVD player the audio crackles and pops--it's terrible. What happened? What can I do to fix this so that the audio quality is as good as it sounds on the HD videotape or on the Mac.

Hmmm. Crashing isn't good, but no harm to try again with Pro.
iDVD's Preview isn't always accurate, but do you hear anything there?
Burning errors wouldn't typically present themselves as crackles/pops, but high quality discs are recommended (Verbatim DVD-R discs are often suggested; I like Sony as well) as well as breaking down the burning process into two steps:
    1) from iDVD, create a virtual DVD by using Save As Disc Image. Test this by mounting the disc image and using Apple's normal DVD Player to play it on your Mac (try just double-clicking the image file).
    2) If it plays correctly, Copy the disc image to an actual DVD using Roxio Toast or Apple's Disk Utility.
It's good to have a substantial amount of hard disc space available (10-25 gigs) and I typically quit from other applications so iDVD can have max resources available.
All the audio work in iDVD is behind the scenes and there aren't any special audio controls.

Right now I am using the blink effect.  I wasn’t sure if it was just that effect so I tried the emboss effect and a blur effect and the video seemed to lag when I used them as well.  When I export the video the blink effect runs smoothly, but its hard to tell if I got the video how I want it when it lags in the preview window.

  • ITunes video lagging horribly

I've been having this problem for awhile now: Whenever I try and play a video in iTunes - be it movie, TV show, music video, or video podcast - the video lags. The audio often works just fine, but the video is choppy, as if I'm watching a slideshow or a series of pictures rather than a video. Video works fine on the internet, and in the majority of my video players, it does as well. Please note that I am only trying to play iTunes bought videos in iTunes - the videos have not been tampered with in any way, so there should not be a problem there.
I am using a Windows XP Pentium 4 CPU, 1.50GHz. I have 512 MB of RAM on the computer. It is not a new computer by any means, but it is also not terribly old. I have had this problem with several other videos in unrelated video players, but that is due to a codec issue that refuses to be solved. Besides that, other videos work fine. It is only iTunes videos that are not playing.
Someone please help me figure out what's doing this or how I can fix it. Or if I can fix it, if it comes down to that, because this is getting seriously annoying.

Just updated iTunes to most recent version. Now I'm getting jerky video playback in BOTH iTunes and QT Pro (latest version). CPU use is very high but random; ditto with video playback (i.e., doesn't hang up on the same scene/time).
I had this issue a little over a year ago after updating iTunes to the then latest version. Got nowhere with Apple's "Service" texts. I played around with configs for a while and also re-installed iTunes. It has worked fine until yesterday (same symptoms as last time). As for the past "fix": nothing I can hang a hat on. Methinks Apple updated the version I re-installed with (tho' the version # was unchanged).

  • Audio and Video Performance Tweaking

Hey guys I'm back with more questions.  I'm trying to improve the overall quality of my video conference experience.   My target market is the elderly and their families, so not necessarly people who are used to computers and tweaking things so we want to make it as good as we can right out of the box.
    Video
1.)  All of my decoded video has clearly visible blocks.  I've attached a sample screen shot to show what I mean.  Is there a deblocking filter option I'm missing somewhere?
2.)  The encoder in flash player 10.x is still H.263 based right?  I'm not missing a secret option to use the H.264 encoder am I?
    Audio
1.)  I've set my audio codec to speex in my audio publisher, and it looks like it defaults to a quality setting of 10 (<rtc:AudioPublisher id="audioPub" codec="{SoundCodec.SPEEX}"/>).  Am I missing any tweaks to improve the audio quality?
Audio questions where I assume the answer is no but I ask anyway
2.)  Does the LCCS code or flash player prioritize audio packets over video packets or are they just sent when they're available.  I'd like to sacrafice video for audio if it's possible.
3.)  Is there a way to better syncronize the video and audio streams.  Right now there's a lot of lag between what is said and how the lips move (this is even with peer to peer on the same private network).   I get the idea that there isn't but I thought I'd ask.
4.)  Is there anything I can monitor to give me an idea of the current connection performance?   In otherwords can I monitor something and then make my own decicions to reduce the video quality or audio quality based on avaiable bandwidth between the two connected peers?
5.)  You secretely have echo cancellation built in but were waiting till now to tell me right?  Just kidding.
    Thanks as usual
    -Eric

    Hironmay,
Thank you for getting back to me, I know I asked a lot in one post there.   It would be nice to have a way for audio packets to be prioritized over video since they need to get there but  you can live with dropped video frames.   I'd love to see a way to sync the audio and video up as well.  I was just reading about some research where they showed if you can watch someones mouth move while you hear them talk it's equivelant to a 20dB volume increase (referrning to how well the person can understand you.)   I have elderly users so something like that is very important to me.
I agree with you that when I changed the captureAndHeightFactor that the blocks got smaller, but did not go away.  I was hoping there was a way to smooth out the edges of the blocks so the boundries don't look so harsh.   I had been looking at flash.media.video in the flex 3.4 language reference and it talks about deblocking.  I copied the relevent text from the documentaiton at the end of this message.  I was wondering if there was something there I could use.   I'll play around with it some more.
Believe me I've been very vocal about the need for echo cancellation on the Flash Forums
    Thanks for the help,
    Eric
    relevent text from flash.media.video
    deblocking
    property
deblocking:intIndicates the type of filter applied to decoded video as part of post-processing.      The default value is 0, which lets the video compressor apply a deblocking filter as needed.
Compression of video can result in undesired artifacts. You can use the       deblocking property to set filters that reduce blocking and,      for video compressed using the On2 codec, ringing.
Blocking refers to visible imperfections between the boundaries      of the blocks that compose each video frame. Ringing refers to distorted      edges around elements within a video image.
Two deblocking filters are available: one in the Sorenson codec and one in the On2 VP6 codec.      In addition, a deringing filter is available when you use the On2 VP6 codec.       To set a filter, use one of the following values:
0—Lets the video compressor apply the deblocking filter as needed.
1—Does not use a deblocking filter.
    2—Uses the Sorenson deblocking filter.
3—For On2 video only, uses the On2 deblocking filter but no deringing filter.
4—For On2 video only, uses the On2 deblocking and deringing filter.
    5—For On2 video only, uses the On2 deblocking and a higher-performance      On2 deringing filter.
If a value greater than 2 is selected for video when you are using      the Sorenson codec, the Sorenson decoder defaults to 2.
Using a deblocking filter has an effect on overall playback performance, and it is usually      not necessary for high-bandwidth video. If a user's system is not powerful enough,       the user may experience difficulties playing back video with a deblocking filter enabled.

  • Audio crackles on export

    Hello,
For a couple spots in my timeline I have to two audio tracks (of the same song/lyrics, but recorded on different nights) layered on top of eachother.
I have no issues with it in FCP7, sounds great.
On export however, the audio crackles in the spots where the audio tracks are "doubled up". I'm not sure why this is happening, because when viewed/listened to in the timeline, all sounds good.
My video is ProRes (converted from AVCHD) 1920x1080 60i. Square pixels. Sequence matches the video settings.
Audio is 16 bit stereo, @ 48.0 KHz
Anyone know what might be causing this crackle after export (same settings)?
    Thanks

Check your levels when you play this part, are they in the red? If so your audio is too loud... bring down the volume.... Unfortunately (or fortunately) FCP doesn't crackle when your audio are too hot...
