Audio disappears in Streamclip conversion to iMovie08

I have been using MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2 to convert a .MPG movie clip to a .AVI, so that it can be read into iMovie 08. The problem I'm having is that the audio disappears. Is there an explanation for this, and a work-around? Thanks.

I have a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T70 digital camera. It uses MPEG VX Fine Movies: 640x480 w/ audio at 30fps.
Sony MPEG VX is a form of multiplexed MPEG-1 content. Multiplexed MPEG-1 video content is "playback only" as far as QT applications are concerned. This means the content cannot be edited or converted by the QT structure without assistance. Doing so in QT Pro, GarageBand, iMovie HD, etc. will result in the loss of the audio content. This is normal and is why you should use a third-party, MPEG-based conversion application for your conversions. MPEG Streamclip (free), iSquint/PunyVid (free), Visual Hub/Film Redux ($$/free), FFmpegX (donation-ware), etc. would all work. My preference is MPEG Streamclip because it allows you to select any of the above listed audio/video iMovie '08 compatible compression formats, as well as, FCP installed codecs if available. Previously you said that your MPEG Streamclip conversions also lost their audio content and was why I wanted to know more about your work flow in that application.
I have called Mac support (twice) and per their advice, I upgraded to QuickView Pro and also purchased MPEG-2 playback to help with the file conversion.
I assume you are referring to QT Pro ($30) here and the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20). Neither of these applications are required for the conversion of MPEG VX/MPEG-1 files to DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264 compression formats using MPEG Streamclip but I wholeheartedly recommend having both on hand as you gain more experience in the use of each. MPEG Streamclip basically performs many of the same tasks as QT Pro but is able to handle multiplexed content which QT Pro can't handle while QT Pro allows you to layer audio and video content which MPEG Streamclip can't do. And, if you ever need to convert multiplexed/elementary stream MPEG-2 content in either QT Pro or MPEG Streamclip, then you will need the QT MPEG-2 PLayback Component which you already have. In short, while you may currently feel that you have wasted your investment, with time and experience, you will find these applications to be very powerful and complementary to one another.
What information do I need to provide to you to help me answer my question?
If you are unable to convert your Sony CyberShot files to DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, and/or H.264 using MPEG Streamclip, then I would need to know the specific work flow used for your attempted conversion.
I'm desperately trying to create a "movie" for my daughter's first birthday (March 8th) of video clips from her first year to show at her party!!!
Once you have made a successful conversion using MPEG Streamclip, and decide which codec you plan to use, you can then proceed to the use of the MPEG Streamclip's batch processor which will allow you to load all of the files you want to convert at one time and set it to convert (and not join) all of the files automatically and unattended.

  • Audio disappears when I reverse a video in iMovie 11?

Hello.  I was reversing and mirroring videos today with no problems.  Then when I went to reverse another video, the video reversed fine, but the video's audio disappeared.  The audio plays perfectly fine when the video isn't reversed, so I'm not sure what the problem could be.  Like I said, I reversed other videos with no problems, so I know I'm doing it correctly.  I'm just wondering if there's a way to fix this.  Thanks.

    The iMovie forum is here
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie
That's where the knowledgeable ones on that issue hang out. Be sure to include the version of iMovie that you're using too.

  • Audio disappears in iMovie '11 --why oh why?

working on a movie for days and days.
movie is about 20 minutes long.
it's got a lot of transitions & slow motion speeds.
i waste a great deal of time with the audio.
on most of the clips, i use the audio from within the clip.
i additionally add some audio that was detached from the source/Events footage.
i added a voiceover and suddenly all the audio disappeared.
it still shows up visibly in the Project. -- the purple bars beneath the clips, and the show audio within the clips themselves. i can see the peaks and valleys.
i can see that it's there in the little audio monitor that's visible on the screen below the Project editing. when i play back the Project, it shows green/yellow/red bars as the audio "plays" somewhere inside iMovie's little world. but it won't let me hear that audio.
the sound is still *there* somewhere.
i've tried exporting / Sharing in Quicktime, media browser, and to iDVD, but the sound doesn't show up. all the tracks are soundless.
i have, of course, looked at the audio edit inspector on a sampling of the clips, and nothing is wrong in there. the volume is up to an appropriate level, ducking isn't clicked, etc.
i'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.8, a desktop iMac Intel duo, and the like.
due to my new experiences with a zillion *other* buggy behaviors in iMovie in the last few weeks, i have already: trashed the preferences, reinstalled iMovie, manually moved my project files out of the "iMovie Projects" folder and i only drag one back in when i am actively working on it (so iMovie doesn't try to have all the movies in memory at once... yes, this is a real thing! look it up. i couldn't believe it.), run disk first aid, backed everything up, exported using every possible setting i can find and basically executed every maneuver you can find on Apple Support and about 5 other websites. i have probably tried everything except flinging the entire thing out the window, which is on my list.
    any help would be appreciated.

i think it is just a bug, like so many other behaviors in this application. (someone in another thread suggested they just left this iMovie version to be horrible, didn't bother addressing any of our concerns even when discussed here, because they want us all to buy FinalCut!) i think i had to start over. :-(

  • All audio disappears - but with arguments!

    Yeah, exactly that.
I'm playing a tune and all of a sudden all the audio disappears, no error messages, no nuthin! All I get is the fader meter in my external mixer at full blast but no sound!
But if I stop the tune I can play audio from any instrument track fine, but when I press play I get no sound.
There is a problem here somewhere.
It happens after about 30 minutes of firing up Logic and sorts itself out when I restart Logic.
Thing is, I'm using the optical out from my G5 which handles all the audio, no soundcard except for the internal Apple one, and the question is:
Is it up to the job?

Ok, over here, some plugs which require high CPU will do this at smaller buffers. It can be triggered more easily if demand is high. It looks like everything is working but... no sound. Then bypass the plug or remove it and the sound returns... very weird.

  • Audio disappears half way through slideshow

Made a DVD with 11 slideshows (~1000 images total) spread over 3 menus. All slideshows were built in iDVD 5.0.1 using a media browser (from iPhoto). Travel 1 theme. No transitions. All slideshows set to loop. For audio, added a different single track to each slideshow. Used "Save as Image" option and then checked the resulting disk image in Apple DVD Player.
What happens: audio gets cut off (and never comes back) some way into a slideshow. For some slideshows it is close to 5 min. from the beginning, yet for other this happens only 2.5 min. after the slideshow starts.
What I tried: encoding settings "best performance" or "best quality"; reverting to QuickTime 7.0.1 from 7.0.3. This did not make any difference.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

Just a sad update. After extensive testing I did not find any solution to the problem. What I tested:
    1. 10.4.3 or 10.4.2 (archive and install from 10.4.3) or 10.3.9 (fresh install).
    2. QuickTime 7.0.1 or 7.0.3.
    3. iTunes 4.9 or 5.0.1 or 6.0.
    4. Different audio tracks for the slideshow in which audio disappears half-way.
    5. Different formats of audio tracks - AIFF or AAC.
    6. Tried increasing the length of the track to make it much longer than the length of the slideshow. I did this in GarageBand by creating 5 tracks using the same AAC file and then exporting the result back to iTunes.
    7. iDVD encoding settings "Best Quality" or "Best Performance".
    8. Creating PAL or NTSC DVD disk.
THE RESULT: The same as before. For some slideshows audio disappears during transition from slide 32 to 33, for others - from 51 to 52, yet for others - from slide 70 to 71.
What is odd: Redoing the DVD project in the same software setup gives different results - fewer or more slideshows may be affected than before. Therefore, the success rate is random and unpredictable.
WHAT I DID FIND: Out of 7 slideshows (of the total 11) that had problems with sound (during all my futile attempts) 6 contained images that were recently added to iPhoto - since the last time I was able to successfully make a perfect slideshow DVD (this was back in mid-August).
MY GUESS: This problem relates to the length of the DVD. If I make two DVDs under the same software setup, one with 11 slideshows, another with just 5, then the second will have only 1 or 2 slideshows with disappearing sound, while the first one may have up to 7.
For me this is a dead end. And I'll be waiting for iLife'06.

  • Audio disappears mid-project

I've created a project using Final Cut Express. I use FCE to create a QuickTime movie of the project. I import the QuickTime movie into iDVD, and use iDVD's "Picture in Picture" theme to create the DVD. I've been creating disc images of the project for several months during the development process, and everything has been working okay until last week. Now, the audio disappears about 50 minutes into the disc image. The audio is there in FCE, it's there in Quicktime, and it's there in iDVD using its dvd player/simulator. I have about 30G of free disk space when I start to create the QuickTime movie, and have about 14G free after the QuickTime movie is created. The disc image is 4G, and I end up with about 14 G of free space after the image is created. The audio disappears mid scene ... not at an audio edit point.
I rebuilt the iDVD project from scratch yesterday (at least I think I did), and the result is the same.
Any suggestions on what to check / do?

I too am having this same problem. Created a 45 minute video from FCE, exported it as a Quicktime movie, created the DVD project and have had no luck creating a workable DVD using iDVD. When I burn a disc, the audio cuts out for the rest of the disc at a random location. Never in the same place twice. I was able to play the FCE project with no problems, the quicktime movie and from the DVD previewer. I was able to create a disc image using iDVD with no problems. After researching and talking to MAC experts, they recommended that I first get some high quality discs. I was using Memorex before and was told that that had the most problems. I am now using Sony DVD+R discs and still having the same problems.

  • I've tried 2 different screen capture devices, and in both cases, audio stops recording after 20 or 30 seconds, but video is fine.  The audio disappears

I've tried 2 different screen capture devices, and in both cases, audio stops recording after 20 or 30 seconds, but video is fine.  The audio disappears with both programs.  Does anyone know what is happening with my audio capture?

Update, I took the webcam home over the weekend and tried on my home network and the outcome was the same video fine - audio delayed, is this a Skype for desktop issue?

  • Audio disappears completely

I have had problems with all audio disappearing when running VLC. Today, I was listening to iTunes and started VLC, which killed all the audio. The error message from VLC is "audio-device var does not exist. Device probe failed."
If I try to open the sound system preference, sound preferences crash. If I try iTunes, it gives no error message, but the progress bar does not move and nothing happens. The audio output is connected to an audio amplifier by optical cable. Rebooting fixes the problem.
Does anyone have an idea if this could be a hardware problem?

Many thanks, DaddyPaycheck. No, I had not seen it. I assume I will need to reboot for it to take effect, but, since I can't do that right now, I'll have to wait and hope that it works. Thanks again.

  • Audio disappears on sharing

On copying (sharing) my project to a DVD ,halfway through the film, there is a high frequency noise at then the audio disappears and the video stops. I can get the film going again, but the audio is gone for the remainder. This is not the case when I play it off on Final Cut Pro X. Any suggestions?

Could be a quirky phase cancellation audio thing in the Export from FCP X.
    This OP has an example.

I'd check through the audio settings in FCP X and try another export when you are happy.

  • Audio disappears during Facetime calls

I frequently talk to a friend using Facetime, but occasionally my friend's audio disappears. When that happens, our only recourse is to switch to Skype. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be? My friend's Mac is a fairly recent iMac running Lion 10.7.5. My iMac is running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
    Thanks!

    Dear Apple,
I have been a loyal customer since 1991. I have enjoyed nearly every product. I love - LOVE Facetime.
But the audio dropout problem STINKS. PLEASE FIX IT.
Seriously, there should be an easy software fix to prevent the auto-volume control from dropping one party's sound so low that it is inaudible. You can do SIRI for crying out loud, surely you can FIX THIS.
    Thank you!

  • Audio disappears when I use preloader

I have a movie that has an audio track (I have it set to "start" for the Sync). It works perfectly, but when I insert a preloader with it, the audio disappears. The rest of the movie still works fine (visual) but it is silent.  Couldn't find exactly this problem in a thread. Any ideas?

if you're using actionscript to instantiate your sound, use:
    var yoursound:Sound = new Sound(this);
if you're using the timeline to instantiate your sound, make sure it's not set to export for use with actionscript.

  • Audio disappears part way through avi file

I have imported an avi file into a new CC project.
    Video stream:
    Codec: DV Video (dvsd)
    Resolution: 720x576
    Frame Rate: 25
    Decoded format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV
    Audio Stream
    Codec: PCM S16 LE (araw)
    Channels: Stereo
    Sample rate: 48000 Hz
    Bits per sample: 16
PC is running Windows 8.1 and is running CC 7.2.2 (33)
The file itself runs for 43 minutes and is 5.4 Gb in size
When editing the file 25 minutes in the audio disappears completely and is gone for the rest of the clip.
I have checked the file in VLC and the audio is present throughout the file.
I used Avidemux 2.6 to split off from the main file about 10 minutes of data where there was no audio within Premiere.
I imported that new file into Premiere and the audio is present in the new file.
I can therefore use that but don't know what is wrong with the original file.

Any suggestions of where to start?
    Thanks

    Thank you for the information.
I have read the source patching article and watched the video too.  Very interesting and an impressive function.
I did also look at the Audio Conforming link a lot of which I didn't understand; I think though I did try what was suggested regarding XMP stuff although it did not make any difference with the file I had the issue with.
My problem is that the audio just stops part way through the clip.
I have reduxed into a new file all the audio/video from the original file from just before the audio disappeared and that seems to work OK.  Perhaps there is an issue with my original file.
It doesn't help that I have a brand new PC and this is the very first video I have edited in Premiere CC as I had previously been using CS4 and even then I haven't used that for a while.
Anyway, thank you for your help and I will see how I get on.

  • Audio disappeared - registry issue

Presario a450y (D7222M) Realtek AC'97 built-into motherboard ASUS P4SD-LA-PES.  Moved computer between rooms.  Audio disappeared upon restart.  Have spent hours with HP online support (chat, email) to no avail.  Code 19 in Realtek properties, Device Manager shows exclamation point.  Have tried website step-by-step instructions.  Didn't work.  Tried HP Application Recovery.  Didn't work.  Have downloaded and installed drivers six times.  Didn't work.  Support sent me a hotfix - was able to download and unzip the fix, but I don't know how to install it.  Exasperated, I gave-up and bought a sound card to bypass Realtek.  Installed the sound card - and - SAME THING.  Obviously a system issue, not a driver issue.  Anybody know how to actually fix this?

Well, it must have been an onboard driver issue, 'cause it took a System Recovery to get the audio back.  I had traded emails with HP Support for almost two weeks, and nothing that they suggested worked, until the System Recovery.  Unfortunately, now the computer has a bunch of new issues, making me wish that I had replaced this one rather than trying to fix it (the computer is six years old).
After the System Recovery, I downloaded SP2 and SP3, then tried to access Norton Ghost to recover all of my files and programs.  Nope!  .NET Framework issue.  But I know that the file is there.  Neither will my HP C5280 printer install - I get the Fatal Error at 96%.  At least I was able to get my Internet connection back, although I can't get to my personal browser due to the Norton thing.  Pretty frustrating.
Lesson learned:  if you've got an older system that starts to have problems (mine lost the audio, CD drive, and scanning function all at once), replace it instead of going through the hassle of fixing it.  Oh, yeah - and don't get onboard audio or video - get separate cards.

  • Background audio disappears when an interaction slide appears

I have a (Captivate 6 produced) project which includes approx 40 slides and it looks to be running smoothly when published.
However, I have imported a background music audio track which I want to play (and then loop) during the course of the whole course - however, whenever it reaches a slide which has an interaction on it, the music disappears and then returns when a non-interaction-based slide is reached.  Disappears again when the next slide is reached that contains an interaction, etc.
I am unable to test in earlier versions of Captivate and so I am wondering whether this is an issue with this version of the program i.e. background audio disappears when an interaction slide is shown?

We don't have the 6.1 update yet, but I did find a workaround for this (although it's not perfect).  With Captivate 6 there is now a "Play Audio" action that you can assign to the Slide Properties "On Enter" action.  When I did this, the narration continues to play even after the Flash interaction appears in the timeline.  So for any narrated slides that have Flash interactions, you need to:
    1) remove the Audio narration that is imported to the Slide (Audio > Remove > Slide from the menu bar)
    2) On the Slide Properties - On Enter action, select Play Audio, then select the appropriate narration file for that slide.
This seemed to work -- the only problem is that if you use the "Play/Pause" button in the Adobe playback navigation bar, the button seems to get confused and changes to the Play state while the audio is still playing (instead of staying in the Pause state until the audio finishes as it does when the audio is imported to the Slide itself as narration).  Not sure how to fix that issue except to remove the Pause/Play button from the playbar and just use the Next/Back buttons.  And if you use navigation buttons instead of the Adobe playbar, you don't need to worry about this.
    Hope this helps!
