Audio doesn't play

I'm having a problem where clips in the preview window will not play audio, particularly for long clips.  Often if I start at the beginning of a clip, I can hear the audio all the way through.  When I mark and in and the sounds stops, I can't hear audio from the in point and I have to back up several minutes into the clip to get my audio back.  Makes Final Cut basically unusable.

The problem seems to come from having audio (imported from a field recorder that rolled before the camera) at the beginning of a synchronized clip that starts before the video.  It seems that the audio preview will only work for as long as the length of the actual video (starting from the beginning of the synchronized clip rather than the first frame of video).  Since the video (which came from a Canon 5D mk ii, transcoded and proxied) starts later than the audio, scrubbing ceases to function past it's length, even if there is more video and audio.  So if the audio recorder rolled for 30 seconds before the camera, the synchronized clip has 30 seconds of sound without video at the beginning and the clip will scrub fine until it hits 30 seconds before the end of the actual video.  On the show I'm working on, the audio rolled non-stop during the interviews while the camera had to restart every 12 minutes due to the nature of the camera.  I'm testing to se if trimming the audio prior to synchronizing the sound makes a difference.  It would be handy if there was a way to trim out the unused audio at the beginning of the synchronized clip after it's already been synchronized, but I haven't figured out a way to do it.
