Audio Dropout During Playback

As I'm playing clips, whether on the timeline, or in the preview window, the audio will cut out for intervals of about 2 seconds then come back, then off again.
This has happened to me on two different systems with two different projects. One you could say is slightly under powered (2.8 Ghz P4 with 2 GB of RAM, GForce 6600GT) but the other is a workhorse machine (Two Dual Core Xeon 3.0 Ghz processors. 4 GB RAM, GForce 8800). Both machines are running XP. The lesser system is my personal machine running Premiere Pro 2.0, while the workhorse is my work computer running CS3. Both are having the same issues.
Some details about the event:
1. This only happens when I'm working with HDV footage.
2. This only happens when playing files that do not have to be rendered. Like playing clips back in the Source window, or on the timeline where there are no effects applied (there is no red bar above it.)
To remedy this for some projects I have put a blank title on the top track of the entire project. I think that this forces it to play it back in a way that it's not raw and has to do some small amount of processing on it. It still plays back fairly smoothly, but not like when it's raw and working correctly.
3. If I just put focus on another application for a second then come back it will play fine for about a minute before it starts cutting out again.
Any ideas or suggestions as this is incredibly annoying. The only thing that I thought it might have something to do with is that they both have Cineform isntalled (which is what I export to when I'm done.) but I doubt that would cause this error.

Disk setup is different for each computer. For my work computer working off a SATA drive with only the video content (program and OS is on a separate SATA drive).
On my home computer, sometimes working off a second IDE drive, but sometimes working off a USB2 external HD.
When I first encountered the problem, it was on my home computer working with a USB 2.0 HD (also my first using HDV in PPro), so I thought disk transfer speed may have been the problem. But not long after, I encountered the same problem at work while working off of regular hard drives (well defragmented ones at that.)

  • Audio dropouts in playback of songs taken from CDs to iPod

When I import music from a CD to iTunes, then update my iPod with the music, there are occasional 2 to 8 second droupouts in the iPod playback -- just dead air as the track continues to play.
This seems to only happen with burned CD's and "homemade" mixes (as opposed to store-bought CD's, etc.). It doesn't happen with songs purchased through the music store either.
I've tried deleting the songs from the library and the iPod, then re-imported the CD and then updating the iPod, but the droupouts continue (though they might then occur on different tracks or at different points within a track). There's no apparent rhyme or reason ... it doesn't happen on every track, the dropout intervals vary, and they occur at different points during the track (sometimes near the beginning, other times in the middle or near the end of the song).
    Can anyone help?

I've never really heard of this. Have you played the "Problem" songs in iTUnes and played the CD you imported in a stereo to see if theres drop outs on them?
What format are you importing in? Have you tried updating and/or restoring the iPOd with the latest iPod updater (Version 03-23-2006)?

  • Audio Stutter during playback, ONLY in Soundtrack Pro

Just today when I opened an aiff file exported from a Final Cut project, I noticed that playing back this file in Soundtrack produced a stutter for almost every second, like a metronome. Scrubbing the playhead along the audio waveform would give me about a 1/2 second of audio but then go silent until I let go of the mouse button and grabbed the arrow again to scrub.
The more effects I put into the project, the worse the stutter becomes, but still in the same time (like I said before, like a metronome). It just becomes more pronounced. If I export from soundtrack, the audio is fine. Playing the AIFF file before and after in quicktime, the audio sounds fine.
I've since tried different file types, from MOV to MP3 and each file has the same outcome, so it's definitely something wrong with Soundtrack.
I've tried trashing the preferences, but that didn't help either. I've never run into this problem before and couldn't find any related issues in a google search. If anyone has ever experienced this before, please help. I've used this computer for over a year with no problems and it was used for a couple years before I started using it, also with no problems.

    Woo Hoo!!!
Thanks, Tim for the post. I have a G5 Quad 2.5 GHz and I got the same STP stuttering when I upgraded to Leopard. Playback was stuttery. If I exported to AIFF, the output file played back smooth, which was fine until I tried to export a non-aiff file. AAC and MP3 files ALL have the same stuttery audio as the STP source - I discovered this yesterday creating my first podcast.
So, now if becomes an issues. Searching for "Stutter" found your post. Reading the kenstone article cleared things up. Since I import audio from MiniDisc via optical, I already had a cable attached to the input. So, I attached the other end to the output and... like magic, perfect playback.
    Heavy sigh of relief!!
    Thank you immensely!!

  • Toggle Two Audio Tracks During Playback?

Is it possible to post a QuickTime movie to the Web with alternate soundtracks-- so the viewer chooses to view the video with either soundtrack #1 or soundtrack #-- but still sees the same (and only) video? I'm trying to save server space b/c this project will involve a number of videos and each will be posted in high and low bandwidth versions.
Read only if you're curious as to why I want to do this -- the reason for this is to provide #1 the standard audio track for the movie and #2 the alternate track that contains both the standard audio track and audio description. Audio description provides oral descriptions of the visual information during gaps in the dialogue/narration of the main program. Folks who are sighed would choose #1 and folks who are blind or have low vision would choose #2.
    Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

There are some more complicated ways to solve the problem, but a very easy way would be to make two reference movies, and have both audio tracks as external movies. Your reference movie 1 would have the video only movie and sound 1 only movie inside it. The reference movie 2 would have the same external video only movie, and the second audio only movie.
I was worried that there might be something strange about the progressive download, like would all of the first track have to download before the second one started to download, so I tested it:
    http://staff.funnygarbage.com/colin/3tracks/g1.mov
    http://staff.funnygarbage.com/colin/3tracks/g2.mov
    http://staff.funnygarbage.com/colin/3tracks/g3.mov
    http://staff.funnygarbage.com/colin/3tracks/one.mov
    http://staff.funnygarbage.com/colin/3tracks/two.mov
    http://staff.funnygarbage.com/colin/3tracks/three.mov
Don't try the first three links at first, just the second three links. You should find that any of the three starts to play as soon as it can, while still downloading. The first three links are the actual external files, and the second three links are tiny reference movies.
The one thing your users would give up would be the ability to change tracks in mid play (that can be done in other ways though), but for your application hopefully someone won't decide half way through that in fact they are poor sighted, and should have used the other link.
One other possible advantage of the reference movie approach is that the track that is currently not being heard does not have to be streamed, which would eat into the bandwidth.

  • Video doesn't play while audio does during playback

I use FCE 1.0.1 and since I upgraded to Leopard I have had a little problem. When I put the video setting in Fire-Wire, it plays fine with audio playing through my camcorder. But when I put the video setting in Real Time to play the audio through my speakers, the video doesn't play while the audio is playing fine. After 5 or 6 seconds, the audio stops playing too.
My G5 is a single 1.8 GHz processor and I am running 10.5.1
    Anything?

I appreciate your insight with this. If I could ask one more set of questions; Would you recommend the "upgrade" linked below or the Full version? And what will be the practical differences for me the user?
I have started a new project in version 1.0.1 (capturing and a few edits, etc) since upgrading to Leopard. Will all of my work be there with either upgrade or full version after install?
    Thanks so much.

  • HT1689 Downloaded song loses audio halfway during playback.  Can anyone help?

I have a MacBook Pro OSX 10.6.8.  I've just downloaded 2 songs from Itunes.   They seem to download okay.  When I try to play them, they're all okay until about a third of the way through and the audio stops.  the bar continues to move along, but no sound comes through.  I've tried deleting them from PURCHASED and re-downloading them.  Same thing happens.  Can anyone help?

If they've re-downloaded in the same state then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find those songs and use the 'Report a Problem' link.

  • Audio pauses during playback

Although I can't replicate the problem on my machine my
client says that a few of the audio clips pause for a few seconds
    then continue.
It's a glorified Powerpoint presentation with audio talking
about each slide. Graphics are exported JPEGs from Powerpoint and
the audio are basic mono 64kbps MP3s that have been imported into
    Director and not externally linked.
I have a feeling the pauses are because of her computer's
access to the CD-ROM drive as it looks for the next graphic and
audio to load. I'm still waiting to hear from her on whether or not
this problem is replicated on another machine. I have no problem
with it on mine. Any other thoughts?
    Thanks.

Not usually a conspiracy theorist but geez, take a look at the threads!
So if you are using ZenCast to download them, and transfer them, then they are going across as Motion-JPGs. Have you tried just copying over the MP3s to the device, not the Motion-JPGS. I have had some issues with the Motion-JPGs ZenCast creates. I think it has a hard time with VBR sometimes or something. But I find the MP3s play just fine.
So, do the MP3 files play OK?

  • Audio Dropouts on calls after v.1.1.4 update.

I installed the *1.1.4 firmware* update the day it came out...since then, I'm having consistent audio-dropouts during calls.
It happens for anyone that I call, about *every 4 to 6 seconds*, I get a blip of silence, and makes conversing very difficult.
I tried the "Restore" option in iTunes, it backed up my phone first, then went to factory defaults.... Even before restoring my data, I made an outgoing call by manually dialing and got the same audio problem.
    Any ideas out there?
    thanks in advance,

If you have a friend that has a computer with iTunes on it, I would recommend Restoring your iPhone on their computer incase the firmware update through your computer might have not gone through correctly.
Or take it to a Genius Bar at a nearby Apple Store and have them restore and make sure the software is updated on your iPhone for you. Sometimes it just helps when they use their computers for updates.
I've noticed others having issues with updating their firmware as well on their personal computers, but when they take it in to the Genius Bar and they restore/update with their computers, it seems to work fine afterwards.

  • 60GB song audio dropouts

I just got a black 60GB Ipod and it works great except for intermittent (1 or 2) audio dropouts during the first song played. I have 53 GB of 320k MP3 files loaded.
I wonder if the large song sizes (average 9 MB) causes the buffer to choke during the initial loading (first song played). The problem does not happen on subsequent songs.
Any comments ? Should I return it ?
    Thanks

I play the MP3's also on my SONOS based system on my home audio system. I definitely can tell the difference between 320k and 160k MP3's on a high end system.
I reset the iPod and called Apple tech support. If it happens again in 5 days I will return the iPod.

  • Audio dropping out during playback in timeline

    Hey everyone,
I've dug through these forums and unless I just completely overlooked it I have not found a solution to this issue. I've listed my setup below and then have stated the issue I'm experiencing.
    27-inch, Mid 2011 iMac
    3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    16GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    AMD Radeon HD 6970 1024MB
    Running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
    Currently working off of a portable 1TB G-Technology G-DRIVE via FW800.
Working in Premiere Pro CS6 Version 6.0.2
Editing in a sequence with settings:
    1920 x 1080 23.976fps (also tried in a 29.97fps timeline with same issue)
Working with footage that is 23.98fps
Working with a combination of ProRes 422 (LT) and native H.264 Quicktime files strait from a 5D Mark 3.
The issue I'm having is during playback the audio will competely drop out. The video will continue playing on just fine but the audio drops completely out. All audio levels drop as well in the audio mixer meters so it truly is losing all communication with my audio layers in the timeline.
I read in other forums to go into Finder and delete out the .caf files, re open Premiere Pro, wait for them to be recreated then carry on. I tried this approach with no luck. Deleting the .caf did not change anything. Audio is still dropping out as I try to play through my timeline. The only way to get the audio back is to pause then press play again. I have 5 total channels of audio with only 2 of those channel active.
Any ideas on what is happening would be greatly appreciated. This is incredibly frustrating have to export out a video just to be able to watch it through.

Having this annoying problem also.  Using the Space Bar to play timeline it takes pressing and holding to a count of three or trying press play three time in a row using the space bar to get ungarbled audio, or any audio at all in a normal uncomplicated sequence on the timeline.
Really annoying.  Audio used to be so simple and untaxing to a sequence.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014.2 Playback Freezing, Audio Dropouts

There are several times when I'm working on a project, whether small, medium or large in size, where playback tends to seize up my entire machine and everything locks up/freezes for 3-5 seconds.  Then when it starts to play again, I get the audio dropout error.  After scouring through multiple forums, I saw one of the Adobe help suggestions was to remove the speakers (one that a user scoffed at).  I thought, what the hell, and unplugged my headphones.  Voila - playback is stutter free.  Now, I haven't worked for hours on end yet so this is a preliminary result.  My concern is that I work in an open office so I'm surrounded by colleagues working so having headphones is ideal.  I'm in a catch 22 and not sure what solutions there are so I don't experience program hang-ups so I can work in silence.

  • Audio levels on an external monitor vary during playback when using HDMI audio

I've been having issues with movie playback using a large 1080p HDMI TV.   During playback the audio level will come in strong, go faint, then go strong again, but not on any sort of pattern I could discern.   It did this on three seperate movies legally purchased via iTunes.  I get audio and video without trouble, its just the audio goes soft when it shouldn't.
If you remember the VHS days and "MACROVISION" encoding, then you have an idea what it was doing, although it was the audio levels, not the video playback.
Is this a fault of the system, a DRM gremlin, or something else?

I think you may be onto something with the graphics card concept. The problem I am having only exists when I am working on an HD project. When I switched back to DV-NTSC then the monitor is fine during playback.
Yes, I am routing my external monitor through my DV deck, which is not an HD deck - so again, that could be another weak link in the chain.
This is the first HD project that I am editing, so obviously a few kinks still need to be worked out. My internal hard drive has 1.5 gigs of ram but I am not sure what the specs are on the graphics card.

  • NO AUDIO DURING PLAYBACK ON TIMELINE

Ever since I tried using the Narration tool in Premiere Elements 12, I have had nothing but problems with audio.  The narration tool itself cause Premiere to crash.  I decided not to use it again, but I continue to have problems.  I can hear audio in the clips when i play them through the source monitor, but if I drop it on the timeline, then there is no audio during playback.  I've already checked my audio output settings and I've already tried restarting Elements and my Macbook.  I've even tried to change the audio output devices just to make sure I didn't screw it up when trying to activate the microphone for narration.  Please help!
*NOTE - this is only a problem in the current project.  When I made a new project, it played back fine.  The problem is that I have hundreds of assets that I've renamed with descriptive file names, as opposed to the formatted file name the camera gave them.

    Good morning Steve.
Yes, there is a waveform on the clips.  However, when I open Audio Mixer, I do not see any audio registering.
Also, I do not have a USB microphone plugged into my computer.
Finally, I have done the Audio Hardware check.  I have tried using both "Built in Output" and "System Default Input/Output" but neither works.
Not sure if it helps to know this, but I have also tried to add music files to both Audio 1 track and also Soundtrack track.  Neither one will play back audio on the timeline, even though I can clearly see the waveform on the file.  It also does not register on the audio mixer.  This tells me that it;s definitely an issue with this specific timeline.  Is there any setting or mute button I may have accidentally changed?  None of the mute buttons are checked off in the audio mixer.
