Audio Dropouts on H.264 Quicktime movies playing from CD ROM or DVD ROM

I've been consistently having trouble getting H.264 .mov files saved on a CD-Rom or DVD-ROM to play back smoothly on Windows computers. The files will open, but there always seems to be sporadic audio dropouts, every 5-10 seconds the audio will drop out for half a second or so. This doesn't appear to be affecting the video. When the files are copied to the hard drive, the problem goes away, and the problem isn't present at all when playing back on Macs (regardless of whether the file is on a disc or on the HD).
I've read elsewhere on this forums that this is perhaps a data-rate problem, but this really doesn't make any sense to me, seeing as these are highly compressed, very small files (5 fps on the video, audio is AAC mono, 32kbps). Unless my understanding of data rate is completely backwards, a DVD Video or Audio CD would have a much higher data-rate. Seeing as Macs have no problem with this, I'm inclined to think it's some sort of problem with Windows' ability to handle AAC audio. If anyone has any experience with this, and/or ideas for a solution, I would greatly appreciate some feeback.
Thanks!

If the problem goes away when the file is copied to the hard drive, then the problem is almost certainly with the data transfer rate from the CD/DVD drive. If the problem were with Windows decoding H.264 and/or AAC, the problem would also appear for files copies to the hard drive. H.264 is a pretty data-intensive format, so it could easily exceed the available data rate of a CD or DVD. (note that file size will make no difference; it's the data rate, which comes from a combination o the image size of the video and the compression of the video and audio tracks) that's the only factor).
Run QuickTime Player, open one of the videos, and open the Movie Inspector for the movie (Window -> Show Movie Inspector). Then take a look at the data rate and compare that to the data rate of your CD/DVD drive. If the drive's rate is lower, you have your answer. If it shows that it should be able to handle the data rate, you may need to update or replace the drivers for your CD/DVD drive and/or update the drive's firmware.
Hope this helps.

Why do only some QuickTime movies play on the iPhone?
I have noticed that only some QuickTime movies play on the iPhone, does anyone know why?
    Thanks,

Depends on how the movies are encoded for Quicktime (i.e. which compression/codec). The iPhone supports only H.264 video.

  • I can no longer play quicktime mov files from a canon firestore

I can no longer play quicktime mov files from a canon firestore from an HDV camera that play on other macs and play in vlc. It happened all of a sudden. Files that I could play before no longer play. It seems to be something wrong with the quicktime codec management because the files do not play in premiere and final cut pro. In FCP it says: File Error: 1 File(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown. These files work on other computers. I have four drives and it doesnt matter which file i attempt to open on each drive, these files are unreadable on this system. Please help. Possible issues might be a corrupted index, but i dont understand how that can go across four different drives.

Apple kindly updated Quicktime and rendered Firestore files unplayable. I think a recent update of iTunes was the culprit.
Solutions: What I did. Wipe the system disc. Re-install Snow Leopard. Re-install FCP7. Don't update Quicktime or iTunes to anything after Jun 2011. QT v7.6.6 is the last good version. That'll get your files back.
A colleague tried a different approach. For this you need a pre-July 2011 version of the file QuickTimeComponents.component.  It is in the system/library/QuickTime folder. Delete your current one and drop in an old one.
However if you're working with Final Cut X, I think you screwed until Focus and Apple work something out. My address is on my contacts page at teevideousadotcom if you need any further help.

  • Quicktime Movies playing 4:3 in Widescreen Menus???

I have exported a 30 second Quicktime movie that was shot and edited in Anamorphic in Final Cut Pro by doing the following:
    1) File --- Export ----- Quicktime Movie --- Current Settings ---- Video Only
I then set up the Movie Theatre opening menu in DVD Studio Pro in 16:9 Mode. I then imported the 30 second Quicktime movie that I just made in DVD SP and put it in the menu's drop zone. When I went to simulate the menu, the menu was playing in 4:3 mode in the 16:9 drop zone. Heads are getting cut off.
What am I doing wrong? Am I exporting wrong from FCP or is there a menu button or drop zone button that I am not pressing in DVD SP that I should be?
All I want to happen is that the QT movie that I exported from FCP play in perfect widescreen mode in a 16:9 menu in DVD SP.
    Thanks in advance

If the material is anamorphic then turn on the check mark in the anamorphic column in the browser and the video should display as 16:9.

  • Can you child lock your iphone or ipad so they can't turn off a movie playing from itunes?

can you child lock your iphone or ipad so they can't turn off a movie playing from itunes?

No. The only option is to actually prevent the child from being able to physically touch the device i.e. lock the child, not the device.

  • FCP7 HELP - Exported quicktime mov plays differently than what I edited on the timeline. The playback shows the clips with ins and outs that are different than what I set in the clips when I edited - some are too early and the clips don't playback

    Please help ASAP.
    Specs: IOS 10.6.8
    Processor 2.4GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 -- Everything is edited, sourced, and stored on an 2TB external hard drive to make things go faster.
    Editing with FCP 7
When I export the sequence I edited with quicktime, the playback video is very different from what I edited on the timeline. The playback has the clips with ins and outs that are way off than what I cut, and some of the clips don't show at all or have changed transitions. However when I play in the timeline in FCP, the sequence is fine, just the way I cut it.
The source of the clips was one long .mov that I cut into clips for the timeline. Everything has gone smoothly but the exported .mov is just so different.
How can I get the time codes of the clips to be the same in the exported .movs? I just want the quicktime .mov to represent my edit exactly.
This video is due tomorrow - if the solution is too time consuming, can I play within the FCP player window and Log and Capture?
    Thanks,
    MV

What is your source material? Is it H.264? FCP does not work correctly with that material.
Click on a source clip in the FCP Browser, and once selected, type Command + 9 to see the item properties for the clip. Either report those properties, or take a screen shot of the item properties, and post that here.
Next, click anywhere in your timeline, and then type Command + 0 {zero} to see your Sequence Settings. Either report those Sequence Settings, or take a screen shot of the Sequence Settings and post that here.

  • Will a Quicktime movie play on a TV?

I am using OS 10.3.9 and Quicktime pro 7.0.2. I also have the MPEG2 plug-in installed. Can I make a move that will play on a regular DVD player and a TV?

I ain't no expert; I'm just a learner and experimentor. That said...
I play any and all QT movies from my laptop to pretty much any TV. I've been experimenting with compressing movie files in different formats so they are not so large a file size. Most currently I am encoding in AVI (DivX- free downloads) and in Toast's Video CD format. I just don't burn it to a CD or DVD disc. I leave the newly encoded Video CD (which is now a MPEG-1 muxed file) on my hard drive. Likewise if I created an AVI file. This works with other export options, you don't need Toast. (Read more below).
All you need to do is connect a video-out source from your computer to any cheap old RCA type plugs and plug those into the video-in port on most TV's. Likewise with the audio. (On the computer side, for audio, I use the headphone or Mic out port). Then open your QT movie and from the Movie drop-down menu, select Present Movie. It's great!
That said, here are the hurdles:
You need to be able to get the video signal out from your computer. My G4 laptop has a video-out port that has a small connector that on one side, fits the computer port, and on the other side has one standard RCA output port and one SVideo port. By RCA plug I am referring to the regular old cables you use in the back on most stereos. Super cheap in Radio Shack. And most TV's have input ports for those, some on the back, some on the front. If not, you can plug into a regular VCR, which would be connected to the TV. All VCR's have RCA ports. To view, set the TV or VCR to the channel or port where your cable is plugged in. On my VCR I select Video 1, which camoes after the last channel I get. On a TV, I select something similar. Fiddle around.
Older Macs had RCA ports. Newer ones have ways to do it but need some form of adaptor. You might even get by using your regular Monitor out port, with a adaptor that has RCA plugs at the other end.
Once past the hurdle of cable connection (not a big deal) the playing of the movie to TV is easy. For this reason, I recommend not creating too high a quality file. You won't need it. I took a 15 GB iMovie file and exported it in QT 6.5.2 Pro using the Toast (6.0) Video CD option. It produced a 400 MB (yes, MB, not GB) file. The only hitch with that is it produces a 320x240 movie. Blown up too large looks poor. So I use QT>Movie>Present Movie>Double. That shows the movie in a black border but pretty large and very clear. Or if you encode/compress using other means - like DV stream, or MPEG-4, you'll be able to play the movie in QT Full Screen mode. Either way, I like what this does. And I'm still experimenting/learning. Good luck.

  • No Audio in Quicktime Movie taken from Camera

I have a Pentax OptioS6 and used its video capture mode. When I viewed the movie, it opened QuickTime, and then I received a message that software was missing, and was directed to the QuickTime Components web site, with several third-party components. I am not sure which one to install. Does anyone know how I should handle this issue. Without installing any software, there is no audio for the movie. In order to get audio do I have to install one of the third-party components? I already have DivX. So if this is the proper component to allow me to watch the movie with sound, do I simply use that program to open the movie?
    Thanks in advance.
    Russell

MPEG, Mono, 32.000 kHz is your audio and MPEG is the codec. Trouble is that doesn't tell me enough.
QuickTime can play MPEG-1 files but yours isn't because it shows DivX as the video codec. Normal MPEG-1 files are muxed (single codec and file) and your file shows two codecs.
Try playing and converting the file with MPEG Streamclip (free). It can export to QuickTime formats.

  • My older M-JPEG quicktime movies play black in Quicktime and Keynote

I was just recently asked to give a presentation that I had put together 3 years ago in Keynote.  All of my quicktime movies that Keynote were using were M-JPEG and used to all play great the last time I opened my file.  Since Then I've updated my OS to 10.7.1, I have a Macbook Pro, Quicktime 10.1, Keynote 09,  but also have Quicktime Pro.
When I play my keynote, all of my movies come up black when they play.  If I try and open my quicktime movies directly and play them in Quicktime or Quicktime pro, they also come up black.  But I can open it in VLC and it plays fine.
I tried to start converting the quicktime movies using SmartConverter, but it's time consuming since I have over 50 quicktime movies that this keynote is referencing.  Some of the quicktime movies are also erroring out too when trying to convert them.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with M-JPEG quicktime movies that used to work just fine?  Anything I could do across the board to be able to use these rather than converting them all?
    Thanks,
    Dale

QuickTime in Lion is not reliable as of 10.7.1. The next OS update will fix this. Should be out tomorrow when Apple updates all of its software for iCloud.
See if your problems are gone then.

  • Quicktime movies play a half scrambled screen  in Windows XP with QT7

Sometimes the quicktime movies in windows xp will only play 1/2 screen and thats scrambled. The lower part of screen is usually a pixaly blue color. The Apple quicktime movies for fcp demos are like that. The same files play fine on my mac. What can I do to correct this if anything.
I am running the latest version of quicktime for windows

  • Help! Quicktime Movies playing only five still frames

When I try and play quicktime movies on my PC (Windows Vista) they play back with sound, but only five still frames from the movie play on the screen. How do i fix the problem?
I'm running windows vista and Quicktime 7.3.1. The problem shouldn't be the video card as all my other video player applications playback fine.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
I have found the solution to this problem I presented.
Sorry, I didn't realize that a computer monitor cannot support these images accurately.
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/rossshane/fcpfaq.php
I had a Canopus ADVC-110 sitting right here.
Plugged it up to the TV,
    and the images appeared fine.
But this brings up one more question:
Is there a way to have all these images from Final Cut accurately displayed on a computer monitor ?
I've got a lot of more of them around than TVs . . .
Sorry to have bothered you with this, but I would appreciate further information on displaying the images on a computer monitor.
    Thanks !

  • Can a QuickTime movie play for more than 60 seconds per page

Can a Quicktime movie be set to play for more than 1 minute per page in Keynote. I have clips that run up to 3 minutes. For now I have pulled the clip into 3 different pages and set the times to match but I get a 10 second delay between the pages that is very distracting.

Yes I am trying to set up an automatic transition after the movie has played. I have still photos between the movies. I want the entire presentation to be self running. I did use the special builds in and out and have the action set at none. The movie clip will not run more than 60 seconds?

  • Audio out of sync in Quicktime on export from Premiere

Currently using Premiere Pro CS3 3.2 and Quicktime 7.5.5
When I export to a quicktime .mov, my audio is a few frames out of sync. I've tried downgrading to older versions of quicktime with no success. Everything is completely in sync inside Premiere. If I import my rendered out-of-sync .mov back into Premiere, it magically syncs up fine again. It's the weirdest thing.
I don't suffer this issue when exporting to Real Media or .wma.
My machine is an Intel Core 2 Duo 6700 2.66, 2 GB Ram. Running XP Pro 2002 Service Pack 3. Premiere Pro CS3 3.2, Quicktime 7.5.5.
I'm using .mxf files shot on the HVX-200. My source video is 1280 x 720. I'm exporting using the h.264 codec. I'm fairly certain that it isn't the footage. I tried syncing up some color mattes to music in a new short test project and I'm still 4 frames off.
I thought the problem might be the use of mp3's but I replaced them with .wav and .aiff files and still the same problem. When I export to quicktime, the audio is 4 frames ahead of the video. In order to make it sync up, I have to move the audio four frames to the right. This is a terrible solution

Thanks for responding. We did record at 24pn.
However as a test, I started a new project, loaded a piece of music (.wav), and created some plain color mattes in Premiere. Then I synced up the colors to change to the beat of the music. An export results in the same problem, so best that I can tell the issue is independent of the camera.

  • Why can't I stream quicktime movie clips from mac book to apple tv

I have converted old analog camcorder video to .dv format and futher to .mov when opening and viewing in QuickTime.  I recently purchased a new 1020 Apple TV device in hopes of viewing these movies in a wireless fashion on our Samsung Smart big screen TV.  I am able to play these movies through a Lightning to HDMI adaptor, however, I am having no success in streaming these movies through AirPlay.  The files appear to be too large to load and play.  What to do? Thanks in advance, Jon

I suspect there isn't any need to convert from the QuickTime format. The Apple TV is quite capable of playing QuickTime movies, just not all of them. QuickTime movies (.mov) come in many shapes and sizes but have one thing in common, "the container", the container holds all the various types of video, audio and sometimes some other stuff.
Providing the contents of the container can be played by the Apple TV, the Apple TV will play the QuickTime movie. The audio profile, dimensions, data rate and video codec as posted by the OP are all compatible with the Apple TV.
.mov containers containing contents that can't be played by the Apple TV, can't be played by the Apple TV. The file in the page you linked to contains video that uses the 3ivx codec which is why it needs converting.
The OP's issue is either that the file is corrupt or that they have a problem on their network, hence why we need to ascertain whether the Apple TV will play content that we know should work.
