Audio Drops on QT Files After P2 Log and Transfer

I'm using Log and Transfer to convert my P2 data into editable QuickTimes; however, for some reason, my rendered QuickTime files loose their audio at some point. I say, "Some point," because it's not at a specific timecode. It's different for each clip. Some maintain the audio for 80% of the clip while others might be 30%. I know the audio is there because I can hear throughout the entire length of each clip in the Log and Transfer window. Any idea what's happening during the render to QuickTime process?

Possible quick fix -won't hurt to try it.
Deleting FCP Preferences:
Open a Finder window. Set the view mode to columns:
Click the house icon that has your name next to it.
Click the folder "Library" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Preferences" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Final Cut Pro User Data" in the next column.
Move the files "Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" and "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache" to the Trash and empty it.
When you have a stable set of preference files, download [Preference Manager|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] to back them up. If you have further problems, the backup can be recalled and you can continue working.

I cannot import my AVCHD files by using log and transfer. I can see all the files, but when I add the file to import que it doesnt work, the status is a red and says that its no data. I have tried with different cards and different cardreaders, but it is still the same. Why?!

Please give us more specific information -
What make/model camcorder are you using?
Are you absolutely certain this is AVCHD video?  Tell us more about the video settings you used in the camcorder (eg, frame size, frame rate, quality level)
Why are you attempting Log & Transfer from a card reader instead of from your camcorder?  Have you tried doing Log & Transfer from your camcorder?
Are the SD cards straight from the camcorder, unaltered, or are you just using the cards as storage?
Are you using FCE 4.0 or FCE 4.0.1?

  • Not all files work in log and transfer

Hoping maybe someone has found a fix to this issue...
When editing an HDV project not all my .m2t files (all in the same folder) want to transfer using Log and Transfer.  Most of the files will transfer correctly but sometimes it skips a file and puts a red exclamation mark in the status.  Not sure why most files work and a few don't when they are all from the same folder and from the same shoot.  The files will open fine in other 3rd party apps so the files are ok.
Thanks in advance for any help!

FCP may be a bit more discriminating on the file structure or header integrity, dunno, never shot HDV myself but we've seen similar posts for years. Try copying the files to your drive first and then ingesting.
Side note, ust because other apps can open the files doesn't mean they are intact or useable. You don't mention what these apps are but if you can export form them, do that and then ingest the new file which might have all of its glitches reparied to suit FCP.

  • FCP7 crashes after long log and transfer L&T

In FCP7 it seems that I can L&T 60 minutes and even a bit longer with no problem. But every time I have footage that is 1.5 hours FCP crashes at the very end of the transfer. The file is created, I can see the 100+ gig file in the capture scratch folder, but it's not readable. I have to capture the file in 2 segments, which really stinks when syncing 2 or 3 or more cameras. Any idea what's going on here?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Have you tried resetting your fcp preferences?  Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager is the best tool for doing this in my opinion.

  • Crashing after Log and Transfer

I am experiencing a FCP crash after using Log and Transfer to import P2 files.  The material is on an external FW800 drive.  I go to Add Custom Path in the Log and Transfer dialog box, point the software to the CONTENTS folder of each captured P2 card, the list populates with the clips, I drag the files into the que, and they import as usual.  All is well and good until I X out of Log and Transfer, and when I do that, FCP crashes.  I have not experienced this when capturing directly from a camera. This has happened over and over since beginning this project, and we are still yet to get all the material into the machine for editing.
Also, in case it is pertinent, I am using a MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Core i7 machine with 8GB RAM.
Any ideas or has anyone else experienced this?  Thanks in advance!

First thing I'd try is trashing your preferences.  Google preference manager from digital rebellion.  It's a free download and in invaluable.  It's so cool you'll WANT to pay for it.  It allows you to store a good set of preferences, trash them when they get funky and then restore the good set, including all the cool stuff you created.
ANYWAY,  I'm in the habit of saving every which way from Tuesday after something interesting has happened, like a capture or L&T.  I know that's not a solution, but a best practice.  hopefully a pref trash will set you right.

  • A conclusion to ALL the AVCHD/.mts Log and Transfer Final Cut Pro 7 issues

    Hey all! Happy 2011!
So this is my first post here and hopefully when this thread concludes with all your help we should be able to help a lot of people and save them the heartache that I have recently had to endure by stating these things in plain English. I have some questions at the end which I think could be answered very easily! Please, no gobbledygook!
It would be great if people in the know can confirm/deny or comment on my points so those that are in a similar position to me can save their time and just get on with it.
    1) I have a Panasonic HDC-TM300 and it records in AVCHD/.mts files
    2) FCP 7 can deal with AVCHD files via the Log and Transfer feature if you do it straight from the camera or memory card and can convert to ProRes 422 (LT)?
    3) Log and Transfer _*DOES NOT WORK*_ if you move the AVCHD/.mts to an external drive without maintaining the folder structure?
    4) What is required from the folder structure that makes FCP act this way?
    5) Basically I have f*ed it by doing the part 3 above which I think is the most natural thing in the world to do! Im sure that many people have done the same thing as me please correct me if i’m wrong
After a lot of research on the internet I have come up with the following solutions and in brackets my thoughts on them. If anyone has any experience with them please please let me and other people know so I can get on with my life and editing these files.
    a) Harass the people that make FCP 7.0 and make sure that the next update solves this stupid/idiotic/ridiculous oversight. (This could take a while but i think we should do it for the sake of future generations)
    b) Someone could let us know about a workaround to this that may be the folder structure that FCP needs to be able to do L&T (needs to be simple so that everyone can do it. This would be the best short term solution until part a is completed)
    c) Buy one of the converter programs such as ClipWrap, Toast Titanium or Aunsoft mts converter. If so which is the most/ least recommended and why? (Least desirable option due to requirement for extra program so extra faffing and extra cost).
Thanks y’all and keep up the awesome work!!
    K*

    2) FCP 7 can deal with AVCHD files via the Log and Transfer feature if you do it straight from the camera or memory card and can convert to ProRes 422 (LT)?
    Yes.
    3) Log and Transfer DOES NOT WORK if you move the AVCHD/.mts to an external drive without maintaining the folder structure?
This is true of ANY tapeless format.
    4) What is required from the folder structure that makes FCP act this way?
This is due to the fact that most of them have files in those other folders in that structure that FCP needs to access in order to get all the proper components assembled properly. Sure, there are formats that have folders with nothing in them. Doesn't matter, FCP is designed to look at the full structure and work from that.
    5) Basically I have f*ed it by doing the part 3 above which I think is the most natural thing in the world to do!
The most natural thing in the world is to NOT backup everything? Well, that might be the case, since this comes up so darn often. But, it is wrong. The full structure must be maintained. This is true of many tapeless formats and more than just FCP. Avid and Premiere need this for certain tapeless formats too.
    a) Harass the people that make FCP 7.0 and make sure that the next update solves this stupid/idiotic/ridiculous oversight.
It isn't an oversight. It is designed like this on purpose. You need to learn how to do things right. You obviously know what that is now...keep the full card structure. So now it is up to you to continue to do things properly. Instead of insisting that an NLE conform the way it works to suit your needs.
    b) Someone could let us know about a workaround to this that may be the folder structure that FCP needs to be able to do L&T (needs to be simple so that everyone can do it. This would be the best short term solution until part a is completed)
Easy. Shoot a small bit on another card. Look at the folder structure. Recreate that structure in your backed up footage. Often this will mean making folders with exact names, even if they are empty. But if they have files in them, even small ones, then the first backup you did might not work....because those might be some of the small files FCP needs in order to do the L&T process properly. Always worth trying though.
    c) Buy one of the converter programs such as ClipWrap, Toast Titanium or Aunsoft mts converter. If so which is the most/ least recommended and why?
I highly recommend Clipwrap. Mainly because I haven't tried the others. But also because the author is always following the latest formats, and works hard to make sure his software works with them. It solved an importing issue I had with the Sony NXCam camera...within a week of me moaning about the issue.

  • Log and Transfer Issues - Canon HF10

I have just recently acquired a Canon HF10 video camera and have had success getting some of the video to my Mac via log and transfer, however when the video files seem to be much longer than a few minutes the process fails. The status bar while it's transferring makes it all the way to 100%, but the file itself never moves up to the browser. When I click the file in the log and transfer window after the status bar has stopped moving I get a red exclamation mark with unknown error. Any help on this will greatly be appreciated.

I believe I have figured out what the issue is. I was using an old 250Gb external as my scratch drive. Well - this drive is in FAT format and I just discovered that the FAT drives are limited to 4GB limit, hence the reason I couldn't transfer my larger files. I'm planning on reformatting this drive to Journaled OSX and I should be cool.

  • Log and Transfer slower in FCP 7?

    Hi,
Here at my job, we often work with the RED camera. As a workflow, we use Log and Transfer to convert all red files into Apple Pro Res. We used to work with FCP 6.0.6 and when we did, 1 hour of footage took 2h (3h max!!) to convert. This week though, we upgraded to Final Cut Studio 3 (thus upgrading to FCP 7.0.1) and the conversion time increased dramatically!
It's not rare for Directors to use the full 4k resolution with that camera. But for that project, he only used the 2k and 3k resolutions. So I started to Log and Transfer and came back 3 hours after that and not even 1/3 of the batch was converted! What I didn't know with the new version, is that it automatically converts in Apple Pro Res 4444, instead of Apple Pro Res 4:2:2 (HQ), as it did before. So I did some tests. I took 10 minutes of footage and tried to convert them in:
Test #1 - Apple Pro Res 4444 *highest quality possible*
Test #2 - Apple Pro Res (proxy) *lowest quality possible, for offline*
Test #3 - Apple Pro Res (HQ) *2nd to best quality possible*
And to my surprise, those 3 tests gave me the same results. For 10 minutes of footage, the conversion took 1h08 (Actually, 1h08 for test #1, 1h06 for test #2 and 1h07 for test #3). That means that for 1 hour of footage, you'd need at least 6 hours of conversion time! This is crazy. And it's not because we have bad computers... we have Mac Pros, dual quad-cores with 8gb of ram in them. I mean, it takes less time to convert the red files into .mxf files for Avid (approx. 4h for 1 hour of footage)!
So my question is: Why the heck would it take longer to convert Red files with the Log and Transfer tool in the latest version of Final Cut Pro?
    Thank you,
    André

  • Log and Transfer limit?

I dropped about 8 SD cards onto log and transfer. All shot with the HMC150.
Well I counted the clips and at least 50 out of the 720 did not export.
Is there a clip limit to what it can handle. I would hate to have to go card by card. Thats why I stopped using toast. It was odd to it picked random clips to not export....

OK, people. Got a freaking work-around.
Select the clip in the log and transfer window *), then define your IN and OUT points for this clip, THEN hit "Add to Queue". Marked portion of the clip will import nicely. Now we just need full 1980x1020 support. Hopefully an updated FCE soon?
*) Interface of the Log and Transfer window is as beautiful as any Mac app. Why hasn't that interface lift ever made it to the rest of Final Cut? Hopefully, next version.

  • Log and transfer MTS file and audio slip issues

I'm having 3 issues with a  30 minute project in FCE HD.
    1. When I create clips in log and transfer, sometimes my footage chatters when I watch in in the viewer or place it on the timeline.  It didn't chatter in camera, I checked, and it doesn't chatter in log and transfer. I can re-cut the clip in log and transfer but I'm trying to save time!
    2. When creating a clip in log and transfer or just transferring a full clip, FCE trims the last 3 to 4 seconds off.  I need these 3 to 4 seconds!
    3.  When trimming and razoring a 9 minute+ clip on the timeline, the audio begins to slip and continues to slip the longer I trim.
If anyone has answers to my three issues, please help.  This project is frustrating in content and now it's frustrating in editing!
Thank you in advance for all your help!!

Sorry it has taken so long for me to get back to you.  Again, thank you for taking the time to help me.
Your first question, these clips came from my Panasonic HMC 150 camera.  I filmed at 24 fps. I downloaded the files from my SD card to my laptop, then use log and transfer to bring the clips into the project.
FCE only offers 25 fps or 29.97 fps. So, there is a discrepancy there.  I'm not sure how to fix that when I want to stay with 24 fps.  Yes, I can film at other frame rates, I just prefer 24 for what I generally create.  Is there a plugin for more frame rate choices in FCE?  Or is that just available in FCP?
Your second question, I always use insert.  I only use overwrite for my title cards.
And finally, your third, I am aware of the destination tabs.  I understand how they work.  My issue with having so many tracks is that I am working on a laptop without a mouse and sometimes when I move a clip the timeline jumps and creates the extra tracks when I place the clip.  I just need to be more careful when moving clips.
Now, as to my final issue and that is the trimming of the clips through log and transfer.  FCE trims off the first and  last couple of seconds and will not allow me to bring them into the project.  Is this a setting problem or just inherent of FCE?
I look forward to hearing from you!

  • Final Cut Express Log and Transfer files not playing audio on another mac

I recently purchased a new Mac Pro for video editing for work, and am having some issues with it. Previously i was working on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.11, on Final Cut Express 4.
I used Log & Transfer to get the AVCHD videos from my Canon HF 11 onto my mac, and had no issues. Where my problems started was when I moved my video files to my new Mac Pro running OS 10.5.6. Now when I open those video files in either Quicktime or FCE, the VIDEO plays but _not the audio_. I thought maybe the video files were bad, but when I tried the original files on the new Mac, they still didn't work. I don't know if there's some codec that isn't on the new mac or if there's some other problem... I just know that my new amazing machine cannot play the files that my 3 year old one can. I'm not new to computers, but I'm not an Apple guru. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well I can try trashing the files, but I can't log and transfer the files again, as it's months of footage that aren't on the camera anymore. But i did find something else out. The files that were recorded with the camera's built-in mic recording is fine and with sound, but the files that I used my wireless mic setup had no sound. I don't know why that is, because they worked fine on the MacBook Pro. I tried log and transferring a new clip on the Mac Pro wit;h footage using the wireless mic, and still no sound.

  • Trying to delete original files on card after Log and Transfer in FC 7

Log and transfer is working great. But how do I delete the original files on my 32 gb class 6 card? Can't just select and hit delete. In fact theres a typo in the pop up box, "Warning, The selected media cannot deleted". They forgot the "be". Weird.

    Hi,
as you have seen already, you can't delete those files using the L&T menu; however you can delete those files either from within the camera's menu or accessing the card directly from the OSX.
    Regards,
    Armando.

  • I need to know best way to edit MXF files, with least rendering, is that converting the MXF or Log and Transfer? the end product is dvd, but I have lots and lots of these projects to do.

I am about to comence my Edit, and was told of Mpeg Streamclip, however this doesn't seem to work with my Canon XF305 Clips, the reason I was told to use it was so I wouldn't have to Render in Final Cut Pro all the time.. I do have the Canon Disc with the Plug in Utility and the update from their site.
Is it best to Convert these MXF files first and import them into FCP or use 'Log and Transfer', so far I am unable to do either!!
The projects on the timeline will have introduction .Movs already on it as a Template to re-use again and again with the new Footage ( MXF Files ) to be added and edited with transitions etc..This process is repeated again and again but with different MXF clips each time.
I am looking for the quickest and best way for workflow as there are 80 or more projects to do, each with 10 or so clips to be added to the timeline and Exported for DVD...Will I have to then Compress to fit onto DVD's??
I know Streamclip is an Mepeg 2 app but I thought the Canon XF305 Shot as mpeg2....
Is Log and Transfer my only Option?
Basically I need to know the quickest for Render purposes, and of course, the best way so the files aren't so huge etc etc.
Please, any suggestions would be greatly received....

We only work with PR422 files in FC7.  We use Shane's workflow with all 5D & MXF footage.
Make your life easier and stick to the ProRes family for your footage and edit sequences. Avoid H264 & convert any you have to ProRes.
Unless you are considering Blu-Ray the only way to deliver video on a DVD is to convert it to SD.
Depending on the length of your show you can make a Blu-Ray in Compressor but you have very limited authoring options when compared to DVD Studio Pro.
Compressor can also convert your HD to SD mpg-2 & Ac3 files. The best results usually come from setting the frame controls in the mpg-2 setting of Compressor to best. Depending on the the length of the show and your Qmaster settings this can take quite a while.
I personally find Compressor's HD to SD DVD conversion varies. Sometimes it is wonderful and sometimes not so much. I prefer the following as it is usually is faster and very consistent.
Export a quicktime movie (not QT conversion) of your final sequence
Import the exported HD file back into FC.
Create a SD 16x9 sequence and then drop in the recently exported HD seq and render. Rendering the sequence basically has FC doing the HD to SD conversion. Export the SD sequence and then convert to mpg-2 & ac3 in Compressor. While this does take time I still find it faster than Compressor with Qmaster utilizing all cores.
Another option is using jobs in Compressor
    http://pixelcorps.cachefly.net/macbreak-154-540p-h264.mov
In this workflow you would have Compressor convert the HD file to SD and then through jobs convert the SD file to mpg2 & Ac3.
In theory the jobs version could be faster (based on a number of variables- length, Qmaster, etc) but I haven't had time to compare the two.

  • Unknown Error when I Logging and Transfer P2 Card files in FCP 6.0.6

I have been trying for the past two week to Log and Transfer P2 files to my external hardrive using FCP 6.0.6 unsuccessfully.
Originally I tried to Log and Transfer directly from the Panasonic HPX-170 in between my shooting. The first time it was a success but from then on I always get the same Unknown Error when attempting to transfer. When I encountered the Unknown Error during the second transfer I went on to create folders with the P2 contents on my external Hard Drive.
When I drag any of the P2 folder content on the Log and Transfer window I can see all the clips. I can successfully transfer small B-roll clips I have but any big size file (all my interviews) return an Unknown Error symbol at the end of the transfer. I believe this is probably why I didn't encounter any issues during my first time.
I tried deleting the preferences in FCP and then Logging and Transfer and it works if the systems settings are set for the Mac Pro but not for the external HD. The problem is I don't have enough space on my Mac. I have cleared 45GB of space but my P2 files total 54GB. I tried the same process with a Mac Power Book with FCP 5.1.4 and again in encounter the same problem.
The external HD is a 1TB Western Digital that I have used before with FCP for editing but never before with P2 files. Its in good working order and has 79GB free space remaining. Both the camera and the P2 cards (16GB and 4GB) are also performing as expected.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

  • Canon HF10 avchd file will not transfer in Log and Transfer window

    Hello-
I just installed Final Cut Express 4 on my MacBook (intel core due with 4gigs ram... running snow leopard/ 10.6.1) and I cannot get any video to load in from my Canon Vixia HF10. When using the Log & Transfer window my camera is recognized and I see and can preview all the clips that are on the camera (attached via. USB). All video is shot at the highest quality FX rate. When I add a clip to the "Que" the wheel spins for about 10 seconds then it says '1 clip queued' and an orange "!" appears. If I hover over the icon it says 'failed- no data'.
I am using the apple intermediate HD codec 1060i and stereo audio. I have re-installed FCE, removed preferences files, rebooted the computer, restarted and reconnected the camera etc... and no luck.
Any ideas would be much appreciated. I have seen a smattering of others with a similar issue but no resolution that works.
    Thanks for your help!

I cannot get FCE to recognize my m2ts (AVCHD) files either. It seems FCE, like iMovie, will import directly from the camera but it will NOT import m2ts files already off-loaded from the camera onto a drive on your computer or network. Some have said it will work ONLY if the entire file set, including the support files the camera creates in addition to the video file itself, is present at the time you attempt the transfer. Worse, Canon's software that most people use to transfer the video files from the camera do not also transfer these support files. It may be doable if you connect the camera and transfer the entire file and folder structure as-is but that's only a guess.
If you are like me who offloaded these files long before I purchased my MAC (and did not also offoad the support files), you may be out of luck. This caveat to working with AVCHD files is a subtle distinction that Apple should clear up, especially since it is prominently highlighting this new capability. I was in the Apple store and viewed the product with a sales associate BEFORE the purchase. The sales associated looked at the Log and Transfer utility and also thought this would work-- so I bought FCE on the spot.
If anyone knows how to import previously off-loaded m2ts files directly into either iMovie or FCE, I would like to hear how it is done. Please note that I have been down the file conversion route too. Toast 10 de-synced the audio and other file converters left horrible jagged edges to moving pictures. De-interlace programs made it worse. Most conversions will introduce some corruption or undesireable artifact.
Others have said, boo hoo, AVCHD is a garbage codec that the pros will not touch and Apple shouldn't either. OK but Apple is attempting to sell its computers to the average Joe and people who like SIMPLICITY. Would be nice if Apple better supported AVCHD "for the rest of us."
