Audio ducking/fading

I have looked in the discussions and didn't see that anyone had brought this topic up before.
I was making a slideshow and imported some video into it. I don't need the audio, so in most of the clips I removed (i.e. reduced to zero) the audio before I imported them into Aperture.
Unfortunately, whether the clips have audio or not, Aperture 3 seems to want to temporarily fade my main music track. I've tried:
- turning the audio all the way down on each of the tracks
- importing the audio tracks of each clip and turning down the main volume control, fade in and fade out in the audio adjustments HUD
- unclicking the "reduce volume of main track" on audio adjustments HUD
- re-clicking the "reduce volume of main track" on audio adjustments HUD AND turning it all the way up to 100%
- removing the main audio track and re-adding it
Bottom line, nothing I've tried changes Aperture 3's apparent desire to fade audio in video clips, whether they have audio or not -- or whether I want the main track faded or not. Am I missing something, or is this something I should ask Apple to fix in a future update?
Thanks,
M.

Having the same issue this evening. I'd love an answer as well. Seems pretty basic that one should be able to choose to override the inserted video'a audio track with the track for the slide show.
Thanks to anyone who knows a workaround.

  • Trying to use SmartMix function for tutorial audio ducking

Hi. I'm using Adobe Premiere Elements 11 and am trying to use the SmartMix feature to enact automatic audio ducting so that the music automatically gets quieter when the narration speaks. My problem is I think the music volume goes a bit too low every time this happens. I am trying to figure how out to make it so the volume doesn't go quite so low, but so far don't understand how. Can anyone help? Thanks!
p.s. I also have Adobe Premiere Pro CC but all my tutorials have been created in Elements 11 and I don't understand how to use Premiere Pro yet.... if the audio ducking functions are far superior and worth learning, then that advice would be appreciated as well, especially any guidance about what I need to learn. I understand plug-ins may be necessary? I am in over my head! Thanks again!

I do not see any need to get Premiere Pro CC involved in this particular issue unless you need some other attribute of that program that Premiere Elements 11 does not have.
After you have applied Smart Mix and decide that you want the Soundtrack volume higher, I see at least two choices, both involving adjustment of
    the Soundtrack volume.
    1. In the Expert workspace, click and drag upward slowly the orange band that run horizontally across the Soundtrack clip. The orange band is referred to
as "rubberband" and, by default, relates to audio volume in the audio clip. Move the rubberband up to increase the volume and down to decrease it. Remember 0 dB = the volume of the original clip, not no sound.
    or
    2. With the Soundtrack selected/highlighted, go to Adjust Tab/Adjustments Palette/Volume Panel expanded and adjust the Volume Keyframes there.
If you are not OK with keyframes, I will post a more detailed account of how that is done.
    Try the rubberband way first.
We will be watching for your results. Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
    Thank you.

  • Problems with audio ducking with Voiceovers in iMovie08

I think I have a basic misunderstanding of how audio ducking works. I have a project made up of still pictures with transitions between each picture. I have added background music to the project.
Next, I have added voiceovers using the voice over tool in iMovie08. I select the clip, then select audio, and ducking at 15%. Some of them work great, others will duck audio for 2 or 3 seconds and then the background music shoots back up to its normal volume, and finally some do not work at all, no matter what I try.
I have spent quite a bit of time trying to figure it out and could use some help.
    Many Thanks in Advance.

This is sad. Discussions reports 2 helpful answers and 1 solved answer. I see no answers. I too am having problems. No matter what I set for ducking (including zero%), it is ignored for my voiceover and the background track plays full volume. I've had to resort to dropping the background volume which is not what I want for the initial part of my clip.
Looks like I found the reason just after posting this. In someone's wisdom, the ducking is ignored if the voiceover clip starts too close to the overall clip start. By moving it later, it somehow realized that ducking is required.
Ducking should cause all other audio tracks (including background tracks) to fade to the percent listed.
This is a bug with iMovie 7.1.4 at least. (Still, it's a bug. If you want to start ducking early, that would make more sense than no ducking at all)

  • New iMovie Audio Ducking

After upgrading to the newest iMovie (version 10.0), I've found what seems to be dramatically less control over "audio ducking." Where in previous versions I could set a clip to duck all others to a broad range of mixes, this newest version of iMovie seems to limit that control.
Even by boosting a clip's level to 400% and setting the ducking level to it's lowest setting (strange that there's only a slider and no longer a percentage shown), my audio mix is still unacceptable. In other words, my background music still gets in the way of the audio of my primary clip.
I'd like to use this new version of iMovie but find that I must use iMovie '11 (version 9.0.9) in order to have more flexibility with ducking.
Is there a setting or solution that I'm missing? Or is there a fix? Thanks in advance.

I think I found it in the iMovie help.
    Adjust audio
iMovie has a number of tools you can use to automatically enhance the audio in your movie. You can boost the volume level of quiet audio in a clip, apply an equalizer preset, reduce background noise, and lower the volume of other audio playing along with a clip.
    Show
    Automatically enhance audio
    Hide
Lower the volume of other clips that play at the same time
When you have background sound or other clips with audio playing at the same time as a clip you want to hear in the foreground, you can automatically lower the volume of the other clips so that they don’t compete with the clip you want to hear.
For example, if you record a section of voiceover audio, you can have iMovie lower the volume of background music and other clips while the voiceover clip plays.
In the timeline, select the clip whose audio you want to hear in the foreground.
Click the Adjust button in the toolbar. The adjustments bar appears above the viewer.
To show the volume controls, click the Volume button.
Select the “Lower volume of other clips” checkbox. The volume of the clips that aren’t selected is lowered.
Drag the slider to set the volume of other clips relative to the volume of the selected clip.

No, that shouldn't happen. Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the apple appears?

  • Audio Ducking in Keynote

I have a looping slide show with a soundtrack built in. However, on one slide in the loop there is a video that I want the audio to come through, but the soundtrack plays on top of it. Is there a way to keep the sound tracking but do some audio ducking on just that slide during the video?

The only way to do this is to do away with the recorded narration soundtrack and have separate sound files in each slide.

  • Audio ducking : is there a way to hide the original footage's sound? Its grey-ed out.

My original footage's audio needs to be removed. I would love to just take it out but if I need to cover it up with ducking thats ok too. How do I hide the original footage's sound? I turned each clip to 0% but its not working.

    Tim,
You might try including the IFERROR function in your expression. This will suppress the error message.

  • Automatic Audio "Ducking"?

    Hi everyone,
I just recently purchased an HP Pavilion dv6-7010us laptop for school and I'm having an issue with audio playback.
Any time I listen via my earbuds, the audio seems to automatically "duck" or "sound check" itself.  For example, a song I just listened to features a lot of dynamic range.  But, during the quiet parts of the song, the volume seems to automatically adjust itself in order to keep everything within an average range (quiet parts become WAY louder; loud bursts of sound are capped to a mid-level).  This seems to happen no matter what program I use to play music on, so I'm assuming it is a system setting.  This is a "Beats Audio" driven laptop, so I'm wondering if maybe this has something to do with it.
Either way, as a huge music enthusiast, this is extremely annoying to me.  Can anyone help me by telling me how to turn this OFF?  Thanks very much in advance.

    Hi Alex,
Although not shown on your notebooks download page, there is a recent driver update that has corrected this issue in some cases, so try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp57501-58000/sp57966.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load.  Open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, restart the notebook again.
Has this made any difference to the issue?

  • Audio ducking working in aperture preview but not in exported video

I'm using a mix of stills and video and the soundtrack level ducks during the videos when in aperture, but when i export the movie, both the video clip and soundtrack audio are at 100%
I've tried exporting to a few of the different presets and it makes no difference.
    Anyone have any ideas?
I'm on aperture 3.1.2  on 2x2.8 quad core mac pro

I think this is just a glitch - I duplicated the project and when I click on the video clips in the duplicate the ducking control slider had re-appeared, and the sound was as expected on export.

  • Audio Ducking "Clic Box" cannot be activated

I have this project that I want to modify so that the background music audio is not so loud when people are talking in the video. The Ducking Box in the Audio Inspector cannot however be activated. Clicking on it does nothing. It remains dark and no checkmarks can be added.
    Can that be resolved?

Actually, I tried it again and the second time it worked as expected.
I don't know the correct terminology here, but the first time when I couldn't duck, the audio was shown in the timeline ABOVE the video clip. But now, where ducking is working, the audio is shown BELOW the clip.
Hope that helps anybody else who gets stuck.

  • Audio Ducking

I have a commentary where I want the video's audio to be at normal volume, but want it to lower when i start to talk, and then rise back to normal when I stop talking. How can I accomplish this in PPro CS5?

Well, there is a way to apply "automation," with the Audio Mixer. One one hand (no pun intended), you will need to ride the pot (slider) on the Audio Mixer, during playback with the Send set to Write, or Touch. That will automatically apply Track Keyframes. You might want to adjust the frequency of these in Edit>Preferences first. Personally, I find the default frequency to be a bit too often. Then, after these are set, you can observe the slider(s) working, per those Keyframes. Remember, those are Track Keyframes, so read that part of the article, so that you fully understand the differences between those, and the Clip Keyframes. They each can do the same thing - attenuate the Volume, but there ARE differences.
That is the only "automation" and it requires manual input. Note: besides Volume, you can Pan your Audio, and if in 5.1, can dynamically locate the source around the stage.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Audio Ducking issues

For some reason when I select the ducking option for the voiceover on my project - it decreases the sound on the background music as well as the voiceover. It was working yesterday and now it is driving me crazy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I know that it is supposed decrease the sound. The trouble is that for some reason it is also decreasing the sound of the track I want to be louder. I have done nothing to the music track, only selected ducking on the voiceover. It reduces the sound of the music AND the sound of the voice over. I am unsure if this is just a glitch on this lovely Labor Day.

  • Is there a fix for metro apps audio ducking while in a Skype call

Hello, I have been looking all over the internet for a fix for this but so far it doesn't seems like there is a way to fix this.
I'm trying to use Metro apps while in a Skype call but if I click out of the app the volume lowers to about 20% of what it was at before.
"When Windows detects communicates activity" is set to "Do nothing" but it does not control the Metro part of windows 8.1.
Is there some type of hack that be used to stop Metro apps from lower the volume when in a Skype call, Teamspeak or Mumble. As a gamer this makes the Metro part of Windows completely useless.

    Hi,
I made a test in my testing enviroment, when using Skype(Store APP) for phone call, system background volume would reduce, while after I'm back to desktop, it would return to former volume.
For your situation, this problem can be caused by Sound Card driver problem, you can try to reinstall Sound Card driver for test.
If no use, please also try to reinstall Skype for test.
